SCHOOL NEWS Exploring the WW2 Air Raid Shelter below RMS Grounds Manager, Mr Lees and his team work tirelessly for the benefit of the School, staff and most importantly for the students. A chance discussion last summer resulted in literally bucket loads of dirt being removed from the entrance of the Air Raid Shelter in order to once again open it up so the RMS community so they could see what students and staff from 80 years ago experienced during World War Two. So far nearly 100 visitors have been able to explore the dark corridors, learning about when and how it was constructed, seeing for themselves the environment staff and students stayed in during an Air Raid and finding graffiti from all those years ago. You can see more photos here Mrs Eccles

RMS SPORTS NEWS Tennis District Tennis RMS V St Clement Danes Despite some excellent play and good serving (and having had to wait for the Clement Danes team to arrive!), the girls lost this match. District Tennis RMS V Rickmansworth The girls played in dry but very windy conditions which caused a few issues for serving and returning the ball back. All players played well and tried hard, displaying a great team effort but unfortunately lost by 3 sets to 1. Team Tennis RMS V Watford This was the second Team Tennis fixture with a slightly altered team sheet. The girls played their individual matches first with two wins and two losses. They then played two doubles matches with one win and one loss, meaning the final result had to be decided by a tie break on points. In the shoot out, the RMS girls won! Year 9 RMS Team Tennis have now won both of their matches. Well done to all the players! Miss Watts
Amelia receives call up for the British Gymnastics Squad Last year, Amelia was asked to attend regular British Gymnastics TeamGym zonal clinics throughout to be coached by the top TeamGym coaches in the country along with other selected gymnasts. At the end of this process they were tested on the skills they had achieved and if they reached a certain standard they could enter a selection event to compete for a place in the GB squad. We are thrilled to announce that Amelia has now been chosen for the squad, and will have dedicated training sessions with the GB squad taking place all around the country until she leaves for the European Championships which take place in Lisbon in October this year. Amelia also recently competed in the Combined Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Track and Field Championships. In the U17 category she picked up a gold in the Long jump and Triple jump competitions to become County Champion in those two events, as well as being runner up in the 100metres - congratulations Amelia!

RMS SPORT Athletics Mid Season Update Track & Field Cup; Friday 18th May A nationwide event that requires each athlete to compete in a track and a field event, and with teams limited to just 12 athletes per age group, this competition is all about points (based on individual performance). The U16 team, consisting of Jane W, Ella P, Amelia D, Miranda C, Betsy G, Lexie W, Isabella F, Holly T, Lottie J, Mia I, Freya W and Emily R produced a number of season and personal bests between them to win the match with a very impressive 392 points. Emily (Discus), Jane (1500m), and Ella (1500m) scored over 20 points in their main event, and outstanding performances came from Freya W in the 300m and Shot Put and Amelia in the Triple Jump and 100m; these two girls scored 120 of the teams’ total points! Following this success, the girls have qualified to compete at the Regional Final in Chelmsford in June. There are only 10 schools in the country who have scored more points than us!

SUMMER HOLIDAY ACTIVITY BLAG Youth Theatre Summer School As we head towards the Summer I am sure some parents will be keen to find a fun and creative activity for their children. At Blag we offer a full two week performing arts program that culminates in a production at the Elgiva Theatre. Over the last 20 years we have had lots of RMS girls including my own daughter (an ex-RMS pupil) take part and experience what it's like to be part of a musical production. This year we will be fusing together two story lines, 'School of Rock and Fame' the show will be tailor written and offer great parts for all. If you are looking for more than just a musical theatre skills workshop and would like to find out what a Blag Project entails please email me at lynn@dramaclasses.biz and I will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. We take children from 7 years to 17 years and we start on July 23rd. We have been producing children's summer schools for 20 years and were one of the first in Rickmansworth. Being part of our summer school teaches a lot more than just performing arts, it teaches confidence, team spirit, quick thinking, social skills and enhances short term memory. We would love to hear from you so please feel free to get in touch. 01923 772320 or 07730 572714 Testimonial from RMS parents.... “I highly recommend Blag summer project. It’s been the highlight of all my girls’ summer hols for the last 10 years. Recommend it if they are interested in dance singing or drama or would just like to make a really nice bunch of friends and have a great laugh in the hols”. Abbey “Blag is a unique experience; it’s huge fun and a really encouraging environment where the kids learn what they’re capable of and how to push themselves to achieve more. Although they never feel pressured or regimented, the kids respect Ricky and Lynn’s skills and deep experience and respond by pulling together to put on an amazing show or performance. Blag’s far more than a Saturday class - it soon becomes a key part of their life, along with the lifelong friends from all different backgrounds and talents that they make there” Diane
