SCHOOL NEWS RMS to host TEDx Event in December We are delighted to announce that RMS will be hosting a TEDx event at School on Sunday 11th December from 1.00-4.00pm

Background TED is a non-profit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK, and this November, the TEDIndia Conference will be held in Mysore, India. TEDx Youth@RMS The RMS TEDx’s theme is RESILIENCE and we have already confirmed a number of outstanding speakers who will attend the event, including Dr Manrutt Wonkaew (art director, stylist and choreographer), Liz Atkin (visual artist), Tom Fox (experimental instrument maker), Lee Cox (London cabbie and aspiring teacher), Peter Jukes (news curator and podcaster) and former TV Presenter Gail Porter (now a motivational speaker). For more information, visit bit.ly/tedxrmsinfo (this website will be constantly updated as other speakers confirm) Tickets for the event are entirely FREE and will be available to students, members of their families, staff members and the general public. We want to encourage whole families attending and so the ticketing facility will allow Group Booking. We are releasing tickets gradually in batches and full information about the schedule can be found here bit.ly/tedxrmstickets— the first batch will be available after 7.00pm on Saturday 22nd October.

SCHOOL NEWS Sixth Form Physicists Attend Professor Brian Cox Lecture The A Level physicists at RMS had an exciting Friday night on the 4th November, when Professor Brian Cox came to Watford as part of his tour. Having watched his Stargazing Live series and lectures on certain topics in Physics, it was an incredible experience to see and hear, live, such an inspirational figure. Professor Cox specialises in Astronomy and Cosmology, and throughout the evening many topics I had touched upon in GCSE Astronomy were explained and expanded upon, such as the periodic graphs produced by binary stars and the concept of red shift. Many theories from great heroes such as Hubble and Einstein were mentioned and it is quite astonishing how these scientists predicted such theories without the aid of the technology we have today. One of the most potent things explained during the evening was the physical insignificance of Earth, let alone the almost negligible physical significance of the humans inhabiting the planet when compared to the vast expanse of the universe. However, something quite extraordinary about the complex beings that we are is how we have developed such advanced life on this one planet, compared to the contrasting environments of the other planets in our solar system. The astonishing images taken by NASA’s satellites reinforced this, and we got the chance to witness some of the most recent photographs taken of celestial bodies many light years away. To listen to somebody talk so passionately about their discipline was truly inspirational and motivated me to really persevere with my studies, so that I can achieve my place at university and have the opportunity to be taught by such enthusiastic academics. CHARITY NEWS This week has been another busy and productive week for the Charity… Cake Sale: On Tuesday, our Sixth Form Committee held a cake sale during break time, for Years 7 to 11. Many of our Committee members baked their own cupcakes, crispy bites, flapjacks and brownies galore! By the look of the empty table at the end, it would appear that the cake sale was was very popular! We are pleased to say that we managed to raise a great total of £231.85! Pizza raffle winner! For the last few weeks, we have been selling pizza raffle tickets. This have offered people the chance to win a delicious pizza lunch, for the winner to share with her form. This has proven extremely popular and we have been really impressed with the amount of interest that it has received, with some forms feeling particularly competitive which was nice to see! In Great Hall Assembly today, Mrs Rose had the honour of pulling a name out of a hat and the winner was… Annabelle in Year 7! Congratulations and we will get in touch with your form tutor next week, so that we can organise when and where to hold your pizza lunch! Christmas Fair Stall: We are going to be running our very own stall at the Christmas Fair, to raise money for Sparks. Please come along and support us. We will be in the dining room, with an array of exciting activities and items on offer. There will be a lucky dip, cookie decorating, personalised baubles, 'pin the nose on Rudolph the reindeer', face painting, glitter tattoos, a hair salon, a photo booth and lots more, as well as our usual Sparks merchandise, including badges, lanyards, pens and our new addition - Sparks Christmas cards! If this 'sparks' your interest, then come along and help us spread the Christmas cheer. We ho ho hope to see you lots of you there! Merry Christmas! Advent service donations: We will be collecting money in our buckets at the Advent Service this Sunday. We would really appreciate any donations that can be made. Thank you for your generosity and we look forward to seeing many of you there, for what promises to be both a wonderful service and start to the Christmas season! Katie and Hannah
