Strings Masterclass with Hazel Ross On the 26th January, we had the pleasure to play with and be taught by Hazel Ross. Ms Ross is a renowned violinist and has played with the likes of Shirley Bassey, Michael Bublé and Katherine Jenkins, so her expertise was greatly welcomed by the RMS string players. The class consisted of five musicians; three violins, one viola and one cello. We all played, (albeit a little nervously) through our piece to the audience, which was followed by an in-depth session with Ms Ross where she taught us the technique behind the piece, emphasising on the emotion and expressiveness. For me, Ms Ross helped me to understand that technique was there in order to help us achieve a well rounded, emotive performance. More importantly, she taught me that I need to have more belief in my own skills, an important lesson for every RMS girls. Overall, the evening was a huge success, with parents and teachers learning more about string instruments and girls achieving a higher standard of musical performances. Layla, Year 12

SCHOOL NEWS Boarders Trip to the Harry Potter Studios at Leavesden A little bit of magic goes a long way, as the boarders found last weekend when they visited the Making of Harry Potter studios. 'Birthday girl' Lirit got to help open the doors of the Great Hall for the start of the tour which was a very special moment and everyone began their spellbinding tour. From riding on a broom, seeing the magnificent model of 'Hogwarts in the snow' and the tiny details such as the toffee wrappers littering the floor in the carriages of the Hogwarts express, everyone was captivated by the sights and smells. Sophia was slightly less enamoured by her first taste of “Butter-beer but agreed that she had thoroughly enjoyed her visit as did we all! Spellbinding! You can see a collection of photos from the trip here http://bit.ly/RMSHarryPotter17

Equestrian Success for Abigail Congratulations to Abigail W who represented the RMS Equestrian Team on Saturday 21 January at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre in the Cedars Upper School Competition. This is a team and individual show jumping competition for schools in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. Abigail jumped a clear round 90cm with her new horse Falcons Fusilier. Abigail had only jumped her new horse five times before competing so this is a great achievement. This is another great result for the RMS equestrian team and we look forward to further success in the year to come. Sophie, RMS Equestrian Team Captain
