SCHOOL NEWS Mindful Self-compassion Course I am offering a Mindful Self-compassion (MSC) course for parents (and possibly some staff depending on numbers) in Trinity Term. If you'd like the chance to take some time to take a fresh look at your life and learn some practices that will help you take care of yourself in a consciously kind way, and as a result look after those around you (including your children) in the same way, then I invite you to join me on this journey. Below is some information about MSC: Mindful Self-compassion (MSC) brings together three strands 

A mindful approach to life, really noticing what’s going on, paying attention, learning to be aware of early indicators of stress or difficulty

An acknowledgement that life for everyone involves a degree of difficulty, suffering, struggle and that this is our common humanity; my struggle is different to yours, but we all have difficulties and are not alone even when it feels like it

The introduction of deep compassion for ourselves and for others, in a way that, instead of being judgemental, is kind and open-hearted; this starts with learning to be kind to ourselves in the same way we are naturally kind to our family and friends.

This might sound straightforward, but it takes time and practice to really let it work properly; we are “hot-wired” for survival, most of us have an “inner-critic” and MSC has to overturn a lot of assumptions and practices. This is why the course is intensive, with some challenging material, and some wonderful practices to do together and to take away to use every day. The course is eight sessions of two and three quarter hours each plus a day retreat - so it's a big commitment, but worth it as I can testify from doing it, and as people on the same course I helped to teach before Christmas will tell you. There will be a fee in the region of £150 including teaching, course materials, and meditation practices; some of that will come to me and some to the school for accommodation and materials. If you are interested could you please let me know, and when I have an idea about numbers we'll try to find a time that suits most people; this is likely to be one evening each week (maybe 6.30/7.00 to 9.15/9.45) or one afternoon each week if there's enough interest. Finally let me say that you don't have to have studied Mindfulness to learn about MSC - the Mindfulness that you need to know is included in the course. But if you've done some Mindfulness then you'll find that MSC builds on what you've done in a very valuable way. Please let me know if you're interested; I'm also happy to answer any queries you may have. Rev'd John Quill, School Chaplain jquill@royalmasonic.herts.sch.uk

SCHOOL NEWS HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR VISITING FRENCH STUDENTS I am a former pupil of The Royal Masonic School for Girls and now live in Lyon with my French husband and bilingual children. After studying modern languages at Durham University, I began teaching English as a foreign language here in France. Your daughter has possibly already mentioned the “French girls” who come to Rickmansworth at the end of the summer term. From 2005 to 2012, I accompanied a small group of girls to RMS, including my own daughters, Arabella and Sophie. I was constantly delighted by the warm welcome the girls received from both boarders and day pupils at RMS. Since 2013, the French girls have been accommodated by families of day pupils and, as a result of our visits, I have set up a number of successful French exchanges for RMS sixth formers. I firmly believe that this is the best way for teenagers to improve their language skills. This year I would like to bring eight 12 to 16 year old children to Rickmansworth at the end of June. I am currently looking for families that would enjoy hosting a French boy or girl from Saturday 23rd June to Tuesday 3rd July. On schooldays the children will take part in a variety of group activities including outings to Central London. They will join their host families in the evenings and at the weekend. Each host family will receive £250 to cover their expenses during our visit. If your family would be interested in hosting this year, please contact me by email as soon as possible (lisa-marie@neuf.fr). I look forward to hearing from you. Lisa-Marie Bouzigues (née Park)

PERFORMING ARTS I am delighted to tell you about a range of music, dance and drama that the Faculty of Performing Arts will be presenting this half-term. Due to the dates given to us by the A Level, ABRSM and London College examination boards, we have had to make some changes to the dates published in our printed programme. To that end, the showcase scheduled for 26th February will now take place later this term with the date to be confirmed. Our Rush Hour concert on the 9th March will now feature a range of performances of girls preparing for their ABRSM examinations. Our Year 13 students will be performing pieces from their A Level recitals at the Spring Concert, on 27th March. All of these events are free to attend with no ticket required. “Royalty, a dance show featuring work set to Rick Wakeman's "Six Wives of Henry VIII" followed by Ella Fitzgerald songs accompanied by Choro and Big Band, takes place on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th March. Tickets are available here: https://www.trybooking.co.uk/DWW I look forward to seeing you at our events this half-term. Daniel Hyde, Director of Performing Arts

SPORTS RESULTS Hockey RMS vs Watford Girls Grammar Senior Team won 3-1 Well done to the senior hockey team who despite the cold weather played some excellent hockey The girls attacked the goal with confidence and teamwork. Well done girls!

Gymnastics On Tuesday the Under 14 and Under 19 gymnastics teams took part in the Eastern Region floor and vault competition. The girls showed excellent team work and encouraged each other throughout the competition. Both teams performed brilliantly with each team coming second. Well done to all the girls.

Badminton RMS travelled to St Helens School on Tuesday for a Year 10 Badminton league match. They unfortunately lost 7-2 but the score most certainly did not reflect the games played. There were some very tightly fought points and the girls should be proud of themselves for the perseverance and determination they displayed throughout the match.
