SCHOOL NEWS History Trip to the Battlefields Over the long weekend, a group of Year 9 students travelled to the World War One battlefields of Northern France and Belgium. Benefitting from some beautiful weather, they visited:
the village of La Boiselle (scene of a British operation during the Battle of Albert, the name given by the British to the first two weeks of the Battle of the Somme)
the Thiepval Memorial (which commemorates more than 72,000 men of British and South African forces who died in the Somme before 20th March 1918 and who have no known grave)
the Ulster Tower, Northern Ireland’s national war memorial
Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, where the girls and staff laid poppies in a moving service to the Old Masonic Boys who were killed in service during the First World War
Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown.

SCHOOL NEWS French Trip to the Opal Coast During the Easter holidays, a group of Year 7 students went on a short trip to the Opal Coast of Normandy. Leaving RM early in the morning, the first day involved a scavenger hunt around the hypermarket at Cite de l’Europe and a hands-on French bakery experience.
Day 2 brought a French lesson, a trip to a bee farm, and some free time in the lovely town of Le Touquet—where obviously shopping and ice cream were the activities of choice! Day 3 was probably the highlight of the trip—a visit to the Chocolaterie de Beussent! Here the girls watched chocolate being made, then, given the timing of their stay, how the chocolate is then formed into Easter bunnies. The shop was of course popular with everyone… Continuing on the theme, the afternoon saw a visit to Boulogne and a cookie factory, where again the girls had
a
chance to watch the production process, and taste the samples! The final excursion was to the Nausicaa Sea Life Centre, before, you guessed correctly, a bit more shopping! Thank you to Mrs Roberts for organising the trip, and to all the staff who accompanied the girls!

SCHOOL NEWS Issie (Year 7) Crowned National Fencing Champion Congratulations to Issie Johnson in Year 7 who last weekend was crowned British Under 12 Fencing (Foil) Champion. Issie took part in the British Youth Championships held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on 6th May. Representing the Eastern Region and her fencing club, Fencers Club London, she emerged top of her age category after fencing with great focus and composure all day. Her triumph means she is both British AND English Champion having won the English title last summer. Congratulations Issie on this fantastic achievement; everyone at RMS is very proud of you!
Community Arts Tea Party On Tuesday, the Community Arts Choir held their annual tea party for guests from local residential homes and societies. The audience sang along to some of the songs from the show “A Night at the Oscars” and were very pleased with the lovely tea that the catering department kindly provided. If you would like to see the show for yourselves, come along to the Rickmansworth Canal Festival on May 19th—the Community Arts Choir will be performing at 12.20pm.

SUMMER HOLIDAY ACTIVITY BLAG Youth Theatre Summer School As we head towards the Summer I am sure some parents will be keen to find a fun and creative activity for their children. At Blag we offer a full two week performing arts program that culminates in a production at the Elgiva Theatre. Over the last 20 years we have had lots of RMS girls including my own daughter (an ex-RMS pupil) take part and experience what it's like to be part of a musical production. This year we will be fusing together two story lines, 'School of Rock and Fame' the show will be tailor written and offer great parts for all. If you are looking for more than just a musical theatre skills workshop and would like to find out what a Blag Project entails please email me at lynn@dramaclasses.biz and I will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. We take children from 7 years to 17 years and we start on July 23rd. We have been producing children's summer schools for 20 years and were one of the first in Rickmansworth. Being part of our summer school teaches a lot more than just performing arts, it teaches confidence, team spirit, quick thinking, social skills and enhances short term memory. We would love to hear from you so please feel free to get in touch. 01923 772320 or 07730 572714 Testimonial from RMS parents.... “I highly recommend Blag summer project. It’s been the highlight of all my girls’ summer hols for the last 10 years. Recommend it if they are interested in dance singing or drama or would just like to make a really nice bunch of friends and have a great laugh in the hols”. Abbey “Blag is a unique experience; it’s huge fun and a really encouraging environment where the kids learn what they’re capable of and how to push themselves to achieve more. Although they never feel pressured or regimented, the kids respect Ricky and Lynn’s skills and deep experience and respond by pulling together to put on an amazing show or performance. Blag’s far more than a Saturday class - it soon becomes a key part of their life, along with the lifelong friends from all different backgrounds and talents that they make there” Diane
