SCHOOL NEWS International Women’s Day Celebrations at RMS Athough RMS has celebrated International Women’s Day for 5 years already, this year truly felt like the era for progress. Perhaps it was the commencement of 100 years since women were first granted the vote in the UK; the millions of people coming together at the Women’s march last year and this year; or movements like Times Up and Me Too, giving those that were silenced a voice. Seeing exceptional and empowering women in the news has certainly made a difference, this was the atmosphere I felt during Great Hall assembly for Year 5-13 last Friday, which celebrated International Women's Day (which was on Thursday 8th March). This empowering assembly was led by seniors in the boarding community and members of the National Council of Young Women. A key point made was that some things aren’t changing fast enough. Although we have come a long way since Emmeline Pankhurst fought for the vote, internationally women are still at a disadvantage to men. Pay parity is at a record low, but it’s still at 18.1%; 9% of CEO positions worldwide are held by women (and even less by women of colour), 15 million girls under 18 are forced into marriage every year. It is hard to digest these numbers, but it is so much worse for the women that live through them. Although it is important to celebrate the achievements of women, we also need to raise awareness for what still needs to be done. I hope the assembly inspired girls to challenge stereotypes and bias, and support the campaign for change. My time at RMS has provided me the space for self improvement; confidence and courage to highlight these issues and stand up for progress. Sonu Year 13 RMS Senior School students have been invited to enter the National Council of Young Women’s competition to design a protest sign which fits the theme “Women’s Rights”. Closing date is 26th March. Students should email their entry to Mrs Bloomfield-Proud (rbloomfieldproud@royalmasonic.herts.sch.uk)

PERFORMING ARTS Forthcoming Performing Arts Events On Monday 19th March, instead of our advertised Brass Masterclass, we are presenting a free showcase of work undertaken by our Speech and Drama students who have had considerable success at the Watford Festival. This will be followed by a variety of Musical Theatre performances by girls preparing for their London College of Music examinations the following week. It starts at 7.00pm in the Space and no ticket is required. I would also like to remind you that the Spring Concert, the final major Performing Arts event of the academic year takes place on Tuesday 27th March at 7.00pm in the Great Hall Mr Hyde Director of Performing Arts

SPORTS RESULTS Hockey U14 Hockey County Cup The Under 14 team had a very intense semi-final against Dame Alice Owens, and all of the team put 100% effort to defending the goal and passing the ball forwards. RMS scored the first goal in the first half to put us in the lead. During the second half, RMS had multiple chances but sadly couldn't get the ball on target. With 4 minutes left to go, Dame Alice Owens scored to equalize. This meant RMS had to defend hard but unfortunately, with a gap in the defence, the opposing team scored to make the final score 2-1. Well done to the girls on such a hard working team and a great performance.

Netball Under 13 A + B Netball v Godstowe Very windy game and last match of the season for both teams. Each team worked very hard and used all their skills learnt throughout the season to work together as a team and communicate to send the ball down the court. Unfortunately both teams lost but worked hard throughout. Great season girls and lots of improvement made by everyone. Year 9 vs Haberdasher's The 9 A Team played in their final County League netball match against Haberdashers. RMS worked incredibly hard to cut off attacking plays by Habs and our attackers successfully outwitted their opponents. The final score was 19-15 to RMS and the MVP was Betsy G.

The Year 9 B Team faced Haberdashers in a friendly match this week. The teams were very evenly matched but RMS finished the first half of the match with a narrow lead. In the second half RMS continued to defend well and won the game 17-12. The MVP was Heidi T.

The girls performed very well on both the floor and the vault and were crowned District Champions for the level 2 competition. Hayleigh T also came first individually. Well done to all the girls

ISGA Competition Last Friday the Under 15 gymnastics team took part in the Independent Schools Gymnastics Association competition. They performed incredibly well on all five pieces and came 1st overall and 2nd for their group routine. Individually, Miranda C came 1st, Amelia D came 5th and Talia A came 8th.

On Sunday both the Under 13 and Over 13 gymnastics teams competed in the ISGA competition. Again both teams performed very well on all pieces. The Under 13 team came 9th overall and 6th for their group. The Over 13 team came 5th overall and 8th for their group. Well done to all the girls.

FORMS NEWS Thank you all who supported us on Saturday night and took part in our Annual Quiz! Everyone who attended seem to have a great time. The winning team, the Cream Egg Heads, had been well ahead throughout and left other teams well behind by the end of the quiz with top score of 127. SLT team have languished closer to the bottom with 103 but it didn't dampen their spirits and our first timers Reception team have finished very respectable 9th. Mr Connors was magnificent in the role of Quizmaster and we are very thankful to Damian Paul for being Mr Connors’ glamorous assistant and looking after the leader board! Our wonderful FORMS members as always looked after the bar and great food was served by outstanding catering team. All in all it was a great success so thank you all for supporting FORMS again.
