RMS Sixth Form Bulletin Edition 26: 2nd December 2016

Message from Mrs Freeman The Christmas tree is up in the common room, young enterprise girls are carting boxes around ready for the Christmas fair and the garth is covered in a lovely white frost. Winter is here and the holidays are coming! Earlier today the Sixth Form had the pleasure of hearing from Mrs Rose about her RMS bubble and what her plans are for when she leaves. Serena presented her with a Veteran's badge to recognise her long service at the School. During assembly there were no less than 12 Stars of the Fortnight, highlighting once again how great the girls are at stepping up when needed. On this note I would like to congratulate the Senior Hockey Team who not only beat their great rivals but also won the District tournament. A great achievement for a great team! On that note I tweeted about this earlier today and would like to encourage you to follow the goings on in Hind House by following @RMSsixthform - there is a lovely picture of the girls wearing their Christmas jumpers this morning. Have a good weekend everyone

If this is you/your daughter please encourage her to get it finalised this weekend! Mrs Freeman

CHARITY NEWS This week: Advent Service: Last Sunday evening, Reverend Quill led a wonderful Advent Service in the Chapel, to mark the beginning of the Christmas season. Members of our Sixth Form Charities Committee volunteered to stand with our Sparks buckets and we were really grateful and impressed with people’s generosity. We managed to raise a staggering £420! This is a really pleasing total and it takes us one step closer to our £10k goal, so thank you very, very much!

Sparks Christmas Stall – Saturday 3rd December, Dining Hall, 11.00am—4.00pm Please come and support us at the Christmas Fair, this Saturday. We will be in the Dining Room, with an array of activities and items on offer. Our Christmas elves will be there running our lucky dip, cookie decorating, personalised baubles, 'pin the nose on Rudolph the reindeer', face painting, tattoos, a hair salon, lavender bags as well as our usual Sparks merchandise, including badges, lanyards, pens and our new addition - Sparks Christmas cards! If these items 'spark' your interest, then come along and help us spread the Christmas cheer. We ho ho hope to see you there! Merry Christmas!

Next week: Candy canes and Sparks Christmas cards! We will be selling candy canes and our signature Sparks Christmas cards at centre doors every day next week. Buy a candy cane for a friend and write a little note on one of our labels, which we will attach with ribbon and deliver in our Santa sack near the end of term! Christmas cards can also be either bought to take away or delivered to a friend in school, just come and write the card and we will put a chocolate coin insider, ready for delivery! Non- uniform day! - Thursday 8th December: The theme will be Christmas knitwear, so whip out your favourite Christmas jumper and wrap up warm! To avoid being on Santa’s naughty list, please remember your £1 and refrain from wearing logos, shorts or showing bare midriffs (it will probably be too cold for this anyway!). Our Charities Committee elves will be collecting the £1s in their forms and Year groups. Of course, larger donations are also always welcome and greatly appreciated!

Christmas Concert! – Friday 9th December: This is the perfect opportunity to get into the Christmas spirit. Come along to enjoy an evening of wonderful Christmas music, which will be performed by an array of talented RMS musicians and singers. We will be there too, fundraising at the door, and would really appreciate any donations, no matter how big or small. So come along to help spread the Christmas cheer! Katie and Hannah

“Medic Mentors” Summer School 2017 The below could be beneficial to Year 12 students who are intending to apply to Medical School... Registration has opened for “Medic Mentor's Summer School 2017”. This is a unique opportunity for students to spend an entire week with doctors and medical students perfecting their UCAS applications to medical school. It is a 5-day residential programme at Nottingham University and will cover the following areas comprehensively: 1. UCAS and all medical-wider reading 2. Two days of 1-2-1 personal statement tutoring (with an experienced doctor or med student) to help students finish a final draft of their statements. 3. UKCAT and BMAT teaching 4. Interview theory and mock MMI and panel interviews 5. Personal consultations with a doctor or med student to help strategically select their top 4 UCAS choices and a viable 5th choice (parents can also attend this session) The Summer School also includes eight books and access to two excellent UCKAT and BMAT online questions banks. There are only 20 students per school and three possible dates that students can choose from in the Summer. As such, it is the most comprehensive Summer School programme around! The Summer School can also be used to count towards the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. See the next page for more information, or you can also find more details about the Summer School (including reviews and the prospectus) at this link: http://medicmentor.co.uk/about/events/summer-school/ Students who register before January 2017 can save £200 on the registration, and due to the limited spaces we advise interested students to apply early. If you have any questions, please contact Dr Dhakshana Siva, Lead Mentor, on 07454704204 or email applications@medicmentor.org
