Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team continues a five-game road trip and opens the 2012 calendar year Monday night with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Ohio at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio. The Colonials are coming off a 64-47 setback @ Memphis (12/29/11), which snapped a three-game winning streak. RMU established season lows in both points (47) and field goal percentage (23.2 percent) as freshman forward Lucky Jones was the only Colonial to reach double figures in scoring, leading Robert Morris with 10 points. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones finished with just seven points against the Tigers, snapping a streak of 19 consecutive double-figure scoring games dating back to the 2010-11 campaign. RMU returns to Northeast Conference action to close out its five-game road swing after taking on the Bobcats, visiting Smithfield, R.I., for a 7:00 p.m. tip against Bryant Thursday, Jan. 5, before a 3:30 p.m. tilt against Central Connecticut State Saturday, Jan. 7, at Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, Conn.

Quick Stat of the Night - Despite having his streak of 19 straight games scoring in double figures snapped by finishing with seven points @ Memphis (12/29/11), a key reason redshirt junior guard Velton Jones was able to put together that streak is his ability to get to the free-throw line. Jones finished 3-for-4 at the stripe against the Tigers and on the 2011-12 campaign is 73-for-100 (73 percent) at the chalk. Jones, who is averaging 7.1 visits to the free-throw line and 5.2 free throws made per game so far this season, is on pace to establish a new Robert Morris single-season record for free throws. The record of 151 is held by former Colonial Gabe Jackson (1992-95), who established the mark as a senior in 1994-95. Based on his current averages, Jones is on pace to finish with 161 free throws in 2011-12, and he enters Monday’s game @ Ohio ranked 14th all-time at RMU in career free throws made with 263.
