Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team returns to action after a 13-day break and opens the Northeast Conference portion of its 2012-13 schedule Thursday by welcoming Bryant to the Charles L. Sewall Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip. RMU concluded its non-conference season by splitting a pair of road games, earning a 66-61 victory @ Louisiana-Lafayette (12/18/12) before falling @ Arkansas (12/20/12), 79-74, which snapped a season-high five-game winning streak. Against the Razorbacks, junior guard Coron Williams and Karvel Anderson paced the Colonials with 17 points each, as the duo combined to shoot 10-for-20 (50 percent) from the field, including 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from beyond the arc. Junior forward Mike McFadden and redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson each scored 10 points against Arkansas, with Johnson adding eight rebounds. The Colonials close out a two-game homestand to open NEC play after taking on Bryant Thursday by hosting Central Connecticut State Saturday, Jan. 5, in a 7:00 p.m. tip at the Sewall Center.

Quick Stat of the Night - Robert Morris opens its 32nd season of competition in the Northeast Conference Thursday against Bryant and all-time owns a record of 15-16 (.484) in league openers.

The Colonials are opening their NEC slate at home for the fifth time in the last six years and have had tremendous success against league foes at the Charles L. Sewall Center in recent years. Since the 2005-06 season, RMU has posted a 50-13 (.794) mark against NEC competition and all-time owns a record of 147-90 (.620) at the Chuck against league foes. Robert Morris also enters Thursday’s NEC opener against Bryant having finished .500 or better at home against league opposition for 14 consecutive seasons. The last time the Colonials had a losing record at home against the league was the 1997-98 campaign, when RMU finished 1-7 at home against the NEC.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 52-30 (.634).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or individual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Straight Shooter - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams is heating up at the right time for Robert Morris. As the Colonials enter Northeast Conference play Thursday against Bryant, William has averaged 15.3 points over his last four games, converting 58.3 percent (21-for36) of his shots from the field, including 64 percent (16-for-25) from beyond the arc.

Williams enters Thursday’s tilt against the Bulldogs coming off a season-high 17 points @ Arkansas (12/20/12), as he finished 6-for-7 shooting from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Thanks to his performance against the Razorbacks, Williams pushed his career total in three-pointers to 168, which ranks seventh all-time at Robert Morris.

Tag Team - While redshirt junior guard Coron Williams has heated up from beyond the arc in recent weeks, he has teamed with junior guard Karvel Anderson to give Robert Morris a lethal combination from deep. Through the first 13 games of the 2012-13 season, the duo have combined for 67 three-pointers, an average of 5.2 three-pointers per contest. Anderson enters Thursday’s Northeast Conference opener against Bryant ranked second in the Northeast Conference in three-pointers per game (2.69), while Williams ranks seventh (2.46).

The duo are on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular season with 160 three-pointers, which would place Anderson and Williams as the top three-point shooting tandem in school history. The current record of 150 is held by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10), who turned the trick in 2008-09.

Tattoo You - While RMU’s outside shooting has been key for the Colonials during their nonconference slate, the offensive exploits of junior forward Mike McFadden has also given Robert Morris a boost. Over the last six games, McFadden is supplying the Colonials with averages of 8.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 69 percent (20-for-29) from the field. McFadden enters Thursday’s game against Bryant ranked second in the Northeast Conference in field goal percentage at 60.9 percent (42-for-69). McFadden is looking to become just the fourth player in school history to shoot at least 60 percent from the field during a season as well as the first since former Colonial Steve Napper set a single-season school record by converting 66.2 percent (96-for-145) of his shots in 1997-98.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and the proof is in the numbers. Jones enters Thursday’s game against Bryant ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assists (5.31 per game) and fourth assist-to-turnover ratio (1.97).

Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 94 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (198084). He would need to average 5.2 assists per game over RMU’s final 18 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark.

Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones produced his best shooting night of the 2012-13 campaign in a 91-69 victory over Duquesne (12/15/12), hitting six of his 10 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 from long range, and going a perfect 6-for-6 at the freethrow line for a season-high 22 points. For Jones, it marked the 14th time in his career he’s eclipsed 20 points in a game, which is tied for ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones is tied with former Colonials Gabe Jackson (1991-95) and Keith Jones (1995-99). RMU’s all-time leader in career 20+ point games is all-time leading scorer Myron Walker, who turned the trick 47 times from 1990 to 1994.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Thursday’s game against Bryant having shot 76 percent (225-for-296) at the chalk in its first 13 games of 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way is redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who has converted 84 percent (63-for-75) of his attempts at the chalk, which ranks fourth in the NEC. 50 Cent - Third-year head coach Andrew Toole picked up his 50th career victory thanks to RMU’s 66-54 win @ Hampton (12/8/12). The victory came in his 79th game on the sidelines guiding the Colonials. Toole is the second fastest head coach in school history to reach 50 career wins, trailing only former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), who turned the trick in his 72nd game at Robert Morris.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. It marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game to pace the NEC, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. Leading the Colonials in 2011-12 was redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who ranked third in the NEC with an average of 1.84 thefts per game, while junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate ranked 11th (1.24 spg).

Scouting the Bulldogs - Bryant enters Thursday’s Northeast Conference opener with an overall record of 7-4 (.636) after earning an 80-79 victory @ Lehigh (12/29/12) to close out its 2012-13 non-conference slate. Against the Mountain Hawks, senior guard Frankie Dobbs converted a layup with two seconds to play to help lift the Bulldogs to the victory. Dobbs is one of three players scoring in double figures for Bryant, as he is supplying an average of 12.7 points as well as a team-high 4.2 assists per game. The leading scorer for the Bulldogs is sophomore guard Dyami Starks, who scores at a 16.9 points per game clip. Junior forward Alex Francis, meanwhile, scores 15.2 points per contest while shooting 49.6 percent (66-for-133) from the field and is grabbing a team-high 8.0 rebounds per contest.

Bryant Head Coach - In his fifth season as head coach of the Bulldogs is Tim O’Shea (Boston College ’84), who owns a career record of 147-198 (.426), including a mark of 27-103 (.208) with Bryant. O’Shea ushered in a new era for Bryant basketball in 2008-09, guiding the team into Division I competition for the first time and has his team poised for success four years later with postseason dreams now within reach. Before arriving in Smithfield, R.I., O’Shea served as the head coach at Ohio University for seven seasons.

RMU’s Last Game - Arkansas shot 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from the field in the second half and 52.5 percent (31-for-59) overall en route to a 79-74 victory over Robert Morris, Dec. 20, at Bud Walton Arena. The Colonials, who had their five-game winning streak snapped with the setback, concluded their 2012-13 non-conference slate with an overall record of 8-5, while the Razorbacks improved to 6-4. In a game that featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes, RMU held a 41-37 advantage with 18:10 to play after sophomore forward Lucky Jones hit the front end of a pair of free-throw attempts to cap a 7-2 run to open the second half for the Colonials. Junior guards Coron Williams and Karvel Anderson each connected from beyond the arc to bolster Robert Morris during the salvo. Arkansas battled back behind the play of Hunter Mickelson, who scored 14 of his career-high 16 points in the second half on perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the field and a 2-for-2 performance at the stripe. Mickelson would give the Razorbacks a 4542 edge with a tip-in off an offensive rebound, and after junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate pulled the Colonials to within 45-44 with a pair of free throws, Arkansas hung a 14-4 run on RMU to open up a 59-48 advantage with 10:23 to go. Mickelson, Mardracus Wade and BJ Young each scored four points during the balanced attack offensively for the Razorbacks. Despite the deficit, Robert Morris used a 12-1 surge to close to within 64-60 at the 7:19 mark of the second half. The Colonials did most of their damage at the chalk, as Anderson went 5-for-5, redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson hit a pair and Williams buried a three-pointer. The Razorbacks looked to take control, 69-60, after a layup from Mickelson with 4:35 left, but RMU had one last charge, closing to within 71-68 thanks to an 8-2 spurt. Williams started the run with a three-pointer, while Johnson converted a three-point play and Jones hit a pair of free throws.

However, Marshawn Powell was left wide open with 1:23 to play and slammed home a dunk to give Arkansas a 74-68 lead to help seal the victory.

The Race to 1,000 - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson reached double-figures in scoring for the first time on the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center with 14 points. Johnson reached double figures on the strength of an 11-for-12 performance at the free-throw line, establishing career highs in both categories. Johnson is now just 66 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, meanwhile, is 232 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that Robert Morris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Through the first 13 games of the season, Morgan has recorded 18 blocks, an average of 1.38 per contest that ranks third in the Northeast Conference behind Wagner’s Noafall Folahan and Mario Moody. Based on his current average, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish the regular season with 43 blocks.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (460) and free-throw attempts (635), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Thursday’s game against Bryant leading the Colonials in both free throws (63) and free-throw attempts (75), a success rate of 84 percent that ranks fourth in the Northeast Conference.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting assignments. Williams has started 55 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (200810) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a 110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones became the sixth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the NEC in steals against league foes in 2011-12. Jones averaged 2.39 thefts per contest, recording at least three steals in eight of RMU’s 16 tilts against league opponents. Jones joins former Colonials Tony Lee (2004-08) and Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) to turn the trick. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in 2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg), while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2 spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). Jones is the fourth Colonial overall to lead the NEC in steals against league foes, joining former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000).

10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his sixth double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign @ Arkansas (12/20/12), scoring a season-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a 5-for-6 performance from beyond the arc. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Thursday’s s tilt against Bryant with a record of 27-8 (.771) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the Robert Morris roster. RMU’s loss @ Arkansas snapped a streak of eight consecutive wins when Williams scored at least 10 points in a game.

In a 61-58 victory @ Campbell (12/4/12), junior guard Karvel Anderson buried a threepointer with 4.5 seconds left to help lift the Colonials to the win. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 117 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 111 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and thanks to his start @ Arkansas (12/20/12) ranks third all-time at RMU in career starts, trailing only former Colonials Andre Boyd (114) and Jeremy Chappell (120).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 66-61 win @ LouisianaLafayette (12/18/12), Robert Morris owns a record to 96-19 (.835) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 45-12 (.789) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 82 games on the sidelines over the last three seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 57 contests, an amazing 69.5 percent of the time.

Included in those 57 contests are 25 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMU owning an astounding mark of 24-1 (.960) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 5853 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 23 straight when turning the trick.

Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for Robert Morris over the last six seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Four Score and ... In a 91-69 victory over Duquesne (12/15/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 22 points. Joining Jones was redshirt junior guard Coron Williams (16), junior forward Mike McFadden (12) and sophomore forward Lucky Jones (10).

RMU has had four players reach double figures in scoring a total of 26 times in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, with the Colonials owning a record of 18-8 (.692) in those contests. Included in that stretch is a perfect 3-1 (.750) record so far on the 2012-13 campaign.

On The Offensive - Bolstered by a shooting percentage of 65.6 percent (21for-32) in the second half of a 91-69 win over Duquesne (12/15/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, RMU produced one of its best shooting nights of the 2012-13 campaign. The Colonials finished the game with a shooting percentage of 50.7 percent (34-for-67), including a mark of 46.4 percent (13for-28) from beyond the arc. RMU has now won 30 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor dating back to the 200809 season. The last loss for Robert Morris when hitting at least half its shots came in a 92-72 setback @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47).

Streaker - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones owns the longest double-figure scoring streak by a Colonial on the active roster at 19 games. Jones turned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first 13 games in 2011-12. Over that span, Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest.

The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. The longest double-figure scoring streak of the 2012-13 campaign also belongs to Jones, who reached the plateau in five straight games before finishing with just seven points @ Savannah State (11/26/12). Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still near the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2002-03 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.11 threepointers per contest, which is tied with St. Francis Brooklyn for the most in the NEC.
