2014-15 RMU Basketball
League Play Begins - Robert Morris opens the Northeast Conference portion of its 2014-15 schedule Saturday when it welcomes Mount St. Mary’s for a 4:00 p.m. tip at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials, a charter member of the Northeast Conference and playing their 34th season as a member of the league, own an all-time record of 324-244 (.570) since NEC play began in 1981. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, RMU has posted a record of 99-24 (.798) against league opponents, including a mark of 51-11 (.823) at home. Under fifth-year head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials have posted a record of 28-7 (.800) at the Sewall Center against NEC opposition in the regular season, winning at least seven games in each of his first four years at the helm. Combos - Looking for RMU’s best combination as the Colonials get ready to enter Northeast Conference Saturday against Mount St. Mary’s, head coach Andrew Toole hasn’t been afraid to shuffle his lineup. Toole employed his sixth different starting lineup in the last eight games in RMU’s final non-conference game @ Clemson (12/30/14), as senior forward Lucky Jones returned to the starting five in place of freshman guard Marcquise Reed, who came off the bench for the first time in seven games. Jones contributed 13 points against the Tigers, the eighth time in his last nine games he’s reached double figures. Toole has used seven different starting lineups through 12 games this season and in five years at the helm of the program has used a total of 40 different starting combinations. Drop The Leash - Despite coming off the bench in RMU’s final non-conference game @ Clemson (12/30/14), freshman guard Marcquise Reed continued his hot shooting, scoring a gamehigh 21 points against the Tigers. Reed enters Saturday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s averaging 17.4 points and 2.4 steals per game while shooting 58.9 percent (33-for-56) from the field over the last five games. Reed enters the tilt against the Mount ranked 10th in the Northeast Conference in scoring at 13.3 points per game while ranking third in the circuit in steals at 1.92 thefts per contest and fifth in field goal percentage (.500). Freedom - Converting at the free-throw line was a big reason Robert Morris was able to garner an 84-81 victory over Delaware (12/22/14). Late in the second half, the Colonials converted 16 consecutive free throws, tying an RMU record at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Robert Morris also knocked down 16 straight free throws in a 94-67 victory over Wagner (12/10/98). The overall record for consecutive converted attempts at the stripe at “The Chuck” is held by LIU Brooklyn. The Blackbirds hit 19 consecutive free throws in an 80-77 win over the Colonials March 2, 1993, in the first round of the 1993 NEC Tournament. Wins & Losses - Breaking down the numbers for Robert Morris in its four wins and its eight losses ... Junior guard Rodney Pryor is averaging 23.0 points in RMU’s four victories while shooting 83.8 percent (31-for-37) from the floor, including 88.9 percent (16-for-18) from beyond the arc, and 82.4 percent (14-for-17) at the free-throw line ... Sophomore guard Kavon Stewart owns 21 assists (7.0 per game) and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.00 (21-to-7) in the three RMU victories he has played in compared to 24 assists (3.0 per game) and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.26 (24-to-19) in RMU’s eight losses ... The Colonials own a rebounding margin of +6.8 (39.8 to 33.0) in their four victories but have been outrebounded by an average of 10.5 rebounds (42.0 to 31.5) in their eight setbacks. Home Cooking - Despite scoring just seven points in RMU’s final non-conference game of the year @ Clemson (12/30/14), junior guard Rodney Pryor hopes a return to the Charles L. Sewall Center will help him rediscover his stroke. In five games at “The Chuck” this season, Pryor is averaging 14.6 points per game while shooting 56.3 percent (27-for-48) from the field. In RMU’s last four home contests, Pryor has supplied the Colonials with an average of 17.0 points per game while shooting 64.1 percent (25-for-39) from the field. Pryor, who leads Robert Morris in scoring at 13.8 points per game, ranks in the top 10 in the Northeast Conference in five different categories entering Saturday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s. He leads the circuit in three-point field goal percentage (.472) while ranking third in threepoint field goals made per game (2.33), fourth in free-throw percentage (.839) and ninth in both scoring and field goal percentage (.479). Shootout - Robert Morris snapped a 13-game losing streak when allowing at least 80 points in its 84-81 victory over Delaware (12/22/14) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Overall in five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a record of 22-3 (.880) when scoring 80 or more points. However, RMU is just 3-27 (.100) when allowing its opponents to eclipse the 80-point plateau. Each of the three victories for Robert Morris when allowing at least 80 points have come in the last two seasons.

Reserve Clause - The Robert Morris bench was the spot of instant offense for the Colonials in the non-conference portion of its 2014-15 campaign. RMU enters Saturday’s Northeast Conference opener receiving an average of 28.4 points per game from the bench. The leading scorer for Robert Morris has come from the bench in seven of 12 games this season, and the reserves have outscored their opponents by a margin of +7.8. The group is shooting 43 percent (114-for-265) from the field, including 35 percent (35-for100) from beyond the arc, and 70.3 percent (78-for-111) at the free-throw line. Directing Traffic - Sophomore guard Kavon Stewart put forth arguably his best game in a Robert Morris uniform in a 75-59 victory over Duquesne (12/13/14), as he established career highs in points (12), assists (11) and rebounds (7) while tying a career high in steals (4) in registering his first collegiate double-double. Stewart is the 13th different player in program history to finish with at least 11 assists in a game and the first since former guard Velton Jones (2008-13) posted 11 dimes in an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13). Stewart enters Saturday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s ranked fourth in the Northeast Conference in assists (4.09 per game) and fifth in assistto-turnover ratio (1.73). Double Your Pleasure - In a 75-59 win over Duquesne (12/13/14), sophomore guard Kavon Stewart and freshman forward Elijah Minnie became RMU’s first duo to record a double-double in the same game since Dec. 30, 2009, when former forwards Russell Johnson (2008-13) and Dallas Green (2006-10) accomplished the feat in a 72-67 win @ Youngstown State, a span of 171 games. Stewart finished with career highs in both points (12) and assists (11), while Minnie recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. It also marks the first time a pair of Colonials have recorded a double-double in the same game at the Charles L. Sewall Center since former Colonials A.J. Jackson (2003-08) and Tony Lee (2004-08) turned the trick in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06), a span of 122 contests. Back-To-Back - Freshman forward Elijah Minnie is just the second freshman in school history to record double-doubles in consecutive games. Minnie, who posted 10 points and 10 rebounds against both Buffalo (12/7/14) and Duquesne (12/13/14), joins former forward Keith Jones (1995-99) to turn the trick. Jones finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds in each of his first two collegiate games, turning the trick in a 75-73 victory over Vermont (11/25/95) and again in a 94-60 win over Carnegie Mellon (11/30/95). Minnie has a legitimate shot at establishing a new freshman record for double-doubles this season, as the current record is held by former guard Tony Lee (2004-08), who posted four in his rookie campaign in 2004-05. Protect The Rim - If there is one thing that freshman forward Elijah Minnie has proven, it’s that he can be a force in the paint on the defensive end. In helping the Colonials post six blocks @ North Carolina (11/16/14) in RMU’s first game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, Minnie rejected a career-high three shots. Through 12 games, Minnie owns 14 rejections, an average of 1.17 per contest that ranks fourth in the Northeast Conference. Steal City - Robert Morris finished the 2013-14 campaign tops in the Northeast Conference in steals, averaging 7.08 per game. It marked the fifth time in the last seven years that the Colonials have paced the league in steals. RMU is right back at it again this season, as the Colonials enter Saturday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s tops in the NEC in steals per game (9.00). Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for Robert Morris over the last eight seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of 2007-08, Robert Morris owns a record of 120-19 (.863) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 115-17 (.871) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s five seasons as head coach, Robert Morris has posted a record of 63-13 (.829) when outrebounding its opponent. Comeback Kids - Robert Morris proved throughout the 2013-14 campaign that no lead was safe for an opponent, and it didn’t take long this year for the Colonials to show it wasn’t a fluke. In a 68-61 victory @ Bradley (11/19/14), RMU fell behind in the first half, 27-12. RMU climbed out of the 15-point deficit to earn the victory, marking the 16th time the Colonials have climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole.

The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last eight seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top four totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while LIU Brooklyn defeated Wagner, 127-77, Feb. 11, 1998. Did You Know? Robert Morris enters the 2014-15 campaign having paced the Northeast Conference against league foes in steals for six of the last seven seasons, including a league-high 8.06 per game in 2013-14. The Colonials have also led the circuit three straight seasons under fifth-year head caoch Andrew Toole entering the 2014-15 season. In 16 games against league foes last year, a trio of players recorded at least 20 steals. Guard Karvel Anderson led the way with 26 thefts, an average of 1.63 per game that ranked sixth individually in the NEC. Forward Lucky Jones ranked one spot behind Anderson in seventh place in the NEC against league opponents with an average of 1.44 steals per game, while guard Anthony Myers-Pate ranked ninth (1.31).
On The Offensive - A key reason Robert Morris earned its second consecutive home victory thanks to an 84-81 win over Delaware (12/22/14) is that the Colonials shot a season high 55.6 percent (25-for-45) from the field. In five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, RMU owns a mark of 25-4 (.862) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field, including a perfect mark of 18-0 against NEC opponents. Broken down against league foes, Robert Morris is 16-0 in the regular season and 2-0 in the NEC Tournament when converting at least half of its shots. Against non-conference opponents under Toole, RMU is 7-4 (.636) when turning the trick, including 1-1 (.500) in 2014-15. Home On The Road - Freshman guard Marcquise Reed etched his name in the Robert Morris record book by scoring a game-high 24 points @ No. 6 North Carolina (11/16/14) as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Reed established a record for most points scored by a freshman playing his first road game, eclipsing the 22 points former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) scored in a 99-94 victory @ Dayton (12/19/90). Walker, the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,965 points, was playing in his first Division I game at Robert Morris when he posted his performance against the Flyers. Reed, who is averaging 13.3 points for RMU this season, was tabbed the first Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week of the 2014-15 campaign when he garnered the honor Nov. 17, 2014. Climbing The Charts - Senior forward Lucky Jones was one of two players to score in double figures in RMU’s final non-conference game of the 2014-15 campaign @ Clemson (12/30/14), as he scored 13 points. The performance against the Tigers helped Jones push his career total for double-figure scoring games to 71, which ranks 10th all-time in program history. Jones enters Saturday’s game against Mount St. Mary’s just three double-figure scoring games away from ninth place, a spot that is currently held by former guard Forest Grant (1980-84) with 74. Freebies - A big reason forward Lucky Jones has an opportunity to finish as one of the top five scorers in program history is due to his ability to get to the charity stripe. In 11 games this season, Jones has converted 36 of his 50 attempts at the free-throw line, a success rate of 72 percent that ranks 12th in the Northeast Conference. Jones owns a career percentage of 79.1 percent (372-for-470), which ranks just outside the top 10 all-time at Robert Morris. Jones has a shot of becoming just the second player in school history to convert at least 400 career free throws. The school record of 495 is held by former point guard Velton Jones (2008-13). In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 71-70 overtime win over St. Francis Brooklyn (2/22/14) that helped the Colonials clinch the 2014 Northeast Conference regular-season championship, forward Lucky Jones became the latest member of the Colonials to hit a buzzer beater for RMU. Jones scored on a layup off an offensive rebound with 3.1 seconds left in the extra frame to lift Robert Morris to the win. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the Robert Morris basketball program since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign is defense. Despite a 64-57 setback @ Clemson (12/30/14), the Colonials own a record of 126-26 (.829) over the last eight seasons when holding their opponent to less than 70 points. In five years under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a mark of 75-19 (.798) when turning the trick. Overall in the last eight years, RMU has held its opponent to under 70 points 59.4 percent (152-of-256) of the time.

Robert Morris celebrates its 30th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2014-15. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of six times in the last 29 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009. The 2009 NEC Tournament men’s basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris at the Sewall Center:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris has become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.21 three-pointers per contest, ahead of LIU Brooklyn (7.19). Leading Robert Morris so far in 2014-15 is junior guard Rodney Pryor, who has drained 28 three-pointers, an average of 2.33 per game. 2014-15 RMU Basketball
NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010
Robert Morris Historical Tidbits In The Beginning - Robert Morris was the first institution to jump directly from the junior college ranks to NCAA Division I. RMU played basketball at the junior college level for 13 seasons from 1963 to 1976, posting a record of 287-58 (.832) under head coach Gus Krop. Krop led the Colonials to a record of 30-1 (.968) in 1968-69 in its sixth season as a junior college program, with its only loss a 79-76 setback to Paducah (Ky.) in the national title game. In his time leading Robert Morris, Krop coached nine All-Americans and also recruited Earl Cureton, a native of Detroit, Mich., who played one season with the Colonials when it was a junior college program (1975-76) as well as the first season of Division I basketball in 1976-77. Half A Century - The 2014-15 campaign marks the 52nd season of intercollegiate basketball at Robert Morris. The Colonials compiled an overall record of 287-58 (.832) in 13 years as a junior college program from 1963 to 1976 and since moving to Division I with the 1976-77 campaign has posted an overall record of 555-573 (.492). Combined, Robert Morris posted a record of 816-610 (.572) over its first 50 years as an intercollegiate program from 1963 to 2013. In honor of 50 years of intercollegiate basketball, Robert Morris enshrined the 1981-82 Colonials, the first squad to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 15, 2014. The First Superstar - Don Mackey (1963-65) was the only player in junior college history to score over 1,000 points in his two seasons with the program. A native of Homestead, Pa., Mackey finished his two years with the Colonials by scoring 1,034 points, and his 43 points in a 125-111 win over Walsh Jan. 30, 1965, still stands as the most points scored in a game by a player in a Robert Morris uniform. He went on to finish his collegiate career at Gannon University and was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 9, 2010. Mackey is one of nine members of the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame from the junior college ranks, which also includes former All-Americans Perry Johnson (1969), Cleveland Edwards (1969) and Ron Hightower (1971 and 1972). The Twirl - Arguably the best basketball player in school history, in his one season at the Division I level in a Robert Morris uniform Earl “The Twirl” Cureton (1975-77) averaged 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in 1976-77. Cureton still owns Robert Morris single-season records for rebounds (274) and rebounding average and is the only player in the program’s Division I history to average a double-double. He transferred to the University of Detroit to continue his Division I career and was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the third round of the 1979 NBA Draft. He went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA, earning a pair of championship rings, one with the 76ers in 1983 and the other with the Houston Rockets in 1994.
Charter Member - Robert Morris played independently as a Division I program for five seasons before becoming a charter member of the ECAC Metro Conference in 1981, which changed its name to the Northeast Conference in 1988. The Colonials have won seven NEC Tournament titles, the most in league history, and have also appeared in the NCAA Tournament seven times. Robert Morris has won back-to-back NEC Tournament titles on three occasions, including the first two championships in 1981 and 1982. RMU also claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament titles in 1989 and 1990 and again in 2009 and 2010. Dynamic Duo - Led by guards Chipper Harris (1980-84) and Forest “Bay” Grant (1980-84), Robert Morris claimed the first two ECAC Metro Conference Tournament championships in 1981 and 1982. In four seasons, Harris and Grant combined for career totals of 3,434 points, 869 rebounds, 991 assists and 782 steals. Harris served as RMU’s all-time leading scorer with 1,940 points from the conclusion of his career until 1994 and still owns the Robert Morris career record for steals (450), while Grant is the program’s all-time leader in assists (555). The pair helped the ECAC Metro Conference garner its first victory in the NCAA Tournament, as the Colonials upended Georgia Southern, 64-54, in a play-in game at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1983 NCAA Tournament. Harris was enshrined in the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, followed by Grant in 1996. Walk On The Ocean - Former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) continued RMU’s lineage of stellar guards when he arrived on the scene in the fall of 1990 and was a key part of a 1991-92 squad that claimed the program’s fifth NEC Tournament championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament. In his second year with the program, Walker scored at the time an RMU singleseason school record 614 points en route to being named the 1992 NEC Player of the Year, the only sophomore in league history to earn the honor. Walker, a native of Aliquippa, Pa., went on to become the program’s alltime leading scorer with 1,965 points and also owns the single-season record for scoring average (20.1 ppg as a senior in 1993-94) and career marks for 20-point scoring games (47) and scoring average (18.7 ppg). Keep On Rockin ... As part of the 2014 Battle 4 Atlantis, Robert Morris traveled to Washington, D.C., and dropped an 80-66 decision to Georgetown (11/22/14) at the Verizon Center. The home of the Hoyas became the eighth arena that the Colonials have played in that has also featured a concert by Pearl Jam since the band’s formation in 1990. Also included in the list is Rupp Arena (Lexington, Ky.), the Palace at Auburn Hills (Detroit, Mich.), the Prudential Center (Newark, N.J.), Savage Arena (Toledo, Ohio), the Wolstein Center (Cleveland, Ohio), the Bryce Jordan Center (State College, Pa.) and the A.J. Robert Morris, Jr. (January 20, 1734 – May 8, 1806) was a Liverpool-born American merchant and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly, became the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety and was chosen as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, where he served as chairman of the “Secret Committee of Trade” and as a member of the Committee of Correspondence. From 1781 to 1784, he served as the powerful Superintendent of Finance, managing the economy of the fledgling United States. As the central civilian in the government, Morris was, next to General George Washington, “the most powerful man in America.” His successful administration led to the sobriquet, “Financier of the Revolution.” He was one of Pennsylvania’s original pair of U.S. senators, serving from 1789 to 1795. A look at his legacy: - A portrait of Morris appeared on U.S. $1000 notes from 1862 to 1863 - Morris and Roger Sherman were the only two people to sign all three significant founding documents of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. - The dollar sign ("$") was in common use among private merchants during the middle of the 18th century. It referred to the two columns draped with scrolls on the Spanish milled dollar, which predated the U.S. Dollar. Morris was the first to use that symbol in official documents.
