Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 29-18 (.617). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

At the heart of the resurgence for Robert Morris since the beginning of the 200708 campaign been one aspect: Defense. Over the last five years, the Colonials have held nine opponents to 45 points or less. The latest team the Colonials held to less than 45 points was La Salle (11/25/11), as RMU earned a 51-44 victory over the Explorers at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa., as part of the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic. It marks the fewest points Robert Morris has allowed to a nonconference opponent away from home. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris has posted nine of its top 15 best defensive performances against Division I opponents in regard to points allowed. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Preseason Poll Notes: It marks the sixth straight year the Colonials have been picked to finish in the top three in the league ... Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... RMU has never been the preseason favorite to win an NEC title

The Bulldogs have dropped 11 straight games and are coming off a 72-55 setback to Lehigh (12/3/11). In that contest redshirt sophomore forward Claybrin McMath led Bryant with 14 points off the bench, converting five of his 13 shots from the floor. The Bulldogs are led by sophomore forward Alex Francis, who leads Bryant in both scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.2 rpg) while shooting 49.7 percent (87-for-175) from the field. Francis is one of three players scoring in double figures for Bryant, as sophomore guard Corey Maynard averages 13.7 points per contest while junior guard Frankie Dobbs contributes 12.2 points per game and leads Bulldogs in assists with 62, an average of 4.77 that ranks third in the NEC. Bryant Head Coach - In his fourth season on the sidelines as head coach of the Bulldogs is Tim O’Shea (Boston College ’84), who was named the seventh head coach in Bryant men’s basketball history June 23, 2008. RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris shot a season-high 53.2 percent (25-for-47) and held on in the final minute of regulation to post a 70-67 victory over Ohio, Jan. 2, at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams had given RMU a 70-62 advantage with 1:07 to play thanks to a pair of free throws, but Ohio used a full-court press to force the Colonials into multiple turnovers and close within three, 70-67, with just 49 seconds left. Reggie Keely converted a layup with 58 seconds remaining, and the following inbounds pass was stolen by TyQuane Goard, who was fouled by redshirt junior guard Velton Jones. Goard hit one of his two attempts from the stripe to pull Ohio within 70-65. Keely came up with a steal on the ensuing inbounds pass and fed Ricardo Johnson for a dunk to help the Bobcats make it a one-possession game, 70-67, and again Robert Morris turned it over on the inbounds pass, with Keely coming up with another steal. In the final 29 seconds, Ohio had four chances to tie the game but came away unsuccessful each time. D.J. Cooper missed a pair of three-pointers, including a last second opportunity at the end of regulation, while Walter Offutt missed a jumper off an offensive rebound and T.J. Hall misfired a three-pointer. RMU held on by dominating the glass, posting a 43-29 edge in rebounding while winning for the 23rd straight time when shooting at least 50 percent from the field. Jones finished with 17 points to lead the Colonials and also added six assists and a pair of steals, while Williams added 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson contributed 10 points, six boards, two assists, two blocks and three steals. Keely scored 14 points off the bench to tie for team-high honors with Ohio, as Ivo Baltic also finished with 14 points. Cooper added 13 points, seven assists and three steals for the Bobcats but struggled through a shooting night of just 3for-17, including 2-of-12 from beyond the arc. Keep It On the Down Low - Robert Morris opened the new year with a 70-67 victory @ Ohio (1/2/12) in its final non-conference victory of the season, and the Colonials picked up right where they left off in 2011. In improving to 7-2 (.778) since the beginning of December, the Colonials have not allowed any of their last nine opponents to reach the 70point plateau. RMU has yielded an average of 59.1 points per contest over that span, and the streak of nine straight games of not allowing at least 70 points in a game is a new school record. The 2008-09 Colonials turned the trick in eight straight games, including their final five regular-season contests and three victories in the 2009 NEC Tournament en route to their sixth league championship. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 77-12 (.865) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 73-10 (.880) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 21-6 (.778) when outrebounding its opponent, including a mark of 7-2 (.778) in 2011-12. RMU returns to Northeast Conference action Thursday @ Bryant leading the circuit in rebounding defense, allowing an average of just 30.9 caroms per contest. Over their last nine contests, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +7.00, including four times over that stretch posting a rebounding margin of at least +14. Freebies - Despite having his streak of 19 straight games scoring in double figures snapped by finishing with seven points @ Memphis (12/29/11), a key reason redshirt junior guard Velton Jones was able to put together that streak is his ability to get to the free-throw line. In a 70-67 win @ Ohio (1/2/12), Jones finished a perfect 6-for-6 at the stripe against the Bobcats and on the 2011-12 campaign is 79-for-106 at the chalk, a success rate of 74.5 percent that ranks 14th in the Northeast Conference. Jones, who is averaging 7.1 visits to the free-throw line and 5.3 free throws made per game so far this season, is on pace to establish a new Robert Morris single-season record for free throws. The record of 151 is held by former Colonial Gabe Jackson (1992-95), who established the mark as a senior in 1994-95. Based on his current averages, Jones is on pace to finish with 163 free throws in 2011-12, and he enters Thursday’s game @ Bryant ranked 13th all-time at RMU in career free throws made with 269. Four Score and ... In a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11), Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt junior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 18 points. Joining Jones was freshman forward Lucky Jones (16), sophomore forward Mike McFadden (11) and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams (10). In eight of RMU’s 14 games so far this season, four Colonials have scored in double figures, with Robert Morris owning a record of 6-2 (.750) in those contests. In the two seasons Andrew Toole has been the head coach at Robert Morris, the Colonials are 12-5 (.706) when at least four players score in double figures in a game. The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most consistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in 2011-12. Through the first 15 games of the year, Johnson has grabbed 83 boards, an average of 5.5 per game that ranks second for the Colonials. The program’s active leading rebounder with 471 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. Based on his current rebounding average, Johnson is on pace to become the 21st player in school history to accumulate 500 career rebounds Saturday, Jan. 21, @ Monmouth. 30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35 times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 15 games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 23.9 free-throw attempts per contest.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 59-56 win @ Youngstown State (12/22/11), redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams buried a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds to play that helped give the Colonials the victory. Williams is now the third player on RMU’s active roster that has hit a gamewinning shot in the last five seconds of a game in the last two years. Luck of the Draw - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence on the glass for Robert Morris in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, as he enters Thursday’s game @ Bryant leading RMU in rebounds with 86, an average of 5.7 per contest. Jones has been a consistent contributor on both ends of the floor in recent weeks, as in his last eight games he is averaging 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds contest. Jones has reached double figures in scoring four times over that span, including a career-high 16 points off the bench in a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11). He is also proving to be an adept free-throw shooter, as he enters Thursday’s game with a conversion rate of 81.5 percent (44-for-54) at the chalk, which ranks sixth in the Northeast Conference. Return Of The Mack - Robert Morris received a boost to its lineup when sophomore forward Mike McFadden, a transfer from Iona, became eligible to play for the Colonials after sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. McFadden made his RMU debut in a 72-64 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), supplying 13 points and six rebounds. In five games since returning to the active roster, McFadden is averaging 8.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, including a career-high nine caroms @ Memphis (12/29/11). McFadden has also proven to be an effective defender, posting eight blocks and eight steals in his first five games at Robert Morris, including a career-high three rejections in a 5956 win @ Youngstown State (12/22/11). The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Thursday’s game @ Bryant owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 82 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 67 straight starts. Jones owns 77 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 42. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 82 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while sophomore guard Anthony Myers is next, having appeared in 47 straight games. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Thanks to a 70-67 win @ Ohio (1/2/12), Robert Morris improved to 76-15 (.835) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points, including a mark of 25-9 ( .735) under Toole. Poll Position - Robert Morris made a return to the Mid-Major Top 25 poll according to CollegeInsider.com two weeks ago, slotting at No. 24 after a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/20/11). The Colonials jumped up four spots to No. 20 last week and despite a loss @ Memphis (12/29/11) over the holiday season, RMU entered this week’s action ranked No. 24 in the latest poll. RMU owns the highest ranking of any NEC institution in league history in the poll, peaking at No. 12 in February of 2008.

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.08 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.04 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
