Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 30-18 (.625). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last five seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Preseason Poll Notes: It marks the sixth straight year the Colonials have been picked to finish in the top three in the league ... Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... RMU has never been the preseason favorite to win an NEC title

RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris returned to Northeast Conference action, Jan. 5, with an 8453 victory over Bryant at the Chace Athletic Center. RMU received a balanced attack offensively in the victory, as eight different players scored at least seven points. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones led the Colonials with 15 points and also added seven assists and four steals. Early in the first half, Raphael Jordan converted a four-point play with a three-pointer and free throw thanks to a foul on freshman forward Lucky Jones to pull Bryant within one, 10-9, but a 13-0 spurt allowed Robert Morris to open up a 23-9 advantage. Six different Colonials scored during the run, including a pair of jumpers from redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson. RMU eventually stretched its lead to 27-11 after a pair of free throws from Velton Jones at the 7:26 mark of the first half, but Bryant used the long ball to put together an 18-7 surge to close within 3428 at the break. Frankie Dobbs and Jordan each hit a pair of three-pointers, while Clayton McMath added another. Ben Altit would hit a jumper in the early moments of the second half to pull the Bulldogs within 34-30, but Robert Morris scored the next 11 points, including nine from Velton Jones, to again get its lead back to double digits, 45-30. Meanwhile, the RMU defense stiffened, holding Bryant to just one field goal over a 10-minute stretch of the second half. During that span, the lead swelled to as many as 36 for the Colonials, 77-41, after a dunk from sophomore forward Mike McFadden with 6:33 to play. McFadden added 10 points for Robert Morris and was the only other Colonial in double figures scoring. Johnson, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams, Lucky Jones and sophomore guard Anthony Myers each scored nine points, while junior forward Lijah Thompson and freshman guard David Appolon both contributed seven points. Jordan scored 21 points for Bryant to take home game-high honors, finishing 6-for-7 from beyond the arc and 3-for-3 at the free-throw line, while Dobbs added 10 points. Robert Morris dominated the glass, owning a 41-26 edge in rebounding, posted 19 assists and recorded 12 steals on 23 turnovers by the Bulldogs. Leading Scorers: Jones, V. Keep It On the Down Low - Robert Morris returned to Northeast Conference play with an 84-53 victory @ Bryant (1/5/12), and the Colonials picked up right where they left off in 2011. In improving to 8-2 (.800) since the beginning of December, the Colonials have not allowed any of their last 10 opponents to reach the 70-point plateau. RMU has yielded an average of 58.5 points per contest over that span, and the streak of 10 straight games of not allowing at least 70 points in a game is a new school record. The 2008-09 Colonials turned the trick in eight straight games, including their final five regular-season contests and three victories in the 2009 NEC Tournament en route to their sixth league championship. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 78-12 (.867) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 74-10 (.881) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 22-6 (.786) when outrebounding its opponent, including a mark of 8-2 (.800) in 2011-12. RMU visits Central Connecticut State Saturday leading the circuit in rebounding defense, allowing an average of just 30.6 caroms per contest. Over their last 10 contests, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +7.8, including five times over that stretch posting a rebounding margin of at least +14. Freebies - Despite having his streak of 19 straight games scoring in double figures snapped by finishing with seven points @ Memphis (12/29/11), a key reason redshirt junior guard Velton Jones was able to put together that streak is his ability to get to the free-throw line. In an 84-53 win @ Bryant (1/5/12) in RMU’s return to Northeast Conference play, Jones finished 5-for-8 at the stripe against the Bulldogs and on the 201112 campaign is 84-for-114 at the chalk, a success rate of 73.7 percent. Jones, who is averaging 7.1 visits to the free-throw line and 5.3 free throws made per game so far this season, is on pace to establish a new Robert Morris single-season record for free throws. The record of 151 is held by former Colonial Gabe Jackson (1992-95), who established the mark as a senior in 1994-95. Based on his current averages, Jones is on pace to finish with 163 free throws in 2011-12, and he enters Saturday’s game @ Central Connecticut State ranked 12th all-time at RMU in career free throws made with 274. Four Score and ... In a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11), Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt junior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 18 points. Joining Jones was freshman forward Lucky Jones (16), sophomore forward Mike McFadden (11) and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams (10). In eight of RMU’s 14 games so far this season, four Colonials have scored in double figures, with Robert Morris owning a record of 6-2 (.750) in those contests. In the two seasons Andrew Toole has been the head coach at Robert Morris, the Colonials are 12-5 (.706) when at least four players score in double figures in a game. The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most consistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in 2011-12. Through the first 16 games of the year, Johnson has grabbed 88 boards, an average of 5.5 per game that ranks second for the Colonials. The program’s active leading rebounder with 476 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. Based on his current rebounding average, Johnson is on pace to become the 21st player in school history to accumulate 500 career rebounds Saturday, Jan. 21, @ Monmouth. 30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35 times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 16 games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 23.6 free-throw attempts per contest.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 59-56 win @ Youngstown State (12/22/11), redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams buried a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds to play that helped give the Colonials the victory. Williams is now the third player on RMU’s active roster that has hit a gamewinning shot in the last five seconds of a game in the last two years. Luck of the Draw - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence on the glass for Robert Morris in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, as he enters Saturday’s game @ Central Connecticut State leading RMU in rebounds with 94, an average of 5.9 per contest. Jones has been a consistent contributor on both ends of the floor in recent weeks, as in his last nine games he is averaging 8.7 points and 5.9 rebounds contest. Jones has reached double figures in scoring four times over that span, including a career-high 16 points off the bench in a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11). He is also proving to be an adept free-throw shooter, as he enters Saturday’s game with a conversion rate of 82.1 percent (46-for-56) at the chalk, which ranks fourth in the Northeast Conference. Return Of The Mack - Robert Morris received a boost to its lineup when sophomore forward Mike McFadden, a transfer from Iona, became eligible to play for the Colonials after sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. McFadden made his RMU debut in a 72-64 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), supplying 13 points and six rebounds. In six games since returning to the active roster, McFadden is averaging 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, including a career-high nine caroms @ Memphis (12/29/11). McFadden has also proven to be an effective defender, posting eight blocks and 10 steals in his first six games at Robert Morris, including a career-high three rejections in a 59-56 win @ Youngstown State (12/22/11). The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Saturday’s game owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 83 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 68 straight starts. Jones owns 78 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 43. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 83 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while sophomore guard Anthony Myers is next, having appeared in 48 straight games. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Thanks to an 84-53 win @ Bryant (1/5/12), Robert Morris improved to 77-15 (.837) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points, including a mark of 26-9 ( .743) under Toole. Poll Position - Robert Morris made a return to the Mid-Major Top 25 poll according to CollegeInsider.com two weeks ago, slotting at No. 24 after a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/20/11). The Colonials jumped up four spots to No. 20 last week and despite a loss @ Memphis (12/29/11) over the holiday season, RMU entered this week’s action ranked No. 24 in the latest poll. RMU owns the highest ranking of any NEC institution in league history in the poll, peaking at No. 12 in February of 2008.

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.09 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.04 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
