Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team opens a two-game road swing in the state of New Jersey Thursday in search of its first Northeast Conference victory of the 201213 campaign with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Fairleigh Dickinson at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, N.J. The Colonials are coming off a 77-70 setback to Central Connecticut State (1/5/13) at the Charles L. Sewall Center that wrapped up a two-game homestand to open league play and also marked their third straight loss. Against FDU, Robert Morris is looking to avoid its first four-game losing streak since the 2004-05 season as well as its first 0-3 start in the NEC since 1995-96. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials against the Blue Devils with 22 points and four assists, while junior guard Karvel Anderson added 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Upon completion of its game against FDU Thursday, Robert Morris will conclude its twogame road trip with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Monmouth at the MAC in West Long Branch, N.J, in a contest that will be televised live on MSG.

Quick Stat of the Night - Since head coach Andrew Toole joined the Robert Morris coaching staff in 2007 under former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), the foundation and emphasis of the program has been on defense. In order to snap a three-game losing streak Thursday @ Fairleigh Dickinson, the Colonials will have to get back to those roots. Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 52-32 (.619).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or individual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Surf Board - Russell Johnson opened the 2012-13 campaign dealing with an ankle injury that limited his abilities in the early going of the season, but the redshirt senior forward seems to be getting into a groove. Over the course of the last four games, Johnson has averaged 7.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 44 percent (11-for-25) from the field and 71.4 percent (5-for-7) at the free-throw line. Johnson has grabbed a season-high eight rebounds three times over that span and on the 2012-13 campaign ranks second for the Colonials in rebounding with an average of 5.6 per game. The program’s active leader in rebounds with 627, Johnson needs 16 boards to crack the top five all-time at Robert Morris for career caroms. Currently sitting in fifth place is former forward Keith Jones, who grabbed 642 boards from 1995 to 1998. Johnson would need to average 7.8 rebounds over RMU’s final 16 regular-season contests to eclipse the career record of 751 that is held by former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08).

Chicks Dig The Long Ball - The addition of junior guard Karvel Anderson has given Robert Morris another threat from beyond the three-point arc, and his ability to convert from deep has also helped his teammates. The Colonials enter Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson having averaged 10.3 three-pointers per contest over the course of their last eight games.

In seven of those games RMU has hit at least nine three-pointers. Coincidentally, the last eight games have all been with Anderson as a member of the starting lineup, the first starts of his Division I career. As a starter, Anderson is averaging 15.4 points per game and is shooting 54.4 percent (43-for-79) from the field, including 53.4 percent (31-for-58) from deep.

Tag Team - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and junior guard Karvel Anderson have teamed up this season to give Robert Morris a lethal combination from deep. Through the first 15 games of the 2012-13 season, the duo have combined for 75 three-pointers, an average of 5.0 per contest. Anderson enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson ranked second in the Northeast Conference in three-pointers per game (2.73), while Williams ranks eighth (2.27). The duo are on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular season with 155 three-pointers, which would place Anderson and Williams as the top three-point shooting tandem in school history. The current record of 150 is held by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (200509) and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10), who turned the trick in 2008-09.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and the proof is in the numbers. Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assists (5.27 per game) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.84). Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 84 dimes to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84). He would need to average 5.3 assists per game over RMU’s final 17 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark.

Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials against Central Connecticut State (1/5/12) with 22 points , hitting seven of his 16 shots from the field, including 2-of-6 from long range, and going 6-for-9 at the free-throw. He also added a trio of steals against the Blue Devils. For Jones, it marked the 16th time in his career he’s eclipsed 20 points in a game, which ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones needs four 20+ point performances to become just the eighth player in school history to score at least 20 points in a game 20 times. RMU’s all-time leader in career 20+ point games is all-time leading scorer Myron Walker, who turned the trick 47 times from 1990 to 1994.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson having shot 74.8 percent (247-for-330) at the chalk in its first 15 games of 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference.

50 Cent - Third-year head coach Andrew Toole picked up his 50th career victory thanks to RMU’s 66-54 win @ Hampton (12/8/12). The victory came in his 79th game on the sidelines guiding the Colonials. Toole is the second fastest head coach in school history to reach 50 career wins, trailing only former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), who turned the trick in his 72nd game at Robert Morris.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 11663, on February 22, 2000. It marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game to pace the NEC, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. Leading the Colonials in 2011-12 was redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who ranked third in the NEC with an average of 1.84 thefts per game, while junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate ranked 11th (1.24 spg).

Scouting the Knights - Fairleigh Dickinson owns an overall record of 6-8 (.429) entering Thursday’s game against Robert Morris, including a 1-1 (.500) mark in the Northeast Conference.

The Knights are coming off a 68-55 setback @ Wagner (1/5/13), a game in which senior forward Kinu Rochford paced FDU with 16 points and 16 rebounds. It marked the fourth straight double-double for Rochford, who leads the Knights in both scoring (17.2 ppg) and rebounding (10.7 rpg). Rochford is one of three players for Fairleigh Dickinson that is averaging in double figure scoring, as senior guard Melquan Bolding produces a 14.9 points per game average, while senior guard Lonnie Robinson averages 12.9 points per game. Freshman guard Sekou Harris, meanwhile, scores at an 8.8 points per game clip and is leading the Knights in assists with 37 in nine games, an average of 4.1 per contest.

Fairleigh Dickinson Head Coach - Greg Vetrone (C.W. Post ’86) is in his fourth season as head of the Knights after taking over the reigns in the summer of 2009. An assistant coach with Fairleigh Dickinson during the 2008-09 campaign and in his first head coaching job, Vetrone owns an overall record of 25-79 (.240). Vetrone has had assistant coaching stops at C.W. Post, California-Irvine and UNLV. RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris slipped to 0-2 in the Northeast Conference for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign, Jan. 5, and dropped their third straight game overall with a 7770 setback to Central Connecticut State at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The first half featured four ties and six lead changes, with Matt Hunter giving CCSU a 31-26 lead at the 4:38 mark of the first half with a layup. Robert Morris responded with a three-pointer from junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate and a layup from sophomore guard David Appolon to tie the game, 31-31, then grabbed a 33-32 edge with a jumper from redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson with 3:02 to go before the break. Central Connecticut State would close the half on a 6-1 spurt to grab a 38-33 advantage at halftime, as Kyle Vinales hit a three-pointer, Joe Efese converted a layup and Terrell Allen went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. The Blue Devils surged to begin the second half, using a 9-3 run to open up their first double-digit lead of the contest, 51-40, with 15:10 to play. Brandon Peel scored four points for CCSU, while Vinales hit a three-pointer and a jumper. RMU didn't wilt, hanging a 13-3 run of its own on Central Connecticut State to take a 54-53 edge at the 11:08 mark of the second half. Junior forward Vaughn Morgan started the run with a dunk, while junior guard Karvel Anderson scored five points. Vinales, however, put the Blue Devils on top for good with a jumper with 10:33 to go, part of a 34-point performance for game-high honors on the night. Vinales converted 12 of his 22 shots from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and was 6-for-9 at the charity stripe. In two career games at the Sewall Center, Vinales has scored 66 points. The Colonials were led by redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the second straight game with 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting. He also added four assists and three steals. Anderson was the only other player in double figures for Robert Morris, scoring 15 points while adding three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

The Race to 1,000 - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson reached double-figures in scoring for the first time on the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center with 14 points. Johnson reached double figures on the strength of an 11-for-12 performance at the free-throw line, establishing career highs in both categories. Johnson is now just 53 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, meanwhile, is 224 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that Robert Morris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Through the first 15 games of the season, Morgan has recorded 21 blocks, an average of 1.40 per contest that ranks third in the Northeast Conference behind Wagner’s Noafall Folahan and Mario Moody. Based on his current average, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish the regular season with 43 blocks.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (471) and free-throw attempts (649), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson leading the Colonials in both free throws (74) and free-throw attempts (89), a success rate of 83.1 percent that ranks fifth in the Northeast Conference.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting assignments. Williams has started 57 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (200810) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a 110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones became the sixth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the NEC in steals against league foes in 2011-12. Jones averaged 2.39 thefts per contest, recording at least three steals in eight of RMU’s 16 tilts against league opponents. Jones joins former Colonials Tony Lee (2004-08) and Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) to turn the trick. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in 2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg), while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2 spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). Jones is the fourth Colonial overall to lead the NEC in steals against league foes, joining former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000).

10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his sixth double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign @ Arkansas (12/20/12), scoring a season-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a 5-for-6 performance from beyond the arc. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Thursday’s tilt @ Fairleigh Dickinson with a record of 27-8 (.771) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the Robert Morris roster. RMU’s loss @ Arkansas snapped a streak of eight consecutive wins when Williams scored at least 10 points in a game.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic.

In a 61-58 victory @ Campbell (12/4/12), junior guard Karvel Anderson buried a threepointer with 4.5 seconds left to help lift the Colonials to the win. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 119 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 113 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and thanks to his start @ Arkansas (12/20/12) ranks third all-time at RMU in career starts, trailing only former Colonials Andre Boyd (114) and Jeremy Chappell (120).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 66-61 win @ LouisianaLafayette (12/18/12), Robert Morris owns a record to 96-19 (.835) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 45-12 (.789) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 84 games on the sidelines over the last three seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 57 contests, an amazing 67.8 percent of the time.

Included in those 57 contests are 25 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMU owning an astounding mark of 24-1 (.960) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 5853 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 23 straight when turning the trick.

Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for Robert Morris over the last six seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Four Score and ... In a 91-69 victory over Duquesne (12/15/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 22 points. Joining Jones was redshirt junior guard Coron Williams (16), junior forward Mike McFadden (12) and sophomore forward Lucky Jones (10).

RMU has had four players reach double figures in scoring a total of 27 times in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, with the Colonials owning a record of 18-9 (.667) in those contests. Included in that stretch is a perfect 3-2 (.600) record so far on the 2012-13 campaign.

On The Offensive - Bolstered by a shooting percentage of 65.6 percent (21for-32) in the second half of a 91-69 win over Duquesne (12/15/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, RMU produced one of its best shooting nights of the 2012-13 campaign. The Colonials finished the game with a shooting percentage of 50.7 percent (34-for-67), including a mark of 46.4 percent (13for-28) from beyond the arc. RMU has now won 30 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor dating back to the 200809 season. The last loss for Robert Morris when hitting at least half its shots came in a 92-72 setback @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47).

Jones turned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first 13 games in 2011-12. Over that span, Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest.

The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.

Since the start of the 2002-03 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.12 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn for the most in the NEC. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book. So far this season, the Colonials have been led by junior guard Karvel Anderson with 41 three-pointers.
