Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team concludes a two-game road swing through the Garden State Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. tip at the MAC against Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J., in a contest that will be televised live on MSG. The Colonials are coming off an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams led RMU against the Knights with a season-high 27 points, converting nine of his 12 attempts from the field, including 8-of-10 from beyond the arc, while going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Williams was one of five players to score in double figures in the victory, as he was joined by forwards Mike McFadden (12), Stephan Hawkins (12) and Russell Johnson (10) and guard Anthony Myers-Pate (10). The Colonials return home to the Charles L. Sewall Center for three of their next four games after taking on the Hawks Saturday, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Sacred Heart Thursday, Jan. 17.

Quick Stat of the Night - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams was in the zone in an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), tying a career-high with eight three-pointers en route to a season-high 27 points. Williams also connected for eight three-pointers in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Williams is also the first player to convert at least eight field goals from beyond the arc in a road game since former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000) finished 9-for-15 from deep in a 66-59 victory @ Monmouth (2/5/00), a span of 206 games. Williams enters Saturday’s tilt against the Hawks at the MAC ranked second in the NEC in both three-point field goal percentage (.483) and three-point field goals per game (2.63) and is 22 triples shy of becoming the seventh player in school history with at least 200 career three-pointers.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 53-32 (.624).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or individual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Road Warrior - Despite struggling offensively at home during RMU’s first two games of the Northeast Conference slate, no player for Robert Morris has been as locked in on the road lately than redshirt junior guard Coron Williams. Entering Saturday’s contest @ Monmouth, Williams has averaged 18.0 points and 2.8 rebounds over RMU’s last four road tilts, converting 64.9 percent (24-for-37) of his shots from the field, including an unconscious 71.4 percent (20-of-28) of his attempts from beyond the arc. Overall in eight road games this season Williams has scored at a 12.6 points per game clip while shooting 47.9 percent (34for-71) from the floor, including 50.9 percent (28-for-55) from deep.

Surf Board - Russell Johnson opened the 2012-13 campaign dealing with an ankle injury that limited his abilities in the early going of the season, but the redshirt senior forward seems to be getting into a groove. Over the course of the last five games, Johnson has averaged 7.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest while shooting 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from the field and 77.8 percent (7-for-9) at the free-throw line. Johnson has grabbed at least eight rebounds four times over that span, including a season-high 10 caroms in an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13) as part of his sixth career double-double. The program’s active leader in rebounds with 637, Johnson needs just six boards to crack the top five alltime at Robert Morris for career caroms. Johnson would need to average 7.7 rebounds over RMU’s final 15 regular-season contests to eclipse the career record of 751 that is held by former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08).

Chicks Dig The Long Ball - The addition of junior guard Karvel Anderson has given Robert Morris another threat from beyond the three-point arc, and his ability to convert from deep has also helped his teammates. The Colonials enter Saturday’s game @ Monmouth having averaged 10.6 three-pointers per contest over the course of their last nine games. In eight of those games RMU has hit at least nine three-pointers. Coincidentally, the last nine games have all been with Anderson as a member of the starting lineup, the first starts of his Division I career. As a starter, Anderson is averaging 14.3 points per game and is shooting 54.1 percent (46-for-85) from the field, including 50.8 percent (31-for-61) from deep.

Tag Team - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and junior guard Karvel Anderson have teamed up this season to give Robert Morris a lethal combination from deep. Through the first 16 games of the 2012-13 season, the duo have combined for 83 three-pointers, an average of 5.2 per contest. Williams enters Saturday’s game @ Monmouth ranked second in the Northeast Conference in three-pointers per game (2.63), while Anderson ranks fifth (2.56). The duo are on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular season with 161 three-pointers, which would place Anderson and Williams as the top three-point shooting tandem in school history. The current record of 150 is held by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10), who turned the trick in 2008-09.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and the proof is in the numbers. Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Monmouth ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assists (5.63 per game) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.96).

Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 73 dimes to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (198084). He would need to average 4.9 assists per game over RMU’s final 16 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark.

Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials against Central Connecticut State (1/5/12) with 22 points , hitting seven of his 16 shots from the field, including 2-of-6 from long range, and going 6-for-9 at the free-throw. He also added a trio of steals against the Blue Devils. For Jones, it marked the 16th time in his career he’s eclipsed 20 points in a game, which ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones needs four 20+ point performances to become just the eighth player in school history to score at least 20 points in a game 20 times.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

It marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game to pace the NEC, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. Leading the Colonials in 2011-12 was redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who ranked third in the NEC with an average of 1.84 thefts per game, while junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate ranked 11th (1.24 spg).

Scouting the Hawks - Monmouth snapped a seven-game losing streak thanks to a 65-60 victory over Saint Francis University (1/10/13) and enters Saturday’s game against Robert Morris sporting an overall record of 6-10 (.375), including a mark of 1-2 (.333) in the Northeast Conference.

Against the Red Flash, senior guard Jesse Steele led the Hawks with 17 points, five rebounds and three steals, converting six of his 15 shots from the field, including a 5-for-8 performance from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Andrew Nicholas added 15 points in the win over Saint Francis U. and is Monmouth’s leading scorer, producing a points per game average of 14.3.

Nicholas and Steele have combined for 63 three-pointers so far on the 2012-13 campaign, with Nicholas owning a team-high 33. The leading rebounder for the Hawks is senior forward Ed Waite, who pulls down an average of 5.1 caroms per contest and scores 7.2 points per game.

Monmouth Head Coach - King Rice (North Carolina ’92), a former point guard under Hall of Fame Head Coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, is in his second year as head coach of the Hawks. Rice is the fifth head coach in the history of the Monmouth program, and he enters Saturday’s game with an overall record of 18-30 (.375). A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Rice spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt from 2006 to 2011 prior to his hiring with the Hawks.

RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris snapped a three-game losing streak, Jan. 10, and picked up its first Northeast Conference victory with an 88-54 win over Fairleigh Dickinson at Stratis Arena. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams led five players in double figures scoring for RMU with 27 points, converting nine of his 12 shots from the field, including an 8-for-10 performance from beyond the arc, and going 1-for-1 at the free-throw line. Williams scored 11 points in the opening five and-a-half minutes of action to help bolster Robert Morris to an early 17-10 lead at the 14:35 mark of the first half. The Colonials finished the game 13-for-24 (54.2 percent) from beyond the arc, and sophomore guard David Appolon gave RMU its first double-digit lead, 30-20, with a trifecta with 5:41 to play before halftime. Appolon's three-pointer helped ignite a 19-5 run to close out the first half that gave Robert Morris a 44-25 advantage at the break.

During the spurt, junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate and redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson also connected from long range. Williams helped the Colonials extend their lead to 61-29 in the first six minutes of the second half with a trio of three-pointers as part of a 17-4 spurt after intermission. The Knights, however, would score the next 10 points of the contest to close to within 61-39 as Melquan Bolding scored five points, while Dylan Moody connected from beyond the arc. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones helped stem the tide with a layup, and Robert Morris took its biggest lead, 86-49, with just 1:24 to go after layup from Myers-Pate. Joining Williams in double figures scoring for RMU were junior forward Mike McFadden, freshman forward Stephan Hawkins, Johnson and Myers-Pate. McFadden scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Hawkins scored a career-high 12 points and also posted five boards. Johnson registered his first double-double of the 2012-13 campaign with 10 points and a game-high 10 caroms, while Myers-Pate finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.

A Confidence Boost - Freshman forward Stephan Hawkins put forth the most complete effort of his young career in an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), scoring a career-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and a 2-for-3 performance at the free-throw line while also grabbing five rebounds. Hawkins entered the matchup against the Knights having been held scoreless in each of his previous four games while scoring a total of 12 points in his last nine contests.On the 2012-13 campaign, Hawkins plays an average of 10.7 minutes per contest and is producing averages of 2.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the field. In addition, of his 43 boards, 18 have come on the offensive glass.

The Race to 1,000 - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson recorded his first doubledouble of the 2012-13 campaign and sixth of his career in an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), finishing with 10 points on a 3-for-5 shooting performance from the field, including 2-of-3 from deep, and going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line while grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds. Johnson is now just 43 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000-point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, meanwhile, is 197 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (474) and free-throw attempts (655), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Monmouth leading the Colonials in both free throws (77) and free-throw attempts (95), a success rate of 81.1 percent that ranks sixth in the Northeast Conference.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting assignments. Williams has started 58 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (200810) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a 110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones became the sixth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the NEC in steals against league foes in 2011-12. Jones averaged 2.39 thefts per contest, recording at least three steals in eight of RMU’s 16 tilts against league opponents. Jones joins former Colonials Tony Lee (2004-08) and Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) to turn the trick. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in 2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg), while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2 spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). Jones is the fourth Colonial overall to lead the NEC in steals against league foes, joining former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000).

10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his seventh double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign in an 88-54 win @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13) with a season-high 27 points. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Saturday’s tilt @ Monmouth with a record of 28-8 (.778) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the Robert Morris roster. RMU has also won nine of its last 10 games when Williams scores in double figures, with its only setback a 79-74 loss @ Arkansas (12/20/12) when he finished with 17 points.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic.

In a 61-58 victory @ Campbell (12/4/12), junior guard Karvel Anderson buried a threepointer with 4.5 seconds left to help lift the Colonials to the win. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 120 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 114 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and thanks to his start @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13) is tied for second all-time at RMU in career starts with former Colonial Andre Boyd (114) and trailing only Jeremy Chappell (120).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), Robert Morris owns a record to 97-19 (.836) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 46-12 (.793) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 85 games on the sidelines over the last three seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 58 contests, an amazing 68.2 percent of the time.

Included in those 58 contests are 26 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMU owning an astounding mark of 25-1 (.962) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 5853 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 24 straight when turning the trick.

The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.

Since the start of the 2002-03 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.14 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn for the most in the NEC. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book.
