Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team makes its annual two-game swing through of the state of New Jersey, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. tip Thursday against Fairleigh Dickinson at Stratis Arena in Teaneck, N.J. The Colonials are coming off a 70-67 victory over Sacred Heart (1/14/12) as senior forward Lawrence Bridges hit three free throws in the final 51 seconds to help lift RMU to the win. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris in its victory over the Pioneers with 20 points, converting eight of his 13 attempts from the field, including a 4-for-6 performance from long range. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones added 18 points, five assists and three steals in his first game off the bench in over two years. The Colonials shot 49 percent (24-for-49) from the field against the Pioneers, their highest shooting percentage at home on the 2011-12 campaign. Robert Morris concludes its two-game road trip after taking on Fairleigh Dickinson Thursday night with a 7:00 p.m. tip @ Monmouth Saturday in West Long Branch, N.J.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 31-20 (.608). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last five seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Did You Know? Junior forward Lijah Thompson finished the 2010-11 campaign having converted 55.5 percent (106-for-191) of his attempts from the floor, a success rate that led the Northeast Conference. Thompson became the fourth Colonial in school history to lead the circuit in field goal percentage and the first since former guard Tony Lee (2004-08) paced the NEC by shooting 59.3 percent from the field during his senior season in 2006-07. The two other Colonials to lead the NEC in field goal percentage are former forward Steve Napper (1995-98), who shot 66.2 percent in 1997-98, and former forward Chaz McCrommon (2000-05), who converted 52.3 percent of his shots during the 2003-04 campaign.

Scouting the Knights - Fairleigh Dickinson enters Thursday’s game with Robert Morris sporting an overall record of 1-16, including an 0-6 mark in the Northeast Conference. The Knights are coming off an 87-83 setback to Longwood (1/16/12), their 14th consecutive loss. Junior guard Melquan Bolding led FDU against the Lancers with a career-high 38 points, including 25 in the second half. Bolding finished 12-for-24 shooting against Longwood and was a perfect 10-for10 from the free-throw line. In his 15 games, Bolding has averaged 14.5 points per contest, tops for the Knights. Bolding is one of three players to average in double figures scoring for Fairlegh Dickinson, as junior guard Lonnie Hayes scores at a 13.0 points per game clip and leads the Knights in points (45) and steals (22), while graduate forward George Goode scores at a 12.4 points per game clip and leads FDU in rebounding, grabbing an average of 7.9 caroms per game. Fairleigh Dickinson Head Coach - Greg Vetrone (C.W. Post ’86) is in his third season as head of the Knights after taking over the reigns in the summer of 2009. An assistant coach with Fairleigh Dickinson during the 2008-09 campaign and in his first head coaching job, Vetrone owns an overall record of 17-61 (.218). Vetrone has had assistant coaching stops at C.W. Post, California-Irvine and UNLV. RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris snapped a two-game slide, Jan. 14, by hanging on for a 70-67 victory over Sacred Heart. Leading, 60-50, with just under six and-a-half minutes to play, Sacred Heart used a 14-5 run to close within one, 65-64, with 3:28 remaining. Shane Gibson hit a pair of three-pointers during the surge, while Louis Montes converted a three-point play. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones helped stem the tide by hitting a layup to give RMU a 67-64 edge and during the score was fouled by Montes. Jones missed the chance at three-point play, however, by missing the free-throw. On Sacred Heart's next possession, Steve Glowiak missed a three-pointer, but Montes came up with the offensive rebound. Montes found a wide open Gibson, who buried his seventh three-pointer of the contest to knot the game, 67-67, and help the Pioneers climb out of a 15-point deficit in the second half. The score remained tied until under a minute to go, when senior forward Lawrence Bridges was fouled by Montes going to the basket. Bridges hit both free throws to give RMU a 69-67 edge. Montes missed a threepointer with 18 seconds to play, and Bridges came up with the rebound and was immediately fouled by Chris Evans. Bridges hit the back end of his two free throws to push Robert Morris to a 70-67 lead. Sacred Heart had a chance to tie, but Gibson missed a jumper, with junior forward Lijah Thompson grabbing the rebound before being fouled. Thompson missed both free throws with 3.8 seconds left, and Phil Gaetano's last second half-court heave to try and send the game to overtime was short. Robert Morris led by seven at halftime, 37-30, and stretched its lead to double digits in the opening minutes of the second half, 46-35, on a three-pointer from redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams. Back-to-back layups from sophomore forward Mike McFadden eventually pushed the Colonials to their biggest advantage of the game, 5338, with 11:31 to go before seven straight points by Sacred Heart trimmed RMU's lead to 53-45. Sparks - RMU featured its third different starting lineup of the season in a 70-67 victory over Sacred Heart (1/14/12), as junior center Lijah Thompson returned to the starting lineup for the first time since December, freshman forward Lucky Jones earned his first collegiate start and sophomore guard Anthony Myers made his first start since Feb. 5, 2011. Thompson and Jones joined senior forward Lawrence Bridges in a starting frontcourt that grabbed 24 of RMU’s 35 rebounds, including nine from Jones and a seasonhigh eight from Thompson. Through 19 games of the 2011-12 campaign, the Colonials are 8-2 (.800) when Jones grabs at least six rebounds in a game. Surf Board - RMU’s prowess on the glass this season has continued in Northeast Conference play, as the Colonials enter Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson leading the league in rebounding defense (27.7 rpg) and own a margin of +8.7 on the boards against conference foes, also tops in the NEC. In the four wins for Robert Morris this season in NEC play, the Colonials own a margin of +10.5 in rebounding. Closing In - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters RMU’s two-game road swing through New Jersey close to making history. Jones has scored 967 career points entering Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/14/12) and is 33 points shy of becoming the 20th player in school history to join the Robert Morris 1,000-point club. Jones would become the first player since former guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2007-08 campaign. Toe The Line - A big key to the reason that redshirt junior guard Velton Jones leads Robert Morris in scoring this season with an average of 15.7 points per game is his ability to get to the free-throw line. Against Quinnipiac (1/12/12), Jones became the fourth Colonial in school history to go a perfect 10-for-10 at the stripe at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson ranked 13th in the Northeast Conference in free-throw percentage (.756) and is on pace to establish a new Robert Morris single-season record for free throws. The record of 151 is held by former Colonial Gabe Jackson (1992-95), who established the mark as a senior in 1994-95. Jones is on pace to finish with 162 free throws in 2011-12, and he enters Thursday’s tilt tied for 10th all-time at RMU in career free throws made with 289. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last five seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 79-13 (.859) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 75-11 (.872) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 23-7 (.767) when outrebounding its opponent, including a mark of 9-3 (.750) in 2011-12. RMU travels to Fairleigh Dickinson Thursday leading the circuit in rebounding defense, allowing an average of just 30.4 caroms per contest. Over their last 13 contests, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +7.3, including six times over that stretch posting a rebounding margin of at least +13. The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most consistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in 2011-12. Johnson has grabbed 97 boards in 18 games depsite missing RMU’s 70-67 win over Sacred Heart (1/14/12), an average of 5.4 per game that ranks second for the Colonials. The program’s active leading rebounder with 485 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. 30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35 times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 19 games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 23.3 free-throw attempts per contest.

Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams became the fourth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the Northeast Conference in three-point field goal percentage against league foes in 2010-11. Williams, who shot 48.4 percent (30for-62) from long range against the NEC, joined former Colonials Aaron Thomas, Derek Coleman and Jimmy Langhurst. Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04 against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent (51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurst paced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).

Score Center - Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams found his shooting touch in a 70-67 win over Sacred Heart (1/14/12), hitting eight of his 13 shots from the floor, including a 4-for-6 performance from lon g range, to pace the Colonials with 20 points. It marked his highest scoring output since finishing with a career-high 28 points in an 8357 win over Rider (11/11/11) in the 2011-12 season opener. In the last two years, when Williams scores at least 15 points in a game, the Colonials are 7-2 (.778). Overall, RMU is 15-5 (.750) when Williams scores in double figures. In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 59-56 win @ Youngstown State (12/22/11), redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams buried a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds to play that helped give the Colonials the victory. Lucky Charms - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence on the glass for Robert Morris in 2011-12, as he enters Thursday’s game @ Fairleigh Dickinson leading RMU in rebounds with 117, an average of 6.2 per contest. Jones is looking to become just the second freshman in school history to grab at least 200 rebounds in his first collegiate season. The freshman record is held by former Anthony Dickens (198590), who grabbed 237 caroms in 1985-86. Jones has also proven to be an adept free-throw shooter in his first season at Robert Morris. On the 2011-12 campaign he owns a conversion rate of 83.9 percent (52-for-62) at the chalk, which ranks third in the Northeast Conference. Jones enters Thursday’s game having converted each of his last 13 attempts at the stripe over his last six games, and in his last nine contests is shooting 93.9 percent (31-for-33) at the free-throw line. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Thursday’s game owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 86 straight games for RMU dating back to the 200910 campaign and owns 80 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 45. Sewall Center, Robert Morris improved to 78-16 (.830) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In two seasons under Toole, the Colonials are 27-10 (.730) when turning the trick. Four Score and ... In a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11), Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt junior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 18 points. 2010-11 RMU Basketball
Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.08 three-pointers per contest, just ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has also averaged 7.06 three-pointers a game. In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48.
