Robert Morris University

Robert Morris University Athletics Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 30 Northeast Conference championships among its 22 sports, including seven in volleyball, five in football and five in softball. The women’s volleyball team claimed its fifth straight NEC championship as well as its fifth straight berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2003. In the NCAA Tournament, RMU faced off against Big 10 opponents in first round in each of its five appearances, losing to eventual national champion Penn State in 1999, Minnesota in 2000, Ohio State in 2001 and 2002 and Penn State in 2003. Over the course of the last five years, the Colonial women’s volleyball team has posted an overall record of 120-61, including a school record 30 victories in 2001. Even more astounding has been RMU’s record against NEC foes. Over the last five years the Colonials win over 95 percent ahead of the time against league opponents with a 44-2 mark. Also during the 2003-04 athletics campaign, freshman Stephanie Kuhn became the first track and field athlete at Robert Morris to qualify for the NCAA Championships when she placed second in the javelin at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor East Regional with a school-record throw of 151’10”. The football team, meanwhile, finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA MidMajor National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and is slated to move into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in the fall of 2005. Meanwhile, the women’s crew team, under the guidance of head coach Liz Jones, claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA nonscholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first. Robert Morris has sent 12 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball and volleyball have made an NEC record five 2004 Colonial Men’s Soccer

appearances, with the men’s basketball qualifying in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1992 and the volleyball team each of the last five years (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003). The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice (1993 and 1994). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft and spent the 2002 season with the Colorado Rapids of the MLS. Five other former Colonial men’s soccer players have played professionally, as Steve Bell (1997) and Doug Petras (1994) saw action with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, while Rhian Dodds (2003) plays for the Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. Said Ali (2004) and Jamie Dodds (2004), each an All-NEC First Team selection in 2003, signed with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Pro Soccer League and the Toronto Lynx of the A-League, respectively, in 2004. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL coach in Dan Radakovich, who spent 18 years as an NFL assistant and is currently RMU’s assistant head coach. Joining the football coaching staff in the summer of 2003 was John Banaszak, who became the third member of the staff with a background in the NFL. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

RMU DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Robert Morris University provides opportunities for our studentathletes to receive a quality experience both in the classroom and in intercollegiate athletic competition. Athletics enhances the intellectual, social, and personal development of our studentathletes, helping them to grow through their experience at the University and to prepare for meaningful careers and lives. Toward this purpose, the Department of Athletics promotes academic achievement, good sporting and ethical conduct, and equitable opportunity for students and staff, including women and minorities. The guiding principle of the University is to focus on academics first; therefore we view our successes based not on wins and losses but as linked to the educational mission of the University and the welfare of our student-athletes.

Bill Denniston Head Coach, Robert Morris University When Bill Denniston took over the reins of the men’s soccer program at Robert Morris University in 1997, he inherited one of the richest athletic programs at the University. Now in his eighth season, Denniston has come full circle. Last season, the Colonials made their third straight appearance in the Northeast Conference tournament, finishing the season with a 7-7-5 record. Two of his players, Said Ali and Jamie Dodds, signed professional contracts after the 2003 season. In 2001, Denniston earned NEC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Colonials to their first NEC regular-season championships since 1996. He followed that up by taking RMU to the NEC tournament once again in 2002. Yet a regular season championship is not the final goal for Denniston. His ultimate goal is the NCAA Tournament. In seven years as head coach of the Colonials, Denniston has compiled an overall record of 46-75-14. Prior to his stint with Robert Morris, Denniston served three years as the head

coach for Alderson Broaddus (W. Va.) College, guiding the Battlers to a record of 37-17-4 and national rankings in each of his three years. His 1995 squad finished with a national ranking of No. 11, the first year the school participated in Division II athletics, and for those efforts he was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. While with Alderson Broaddus, Denniston also served as assistant athletic director. Before becoming head coach of the Battlers, Denniston spent four seasons as assistant men’s soccer coach at Bethany (W.Va.) College. In each of his four years there, Bethany finished with a national ranking of No. 14 or higher in Division III, including a No. 2 ranking in 1993. In his 12 years as an assistant and head coach, Denniston has helped to develop 51 all-conference selections, five Academic All-Americans, four conference MVPs and four All-Americans. A 1983 graduate of Bethany with a degree in physical education, Denniston was a four-year All-Presidents Athletic Conference selection and a three-year

All-American. He was also named the PAC’s most valuable player in 1980, was captain of the 1982 Bison squad that was a national finalist and was a Senior Bowl nominee in 1982. A father of three, Denniston and his wife, Kathy, reside in Moon Township.

Denniston Year-by-Year Bill Denniston brought with him an impressive background in soccer after being named head coach at Robert Morris in 1997, and he has helped return the Colonials to the top of the NEC standings. A look at his accomplishments as a head coach: Year

John Larson

Angela Formaz, ATC

In his fifth season on the Robert Morris coaching staff is John Larson. A native of Moon Township, Larson assists with all facets of the soccer program. Larson played four years at Moon Area High School, claiming a Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (WPIAL) Championship before playing goalkeeper for one season at Villanova University before graduating in 1986. He has also played with the Beadling National club team. Larson and his wife of seven years, Vanessa, reside in Moon Township.

Angela Formaz is in her second season as a graduate assistant in the athletic training office at Robert Morris. She is pursuing a master's degree in instructional leadership. Formaz is originally from Wadsworth, Ohio, and attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, where she received her Bachelor of Science in sports management with an emphasis on athletic training. She is certified through the National Athletic Trainers Association. In addition to covering men's soccer at RMU, Formaz is also the athletic trainer for women's basketball and outdoor track and field.

2004 Outlook Robert Morris University Head coach Bill Denniston has guided the Robert Morris University men’s soccer team to the Northeast Conference playoffs in each of the past three seasons and looks to continue the streak in his eighth season at the helm of the Colonial program. However, the route that Denniston and the Colonials follow in 2004 will be different than in years past. After leading the NEC in goals last season, Denniston is counting on the defense – namely returning starting backs Mike DelGreco, Allan Brown, Mark Bono and Brian Midock along with starting goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski – to lead the team into the postseason in 2004. “The strength of this year’s team is going to be our back five,” said Denniston. “All four starting backs from the spring plus Chencinski return. We have a lot of depth at midfield but we still need to find someone to step up at forward after the graduation of Said Ali and Jamie Dodds.” RMU returns 12 lettermen and seven starters from last year’s 7-7-5 squad. The Colonials took fourth in the NEC regularseason with a 5-2-2 regular season mark before bowing out of the post-season with a first-round loss to Fairleigh Dickinson. “Of our playoff runs in the last three years, I feel our performance last season against Fairleigh Dickinson was our best

DAVID CURRIE 6

effort,” said Denniston. “Our conference is so competitive that any team that makes the playoffs can take home the championship. I hope the experience that our players have gained over the last three years will help push us over the top this season. “I’m hoping some of the incoming freshmen along with moving some of our returning players back to their natural positions can add a spark to our attack,” said Denniston. Senior Joe Di Buono, the Colonials leading returning scorer and a secondteam All-NEC pick in 2003, is one of those players who will return to their natural position as he moves to forward after spending last season in the midfield. Di Buono had five goals and an assist in 19 games last season. Sophomore Mark Klabnik should also help carry the scoring burden after a solid rookie season in which he had a goal and an assist while starting in seven games at forward. In the midfield, junior Dan Campbell started in every game last year and will be depended upon to provide leadership in the middle. His only goal came in a 4-2 win over Monmouth. Denniston has a slew of reserves returning to the midfield as well. Senior David Currie was a top reserve and spot starter in 2003 finishing with a goal and an assist. Junior Russ Zaccarino started five games and had four assists while sophomores Eric MacDonald and Randy Samaroo should push for playing time as well. Denniston won’t have to look far for a starting goalkeeper in 2004 with sophomore Tomer Chencinski returning to net. Chencinski started 17 games last season and played in all but one contest. He posted a 1.27 goals against average, stopping 77 shots while allowing just 23 goals in 1,630 minutes. Three defensive starters from last fall, plus spring addition Brian Midock, return in front of Chencinski. Bono started every game in 2003 while DelGreco played and started in all but one game. Brown started

16 games and is the Colonials best threat in the air. His only goal last season came against Monmouth and he will push into the box for free kick and corner kick situations. “We open up a tough non-conference schedule with Akron who was ranked in the top-10 last season,” said Denniston. “We then travel to big tournament at George Mason with some of the top teams from the South before beginning our NEC schedule in October.” The non-conference slate opens on the road with a 7:30 p.m. game against Akron before the Colonials travel to the Duquesne Tournament and the George Mason Tournament. Robert Morris starts NEC play host to Central Connecticut on October 8 and follow that up with three more home games against Quinnipiac, non-conference West Virginia, and then St. Francis. The Colonials then play two on the road, two at home, two more back at North Athletic Complex, and two road games before NEC Tournament play opens on November 12. “The key for us this season will be to cut down on our goals against average,” said Denniston. “Last season, we were first in the conference in goals scored but fifth in goals allowed. This year’s Robert Morris squad will have to be stronger defensively than our teams in the past.”

A native of Montreal, Canada, Bunbury owns the RMU singleseason records for goals (23) and points (58), both of which came during the 1986 season. His 14 goals and 35 points the following year rank fourth in the singleseason record book. In the career record book, Bunbury ranks second in goals (40) and points (104). While at Robert Morris University was also a member of the track and field team.

He also worked as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay 18

Fabiano led RMU in scoring in both 1992 and 1993 and was named to the All-NEC Second Team in 1991 and First Team in 1992. Fabiano currently is in his sixth season as head coach of the women’s soccer team at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in his hometown of Kenosha.

About Robert Morris University

Robert Morris University, founded in 1921, is one of the leading universities in the Pittsburgh region and among the largest private institutions of higher learning in Pennsylvania. Nearly 5,000 full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students from 30 states and 20 countries are enrolled at Robert Morris University. The 230-acre campus in Moon Township, located 15 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport and 17 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, is home to more than 2,500 commuter and 1,000 resident students. The Center for Adult and Continuing Education provides classroom and library facilities for approximately 1,500 students and is located in the heart of the "Golden Triangle," the city's metropolitan center and the seventh largest concentration of Fortune 500 corporate headquarters in the United States. The 32-acre Island Sports Center, located on Neville Island, provides state-ofthe-art athletic facilities for the University and the community. Robert Morris University built its reputation by offering strong academic programs in traditional fields like accounting, finance, economics, marketing and management. To prepare students for success in a changing and competitive workforce, the University created programs in actuarial science, communication, 22

information systems, engineering, elementary education, media arts and nursing in the past decade. Students also have the opportunity to gain a global perspective by studying abroad. RMU offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programs, including: the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in actuarial science, applied mathematics, communication, English, media arts and social science; the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in media arts; the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in applied mathematics, business education, economics, elementary education, engineering (logistics and software), hospitality administration, information sciences, information systems management, manufacturing engineering, nursing, social science and tourism administration; and the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) in accounting, economics, finance, finance/economics, health services management, hospitality management, human resource management, logistics management, management, marketing, sport management and tourism management. In addition, educational certification preparation programs are offered for elementary and secondary teachers and information technology specialists. The University’s 14 graduate degree programs include: the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.); the Master of

Science (M.S.) in accounting, business education, communications and information systems, engineering management, finance, information systems management, instructional leadership, internet information systems, nonprofit management, nursing, sport management and taxation; and the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in information systems and communications. RMU is a teaching-centered institution, featuring small classes taught by faculty members, not teaching assistants. The University employs 126 full-time faculty members, 81 percent of whom hold terminal degrees. The student-faculty ratio is 19:1. Learning resources include a library containing more than 125,000 bound volumes, more than 325,000 items on microfilm and nearly 1,000 periodical subscriptions. Nearly 50 clubs and organizations help students to develop leadership skills, network professionally and meet new friends. Student organizations include varsity, club and intramural sports, sororities, fraternities and student government. The 18 varsity athletic programs are affiliated with NCAA Division I. Community service efforts include Habitat for Humanity projects, food drives and holiday parties for needy youngsters. For more information on degree programs, activities and the enrollment process, visit www.rmu.edu.

Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. President, Robert Morris University Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University since 1989, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. Nicholson’s commitment to innovative program development is evident. In addition to strengthening traditional business majors such as accounting, management, finance and marketing, Nicholson has overseen the development of new professionally oriented bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in communications, education, engineering, information systems, media arts and nursing, as well as a doctor of science in information systems and communications. Before coming to Robert Morris University, Nicholson served two years

as executive vice president of academic and student affairs at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and seven years as vice chancellor and dean of the faculty at Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne. Earlier in his career, he was associate dean and director of the M.B.A. program at Wright State University, rising to the position of dean of the College of Business and Administration. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Nicholson graduated from Ohio State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He also earned master’s and doctoral degrees from Ohio State. Nicholson and his wife, Kathie, have four adult children and reside in Upper St. Clair, Pa.

Dr. Susan Hofacre Director of Athletics The 2004-05 academic year marks Susan Hofacre’s fifth year as head of the Robert Morris University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Over the last year-and-a-half, Hofacre has overseen the addition of six new programs to the department, the planning of an on-campus football stadium and athletics administration building and renovations to the recently purchased RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island, Pa. In 2003-04, Hofacre added women’s golf as the University’s 18th intercollegiate athletics program, then hired head coaches for four new sports that join the Division I ranks at Robert Morris in 2004-05, including field hockey, men’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse. By 2005-06, when women’s ice hockey joins men’s ice hockey as a Division I sport, RMU will offer 23 intercollegiate programs, a stark contrast from just 10 years ago, when football was added as the 16th program. The pace has picked up the past year, but Hofacre is no stranger to Robert Morris. 2004 Colonial Men’s Soccer

The department’s senior woman administrator (SWA) since 1989, Hofacre replaced Bruce Corrie, who had served in the position for the previous six years, during the summer of 2000. As senior woman administrator, she assisted the athletic department on NCAA compliance, academic advising, event scheduling and policy development while serving as department head and professor in the sport management program. Prior to Robert Morris, Hofacre spent three years as president of Ace Events Inc. in Sausalito, Calif., marketing and managing local pro-am tennis tournaments. She was special events coordinator for the Houston Sports Association from 1985-86, and also worked in minor league baseball for the Evansville (Ind.) Triplets in 1984. Hofacre has her Ph.D. from California, Riverside and a master of science degree in sports administration from Ohio University. Hofacre earned an M.B.A. from Robert Morris University and an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University

of Wyoming. Born in Aberdeen, S.D., and raised in Walnut Creek, Calif., Hofacre is the first female athletic director the school has had in its 41-year history of competition.
