Robert Morris University

Robert Morris University Athletics Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 30 Northeast Conference championships among its 22 sports, including seven in volleyball, five in football and five in softball. The women’s volleyball team claimed its fifth straight NEC championship as well as its fifth straight berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2003. In the NCAA Tournament, RMU faced off against Big 10 opponents in first round in each of its five appearances, losing to eventual national champion Penn State in 1999, Minnesota in 2000, Ohio State in 2001 and 2002 and Penn State in 2003. Over the course of the last five years, the Colonial women’s volleyball team has posted an overall record of 120-61, including a school record 30 victories in 2001. Even more astounding has been RMU’s record against NEC foes. Over the last five years the Colonials win over 95 percent ahead of the time against league opponents with a 44-2 mark. Also during the 2003-04 athletics campaign, freshman Stephanie Kuhn became the first track and field athlete at Robert Morris to qualify for the NCAA Championships when she placed second in the javelin at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor East Regional with a school-record throw of 151’10”. The football team, meanwhile, finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA MidMajor National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and is slated to move into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in the fall of 2005. Meanwhile, the women’s crew team, under the guidance of head coach Liz Jones, claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA nonscholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first. Robert Morris has sent 12 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball and volleyball have made an NEC record five 2004 Colonial Women’s Soccer

appearances, with the men’s basketball qualifying in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1992 and the volleyball team each of the last five years (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003). The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice (1993 and 1994). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft and spent the 2002 season with the Colorado Rapids of the MLS. Five other former Colonial men’s soccer players have played professionally, as Steve Bell (1997) and Doug Petras (1994) saw action with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, while Rhian Dodds (2003) plays for the Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. Said Ali (2004) and Jamie Dodds (2004), each an All-NEC First Team selection in 2003, signed with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Pro Soccer League and the Toronto Lynx of the A-League, respectively, in 2004. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL coach in Dan Radakovich, who spent 18 years as an NFL assistant and is currently RMU’s assistant head coach. Joining the football coaching staff in the summer of 2003 was John Banaszak, who became the third member of the staff with a background in the NFL. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

RMU DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Robert Morris University provides opportunities for our studentathletes to receive a quality experience both in the classroom and in intercollegiate athletic competition. Athletics enhances the intellectual, social, and personal development of our studentathletes, helping them to grow through their experience at the University and to prepare for meaningful careers and lives. Toward this purpose, the Department of Athletics promotes academic achievement, good sporting and ethical conduct, and equitable opportunity for students and staff, including women and minorities. The guiding principle of the University is to focus on academics first; therefore we view our successes based not on wins and losses but as linked to the educational mission of the University and the welfare of our student-athletes.

John Kowalski Head Coach, Robert Morris University John Kowalski is in his fourth year as head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team, and it is safe to say that Kowalski has come full circle. Within the local, national and international soccer communities, Kowalski has been just about everywhere and done just about everything: indoor team coach and player, college head coach at the NCAA Division I and II levels, U.S. National Team interim head coach, and Major League Soccer and A-League head coach. Still, there was one coaching job Kowalski had not encountered until the 2001 collegiate season - coaching women. With three years under his belt, his goal is as simple as it was when he served as head coach of the Colonial men’s squad from 1989-96: win the Northeast Conference and make a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his second coaching job at Robert Morris, Kowalski was the head coach of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, where he compiled a 26-26-4 record in two seasons as the first head coach in franchise history. In 1999, Kowalski led the Riverhounds to a second-round playoff appearance and the A-League “Franchise of the Year” award. From 1997-98, Kowalski coached the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer, leading the team to the playoffs in 1997. In his first stint as head coach of RMU, Kowalski guided the men’s soccer team from 1989-96, helping the Colonials become the first squad other than men’s basketball to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 1993-94. During his tenure, Robert Morris was ranked as high as No. 16 nationally (1995), and Kowalski earned NEC Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1995. While serving as head coach of the men’s soccer team, Kowalski spent 10 years (1986-96) as head coach of the U.S. National Indoor men’s team, bringing home a second-place medal in the 1992 FIFA World Championships. He also coached the U.S. Under-20 team in 1993-94 and served as interim head coach of the U.S. National Team in 1991. Between 1979-85, Kowalski 4

Kowalski Year-by-Year at RMU After a successful stint as men’s soccer coach at Robert Morris, Kowalski coached in the pro ranks before returning to RMU to serve as the head coach of the women’s team. A look at his accomplishments as a head coach at Robert Morris:

coached in the Major Indoor Soccer League, spending two seasons with the Cincinnati Kids, two with the Hartford Hellions and four years with the Pittsburgh Spirit, compiling a 106-82 record. Kowalski is a 1973 graduate of the University of New Haven, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the men’s soccer team and earned an undergraduate degree in commercial art and advertising. Kowalski began his coaching career in 1973 as an assistant coach at New Haven while playing professionally for the New Britain Falcons of the Connecticut Soccer League. He helped guide New Haven to five NCAA Division II NCAA Tournaments. Kowalski also played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League for both the Kids (1978-79) and the Spirit (1979-80). On September 28th of this year, Kowalski will be inducted into the New England Soccer Hall of Fame, which will be his third such honor. In January of 2002, Kowalski was inducted into the Connecticut Hall of Fame and in October 2002 he was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as head coach of the Colonial men’s soccer team. Kowalski, wife Pat and daughter Kaylene currently reside in Sewickley, Pa.

Assistant Athletic Trainer

After a year away, Amanda Rambo returns to Robert Morris as a coach after a four-year career as a player with the Colonials. Rambo got her start in coaching as an assistant coach at Our Lady of Sacred Heart in the fall of 2003. She has also worked several camps, including the Quick Skills camp. A 2003 Robert Morris graduate, Rambo was a valuable offensive weapon off of the bench for the Colonials. In four years, she tallied five goals and 12 assists for 22 career points. A native of Stratford, N.J., Rambo has a Bachelor of Arts degree in sport management.

Mike Vittorino is in his sixth year at Robert Morris University as the only full-time assistant athletic trainer. He is the primary athletic trainer for the women’s soccer team and the men’s basketball team. 2004 Outlook Robert Morris University The 2004 Robert Morris women’s soccer team has a simple goal – qualify for the Northeast Conference Tournament. Head coach John Kowalski, now in his fourth season at the helm of the women’s program, has kept things simple for the Colonials. After finishing last season 2-16-1 and 0-8-1 in the NEC, Robert Morris will be looking to climb the conference ladder in 2004. With 18 letterwinners returning, including eight starters, Kowalski has a solid core of returning players with college experience. Throw on top of that a talented recruiting class of eight freshmen and the Colonials have the look of a playoff contender in the NEC. Among those 18 returning letterwinners are two seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and 10 freshmen. The two seniors, Nicole Hilderbrand and Megan Milani, will be looked upon to provide leadership for the 18 underclassmen on the roster. Hilderbrand is three-year letterwinner for the Colonials and will be counted upon to

CHRISTINA PILATO

6

anchor the midfield after being a starter in each of the past two seasons. The senior’s only goal last season proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Duquesne. Milani played in four games at forward last season after transferring from Indiana (Pa.) prior to the 2002 season. Her tenacity up front should lead to goal-scoring opportunities for the Colonials. A trio of sophomores – Christina Pilato, Hilary Nellis and Christina Nicholson – played a big role on last year’s team and will be looked upon to improve in their sophomore seasons on the Robert Morris attack. Pilato led the Colonials as a freshman with two goals and team-highs in assists (4) and points (8). She got her career off to a hot start with two assists in the first game of the season against Youngstown State and then scored her first career goal against Bucknell on September 5. Nellis finished second on the team with six points and led the squad with three goals. Nellis, like Pilato, started her career quickly with a goal in the Colonials opening game win against Youngstown State. Nicholson added a goal and an assist while coming off of the bench last season and will look to have an expanded role in 2004. Along with Hilderbrand, Pilato and Nicholson, the Colonials will look for contributions from returnees Danielle Pasquarelli, Jessica DeSantis and Christine Lewis. Pasquarelli scored one goal last season and saw time in every game but one off the bench. DeSantis is a defensive midfielder who will help the backline keep the opposition out of the attacking zone. Lewis came off the bench in eight games last season and should have a bigger role on this year’s team. Freshmen Kathryn Kirkpatrick and Taryn Reichard will also have a chance for playing time in the midfield. In addition to Nellis and Milani up

top, sophomore Stephanie Kuhn will be asked to step up her offensive production in 2004. Kuhn had one goal in 19 games last season, and managed to break into the starting lineup in eight games as a freshman. Junior Rachel Derbis had 12 starts and one goal in 2003 and will again be a threat up top. Freshman Ashley Desjardins is also a candidate for playing time. Defensively, the Colonials have a slew of players returning to the back line. Juniors Heidi Schneider, Krystal Parenteau, Kristin Roth, Leanna Hultquist and Angela Story and sophomore Jenna Gilbert all return after earning letters last season. Story is perhaps the physically strongest player on the team and will anchor the defense in the middle. Gilbert has a dangerous long throw which can open scoring opportunities. Roth and Hultquist are both strong outside backs while Schneider and Parenteau can play inside or out. Freshman Heather Niznik adds depth to an already strong defensive corps. The Colonials will face a problem this year that they haven’t had to face since 2000 – who is going to be the starting goaltender? Shana Berardi rewrote the RMU record books in her four years as the starter in the Colonial net, but her graduation last spring has opened the door for a new keeper. The leading candidate will be junior Karly Grunebach who played in four games last season allowing four goals and making seven saves in 145:00 minutes of playing time. However, a strong freshman class with three netminders – Jessica Onufer, Elizabeth Moss and Irene Petrou – will make for a competitive preseason camp inside the penalty area. All three have the talent to start at the Division I level. While Robert Morris has to answer some questions between the pipes, they bring back a strong core of returnees and have a solid nucleus to climb the Northeast Conference standings in 2004. The 32-acre Island Sports Center, located on Neville Island, provides state-ofthe-art athletic facilities for the University and the community. Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. President, Robert Morris University Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University since 1989, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. Nicholson’s commitment to innovative program development is evident. In addition to strengthening traditional business majors such as accounting, management, finance and marketing, Nicholson has overseen the development of new professionally oriented bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in communications, education, engineering, information systems, media arts and nursing, as well as a doctor of science in information systems and communications. Before coming to Robert Morris University, Nicholson served two years

as executive vice president of academic and student affairs at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and seven years as vice chancellor and dean of the faculty at Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne. Earlier in his career, he was associate dean and director of the M.B.A. program at Wright State University, rising to the position of dean of the College of Business and Administration. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Nicholson graduated from Ohio State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He also earned master’s and doctoral degrees from Ohio State. Nicholson and his wife, Kathie, have four adult children and reside in Upper St. Clair, Pa.

Dr. Susan Hofacre Director of Athletics The 2004-05 academic year marks Susan Hofacre’s fifth year as head of the Robert Morris University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Over the last year-and-a-half, Hofacre has overseen the addition of six new programs to the department, the planning of an on-campus football stadium and athletics administration building and renovations to the recently purchased RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island, Pa. In 2003-04, Hofacre added women’s golf as the University’s 18th intercollegiate athletics program, then hired head coaches for four new sports that join the Division I ranks at Robert Morris in 2004-05, including field hockey, men’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse. By 2005-06, when women’s ice hockey joins men’s ice hockey as a Division I sport, RMU will offer 23 intercollegiate programs, a stark contrast from just 10 years ago, when football was added as the 16th program. The pace has picked up the past year, but Hofacre is no stranger to Robert Morris. 2004 Colonial Women’s Soccer

The department’s senior woman administrator (SWA) since 1989, Hofacre replaced Bruce Corrie, who had served in the position for the previous six years, during the summer of 2000. As senior woman administrator, she assisted the athletic department on NCAA compliance, academic advising, event scheduling and policy development while serving as department head and professor in the sport management program. Prior to Robert Morris, Hofacre spent three years as president of Ace Events Inc. in Sausalito, Calif., marketing and managing local pro-am tennis tournaments. She was special events coordinator for the Houston Sports Association from 1985-86, and also worked in minor league baseball for the Evansville (Ind.) Triplets in 1984. Hofacre has her Ph.D. from California, Riverside and a master of science degree in sports administration from Ohio University. Hofacre earned an M.B.A. from Robert Morris University and an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University

of Wyoming. Born in Aberdeen, S.D., and raised in Walnut Creek, Calif., Hofacre is the first female athletic director the school has had in its 41-year history of competition.
