Robert Morris University

RMU Athletics Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 23 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 25 league tournament titles among 23 sports, including eight regular-season titles in volleyball, five regular-season championships in football, five NEC Tournament titles in softball and three NEC Tournament championships in men’s soccer.   The 2006-07 athletic season could arguably go down as one of the greatest in RMU’s Division I history, as a number of team and individual accomplishments highlight the year. The Colonial women’s basketball team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in Division I history by claiming its third NEC Tournament championship with a 68-66 victory over Sacred Heart. The win garnered the program its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, where the Colonials fell to N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. The turnaround came just three years after finishing with just three wins during the 2003-04 campaign.   The Robert Morris men’s ice hockey team pulled off the biggest upset in school history by garnering a 4-2 victory at Notre Dame, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country. The men’s basketball team, meanwhile, got off to its best start in school history with a 4-0 mark en route to its second straight winning season.   Individually, senior Stephanie Kuhn of the RMU women’s outdoor track and field team qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Kuhn, the only student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in track and field, turned the trick twice in her four years on the team, also accomplishing the feat as a freshman. Off the field, a total of six student-athletes were named to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Teams, while senior Ray Gensler of the football team was named an Academic All-American for the second straight year, the first student-athlete in school history to earn Academic All-America honors twice.   The 2006-07 athletics campaign followed a 2005-06 season in which the men’s soccer team added to its illustrious history by downing No. 1 seed Monmouth, 3-2 in overtime, to claim its third NEC Tournament title and first since 1994. The Robert Morris softball squad, under the guidance of director of athletics Craig Coleman, also captured its fourth regular-season championship, tying Long Island for the top spot with a 17-3 league record.   During the 2004-05 athletics campaign, the Colonial softball squad captured its third NEC regular-season title with a 17-3 league record, then swept through the NEC Tournament for its fifth tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history.   The success RMU athletics has had in recent years followed the seasons before it, as the Colonial football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA MidMajor National Championship according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and moved into its own oncampus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005.   The women’s crew team claimed two straight national

2007 Colonial Men’s Soccer

championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001.   The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first.   Robert Morris has sent 15 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball and volleyball have made an NEC record five appearances, with men’s basketball qualifying in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1992 and volleyball in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005).   Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. He currently is the starting center for the Cleveland Browns.   Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. Five other former Colonial men’s soccer players have played professionally, as Steve Bell (1997) and Doug Petras (1994) saw action with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, while Rhian Dodds (2003) plays for the Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. Said Ali (2004) and Jamie Dodds (2004) signed with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Pro Soccer League and the Toronto Lynx of the A-League, respectively, in 2004. Following Ali and Jamie Dodds in 2005 was Joe Di Buono (2005), who was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL.   Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL coach in Dan Radakovich, who spent 18 years as an NFL assistant and is currently RMU’s assistant head coach. Joining the football coaching staff in the summer of 2003 was John Banaszak, who became the third member of the staff with a background in the NFL. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV.   Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

Bill Denniston Head Coach

When Bill Denniston took over the reins of the men’s soccer program at Robert Morris University in 1997, he took the Colonials from a 3-14-2 mark in his first season to the Northeast Conference regular-season championship in 2001. Now entering his 11th season with Robert Morris, Denniston has anchored his squad at the top of the Northeast Conference.   In 2006, the Colonials bounced back from a 01-2 start to the conference schedule to finish 4-11 over the final six regular-season games and earn the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. Robert Morris dropped their semifinal contest to eventual champion Monmouth, but its climb into the playoffs in the waning weeks of the regular season set the tone for 2007.   The 2005 Colonials claimed their third NEC Championship and second under the guidance of Denniston. That team finished 11-8-4, the most wins for the program during the Denniston era. In 2001, Denniston earned NEC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Colonials to their first NEC regular-season championship since 1996. He followed that up by taking RMU to the NEC tournament once again in 2002.   In addition to returning the Colonials to prominence in the NEC, Denniston has helped his players move on to the professional ranks. Under his tutelage, seven players have made

their way into the professional ranks, including 2005 graduate Joe Di Buono, who was drafted by both the Montreal Impact of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL.   In 10 years as head coach of the Colonials, Denniston has compiled an overall record of 71-100-23.   Prior to his stint with Robert Morris, Denniston

served three years as the head coach for Alderson Broaddus (W. Va.) College, guiding the Battlers to a record of 37-17-4 and national rankings in each of his three years. His 1995 squad finished with a national ranking of No. 11, the first year the school participated in Division II athletics, and for those efforts he was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. While with Alderson Broaddus, Denniston also served as assistant athletic director.   Before becoming head coach of the Battlers, Denniston spent four seasons as assistant men’s soccer coach at Bethany (W.Va.) College. In each of his four years there, Bethany finished with a national ranking of No. 14 or higher in Division III, including a No. 2 ranking in 1993. In his 18 years as an assistant and head coach, Denniston has helped develop 51 all-conference selections, five Academic All-Americans, four conference MVPs and four All-Americans.   A 1983 graduate of Bethany with a degree in physical education, Denniston was a four-year AllPresidents’ Athletic Conference selection and a three-time All-American. He was also named the PAC’s most valuable player in 1980, was captain of the 1982 Bison squad that was a national finalist and was a Senior Bowl nominee in 1982.   A father of three, Denniston and his wife, Kathy, reside in Moon Township, Pa.

Denniston Year-by-Year Bill Denniston has returned the Colonials to prominence in the NEC. Since 2001, Robert Morris has missed the playoffs just once while earning two regular-season titles. Year School

David Currie

Stacy Ogden Athletic Trainer

Assistant Coach

David Currie is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Colonials. A player under head coach Bill Denniston at Robert Morris, Currie possesses a solid knowledge of the game and has worked closely with Denniston over the course of the past three seasons as both a player and a coach.   Currie played in 17 games as a junior in 2003, scoring a goal and an assist from his spot in the midfield. His first career goal came in a 3-2 win at Pittsburgh. He also had an assist in a win over Monmouth.

2007 Colonial Men’s Soccer

Stacy Ogden enters her first season as a member of the Robert Morris University athletic training staff. A graduate assistant, Ogden will work with the Colonials men’s soccer team as well as indoor track and field and women’s lacrosse.   Ogden joins the Colonial Athletic Department after graduating from Clarion University in 2007. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in liberal studies as well as an Associates of Science degree in allied health. Ogden also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training from California University of Pennsylvania through a distance learning program.   While at Clarion, Ogden worked as a student athletic trainer, providing comprehensive health care to members of the Golden Eagles’ women’s basketball, women’s soccer, football and men’s and women’s track and field squads. She also provided assistance to student-athletes at Clarion Area High School.   An accomplished swimmer, Ogden was an All-American swimmer at Clarion in the 200-freestyle relay. She was a team captain as a senior while qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007.   Ogden was an active member of the campus community. She served as treasurer for the Student Athletic Training Association, was a member of the Student Senate on the appropriations and student relations committee, was part of the medical staff for the Special Olympics and was a member of the Kappa Omicron Nu honors society.   She holds membership in the Eastern Athletic Training Association, the National Athletic Training Association and the Pennsylvania Athletic Training Association. Ogden also has First Aid, CPR, AED (automated external defibrillator) and lifeguard certification through the American Red Cross. 5

2007 Outlook The 2007 Robert Morris University men’s soccer team is looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons after recovering from a slow start in 2006.   Northeast Conference Tournament champions in 2005, the Colonials got off to a slow start in league play in 2006. After going 0-1-2 in their first three NEC contests, the Colonials bid for the conference playoffs looked to be in jeopardy. However, a 2-1 home win over Long Island spurred a 4-1-1 record in their final six conference games and a fourseed in the playoffs. A loss to top seed and eventual champion Monmouth ended the RMU season, but the momentum for 2007 had been captured.   Head coach Bill Denniston, in his 11th season at the helm of the Robert Morris program, returns six starters from last year’s squad that went undefeated, 7-0-2, at home. With the team’s top four scorers returning, the obvious personnel need appears to be on the defensive end. Gone are outside backs Mark Klabnik, Randy Samaroo and sweeper Allan Brown along with midfielder Jason Pelletier and forward Matt Paradise.   Offensively, the Colonials can score goals in a variety of ways. Senior forward Jacek Przednowek’s constant movement off the ball

and accuracy make him a threat on throughballs and longballs and senior forward Connor Curran-Hays uses his 6-4 frame and athleticism to score on crosses and set pieces. In the midfield, senior Ryan Zabinski, a two-time All-NEC First-Team selection and NCSCAA / adidas ® Mid-Atlantic All-Region pick, can break defenders down and beat them off the dribble to create chances for himself and others. Senior Dwayne Chin has the quickness and vision on the opposite side of the midfield to do the same.   Przednowek led the team in scoring for the second straight season with 22 points on nine goals and four assists last year. Zabinksi topped the squad with eight assists and added four goals while Curran-Hays chipped in with four goals and two assists. Chin had nine points with a balanced ledger of three goals and three assists. Junior John Morihlatko can add to the offensive punch with instant energy off the bench.   While Zabinski and Chin are solid options on the outside of the midfield, the central midfield is open to competition. Sophomore Sean Riley will return to his starting role after picking up three assists in his rookie campaign. Filling the void left by Pelletier will be a key ingredient to the Colonial attack. Sophomore Kyle McIvor likely has the inside

track on the position, but a slew of newcomers will compete for the starting slot as well.   Defensively, three starters are missing on the backline with only sophomore outside back DJ Thomas coming back. Fifth-year senior Eric MacDonald will likely fill in the other marking back position, but the two central back positions remain vacant.   Junior goaltender Matt Felice will anchor the defense. A potential All-NEC selection, Felice has solidified his place as one of the top keepers in RMU history. He already ranks third all-time in saves (193) and save percentage (.791) and is fourth in matches played (36) and goals against average (1.36). Last season, he posted five shutouts and a 9-7-4 record while making 107 saves. He finished the year with a 1.38 goals against average and a .787 save percentage.   Traditional non-conference city rivals Duquesne and Pittsburgh face a tough task when they visit North Athletic Complex where RMU did not lose at all in 2006. West Virginia Wesleyan rounds out the home slate while the Colonials travel to Canisius and Niagara and take part in tournaments at the University of Pittsburgh and Wofford College before moving into conference play.

President of Robert Morris University

Director of Athletics

Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005.   “I have followed the success of Robert Morris University from afar, but now I look forward to leading this excellent university,” said Dell’Omo upon his appointment by the Board of Trustees. “Robert Morris has a strong foundation and rich heritage. Now, it is my job to lead in a way that builds upon this history. I am thrilled to have this opportunity.”   “Dr. Dell’Omo is the right person to continue the growth and academic excellence Robert Morris University has experienced during the last 16 years,” said Joseph W. Nocito, chairman of RMU’s Board of Trustees. “He is a proven leader in academia. His background in fund raising, academics and university image building will be used to further strengthen Robert Morris University.”   Dell’Omo came to RMU after 14 years at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he most recently served as vice president for external affairs from 2002 to 2005. In that capacity, he was responsible for government and community relations, university communications and the development of joint academic programs in China. Under his leadership, Saint Joseph’s was awarded $22 million in federal and state appropriations and contracts and greatly expanded its affiliate programs in China. Additionally, Dell’Omo was instrumental in directing Saint Joseph’s ongoing efforts to enhance its academic profile via a more integrated marketing communications program.   Dell’Omo served as Saint Joseph’s associate vice president for academic affairs from 2000 to 2002, directing all academic research centers and institutes, international programs and sponsored research services. He was dean of the University’s Erivan K. Haub School of Business from 1996 to 2000, guiding the school and the accounting department to accreditation by AACSB, The International Association for Management Education, and overseeing the opening of a state-of-the-art $30 million business school building. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 1991 as an assistant professor of management, moving up the faculty ranks to department chair of management and information systems (1993-1994), associate professor of management (19942000) and professor of management (2000-2005). Before joining SJU, he served on the faculty at Canisius College and the Cornell University Extension Program.   Prior to beginning his career in academia, Dell’Omo spent six years working in human resources in the New York City retail industry and four years conducting research on various employment issues such as labor law, collective bargaining, arbitration and discrimination.   Dell’Omo earned a Ph.D. in industrial relations/human resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Montclair State University. He also holds a certificate from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management.   He has contributed to numerous academic journals and publications and lectured at many conferences throughout the world. Dell’Omo has remained an active consultant to universities throughout the nation, primarily on academic and management issues.   Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly, have three children: Lara, an interior designer in San Francisco; Nicholas, a junior at the University of Pittsburgh; and Vincent, a senior in high school.

Robert Morris University stayed in house to hire its latest director of athletics, naming Craig Coleman, M.D., to the position Feb. 15, 2005. Coleman, a native of Philadelphia who coaches RMU’s softball team, began his new responsibilities May 1, 2005, and enters his third academic year in 2007-08. He replaced the late Susan K. Hofacre, Ph.D, who passed away in January 2005.   Under Coleman’s watch, the Department of Athletics has continued to expand and gain national attention. During the 2005-06 academic year, Robert Morris placed a total of nine studentathletes covering six sports on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District II teams, the most in school history. He has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris athletics logo and mascot as well as the launching of the new official website for Colonial athletics at www. rmucolonials.com. Coleman also hired Mike Rice as the seventh basketball coach in RMU Division I history and the addition of field hockey head coach Olivia Netzler.   All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 17 years. During that period, RMU has won three Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a league record of 17-3 to claim the regular-season championship, then swept through the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and advance to its first NCAA Tournament.   “As the longest-tenured coach at Robert Morris University, Craig has proven with his softball teams what it means to have a consistent and successful program both on the field and in the classroom,” said former Robert Morris University President Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. “His successful record will be an asset as he takes over as our new athletic director.”   Likewise, Coleman believes the timing was perfect for him to lead the athletic program at Robert Morris University.   “The time was right for me to make this professional change,” Coleman said at the time of his hiring. “I have always had a passion for athletics and for 15 years I held management positions in health care. As the athletic director, I can now merge these two positions into one that really excites me.”   From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School Medicine. From 1983 to 1989, he was the attending psychiatrist at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh.   Coleman earned his medical degree from the The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.   At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted a record of 19-45 in the previous three seasons. During his 17 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 408-368-4 (.526), including a record of 171-69-1 (.712) in conference play. In 2007, he garnered his 400th career victory in game one of a doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. He guided the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships in his first four years, and in 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).   Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom. His players include nine District II Academic All-Americans, two NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes for softball (Stephani Ehrenfeld in 2000 and Nicole Aloi in 2001) and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. During the 1999-2000 academic year, RMU achieved the second-highest cumulative team grade point average among all NCAA Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.409 grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571).   Prior to his appointment as head coach at Robert Morris, Coleman compiled a record of 359-158 (.694) in 16 seasons coaching summer softball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Patriots 18-and-under traveling fast-pitch team from 1986-91. He guided the Patriots of the Amateur Softball Association to three national tournaments in his final four years at the helm.
