Robert Morris (0-1) @ #24 Liberty (0-1) Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Williams Stadium (19,200) - Lynchburg, Va. Radio: WPIT-AM 730 (Chris Shovlin - play-by-play & Jim Duzyk - color) Audio on the internet (live and archived) at: www.rmucolonials.com Top Story - The Robert Morris University football team opens a three-game road trip Saturday afternoon by traveling to Lynchburg, Va., for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against No. 24 Liberty at Williams Stadium. The Colonials are coming off a 19-13 setback to Dayton (9/3) at Joe Walton Stadium in their 2011 season opener, which dropped RMU to 9-9 (.500) all-time to open the season. Senior tight end Shadrae King led the Robert Morris receiving corps with five catches for 35 yards against the Flyers, extending his streak of consecutive games with at least one reception to 20 dating back to the 2009 campaign, the second longest streak in school history. Junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair finished 12-for-28 passing for 154 yards and also rushed for a fiveyard touchdown but was sacked eight times on the afternoon. Robert Morris continues its three-game road swing after taking on the Flames by closing out the non-conference portion of its 2011 schedule with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against Morgan State Saturday, Sept. 17, at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore, Md. Quick Stat of the Afternoon - A Robert Morris defense that featured eight new starters got off to a solid start in its 2011 season opener against Dayton (9/3), holding the Flyers to just 21 yards rushing on 26 attempts, an average of 0.8 yards per carry. Overall Dayton finished with just 233 yards of total offense as a total of 23 of RMU’s 56 tackles on the afternoon against the Flyers came from Colonials making their first collegiate start. Included in that group were sophomore safety D.J. Myers, who produced a game-high nine tackles, while junior linebacker Kyle Cooper contributed seven takedowns. Junior defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof, RMU’s active leader in career tackles with 81, finished with four tackles, including one and-a-half takedowns for a loss, and a fumble recovery against the Flyers. Saturday’s Opponent - Robert Morris and Liberty will meet for just the second time on the football field Saturday, with the Colonials having earned a 30-23 victory over the Flames in the inaugural meeting between the two programs last season at Joe Walton Stadium (9/18/10). In that contest former running back Myles Russ (2007-10) scored on a 12-yard run with 22 seconds to play to help lift RMU to the victory. Quarterback Jeff Sinclair finished 13-for-21 passing for a career-high 271 yards and two touchdowns and completed all four of his pass attempts for 68 yards during the game-winning drive. For more information on the all-time series against Liberty, including last year’s game recap, please see page four of today’s game notes. On This Date (Sept. 10) in Robert Morris Football History - Just a week after playing the first game in program history, Robert Morris played its first home game at Moon Stadium by posting a 26-19 victory over Monmouth Sept. 10, 1994. Just as defense helped the Colonials secure a 2419 win @ Waynesburg (9/3/94) a week prior, the unit came up big again in the victory over the Hawks. Monmouth had drove to the RMU two-yard line, but the Hawks were turned away from securing a game-tying touchdown as time ran out. The Colonials had taken the final lead of the afternoon with 4:31 to play when former quarterback Jake Newman (1994-97) hit inaugural running back Tim Hall (1994-95) with a short pass, with Hall bursting 70 yards for the eventual game-winning touchdown. Newman finished 22-for-29 passing on the afternoon for 298 yards and three touchdowns, with Hall catching seven of those passes for 114 yards and a score despite being held to 32 yards rushing on the afternoon.

2011 Robert Morris Football Game Notes @ Liberty (9/10/11) - Page 3
Head Coach Joe Walton 18th Season - Pittsburgh ’57 At the forefront of the football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 18-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region. The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing everything from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’s inaugural season in 1994. Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football program, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship. “It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the perfect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.” Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-season titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998, 2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and 1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eightgame winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s first bid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victory in the collegiate ranks.

Last RMU Game vs. Liberty Game #3 Robert Morris 30, #14/15 Liberty 23 September 18, 2010 / Moon Township, Pa. Joe Walton Stadium (Attendance: 2,893) - A 12-yard touchdown run by running back Myles Russ with just 22 seconds to play helped lift Robert Morris to an upset of No. 14/15 Liberty, 30-23. A 29-yard field goal by Liberty’s Matt Bevins with 1:19 remaining in regulation tied the game, 23-23, but RMU used a six-play, 80-yard drive that lasted just 57 seconds for the decisive touchdown. Quarterback Jeff Sinclair finished 4-for-5 passing during the game-winning drive, hitting tight end Shadrae King three times and hooking up with wide receiver T.J. Green for a crucial 32yard completion that moved the ball to the 12-yard line of the Flames. Two plays later Russ found a wide open hole up the middle and scored easily to help propel Robert Morris to the win. Russ scored three touchdowns on the afternoon, finding the end zone on just the third play of the game when he hauled in a pass from Sinclair, broke a tackle and raced 67 yards to the end zone for the touchdown reception and an early 7-0 Colonial lead. The Flames answered on their next possession, marching 60 yards on nine plays before Mike Brown hit Chris Summers for a 24-yard touchdown pass to tie it, 7-7. The score remained tied until late in the second quarter, when Sinclair found wide receiver Jamie Cobb for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 1:31 left before halftime to push RMU back in front, 14-7. Liberty trimmed its deficit to four at the break, 14-10, when Bevins connected for a 33-yard field goal with just six ticks left on the clock in the second quarter. The Flames opened the second half with a nine-play, 54-yard drive that was capped by a 28yard field goal from Bevins to help trim Liberty's deficit to one, 14-13. RMU’s next drive stalled, but punter Nick Schirtzinger pinned the Flames at their own two-yard line thanks to a 51-yard punt. The Robert Morris defense stiffened, holding Liberty to just one rushing yard, and on 3rdand-10 from their own two-yard line, SirChauncey Holloway was flagged for a holding call with Brown in the end zone. The play resulted in a safety for the Colonials and a 16-13 advantage at the 6:07 mark of the third quarter. Liberty took its first lead of the contest, 20-16, with 13:01 to play when Ervin Garner hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Brown, but the Colonials answered on their next possession to grab the lead right back, 23-20, when Russ scored from four yards out to cap a six-play, 78yard drive with 10:20 to play. Robert Morris iced the win when safety Michael Landers intercepted Brown in the end zone on the final play of the game. Score By Quarters Liberty Robert Morris

Dayton Game Notes - The Colonials dipped to 9-9 (.500) all-time in season openers with the setback, including 6-2 (.750) in season openers at home ... Both of RMU's losses in season-opening home games have come to the Flyers ... Dayton owns a 12-2 (.857) edge in the all-time series and has won nine straight over Robert Morris ... RMU dropped its third straight season opener, with its last season-opening victory coming in a 27-13 victory over Morehead State (9/6/08) at Joe Walton Stadium ... Robert Morris finished with 235 yards of total offense compared to 233 for Dayton ... Robert Morris suffered 10 penalties for 65 yards ... Freshman punter Tony LaMancusa averaged an even 40 yards on five punts in his collegiate debut, including a long of 48. At The Drive In - While Robert Morris held Dayton to just 233 yards of total offense in its 2011 season opener at Joe Walton Stadium, including a paltry 21 yards rushing on 26 attempts (0.8 yards per carry), the Colonials did a solid job on the afternoon not allowing the Flyers to put together a sustained drive. Each of the four times that Dayton scored on the afternoon were drives that lasted less than 50 yards. The two touchdown drives Dayton put together were 43 and 45 yards, respectively, while the two drives that ended in field goals were 47 and 10 yards, respectively. The difference in game, in fact, could be based on that the Flyers scored 10 points off of Robert Morris turnovers, while the Colonials failed to score on Dayton’s only fumble of the contest. Fresh Faces - The freshman duo of Duane Mitchell and Justin Brooks put forth a solid effort at halfback in RMU’s 2011 season opener against Dayton, combining to rush for 119 yards on 23 carries, an average of 5.17 yards per rush. Mitchell finished the afternoon with 71 yards rushing on 14 attempts, while Brooks added nine carries for 48 yards, including a 26-yard scamper. Mitchell is just the second true freshman in school history to start a season opener at halfback, joining former Colonial Brian Harden in 2006. In addition, Mitchell and Brooks are the first pair of true freshmen in school history to start the season as the top two options at halfback. Experience Counts - Freshmen Duane Mitchell and Justin Brooks will each have a veteran offensive line to work with in 2011, which could help aid in the development of the duo. Despite sophomore Jon Hill earning his first career start at right tackle in the 2011 season opener against Dayton (9/3), the other four members of the offensive line have combined for 63 career starting assignments. The leader of the group is senior right guard Brad Rodgers, who owns 23 career starts on the line, including 21 straight. Seniors Brian Bevilacqua (LG) and Logan Miles (C) own 17 and 16 career starts, respectively, while sophomore A.J. Dalton (LT) has been in the starting lineup seven times. Dr. Dre - Senior tight end Shadrae King paced the Robert Morris receiving corps in its 2011 season opener with five catches for 35 yards. The performance marked the 20th straight game dating back to the 2009 campaign that King has recorded at least one reception, a school record by a tight end. Former Colonial Brent Hockenberry (200001) finished with at least one catch in 17 straight games over the course of the 2000 and 2001 seasons. One of seven players in school history to record at least one catch in 15 straight games, King is two games shy of the overall record. Former wide receiver Opio Gary (1998-2000) closed out his Robert Morris career by posting at least one reception in each of his final 22 games. Many Happy Returns - Senior Anthony Coleman has been a rock for Robert Morris on special teams throughout his career, as the wide receiver enters Saturday’s game @ Liberty owning Robert Morris career records for kickoff returns (72) and kickoff return yards (1,527). Thanks to his consistency on special teams, Coleman owns 2,356 career all-purpose yards, which ranks 10th all-time at Robert Morris. He finished with 91 allpurpose yards in the 2011 season opener against Dayton (9/3) and has a chance to become just the sixth player in school history to eclipse 3,000 career all-purpose yards in his final season of eligibility. Start Me Up - Seniors Anthony Coleman and Brad Rodgers each enter Saturday’s game @ Liberty as RMU’s active leader in career starting assignments with 23. Coleman has started 23 straight at wide receiver, the longest active streak for consecutive starts, while Rodgers owns 21 straight starts on the offensive line and 23 overall.

Thanks to a 42-24 win over Central Connecticut State (11/6/10) that clinched a share of the 2010 Northeast Conference championship, RMU stretched its winning streak at “The Joe” to eight games, the longest winning streak at the facility since opening the stadium in 2005. Despite a 19-13 setback to Dayton (9/3) in the 2011 season opener that snapped the eight-game surge, overall Robert Morris owns a record of 17-15 (.531) in seven seasons at Joe Walton Stadium.

The Comeback Kids - As long as quarterback Jeff Sinclair and tight end Shadrae King are on the Robert Morris roster, anything is possible. Last season, Robert Morris trailed three times @ Sacred Heart (9/11/10) in its 2010 Northeast Conference opener before pulling out a victory when Sinclair connected with King for an eight-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds to play. Included in RMU’s comeback against the Pioneers were a pair of double-digit deficits. The Colonials trailed, 14-0, in the second quarter before rallying to tie the game at halftime, 14-14. In the third quarter the Pioneers pushed their advantage back to double digits, 24-14, but a pair of touchdowns early in the fourth quarter gave Robert Morris its first lead of the 2010 season, 28-24. RMU’s win over Sacred Heart marked the fifth time in the 18-year history of the program the Colonials have climbed out of a two-touchdown deficit for a victory, the largest in school history. Surprisingly, four of those five instances have come on the road. Cool, Calm, Collected - If anything, quarterback Jeff Sinclair has proven that he has ice in his veins when Robert Morris is looking for big plays late in games. In addition to engineering a game-winning scoring drive in a 35-31 victory @ Sacred Heart (9/11/10) last season, the signal caller did it again a week later in the fourth quarter of a 30-23 upset win over No. 14/15 Liberty (9/18/10) at Joe Walton Stadium. Sinclair marched the Colonials 80 yards on six plays, which was capped by a 12-yard touchdown run by former running back Myles Russ (2007-10) with just 22 seconds to play. Sinclair finished 4-for-4 passing for 68 yards in the game-winning drive and is just the second RMU quarterback in school history to engineer back-to-back game-winning drives in the fourth quarter. He joins all-time leading passer Tim Levcik (1998-01). Levcik turned the trick in victories @ Wagner (10/28/00) and @ Sacred Heart (11/4/00) during RMU’s undefeated season in 2000. King Me - Tight end Shadrae King has developed into quarterback Jeff Sinclair’s favorite target, and that was certainly the case in RMU’s 35-31 victory @ Sacred Heart (9/11/10). King finished with eight catches for career high totals in both receiving yards (133) and touchdowns catches (3) against the Pioneers, including the game-winning touchdown with just 17 seconds to play. King is the fifth player in school history, and first tight end, to catch three touchdown passes in a game and the first since alltime leading receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05) established a single-game school record with four touchdown catches against Stony Brook (10/29/05).

Those Issues Are Secondary - A key area that Robert Morris was hurt by graduation from 2010 is the secondary. The four starters during RMU’s championship run in 2010 were all seniors and concluded their careers with combined totals of 575 tackles and 27 interceptions. Each of RMU’s four starters in its 2011 season opener against Dayton (9/3) made their first career collegiate start and featured a senior (Alex Tarr), a junior (Ben Ridgeley), a junior college transfer (Antwan Smith) and a sophomore (D.J. Myers). While Myers led the Colonials in tackles against the Flyers with a career-high nine takedowns, the quartet enters Saturday’s game @ Liberty with combined career totals of 35 tackles and three interceptions. Preseason Honors - A total of five Colonials earned spots on the 2011 All-Northeast Conference Preseason Team. Junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair, senior center Logan Miles and senior tight end Shadrae King were placed on offense, junior defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof earned a spot on defense and senior Anthony Coleman was picked as the return specialist on special teams. In addition, King was named to the 2011 Preseason Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America Second Team by both The Sports Network and Phil Steele and the 2011 Preseason FCS Honorable Mention Team by Consensus Draft Services. Mitchell On The Move - Did any student-athlete have a better year in 2010-11 than Steve Mitchell? In the fall of 2010, Mitchell started all 11 games on the defensive line, recording 37 tackles in helping Robert Morris claim its sixth NEC regular-season championship and the league’s inaugural bid to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs. In the spring of 2011 he ignited the RMU outdoor track & field squad to a second-place finish at the 2011 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 133 points, the squad’s highest finish since winning the 2000 NEC Outdoor Track & Field title with 146.5 points. Mitchell was named the 2011 Most Outstanding Field Performer after claiming gold in the hammer throw and silver in the shot put. He posted a toss of 50.83 meters in the hammer and a throw of 16.29 meters in the shot, establishing a new RMU outdoor school record. To top it off, Mitchell owns a 3.55 cumulative grade point average as a management major. The Streak Continued - The football program helped Robert Morris extend one of its most impressive streaks in school history in the fall of 2010. The Colonials returned to the top of the Northeast Conference after a 10-year hiatus with a record of 7-1 (.875) in league play and shared the 2010 regular-season championship with Central Connecticut State. However, by virtue of a 42-24 victory over the Blue Devils at Joe Walton Stadium (11/6/10), RMU clinched the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs. It marked the 12th straight season that Robert Morris has sent at least one of its programs to an NCAA Tournament, dating back to the 1999-2000 campaign. 2011 Robert Morris Football Game Notes @ Liberty (9/10/11) - Page 9 Rank and File - Robert Morris certainly posted a defining victory when it garnered a 30-23 upset win over No. 14/15 Liberty (9/18) at Joe Walton Stadium, but should it really come as a surprise? The victory improved the Colonials to a perfect 2-0 when squaring off with a ranked opponent. RMU defeated fellow Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut State, 23-17, in a pair of overtimes at Joe Walton Stadium Oct. 14, 2006, for its first win over a ranked opponent. The Blue Devils entered that game ranked No. 19 by The Sports Network, while the Flames occupied the No. 15 spot in TSN’s poll before falling to the Colonials. RMU’s loss @ North Dakota State (11/27) in the first round of the 2010 NCAA FCS Playoffs dropped RMU to 2-1 (.667) all-time when facing off with a ranked opponent, as the Bison entered the game ranked 25th by The Sports Network. To see the latest FCS national rankings by The Sports Network, please see page 7 of today’s game notes. When Robert Morris is leading at halftime, the program owns an all-time record of 84-10 (.894). When trailing at the break, Robert Morris owns a mark of 10-54-1 (.162). Even going into halftime tied is beneficial, as the Colonials own an overall record of 10-7 (.588) in such games. The Magic Mark - Since the Colonials began play in 1994 there have been 69 games in which Robert Morris has scored 30 or more points. In those contests RMU boasts a record of 65-4 (.942), including a record of 38-4 (.905) in games in which the team scores between 30 and 39 points. In games in which the Colonials score 40 or more points, RMU is a perfect 27-0. RMU Football Historical Tidbits - The inaugural running back at Robert Morris, the late Tim Hall (1994-95), rushed for 2,908 yards in his two seasons as a Colonial. Hall still owns the FCS season and career records for yards per carry, with his season record of 8.7 yards per carry set in 1994 and his twoyear career record of 7.4 established in 1994 and 1995 ... Hall also ranks fourth all-time in the FCS in all-purpose yards per game (194.8) ... Former Colonial linebacker James Noel (2002-05) ranks fifth in the FCS record book for career tackles per game (10.7), while his career tackle total of 437 takedowns ranks 12th all-time ... Former linebacker Alex DiMichele (2007-10) averaged 10.3 tackles per game over his three years in a Robert Morris uniform, which is tied for eighth all-time in the FCS record book with former Saint Francis linebacker Matthew Parker, who played from 2007 to 2010. Run, Forrest, Run - Robert Morris was absolutely spectacular in 2010 in stopping the run, as the Colonials led the Northeast Conference in rushing defense, allowing an average of just 113.82 yards per game. That total was good enough to rank 18th in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). RMU was especially stingy against league foes, as in eight games the Colonials allowed just 684 yards rushing, an average of 85.5 yards per contest that topped the NEC. The school record for fewest rushing yards allowed per game was set by the 2006 Robert Morris defense, which allowed an average of just 99.8 yards per contest.

A Colonial in the NFL Hank Fraley, who played on the offensive line for Robert Morris from 19961999, has carved a niche for himself in the National Football League (NFL). Signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to a free agent contract in April 2000, Fraley was claimed off waivers the following August by the Philadelphia Eagles. After an ankle injury to Bubba Miller in the final 2001 preseason game, Fraley stepped up and started at center for Philadelphia the entire season, helping the team to the 2002 NFC Championship game. For four straight seasons with Fraley starting at center from 2002-05, the Eagles appeared in the NFC Championship game. In 2005, Fraley became the first RMU football alum to appear in the Super Bowl when he started at center against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. Prior to the start of the 2006 campaign, Fraley was traded by Philadelphia to Cleveland, where he started all 16 games for the Browns on the year. Fraley played four seasons with the Browns from 2006 to 2009, earning 52 starts in 63 games, before signing as a free agent with the St. Louis Rams March 14, 2010. Entering the 2011 season, which will be his 12th year in the NFL, Fraley has started 123 of his career 142 games and has also earned 10 starts in the postseason. Primarily a center, Fraley has also started at both guard and tackle throughout his NFL career. Fraley became the second Colonial to have his number retired, joining inaugural running back Tim Hall (1994-95), as Fraley’s No. 75 was enshrined prior to RMU’s game against Sacred Heart on Sept. 22, 2001. Fraley became the sixth football inductee into the Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame when he was enshrined Oct. 14, 2006.
