AGAINST THE PURPLE EAGLES Robert Morris kicks off the home portion of its schedule with a contest against perennial conference rival Niagara. Dating back to when the two teams were members of the CHA, the Colonials have faced Niagara 47 times. The first meeting between the two teams this season will be the 48th clash with the Purple Eagles. The Colonials have won 12 of the previous meetings while the two teams have tied on eight other occasions. The last time that the two teams met, Robert Morris pulled out a 6-5 overtime victory at 84 Lumber Arena after a power-play goal from Colin South won the game in the extra period.

SCOUTING NIAGARA The Purple Eagles ended the 2012-13 season with a first-round exit in the NCAA West Regional after suffering a 2-1 loss against North Dakota. Niagara finished the season with a record of 23-10-5 and a record of 20-5-2 against AHA opponents. This season, Niagara was selected to finish atop the conference in a poll of the association’s head coaches. After dropping their first two games of the season against Clarkson in non-conference action, the Purple Eagles earned their first victory of the season against Canisius last week with a 6-4 win. Mike Conderman leads the squad with two goals in three games while he is also one of five Purple Eagles to have multiple points in the young season. Adrian Ignagni and Jackson Teichroeb have both seen action in goal for Niagara with Ignagni earning the club’s only victory while sporting a 1.22 goals-against average and a save percentage of .957.

Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator.

He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

CAPTAIN COLIN FEASTS ON THE PURPLE EAGLES Including his game-winning goal in overtime against Niagara last season, Colin South has found the back of the net four times in ten games against the Purple Eagles. South has also recorded two assists to total six points in the ten contests facing Niagara.

STANDING TALL ON “D” With three underclassmen goaltenders, the defense of Robert Morris will be counted on to stand tall and take pressure off of the trio. In the two games so far this season, the Colonials have blocked more shots than their opponents. RMU has averaged 12.50 blocked shots per game and has been led by senior Evan Renwick who currently ranks in the top-15 nationally in blocked shots.

THE OPENING ACT Robert Morris’ goaltending in the first period has been strong to say the least. The tandem of Dalton Izyk and Terry Shafer have allowed just one goal in the opening frame while combining to make 24 saves for a goals-against average of 1.51 and a .960 save percentage.

SHORT-HANDED MARKERS When the Colonials find the back of the net while shorthanded, it usually leads to a win. Robert Morris has won 22 of the 34 games in which they have scored a short-handed goal, but that wasn’t the case in the opening game of the 2013-14 season. Despite Cody Wydo netting a short-handed tally, RMU would fall to Lake Superior State, becoming the ninth time that the Colonials would lose when scoring while on the penalty kill.

QUICK ON THE DRAW Despite a team faceoff percentage under .500, Robert Morris has four skater that rank in the top-50 nationally in faceoff percentage. Sophomores David Friedmann, Brandon Denham, and Greg Gibson join freshman Ben Robillard to form the quartet. Friedmann leads the group winning 73.3 percent of the draws he takes.

PRESEASON AHA POLLS In the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Robert Morris was selected to finish seventh in the conference. The Colonials were behind each of their opponents from the western pod; Niagara, Mercyhurst, Air Force, Canisius, and RIT. RMU was also selected behind eastern pod favorite Connecticut, the team that knocked the Colonials out of the AHA Quarterfinals last season. In the inaugural AHA Meadi Poll, Robert Morris was selected to finish in a tie for seventh with Holy Cross.

55 WINS AND COUNTING This season’s senior class needs just 11 wins to set a new program record for victories by a class. The graduating class of 2012 holds the current record with 65 victories. This season’s group of seniors currently has 55 wins, a number which is the second-most by any graduating class.

100-GAME PLATEAU Just one Colonial enters the 2013-14 season with at least 100 games played. Senior captain Colin South has skated in 102 games during his first three seasons at Robert Morris. As many as five other Colonials could join South at the 100-game milestone by the season’s end.

MUSKET SHOTS WORKMAN, NICHOLSON ELEVATED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Prior to the 2013-14 season, head coach Derek Schooley elevated his two assistants, Matt Nicholson and Mark Workman, to the status of associate head coach. Workman served as a top assistant at Brown for six seasons before coming to Robert Morris while Nicholson joined the Colonials after time at Adrian College. Both coaches are entering their fifth seasons as members of the Colonial hockey family.

SCHOLAR ATHLETES Three Colonials from the 2012-13 team were named Student-Athletes of the Year by the AHA. Two of them, Brandon Denham and Zac Lynch, are still with the squad for this season. In order to receive the award, the student-athlete must maintain at least a 4.0 GPA during the season.

THE NEWEST CAPTAIN Heading into the program’s tenth season, head coach Derek Schooley turned to senior forward Colin South as the team’s newest captain. South served as an assistant captain during his junior season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

COLONIALS IN THE PROS As training camps through all levels of hockey kicked off in late September, two members of the Colonial hockey family received invitations to the main NHL camps. Eric Levine got the call to join the Nashville Predators camp while Denny Urban headed to join the Florida Panthers. Urban became just the second Colonial in program history to see playing time while in camp when he dressed for the Panthers in an exhibition against Nashville.

GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK

SCORING DRIVE The Colonials return seven of their top-ten point producer from the 2012-13 season. The group is led by junior Cody Wydo, who recorded 33 points in 38 games last season. Wydo also led the team with 21 goals during the 2012-13 campaign.

TURNING YOUTH INTO EXPERIENCE The Colonials featured ten freshmen during the 2012-13 season. This year, RMU looks to transition that youth into experience that can guide the program after a 20-win season. With the departure of five seniors from last season, the Colonials boast a rather experience squad in front of three underclassmen netminders.

A BANNER SEASON The 2012-13 edition of Robert Morris men’s ice hockey will be remembered as one of the greatest in school history as the team set a new school record with 20 victories. The team finished with a 20-144 overall record while going 13-11-3 in Atlantic Hockey play. The Colonials would have two different seven-game unbeaten streaks while also claiming the inaugural Three Rivers Classic.

CLUTCH CODY When the Colonials needed a clutch goal, Robert Morris turned to junior forward Cody Wydo. Wydo supplied a quarter of the Colonials’ game-winning goals this season. Of his 21 goals, five were of the game-winning variety.

PROGRAM RECORD Last season, Robert Morris set a new program record for wins in a season with 20. The new mark included victories over NCAA Frozen Four finalist Quinnipiac, fifth-ranked Miami to capture the Three Rivers Classic, and an overtime victory over nationally-ranked Niagara.

THE ONLY MAN BEHIND THE BENCHES Robert Morris is led by Derek Schooley, who has been the only bench boss for the Colonials in the program’s 10-year history. Schooley has a career record of 124-156-40.

OFFENSE (T-44TH - 1.00 GOALS PER GAME) - Juniors Scott Jacklin and Cody Wydo recorded the only goals so far this season for the Colonials.

Robert Morris has yet to score an even-strength goal as Jacklin’s goal came on the power play and Wydo provided a short-handed goal.

- Junior forward Cody Wydo returns to Robert Morris after leading the Colonials with 21 goals in 38 games last season. Wydo’s 0.55 goals per game pace ranked him 9th in the NCAA for the 2012-13 season. Of his 21 goals, Wydo would also contribute five game-winning goals, good enough for 8th in the NCAA rankings.

- Senior forward Colin South had 13 goals in 36 games while junior forward Scott Jacklin had 10 goals in 34 games. South would finish the season ranked just inside the top 100 in the NCAA in goals per game with 0.36.

DEFENSE (T-31ST - 3.00 GOALS ALLOWED PER GAME) - Defenseman Evan Renwick sits in the top-15 nationally in blocked shots as he is averaging three blocked shots per game.

- Senior defenseman Andrew Blazek leads a veteran returning defensive unit with 18 points in 32 games last season. His 0.56 points per game average ranked him in the top 50 in the NCAA. Blazek netted nine goals in the 2012-13 season, the most by any Colonial defenseman.

- Sophomore goaltender Terry Shafer is the only goalie on the Robert Morris roster to see playing time last season. Shafer appeared in four games with a record of 1-2-0 to go with a 3.08 goalsagainst average and a .888 save percentage. Despite just under 200 minutes of game experience, Shafer’s only win was a shutout on the road at Canisius.

POWER PLAY (41ST - 6.7 PERCENT [1/15]) - Despite the tenth-most power-play opportunities in the NCAA (15), the Colonials have recorded just one power-play goal. That goal came off of the stick of Scott Jacklin in Saturday’s loss to Lake Superior State.

- Robert Morris closed out the 2012-13 season scoring a power-play goal in each of its AHA Quarterfinal contests against Connecticut. The Colonials also closed out the regular season with powerplay goals in consecutive games against Mercyhurst.

- The Colonials return the top-five power-play goal producers from last season. Leading the group is senior forward Colin South led RMU with five power-play goals last season. One of those goals came against Niagara in overtime to defeat the nationally-ranked Purple Eagles.

PENALTY KILL (T-28TH - 80.0 PERCENT [8/10]) - The Colonials are one of just 15 teams in the NCAA to have recorded a short-handed goal this season. That goal came from Cody Wydo in Friday’s loss to Lake Superior State.

- After not allowing a power-play goal in six games, the Colonials allowed power-play goals in back-to-back games to Connecticut in the AHA quarterfinals.

- Junior forward Cody Wydo would score three short-handed goals, a number that ranked him 2nd in the NCAA as Robert Morris led the nation with nine short-handed goals last season.

HEAD COACH DEREK SCHOOLEY

Head coach Derek Schooley was named the first head coach in Robert Morris history. Since taking over the program, Schooley has coached 41 players who have signed pro contracts, four players that have taken part in NHL training camps and numerous others that have participated in NHL developmental camps and tournaments. Now in his tenth year, Schooley enters the 2013-14 season with a record of 124-156-40 in his first nine seasons at Robert Morris.

Schooley’s teams have provided college hockey and Robert Morris athletics with some major upsets in the past few seasons.

In January of 2007, the Colonials knocked off No.2 Notre Dame 4-2 in South Bend, IN. In 2007-2008, Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska with an upset of four-time national champion and 8th ranked Boston University. However Schooley’s signature wins came in 2009-10 season with a sweep against No. 1 ranked Miami. Just three seasons later, Schooley’s Colonials would again knock of a nationally ranked Miami squad; this time it was to capture the inaugural Three Rivers Classic.

During the 2012-13 season, the Colonials would knock off three nationally-ranked teams en route to a 20-win campaign. Two seven-game unbeaten streaks allowed Schooley to guide his squad to a fifth-place regular season finish. After winning the Three Rivers Classic, Schooley and his team earned their second national ranking in program history as the Colonials broke in to the polls as the No. 19 team in the country heading in to January and a nationally televised game against Army. Schooley coached senior Adam Brace to a spot on the All-Atlantic Hockey Second Team while the Colonials were tops in the NCAA in short-handed goals scored.

RMU finished seventh in Atlantic Hockey during the 2011-12 season while boasting the best penalty kill in the nation as the successfully killed off 89.9 percent of their penalties. Schooley coached Cody Crichton to the All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team and Tyson Wilson to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team.

Schooley led the Colonials to a banner season in 2010-11 guiding the RMU to a school record 18 wins in a season when the Colonials earned their first national ranking. Robert Morris finished fifth in its first season in the Atlantic Hockey Association and hosted its first ever postseason game in the first round of the AHA Tournament. Schooley coached Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Atlantic Hockey first-team and helped Urban to All-American honors from the CollegeHockeyBlog.com.

Schooley also coached goaltender Brooks Ostergard on the third-team all-conference honors.

In the 2009-10 season at Mellon Arena (former home to the Pittsburgh Penguins), Schooley led the Colonials to their first win against a team ranked No. 1 in the nation as Robert Morris defeated Miami (OH) in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase.

The Colonials followed the win up with a trip to Oxford, Ohio and picked up a sweep against the 2009 National Runners-Up. During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris got off to a rough start with a team consisting of only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However, the Colonials rebounded in the second half of the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA Championship game where Robert Morris lost an overtime heartbreaker to an eventual Frozen Four team, Bemidji State. Five of Schooley’s student-athlete’s earned honors from the CHA as Chris Margott, Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban were named to the All-CHA First Team. Brooks Ostergard and James Lyle also garnered conference laurels as they were All-CHA Rookie Team selections.

In 2007-08, Schooley’s Colonials achieved their first 15 win and .500 season going 15-15-4, once again earning a third-place finish in the CHA. The 07-08 season featured many other firsts for Coach Schooley and the Colonial Hockey program. Senior forward Ryan Cruthers was named 2008 CHA Player of the Year and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded annually to college hockey’s most outstanding player. Senior forward, Joel Gasper was named the CHA StudentAthlete of the Year. Besides the two major CHA Awards, the Colonials placed four members on All League teams (Cruthers 1st Team; Chris Margott 2nd Team; Nathan Longpre and Denny Urban on the All-Rookie Team).

Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall record and a third-place finish in the CHA in 2006-07 while placing their first member on a CHA all-league team as Aaron Clarke was named to the All-CHA 2nd Team. The Colonials advanced to the CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime. In 2005-06, the Colonials increased their win total to twelve wins. The Colonials fourth place finish in the CHA included a win at Schooley’s alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA) along with a win against Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA quarterfinals.

Once again, the Colonials placed a member on the CHA All-Rookie Team (Chris Margott). In their inaugural season, the Colonials finished with an 8-21-4 overall record. Schooley and his staff would win their first ever game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the score of 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart. The Colonials placed two players, Jace Buzek and Chris Kaufman, on the CHA All-Rookie team.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent five years at the Air Force Academy. He was an Assistant Coach for four years before spending one season as an Associate Head Coach with Air Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season. Schooley started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he was named an assistant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games, he scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tallied 23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb 4, 1994. Also during the 199394 campaign he was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – October 12, 2013 - The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team concluded its first road trip of the season with a second game in as many days against Lake Superior State on Saturday. Although the Colonials picked up a power-play goal from Scott Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters) to opening the scoring, RMU would fall after allowing three consecutive goals, 3-1.

Just one game after going scoreless on seven power-play attempts, Robert Morris (0-2-0, 0-0-0 AHA) capitalized on a first-period penalty by Lake Superior State (2-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA). Despite eight power-play opportunities, Jacklin’s goal was the only offense that RMU was able to muster.

The Lakers’ parade to the penalty box began just two minutes into the opening frame. On the ensuing power play, the Colonials would record just one shot on goal. Robert Morris would get a second shot with the man advantage a short time later and this is when Jacklin would get the Colonials on the board. Cycling the puck along the right wing boards, Ben Robillard (Ottawa, Ontario / Ottawa Jr. Senators) found David Friedmann (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Canadiens) who then dished the puck to Jacklin. Jacklin then carried the puck into the right wing circle and let go of a shot that beat Kevin Murdock, the Lake Superior State goaltender, to give the Colonials the 1-0 lead.

After the power-play goal, Robert Morris would have to kill its first of three penalties in the contest. After RMU returned to full strength, Jacklin had a golden chance to increase the Colonials’ lead. Jacklin found himself in all alone on Murdock, but the Lakers’ goalie got the best of Jacklin this time with a save to keep the score 1-0.

The Colonials would have a third power-play opportunity as time expired in the opening period. RMU was unable to capitalize with this man advantage as play resumed with the start of the second period despite three shots on goal. Robert Morris would have three more power-play opportunities over a span of eight minutes in the second period. The Colonials were able to get four shots on goal while on the man advantages, but shortly after the third advantage expired, Lake Superior State would tie the game. As Murdock kicked a shot into the corner boards, Lake Superior State emerged from the scrum and busted out of the defensive zone. The puck was fed to Matt Johnson who entered the offensive zone along the left wing boards and fired a shot over the shoulder of freshman goaltender Dalton Izyk (Oswego, N.Y. / Indiana Ice).

A seventh power-play opportunity for Robert Morris would be cut short by an offensive zone penalty that forced the two teams to skate four-on-four. Both penalties expired without either squad taking the lead. Izyk’s collegiate debut would come to an abrupt end as he was removed from the game with four minutes remaining in the second period as he needed assistance to return to the Colonial bench after a stoppage in play. Terry Shafer (Penfield, N.Y. / New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) would come in to replace Izyk and make two saves to ensure that the second period ended with the score tied, 1-1.

It looked as though the Colonials had regained the lead in the opening seconds of the third period as a shot from the point was deflected behind Murdock. The referees deemed that the puck was deflected with a high stick and proceeded to waive off the goal as the score remained 1-1. Shortly after the disallowed goal, Robert Morris would head back to the power play for the eighth time. This man advantage would come and go without the Colonials registering a shot on goal. Almost midway through the third frame, Lake Superior State would take the lead with a goal by Andrew Dommett after a net-front scramble to put the Colonials down a goal, 2-1.

With less than four minutes remaining, the Lakers would double the deficit facing Robert Morris with a goal to make the score 3-1. Lake Superior State entered the offensive zone as Kevin Czuczman released a wrist shot from the right wing circle that beat Shafer over the shoulder.

Robert Morris would pull Shafer in the final minutes for an extra attacker but the move did not result in a second goal as time expired on the Colonials who suffered their second 3-1 defeat in as many days.

Izyk and defenseman Rob Mann (Oshawa, Ontario / Penticton Vees) each made their collegiate debuts in the loss. Izyk recorded ten saves before leaving the game while Shafer also recorded ten saves while suffering his second loss of the season. In just his second game as a Colonial, Robillard earned his first career point with the secondary assist on Jacklin’s goal in the first period.

Robert Morris outshot Lake Superior State, 28-23, as Zac Lynch (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) paced the team with five shots on goal. Defensively, Evan Renwick (Calgary, Alberta / Canmore Eagles) recorded a gamehigh three blocked shots for a second-consecutive game.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY OCTOBER 19, 2007 The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team fell to Wisconsin, 7-2, Friday evening.

With the loss, the Colonials are now, 2-1, on the season.

The Badgers jumped out to a quick first period, 3-0, lead with the first of their four power-play goals. Ben Street scored first for Wisconsin just 29 seconds into the period, Kyle Klubertanz scored 6 minutes later and Ryan McDonagh capped off the first period with a goal at the 12:57 mark of the first session.

Junior Jason Towsley (LaSalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) got the Colonials on the board with his third goal of the season 13:43 into the second period. Freshman Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) picked up an assist on the play. Wisconsin added another power-play goal inside the dreaded one minute mark, with three seconds left in the period, giving them a 4-1 lead at intermission.

Wisconsin picked up two more power-play goals to open the third session by Kyle Turris and Blake Geoffrion, before Street added his second goal of the game, making the score 7-1 with just over eight minutes remaining in the final frame. Senior Sean Berkstresser (Apollo, Pa. / Pittsburgh Forge) added a power-play goal for the Colonials with just under 1:30 left in the game, while Longpre and Jake Sparks (Evergreen, Colo. / Central Texas Blackhawks) grabbed the assists on the goal.

Senior Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Milton Icehawks) was credited with his first loss of the season, allowing four goals in twoperiods of work. Boucher made 22 saves on 26 shots. Sophomore Wes Russell (Springfield, Ill. / Quinnipiac) made nine saves on 12 shots during the third period. Shane Connelly stopped 24-of26 saves tallying the win.

For the game, Wisconsin out shot RMU 38-26.

RMU went 1-for-12 on the power-play and Wisconsin went 4-for-9.
