TOP STORY Robert Morris split a series with Maine this past weekend, earning its first win in the process. The Colonials dropped the first game of the series to the Black Bears, 3-2, in overtime. That defeat was RMU’s first in overtime since Feb. 16, 2013 at Lindenwood, and dropped the team to 0-3 for the first time since the 2007-08 season. However, the Colonials rebounded the next day, avoiding their first 0-4 start since 2005-06 with a 1-0 victory against Maine. The 1-0 win was the first of that kind for RMU since Jan. 28, 2012 when it defeated Niagara at home with a goal from Brianna Delaney.
SERIES HISTORY Overall: 1-1-0 • At Home: 0-0-0 • At CU: 1-1-0 • Neutral: 0-0-0
The Colonials have played Colgate twice in program history, with each contest providing completely different results. In their last meeting, RMU used the strength of their power play unit, as they converted on four of eight chances en route to a 5-2 victory over the Raiders. Rebecca Vint scored twice in the win, while Kelsey Thomas added a goal and an assist. The teams met for the first time on Nov. 11, 2005, with Colgate winning in dominant fashion, 9-0. Quinn Caggiula made 44 saves in the loss as the Colonials were outshot, 53-11.
SCOUTING COLGATE The Raiders have played just once this season, dropping a 2-1 contest at Syracuse. Colgate finished last season with an overall record of 10-22-2 and a mark of 7-15-0 in ECAC play. The Raiders’ leading scorer returns in senior forward Miriam Drubel, who tallied 10 goals and 13 assists in 2013-14. Three different goaltenders saw significant time between the pipes for Colgate last season, including sophomore Ashlynne Rando, who made 27 saves in the Raiders’ loss to the Orange. As a freshman, Rando went 6-10-1 with a 2.70 goals against average and a save percentage of .900.

Robert Morris hit the road for its first series away from 84 Lumber Arena last weekend as it played Maine. The first game saw the Colonials drop a heartbreaker in overtime, 3-2. Jessica Gazzola scored the first goal of her career in the defeat, while Maeve Garvey also lit the lamp for RMU. Ashley Vesci tallied two assists for the Colonials. Jessica Dodds stopped 28 of 31 shots she faced. The rubber match went RMU’s way with a 1-0 victory. With less than 12 minutes remaining in the game, Rikki Meilleur gathered a pass from Katie Fergus on a two-on-one breakaway and beat the Black Bears goaltender. Courtney Vinet picked up the third shutout of her career, making 18 saves in the win.
KNOW YOUR ENEMY The Robert Morris senior class is the only ones to play Colgate in their career, as the Colonials and Raiders played on Nov. 22, 2011. In that game, then-freshman Rebecca Vint registered her fifth multi-goal game of the season with two power-play tallies in a 5-2 victory. Joining Vint on the scoreboard was her linemate Katie Fergus, who scored a third-period power-play goal.
THE DECIDER Sophomore forward Rikki Meilleur has only scored two goals in her brief career at Robert Morris, but both of the tallies were of the game-winner variety. Last Saturday in the third period against Maine, Meilleur corralled a pass from Katie Fergus before lofting a shot over the Black Bears goaltender’s shoulder to give RMU the only goal in a 1-0 victory. Her first career goal didn’t provide the same dramatics, but it was still important. On Jan. 18, 2014 at No. 10 Quinnipiac, Meilleur scored off passes from Ashley Vesci and Brandi Pollock to double the Colonials’ 1-0 lead. RMU eventually won that contest, 5-1, giving the then-freshman forward the deciding goal.

Seniors Rebecca Vint and Katelyn Scott each played in the 100th game of their careers last weekend at Maine, becoming the 31st and 32nd players in program history to reach the century mark. Two other seniors are within striking distance of “The 100 Club” this season. Katie Fergus already topped the mark in the CHA Semifinals last season. Erin Staniewski is 16 contests shy of the century mark, while Kelsey Gunn is nine games away from 100, although she played 26 of those at Niagara University in 2011-12.

NETWORKING WITH THE COLONIALS Fans can follow the Colonials on Twitter @RMUWHockey to get updates on the team throughout the season. The account has the 15th most followers among NCAA Division I women’s hockey teams at 1,144.
ONE IS GOOD, TWO IS BETTER When Erin Staniewski lit the lamp in the Colonials’ season-opener against Bemidji State, she had set a new record for most games played (80) before scoring her first goal. The previous mark was set by Jenny Monteleone, who went 78 games before pushing the puck past a Niagara goaltender on Nov. 15, 2008. In addition, Staniewski became the seventh different player to score the first two goals of her career in consecutive games. The senior defenseman joined Jamie Ferrentino, Kathryn Traynor, Mallory Giambra, Jamie Joslin, Kathleen McDonald, and Katie Fergus among those to accomplish the feat. Five RMU players have scored their first two career goals in the same game: Vanessa Zwegers (Feb. 18, 2006 vs. Sacred Heart), Jessica Riley (Jan. 21, 2007 at Northeastern), Courtney Langston (Jan. 23, 2010 vs. Sacred Heart), Rebecca Vint (Oct. 7, 2011 vs. Lindenwood), and Anissa Gamble (Oct. 26, 2013 vs. Vermont).
O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Senior forward Rebecca Vint will serve as captain in 2014-15, becoming the seventh different Colonial to don the “C” in program history. Joining her as assistant captains are classmates Maddie Collias and Katelyn Scott, and junior forward Ashley Vesci. This is the fourth-straight season in which someone new has served as captain. Whitney Pappas was the last RMU player to wear the “C” for more than one season, in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
NEW FACES The Colonials have welcomed five new freshmen and two new coaches to the program this season. The RMU rookies hail from North Carolina, Ontario, and Wisconsin. Three of them are forwards (Jessica Gazzola, Katherine Murphy, and Amanda Pantaleo), while the other two will line up at defenseman (Leah Carey and Natalie Fraser). In addition, the Colonials have added alumna Chelsea Walkland and former Mercyhurst star Kelley Steadman to the coaching staff. Walkland, who donned the RMU colors from 2006-10, previously coached Oswego State and RIT. Steadman has been playing professionally with HC Tornado Moscow and with the U.S. Women’s National Team.

The Colonials gained national recognition last season, as Colontino guided them a school record 24 wins (24-8-3) and their first appearance in the national polls. Robert Morris reached as high as seventh in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey poll and eighth in the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) rankings. The Colonials also rattled off seven straight wins between Nov. 23 and Jan. 5, and held an unbeaten streak of 14 games, from Nov. 9 to Jan. 24. On Jan. 18, Colontino gained the top spot on the program’s career win leaderboard with his 53rd thanks to a 5-1 victory at No. 10 Quinnipiac. In 2012-13, Colontino led the Colonials to a record of 15-15-3, and earned a trip to the CHA semifinals for the fourth straight year. The 15 wins included a two-game sweep of No. 4/5 Mercyhurst in December, and a triple-overtime CHA first round victory over Lindenwood. The latter set a new record for the longest game in program history, as the contest lasted 108 minutes before Corbin Delaney found the back of the net. In Colontino’s first season, he made an immediate impact on the Robert Morris program. He led the Colonials to the largest year-to-year win improvement in Division I women’s hockey in 2011-12 before guiding the squad to a storybook ending as RMU captured the program’s first-ever conference championship. His turn-around of the RMU program earned him USCHO (U.S. College Hockey Online) National Coach of the Year accolades. Before coming to Robert Morris, Colontino had served as associate head coach at Mercyhurst since 2006. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach with the women’s team at the University of North Dakota for four years. Colontino began his coaching career as an assistant with Mercyhurst in 2000. As a player at Mercyhurst, Colontino was the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) co-Defensive Player of the Year as a senior and an All-MAAC First Team selection. Colontino earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mercyhurst in anthropology/archaeology in 2000 and proceeded to earn a Master of Science degree from Mercyhurst in organizational leadership in 2002.
