2011 Robert Morris Football Game Notes vs. Sacred Heart (10/29/11) - Page 3

Head Coach Joe Walton 18th Season - Pittsburgh ’57 At the forefront of the football renaissance at Robert Morris University throughout its 18-year history is Joe Walton, who has built the Colonials from a fledgling program into one of the top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the region. The one constant associated with the program, Walton was named the first head coach July 27, 1993. He started the program from scratch, completing everything from hiring assistant coaches to purchasing equipment to recruiting student-athletes for the team’s inaugural season in 1994. Walton’s fingerprints are all over the football program, and to prove that, RMU has played its home games since 2005 in a stadium that bears his name. During his tenure, Walton has led Robert Morris to the first Northeast Conference championship in 1996, guided RMU to a perfect 10-0 season in 2000 and in 2010 helped lead the Colonials to the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their league-high sixth regular-season championship. “It’s hard to believe,” Walton speaks on how fast time has elapsed. “I’ve said this many times before, and I mean it when I say that this situation is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. It happened at the right time. Before this position became available, I felt I was too young to quit coaching, but I wasn’t anxious to get back into pro football. When this came along, it was the perfect fit. This situation was the perfect opportunity for me to continue to do what I like to do, and I’ve loved every minute of it.” Under Walton’s tutelage, the Colonials have claimed outright NEC regular-season titles three times (1997, 1999, 2000) while sharing three others (1996, 1998, 2010). Walton led Robert Morris to back-to-back ECAC Bowl victories in 1996 and 1997, and in 1999 and 2000 he guided RMU to a pair of NCAA I-AA mid-major national crowns according to Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. In 2010, Walton added to his legacy by engineering the Colonials on an eightgame winning streak for a share of the NEC regular-season title and the NEC’s first bid in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. In the process he picked up his 100th career victory in the collegiate ranks.

Game #2 • Robert Morris 35, Sacred Heart 31 Saturday, September 11, 2010 • Fairfield, Conn. Campus Field (Attendance: 2,076) - Quarterback Jeff Sinclair hit tight end Shadrae King with an eight-yard touchdown pass with just 17 seconds to play to help lift Robert Morris to a comefrom-behind victory over Sacred Heart, 35-31, in the 2010 Northeast Conference opener for both programs. Robert Morris trailed three times in the contest, including a pair of double-digit deficits, before the late game heroics of Sinclair and King helped propel the Colonials to victory. Sacred Heart had taken a 31-28 lead with just 59 seconds to go when quarterback Dale Fink found a wide open Sean Kessler for a 47-yard touchdown pass to cap a five-play, 76-yard drive and put the Pioneers back on top. RMU got the ball back with 52 seconds remaining but had good field position after Anthony Coleman posted a 20-yard kickoff return to set up the Colonial offense at its own 40-yard line. Running the hurry-up offense, Sinclair connected with wide receiver Jamie Cobb for a 27yard gain to the Sacred Heart 33-yard line. On the next play Sinclair hooked up with King for a 25-yard completion to move Robert Morris to the Pioneer eight-yard line, and two plays later Sinclair and King hooked up again, this time for the winning score. Sacred Heart had jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on the strength of a pair of touchdown passes from Fink to running back Marcel Archer. The first, a three-yard touchdown pass, came with 1:47 left in the first quarter, while a six-yard connection for a score with 10:05 to play before halftime gave the Pioneers a two-score advantage. RMU battled back to tie it at the break, 14-14, with running back Myles Russ providing a 17yard touchdown run and Sinclair hitting King for the first of three touchdowns on the afternoon with a 12-yard score with just 37 ticks left on the clock in the first half. The Pioneers owned the third quarter, stretching their lead back to double digits, 24-14, thanks to a six-yard touchdown pass from Fink to Rich Rossi and a 46-yard field goal by Jesper Fredriksson. The Colonials didn’t wilt, climbing back to take their first lead of the 2010 season with a pair of touchdowns. Score By Quarters Robert Morris Sacred Heart

Sinclair finished with 110 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns on just five carries, an average of 22.0 yards per rush. Sinclair posted touchdown runs of 64 and 22 yards in the second quarter to help the Colonials build a 35-0 halftime lead en route to the victory. Overall, Sinclair is the 12th different player in school history to post a 100-yard rushing game.

2011 Robert Morris Football Game Notes vs. Sacred Heart (10/29/11) - Page 6 A New No. 1 - Senior tight end Shadrae King tied a career high with nine receptions in a 23-20 victory @ Monmouth (10/1), compiling 104 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. In addition to recording his third career 100yard receiving game, King became the program’s all-time leading receiver. He enters Saturday’s game against Sacred Heart with 128 career catches, a total that eclipsed the record of 112 that was held by former wide receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05). King also owns 1,516 career receiving yards, which ranks second all-time at Robert Morris, and 21 touchdown catches, tied for the career school record. King enters Saturday’s game against Sacred Heart ranked fourth in the Northeast Conference in receptions per game (4.86) and 10th in receiving yards (48.9) per contest. Dr. Dre - Senior tight end Shadrae King led the Colonials in receptions agianst Bryant (10/22), posting six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. It marked the 26th straight game dating back to the 2009 campaign that King has recorded at least one reception, extending a school record. King eclipsed the old mark of former wide receiver Opio Gary (1998-2000), who closed out his Robert Morris career by posting at least one reception in each of his final 22 games. Two Pair - Quarterback Jeff Sinclair tossed three touchdown passes in a 45-14 victory over Saint Francis (10/8), including a pair to senior tight end Shadrae King. Thanks to the three scores through the air from Sinclair against the Red Flash, Robert Morris improved to 10-3 (.769) when he tosses two or more touchdown passes in a game. Many Happy Returns - Senior Anthony Coleman has been a rock for Robert Morris on special teams throughout his career, as the wide receiver enters Saturday’s game against Sacred Heart owning Robert Morris career records for kickoff returns (95) and kickoff return yards (2,056). Thanks to a careerhigh 175 all-purpose yards against Bryant (10/22), Coleman became the sixth player in school history to eclipse 3,000 career all-purpose yards. He enters Saturday’s game with 3,164 and is just 113 yards shy of eclipsing the top five all-time at RMU. Based on his career average of 105.7 all-purpose yards per game, Coleman is on pace to finish his career with 3,587 career yards. Start Me Up - Seniors Anthony Coleman and Brad Rodgers each enter Saturday’s game against Sacred Heart as RMU’s active leader in career starting assignments with 29. Coleman has started 29 straight at wide receiver, the longest active streak for consecutive starts, while Rodgers owns 27 straight starts on the offensive line and 29 overall. Dynamic Duo - Senior tight end Shadrae King hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair in the second quarter against Bryant (10/22), helping him tie the school record for career touchdown receptions of 21 that is also held by former wide receiver Tyjuan Massey (2002-05). Over the last three seasons, Sinclair has connected with King for 15 touchdowns, the second highest total between a quarterback-receiver combo in school history. The only total higher comes from former quarterback Drew Geyer (2002-05) and Massey, who hooked up for 17 touchdowns over their four years together on the roster.

Last RMU Game Game #7 • Bryant 34, Robert Morris 27 October 22, 2011 • Moon Township, Pa. Joe Walton Stadium (Attendance: 5,878) - Jordan Brown’s 10-yard touchdown run with 32 seconds to play helped lift Bryant to a 34-27 victory over Robert Morris. RMU had taken a 27-20 advantage with 6:41 remaining when junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair tossed his third touchdown pass of the day, connecting with senior wide receiver Jamie Cobb for a 14-yard score that capped a 10-play, 59-yard drive. The Bulldogs responded on their next possession to tie the score, 2727, when Mike Croce hit tight end Matt Tracey with a 13-yard touchdown pass with 3:16 to play. Robert Morris looked to be driving on its next possession, reaching the Bryant 45-yard line after two rushes for 21 yards from redshirt freshman running back Deontae Howard and a personal foul penalty by the Bulldogs. However, Sinclair was sacked for an 11-yard loss on 1st-and-10 and threw two consecutive incompletions, forcing the Colonials to punt. Jordan Harris came through on special teams for Bryant, blocking freshman Tony LaMancusa’s punt. A mad scramble for the loose ball ensued, with Bryant recovering on the 25-yard line of Robert Morris with 1:16 to go. Three plays later Brown scored his second touchdown of the game to bolster the Bulldogs to victory. RMU owned a 20-13 halftime advantage thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Sinclair and a pair of field goals by junior kicker Greg Langer in the first half. Sinclair's first touchdown pass of the day went for 12 yards to senior tight end Shadrae King with 11:25 to play before halftime and gave the Colonials a 10-6 advantage. Bryant jumped back in front, 13-10, when Croce hit Jordan Harris with a 34-yard touchdown pass, but Sinclair found senior wide receiver Anthony Coleman for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 3:48 to go before the break to push Robert Morris back on top, 17-13. Langer's 36yard field goal with just three seconds left before intermission gave the Colonials their touchdown advantage. The only score of the third quarter came courtesy of Tracey, who caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Croce at the 5:22 mark and tied the game, 20-20. Sinclair completed 20 of his 42 passing attempts for 227 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. King recorded six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, Cobb added five receptions for 70 yards and a score and Coleman compiled four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown in a balanced attack for the RMU receiving corps. 2011 Robert Morris Football Game Notes vs. Sacred Heart (10/29/11) - Page 7 The Long and The Short of It - Senior wide receiver Anthony Coleman, thanks to four seasons as the starter at return specialist for Robert Morris, has put up some impressive numbers across the board. In addition to entering Saturday’s game against Sacred Heart ranked sixth all-time at RMU in career all-purpose yards with 3,164, Coleman has produced 65 plays for the Colonials over the last four years that have been at least 20 yards or longer. Broke down, 48 of those 65 (73.8%) have come on kickoff returns, 15 (23.1%) have come via receptions and five (7.7%) on punt returns. The 65 plays of 20 yards or longer by Coleman are the most in school history, eclipsing the 62 former wide receiver Tyjuan Massey posted from 2002 to 2005. Foot Joy - One of the most important aspects that junior Jeff Sinclair brings to the quarterback position at Robert Morris is his versatility. In a 45-14 victory over Saint Francis (10/8), Sinclair posted a pair of touchdown runs, including a 64-yard run in the second quarter and a 22-yard scamper with 25 seconds left before halftime that gave RMU a 35-0 halftime lead. In 25 career games, Sinclair has already rushed for 12 touchdowns. To put that in perspective, prior to Sinclair becoming the starter under center at RMU, quarterbacks combined for 16 rushing touchdowns in the first 156 games of the program’s history. New Balance - Redshirt freshman running back Deontae Howard earned his first career start at halfback @ Albany (10/15), posting 18 carries for 49 yards, an average of 2.7 yards per rush. Howard is the third different Colonial to start at halfback so far on the 2011 campaign, joining true freshmen Duane Mitchell and Justin Brooks. Howard is the 19th different player to earn their first career start so far this season for Robert Morris. An Important Position - Catching his first career touchdown pass @ Liberty (9/10) was sophomore tight end Vince Mongelluzzo, who hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass in with 10:25 remaining in the fourth quarter for his first career reception. One of the most important positions in head coach Joe Walton’s offense, Mongelluzzo is the 18th different tight end in the 18-year history of the program to post a touchdown catch. In fact, Mongelluzzo is currently one of four tight ends in school history whose only catch is a touchdown, joining junior Tyler Digby and former Colonials Jeremy Wise (2002-05) and Sean McElhinny (2007-10). Saturday Night Lights - Robert Morris hosted its first night game in the program’s 18year history as part of the University’s Homecoming festivities Oct. 8, rolling to a 45-14 win over in-state rival Saint Francis at Joe Walton Stadium. A total of 4,384 fans packed “The Joe” for the win over the Red Flash, the largest crowd in the seven-year history of the facility as well as the sixth official sellout since the venue opened in 2005. The game marked just the seventh time Robert Morris played a game with a kickoff after 5:00 p.m., with the Colonials owning a record of 2-5 (.286) all-time in night games. Four of RMU’s seven night games have come in the last three years. Home Sweet Home - Slowly but surely, Robert Morris has learned to protect its home turf at Joe Walton Stadium. Thanks to a 42-24 win over Central Connecticut State (11/6/10) that clinched a share of the 2010 Northeast Conference championship, RMU stretched its winning streak at “The Joe” to eight games, the longest winning streak at the facility since opening the stadium in 2005. Despite a 19-13 setback to Dayton (9/3) in the 2011 season opener that snapped the eight-game surge, overall Robert Morris owns a record of 18-16 (.529) in seven seasons at Joe Walton Stadium.

Making The Grade - Defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof became the third player in program history to be named to the Capital One Academic All-America Team in 2010 when he earned second team accolades. Nearhoof owns a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.87 as a biology major and joined former Colonials Jonathan LeDonne (2001-04) and Ray Gensler (2003-06) to earn the honor. LeDonne, a linebacker, was named to the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team, while Gensler, a defensive lineman, was a twotime honoree, earning second team accolades in 2005 and first team honors in 2006. In the seven games of the 2011 campaign, Nearhoof owns 36 tackles, including four and-a-half sacks, and a pair of fumble recoveries. He enters Saturday’s game against Sacred Heart as RMU’s active leader in career tackles with 113. Preseason Honors - A total of five Colonials earned spots on the 2011 All-Northeast Conference Preseason Team. Junior quarterback Jeff Sinclair, senior center Logan Miles and senior tight end Shadrae King were placed on offense, junior defensive lineman Nolan Nearhoof earned a spot on defense and senior Anthony Coleman was picked as the return specialist on special teams. In addition, King was named to the 2011 Preseason Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America Second Team by both The Sports Network and Phil Steele and the 2011 Preseason FCS Honorable Mention Team by Consensus Draft Services. Mitchell On The Move - Did any student-athlete have a better year in 2010-11 than Steve Mitchell? In the fall of 2010, Mitchell started all 11 games on the defensive line, recording 37 tackles in helping Robert Morris claim its sixth NEC regular-season championship and the league’s inaugural bid to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs. In the spring of 2011 he ignited the RMU outdoor track & field squad to a second-place finish at the 2011 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 133 points, the squad’s highest finish since winning the 2000 NEC Outdoor Track & Field title with 146.5 points. Mitchell was named the 2011 Most Outstanding Field Performer after claiming gold in the hammer throw and silver in the shot put. He posted a toss of 50.83 meters in the hammer and a throw of 16.29 meters in the shot, establishing a new RMU outdoor school record. To top it off, Mitchell owns a 3.55 cumulative grade point average as a management major.

The Streak Continued - The football program helped Robert Morris extend one of its most impressive streaks in school history in the fall of 2010. The Colonials returned to the top of the Northeast Conference after a 10-year hiatus with a record of 7-1 (.875) in league play and shared the 2010 regular-season championship with Central Connecticut State. However, by virtue of a 42-24 victory over the Blue Devils at Joe Walton Stadium (11/6/10), RMU clinched the NEC’s inaugural bid to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs. It marked the 12th straight season that Robert Morris has sent at least one of its programs to an NCAA Tournament, dating back to the 1999-2000 campaign. 2011 Robert Morris Football Game Notes vs. Sacred Heart (10/29/11) - Page 9 Those Issues Are Secondary - Through the first seven contests of the 2011 season, a member of the Robert Morris secondary has led the team in tackles in six games. Included in that group is senior cornerback Alex Tarr (twice), junior safeties Cameron Chadwick (twice) and Eric Lowry and sophomore safety D.J. Myers. Chadwick is coming off a performance in which he posted a 12 tackles against Bryant (10/22), the second straight game that he has led the Colonials in tackles and second straight double-digit takedown game. RMU enters Saturday’s game with 189 of its 480 tackles (39.3 percent) so far this season having come from its secondary. Rank and File - Robert Morris certainly posted a defining victory when it garnered a 30-23 upset win over No. 14/15 Liberty (9/18) at Joe Walton Stadium, but should it really come as a surprise? The victory improved the Colonials to a perfect 2-0 when squaring off with a ranked opponent at home. RMU defeated fellow Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut State, 23-17, in a pair of overtimes at Joe Walton Stadium Oct. 14, 2006, for its first win over a ranked opponent. The Blue Devils entered that game ranked No. 19 by The Sports Network, while the Flames occupied the No. 15 spot in TSN’s poll before falling to the Colonials. RMU’s loss @ Liberty (9/10) dropped the Colonials to 2-2 (.500) all-time when facing off with a ranked opponent, as the Flames entered the game ranked 24th by The Sports Network. To see the latest FCS national rankings by The Sports Network, please see page 7 of RMU’s game notes. Get To The Chopper - A quick glance at RMU’s record when broken down proves how important it is the Colonials get off to a good start in contests. When Robert Morris is leading at halftime, the program owns an all-time record of 85-11 (.885). When trailing at the break, Robert Morris owns a mark of 10-56-1 (.157). Even going into halftime tied is beneficial, as the Colonials own an overall record of 11-8 (.579) in such games. The Magic Mark - Since the Colonials began play in 1994 there have been 70 games in which Robert Morris has scored 30 or more points. In those contests RMU boasts a record of 66-4 (.944), including a record of 38-4 (.905) in games in which the team scores between 30 and 39 points. In games in which the Colonials score 40 or more points, RMU is a perfect 28-0. RMU Football Historical Tidbits - The inaugural running back at Robert Morris, the late Tim Hall (1994-95), rushed for 2,908 yards in his two seasons as a Colonial. Hall still owns the FCS season and career records for yards per carry, with his season record of 8.7 yards per carry set in 1994 and his twoyear career record of 7.4 established in 1994 and 1995 ... Hall also ranks fourth all-time in the FCS in all-purpose yards per game (194.8) ... Former Colonial linebacker James Noel (2002-05) ranks fifth in the FCS record book for career tackles per game (10.7), while his career tackle total of 437 takedowns ranks 12th all-time ... Former linebacker Alex DiMichele (2007-10) averaged 10.3 tackles per game over his three years in a Robert Morris uniform, which is tied for eighth all-time in the FCS record book with former Saint Francis linebacker Matthew Parker, who played from 2007 to 2010. A Colonial in the NFL Hank Fraley, who played on the offensive line for Robert Morris from 19961999, has carved a niche for himself in the National Football League (NFL). Signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to a free agent contract in April 2000, Fraley was claimed off waivers the following August by the Philadelphia Eagles. After an ankle injury to Bubba Miller in the final 2001 preseason game, Fraley stepped up and started at center for Philadelphia the entire season, helping the team to the 2002 NFC Championship game. For four straight seasons with Fraley starting at center from 2002-05, the Eagles appeared in the NFC Championship game. In 2005, Fraley became the first RMU football alum to appear in the Super Bowl when he started at center against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. Prior to the start of the 2006 campaign, Fraley was traded by Philadelphia to Cleveland, where he started all 16 games for the Browns on the year. Fraley played four seasons with the Browns from 2006 to 2009, earning 52 starts in 63 games, before signing as a free agent with the St. Louis Rams March 14, 2010. Entering the 2011 season, which will be his 12th year in the NFL, Fraley has started 123 of his career 142 games and has also earned 10 starts in the postseason. Primarily a center, Fraley has also started at both guard and tackle throughout his NFL career. Fraley became the second Colonial to have his number retired, joining inaugural running back Tim Hall (1994-95), as Fraley’s No. 75 was enshrined prior to RMU’s game against Sacred Heart on Sept. 22, 2001. Fraley became the sixth football inductee into the Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame when he was enshrined Oct. 14, 2006.
