Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team opens its 2013-14 regular season and 38th campaign of Division I basketball Friday when it welcomes Savannah State to the Charles L. Sewall Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip. Led by fourth-year head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials return two starters and six letterwinners from a 2012-13 team that posted an overall record of 24-11 (.686), RMU’s eighth straight winning season. Robert Morris claimed its 10th Northeast Conference regular season championship in 2012-13 thanks to a mark of 14-4 (.778) in league play but fell in the semifinals of the NEC Tournament. Despite the loss, the Colonials advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) for the second time in program history, earning a 59-57 win over Kentucky in the first round before falling @ Providence, 77-68, in the second round. Robert Morris returns its top two scorers from last season, as senior guard Karvel Anderson scored at a 12.5 points per game clip, while junior forward Lucky Jones averaged 11.6 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per contest. Senior forward Mike McFadden is also a returning starter in 2013-14 after averaging 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds last season.

Quick Stat of the Night - Robert Morris enters Saturday’s tilt against Savannah State with a record of 19-18 (.514) all-time in season openers. The Colonials are opening their season at home in the Charles L. Sewall Center for the third time in four seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. In its last season opener at home, RMU posted an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11), while the Colonials defeated Saint Peter’s (11/13/10), 55-30, in Toole’s collegiate debut as the head coach at Robert Morris. In the inaugural meeting between the two programs, SSU posted a 61-52 victory over the Colonials at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga., Nov. 26, 2012. In that contest Robert Morris shot just 28.6 percent (16-for-56) but rallied late.

Five straight points from Lucky Jones, including a three-point play, made it a two-possession game, 48-42 in favor of SSU, with 2:26 to play. Savannah State, however, shot 13-for-16 at the freethrow line in the final 2:11 of action to seal the victory. Jones paced RMU, scoring 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free-throw line. Guard Karvel Anderson added 10 points and four rebounds off the bench, but the rest of the squad shot just 18.2 percent (6-for-33) from the floor.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Fourth Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2013-14 campaign marks his fourth season as head coach of the Colonials.

Toole signed a three-year contract extension at Robert Morris May 3, 2013, meaning he will lead the Colonials through the 2017-18 campaign. In three seasons under Toole’s tutelage, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 68-36 (.654), including a mark of 39-15 (.722) against Northeast Conference opponents.

In 2012-13, Toole led RMU to an overall record of 24-11 (.686). The Colonials claimed their 10th NEC regular-season championship with a ledger of 14-4 (.778), helping Robert Morris earn its fifth postseason appearance in the last six years. RMU earned a spot in the 2013 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), advancing to the second round thanks to a 59-57 victory over Kentucky (3/19/13) in front of 3,444 fans at the Charles L. Sewall Center, the largest crowd in school history. In the second round, the Colonials dropped a 77-68 decision at Providence (3/25/13).

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole guided RMU to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of 12-6 (.667) in the NEC. The Colonials advanced to the championship game of the NEC Tournament, falling three minutes shy of earning its third straight title before falling in overtime at LIU Brooklyn, 85-82.

The following season in 2011-12, Robert Morris posted an overall record of 26-11 (.703), including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC. RMU tied a school record for victories, advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game and earned its inaugural berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). In the 2012 CIT, the Colonials advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road wins at Indiana State and Toledo, marking the program’s first victories in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Overall, Toole has been at Robert Morris six seasons. He spent the 2007-08 campaign as an assistant under former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10) before being elevated to Associate Head Coach for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. He is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last six years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 141-67 (.678), with the 141 victories both a school and NEC record for a six-year span. RMU’s 141 wins over the last six years is tied with Davidson for eighth among mid-major programs over that span, and the Colonials also own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

While RMU's overall success is apparent, the program's accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last six years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 85-23 (.787) against league opposition, having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008, 2009 and 2013 and shared the title in 2010 with Quinnipiac.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the NIT, dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning its sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J., serving as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic and Rebounds, a 28,000-square foot facility where high school players focus on development.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, and the couple resides in the Pittsburgh, Pa., suburb of Mt. Lebanon with their son, Ryan.

Hawkeye - Entering the 2013-14 season, the Colonial that owns the longest streak of consecutive games played is sophomore forward Stephan Hawkins. One of just two players to appear in all 35 games in 2012-13, Hawkins supplied Robert Morris with averages 2.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 45.7 percent (32-for-70) from the field.

Hawkins led RMU in blocks with 25, an average of 0.71 per game that ranked 12th in the Northeast Conference. The all-time record for consecutive games played belongs to former guard Velton Jones, who played in 121 straight contests from 2009 to 2013.

Chicks Dig The Long Ball - Robert Morris enters the 2013-14 campaign coming off a recordbreaking season in its shooting from beyond the arc. The Colonials finished the 2012-13 campaign having established new single-season records in both three-point field goals (300) and three-point field goals attempted (788). RMU also led the Northeast Conference in both three-point field goals made (8.57 per game) and three-point field goal percentage (.381).

Tag Team - Robert Morris wouldn’t have been able to establish a new school record for three-point field goals in 2012-13 without the contributions it received from guards Karvel Anderson and Coron Williams. Anderson posted a team-high 82 three-pointers last season, which established a new school record by a member of the junior class and also ranks sixth in the RMU single-season record book. Williams ranked second for Robert Morris in triples last year with 74, which is tied for eighth in the Robert Morris single-season record book, and finished his RMU career ranked fifth in three-pointers with 210. Combined the duo established a new school record for three-pointers by an RMU tandem in 2012-13 with 156.

The old school record of 150 was set in 2008-09 by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10).

Luck Of The Draw - Playing arguably the best basketball for Robert Morris over the final two-thirds of the 2012-13 campaign was forward Lucky Jones, who will look to use that performance as a springboard into his junior season in 2013-14. Over the last 19 games of the 2012-13 campaign, Jones reached double figures in scoring in 16 contests and led Robert Morris in scoring and rebounding, producing averages of 13.4 points and 6.1 caroms per contest. Over that span, Jones shot 50.7 percent (74-for-146) from the field, including 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from beyond the arc, and 83.5 percent (76-for-91) at the freethrow line.

On The Offensive - Robert Morris enters the 2013-14 campaign with an impressive streak intact, as the Colonials have won 35 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the field dating back to the 2008-09 season. The last loss for RMU when hitting at least half its shots came in a 92-72 setback @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47). Under fourth-year head coach Andrew Toole, RMU is a perfect 20-0 when turning the trick. Broken down, Robert Morris was 7-0 in both 2011-12 and 2012-13 when converting at least 50 percent of its shots from the floor and 6-0 in Toole’s first season as head coach in 2010-11.

Ant Marching - Senior guard Anthony Myers-Pate will take the reigns as the facilitator of RMU’s offense in his final season of eligibility in 2013-14. Over the last three seasons, Myers-Pate has appeared in 101 career games, including 22 starting assignments. In 32 contests in 2012-13, Myers-Pate dished out 88 assists, an average of 2.75 per game that ranked second for the Colonials. Myers-Pate, who established an RMU freshman record for assists with 116 in 2010-11, enters this season as the program’s active leader in assists (315) and steals (110), ranking 12th all-time at Robert Morris in career dimes. He needs just 23 assists to crack the top 10 all-time and also owns a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.83.

The Clibanoff Special - What did forward Lucky Jones have in common in 2012-13 with Otto Porter of Georgetown, Doug McDermott of Creighton and Christian Watford of Indiana?

The quartet were the only four players in NCAA Division I on the year to connect for at least 40 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc (minimum 40 attempts), grab a rebound every five minutes and get to the free-throw line an average of once every seven minutes.

In 2012-13, Jones converted 42.7 percent (44-for-103) of his attempts from deep and grabbed 203 rebounds in 955 minutes, an average of one every 4.7 minutes. Jones was also RMU’s top free-throw shooter, converting 82.2 percent (125-for-152) of his attempts at the chalk while averaging a free-throw attempt every 6.3 minutes. The old record of 10 consecutive victories came against Wagner from Jan. 14, 1988, to Feb. 3, 1992. Robert Morris also tied its own record with its 11th straight win over Fairleigh Dickinson with an 89-46 win over the Knights at the Sewall Center Feb. 23, 2013.

THE GREATEST COMEBACK ...

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (2007-09) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

WE’RE STREAKING Thanks to an 83-79 overtime victory over Wagner (2/9/13), RMU stretched its run of consecutive winning seasons to eight, the longest streak in school history. Since the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials own an overall record of 172-92 (.651), including a mark of 104-40 (.722) in the Northeast Conference.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. Scouting the Tigers - Savannah State opens its 2013-14 campaign Friday, Nov. 8, by visiting the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on the University of Pittsburgh before visiting the Sewall Center Saturday night to take on the Colonials. The Tigers finished with an overall record of 19-15 (.559) in 2012-13, including a record of 11-5 (.688) in the MidEastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Just one starter returns for SSU in 2013-14 in senior guard Deven Williams, who averaged 7.9 points per game last season. In its lone exhibition game of the 2013-14 season, Savannah State posted a 73-61 victory over Armstrong Atlantic (10/31/13) behind 10 points from senior forward Joshua Montgomery.

Savannah State Head Coach - In his ninth season as head coach of Savannah State is Horace Broadnax (Georgetown ’86). The 11th head coach in the history of the Tigers, Broadnax inherited a team that went 0-28 prior to his arrival in 2005, but by 2008-09 he guided Savannah State to its first winning season in over 20 years. In 2011-12, the Tigers reached another milestone, winning their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season championship and its first ever bid to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Broadnax enters the 2013-14 season with a career record of 141-226 (.384), including a mark of 105-128 (.451) at Savannah State.

RMU’s Last Game - Freshman forward Jeremiah Worthem converted a pair of free throws with 2:24 to play to give the Robert Morris a 59-58 lead en route to a 64-58 win over Division II California (Pa.) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, Oct. 28. RMU closed the game on a 12-3 surge to defeat the Vulcans in its only exhibition game of the 2013 preseason. California (Pa.) jumped out to a 6-2 advantage thanks to three-pointers from Arman Marks and Jake Jacubec and rarely trailed in the first half, owning its biggest lead at the 13:35 mark when Josh Dombrosky converted a layup to give the Vulcans a 14-5 edge. Robert Morris responded with a 9-0 run to knot the score, 14-14, but Cal U. used a 6-0 spurt to keep the Colonials at bay. The two teams eventually entered halftime deadlocked, 28-28, as senior forward Mike McFadden paced the RMU offense in the first stanza with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and a 4-for-5 performance at the free-throw line. Marks opened the second half with a threepointer to give California (Pa.) a 31-28 lead, and neither squad owned an advantage larger than six points after intermission. Junior guard Desjuan Newton capped a 9-5 run with a threepointer to give the Colonials a 40-36 lead with 14:53 to play, but the Vulcans used a 10-2 surge to grab their own four-point advantage, 46-42, at the 10:59 mark of the second half.

California (Pa.) owned a 51-45 edge with 8:35 to play thanks to a pair of free throws from Drew Cook, but Robert Morris battled back to tie the contest, 52-52, with 4:58 to go thanks to a layup by Worthem. Jake Jacbuec, who led the Vulcans with 13 points, answered with a three-pointer to again push Cal U. back in front, 55-53, but a jumper from junior forward Lucky Jones and a three-point play by freshman guard Kavon Stewart pushed the Colonials back in front, 57-55. The three-pointer helped the cause all evening for the Vulcans, as Tynell Fortune's trifecta with 2:50 to go provided the 10th lead change of the game as California (Pa.) took a 58-57 edge. On RMU's next possession, Newton missed a jumper and Worthem grabbed the offensive board and was fouled to go the free-throw line.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Since the beginning of the 200708 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 108-21 (.837) when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 57-14 (.803) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who enters his fourth season at the helm of the program in 2013-14. In Toole’s 104 games on the sidelines, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 71 contests, an amazing 68.2 percent of the time. Included in those 71 contests are 32 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with Robert Morris owning an astounding mark of 31-1 (.969) in those games. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 28 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris has become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2003-04 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.23 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn (7.06). Guard Karvel Anderson paced Robert Morris by draining 82 three-pointers in 2012-13, a total that ranks sixth in the RMU single-season record book.
