Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

At the heart of the resurgence for Robert Morris since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign been one aspect: Defense. Over the last four years, the Colonials have held eight opponents to 45 points or less. Robert Morris opened its 2010-11 campaign and christened the Andrew Toole era with a virtuoso defensive performance, holding Saint Peter’s to a shooting percentage of just 16.7 percent (6-for-36) and 30 points in a 55-30 victory at the Charles L. Sewall Center (11/13/10). It marks the fewest points RMU has allowed in its 35-year Division I history. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris has posted eight of its top 12 best defensive performances against Division I opponents in regard to points allowed. Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last four seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Choice Hotels NEC Rookie of the Week

Preseason Poll Notes: It marks the sixth straight year the Colonials have been picked to finish in the top three in the league ... Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... RMU has never been the preseason favorite to win an NEC title

Scouting the Broncs- Rider posted an overall record of 23-11 (.676) in 2010-11, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference that was good enough to finish in a tie for second place with Iona. The Broncs advanced to the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament before falling to the Gaels but participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), dropping an 84-50 decision at the University of Northern Iowa. Rider is led by senior guard/forward Novar Gadson, who has posted career totals of 1,153 points and 622 rebounds. Last season Gadson averaged 13.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest while finishing second for the Broncs in blocks with 31. Rider will also be bolstered by the addition of senior guard Jeff Jones, who scored 555 points in three seasons at Virginia before transferring to Rider and sitting out the 2010-11 season. Rider Head Coach - The 2011-12 campaign marks the sixth season for head coach Tommy Dempsey (Susquehanna ’97) at Rider. He enters Friday’s 2011-12 season opener against Robert Morris having posted a record of 98-65 (.601) as head coach of the Broncs. Dempsey spent two seasons as head coach of Keystone College, compiling a 55-8 record, and was 33-4 in his lone season as the head coach of Lackawanna College. RMU’s Last Game - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams each surpassed 20 points in helping Robert Morris to a 76-70 victory over Wheeling Jesuit at the Charles L. Sewall Center in RMU’s only exhibition contest of the preseason, Oct. 31. Johnson posted the game’s lone double-double with game-highs in both points (23) and rebounds (10) on the strength of a 6-for-8 performance from the field and an 11-for-15 effort from the foul line. He also led the Colonials with four assists and added two steals and a block. Williams tallied 22 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 3of-5 from long range, and a 5-for-6 mark from the charity stripe. Robert Morris built a 46-32 advantage early in the second half and still maintained a double-figure lead near the midway point of the final frame, but the Cardinals mounted a late rally to tighten the affair. Wheeling Jesuit’s Recardo Gaddy hit a three-pointer with 2:43 remaining in regulation to tie the game, 64-64, for the first time in the half. Once the Cardinals had evened the game, Robert Morris took control, aided in large part by Johnson. RMU scored on each of its final six possessions while forcing the Cardinals into three missed field goals along with a turnover over the closing stretch. Johnson notched eight points and snared four rebounds, including two key offensive boards, during the final 2:15 of regulation to effectively help Robert Morris seal the victory. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones also nailed four free throws in the final minute to help RMU close out the game. Jones finished with eight points and four rebounds while contributing three assists without a turnover. After RMU tallied the game’s first five points, which came on an opening-possession layup by senior Lawrence Bridges and a three by Jones, Wheeling Jesuit soon knotted the game, 7-7, fewer than three minutes into the contest. For the next 13 minutes of action, neither team could open up a significant advantage as the lead did not extend beyond four points in either direction. Growing Up - As the 2010-11 season progressed for Robert Morris, a young team began to mature. The Colonials started the 2010-11 campaign 1-5 (.167) in games decided by five points or less, and despite a three-point overtime setback @ Long Island (3/9/11) in the championship game of the 2011 NEC Tournament, RMU owned a mark of 8-2 (.800) in close games after the calendar switched to 2011. Overall on the 2010-11 season the Colonials finished with a mark of 9-7 (.563) in games decided by five points or less. Robert Morris will look to carry the success it had late in the 2010-11 campaign thanks to four returning starters in 2011-12. Over the last four seasons, RMU owns a record of 25-14 (.641) in games decided by five points or less. Five Against One - Thanks to a 66-49 victory over Wagner (2/26/11) in its 2010-11 reg ular-season finale, Robert Morris broke its own school and Northeast Conference record for victories over a five-year span. The Colonials had compiled 105 wins from 2005 to 2010 but ended the 2010-11 season with 108 victories since the beginning of the 2006-07 campaign. In addition, RMU’s 58 wins in the league over the last four years is a school and league record, while the Colonials have amassed 116 victories in the NEC since the beginning of the 2001-02 campaign, the most in the league in the last 10 seasons. The CW Network - One Colonial who could break out for Robert Morris in 2011-12 is redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams, arguably the purest shooter on the roster and one of the best in the Northeast Conference. Over the final six games of the 201011 season, Williams averaged 15.5 points while shooting 64.7 percent (33-for-51) from the floor, including 68 percent (17-for-25) from long range. Williams exploded for a career-high 26 points in a 66-49 victory over Wagner (2/24/11) in RMU’s 2010-11 regular-season finale, which tied the Robert Morris freshman single-game record for points. All-time leading scorer Myron Walker (1990-94) also finished with 26 points in a 99-71 victory over Mount St. Mary’s (1/24/91) at the Sewall Center. Liftoff With Lijah - While redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams supplied Robert Morris with offensive punch down the stretch of the 2010-11 campaign, arguably the one Colonial who advanced the farthest throughout the course of the year was junior forward Lijah Thompson. From the beginning of February through the end of the year, a stretch in with the Colonials went 9-2 (.818), Thompson averaged 11.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 58 percent (47-for-81) from the field and 75.5 percent (37-for-49) at the charity stripe. MTV VJ - Velton Jones provided Robert Morris with inspired play throughout the course of his sophomore season, but at no time was that more evident than down the stretch of the 2010-11 campaign. Jones reached double figures in scoring in 15 of his last 17 contests, averaging 14.9 points over that span while shooting 42.9 percent (75-for-175) from the floor and also producing averages of 4.4 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. The Rock - The only Colonial to start all 32 games for Robert Morris in 2010-11, junior guard Velton Jones enters the 2011-12 season with the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 67 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 52 straight starts. He also enters the 2011-12 season opener against Rider Friday having reached double figures in scoring in six straight games. Jones owns 62 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 27. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 67 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, having appeared in 44 consecutive games. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 69-10 (.873) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 66-8 (.692) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s first season as head cocah in 2010-11, RMU posted a record of 14-4 (.778) when outrebounding its opponent.

Did You Know? Redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams is the fourth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the Northeast Conference in three-point field goal percentage against league foes. Williams, who shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from long range in 2010-11 against the NEC, joins former Colonials Aaron Thomas, Derek Coleman and Jimmy Langhurst. Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04 against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent (51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurst paced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).

2010-11 RMU Basketball

The Dish Network - Sophomore guard Anthony Myers provides the Colonials with depth at the point guard position and is coming off a record-breaking freshman campaign. Myers finished the 2010-11 with 116 assists, establishing an RMU freshman record in the category. He broke the old mark of 106 that was set by former guard Samba Johnson (1992-94) in 1992-93. Myers ranked 11th in the Northeast Conference last year in assists per game (3.63) and seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.87). Two Pair - Guards Velton Jones and Anthony Myers joined a select group of players in school history last season thanks to the ability of the duo to create for their teammates. Jones and Myers became the fourth pair of teammates to each eclipse 100 assists on the year and the first since former Colonials Derek Coleman (2003-07) and Tony Lee (2004-08) combined for 275 dimes during the 2006-07 campaign. Jones recorded a team-high 127 assists in 2010-11, while Myers finished with 116, an RMU freshman record. Jones enters the 2011-12 campaign with 226 career assists, which ranks third among active players in the Northeast Conference. In The Clutch - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones came through with one of the biggest shots of his career in a 64-62 victory @ No. 2 seed Quinnipiac (3/6/11) in the semifinals of the 2011 NEC Tournament, hitting a jumper with 4.3 seconds to play to give the Colonials the victory. Jones, who finished with 13 points, eight assists and three steals in the win over the Bobcats, added his name to a pantheon of greats at RMU that has sank a game-winning shot in final 15 seconds of a game. Locked In - For the sixth time this season Robert Morris shot 50 percent or better from the field in a 78-74 win over No. 6 seed Wagner (3/3/11), as the Colonials converted 52.2 percent (24-for-46) of their attempts from the floor. RMU is 6-0 so far this season when it shoots 50 percent or better from the floor and has now won 21 straight games when accomplishing the feat. The last loss for Robert Morris when shooting better than 50 percent came in a 92-72 loss @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47). RMU has also won 30 straight games against Northeast Conference foes when turning the trick, with its last loss an 88-86 setback @ Central Connecticut State (2/22/07) when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (35-for-61). The Comeback Kids - Robert Morris has shown a penchant this season for being able to climb out of large deficits, proving no lead is safe for its opponent. In a 54-51 win over St. Francis (N.Y.) (1/22/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, the Colonials trailed by 10 in the first half, 24-14, before posting a three-point triumph. It marked the fourth time this season RMU has trailed by double digits only to earn a victory. Robert Morris trailed by 13 in the first half before earning a 69-63 win over Duquesne (11/19/10) and also faced a 13-point deficit in the first half before posting a 79-76 overtime victory @ Ohio (1/2/11). The Colonials also trailed by 10 in the first half against Monmouth (1/15/11) before rebounding to post a 60-57 win at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

2010-11 RMU Basketball

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 25 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.14 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.00 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
