The Colonials opened their 2013-14 campaign with an 86-66 victory over Savannah State (11/9/13) at the Charles L. Sewall Center as senior guard Karvel Anderson scored 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to help lead RMU to the win. Senior forward Mike McFadden added 12 points and nine rebounds against the Tigers, while junior guard Charles Oliver came off the bench to supply 12 points. Thanks to the win over Savannah State, Robert Morris improved to 20-18 (.526) all-time in season openers.

RMU’s tilt against the Leopards begins a stretch in which the Colonials will play 14 of their next 17 games on the road. Robert Morris will take part in the Keightley Classic after squaring off with Lafayette Tuesday, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. tip @ Eastern Michigan Thursday, Nov. 14.

Quick Stat of the Night - Senior guard Karvel Anderson picked up right where he left off last season in RMU’s season opener against Savannah State (11/9/13), scoring 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half of an 86-66 victory over the Tigers at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Anderson shot 7-for-12 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, in producing his sixth career contest eclipsing the 20-point plateau. In Anderson’s two seasons in a Robert Morris uniform, the Colonials own a perfect 6-0 record when he scores at least 20 points in a game as well as a 4-0 mark when he connects for at least five three-pointers in a contest. As a team, RMU finished 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) from beyond the arc against SSU to improve to 24-3 (.889) in four seasons under head coach Andrew Toole when hitting at least 10 three-poiners in a game.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Fourth Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2013-14 campaign marks his fourth season as head coach of the Colonials.

Toole signed a three-year contract extension at Robert Morris May 3, 2013, meaning he will lead the Colonials through the 2017-18 campaign. In four seasons under Toole’s tutelage, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 69-36 (.657), including a mark of 39-15 (.722) against Northeast Conference opponents.

In 2012-13, Toole led RMU to an overall record of 24-11 (.686). The Colonials claimed their 10th NEC regular-season championship with a ledger of 14-4 (.778), helping Robert Morris earn its fifth postseason appearance in the last six years. RMU earned a spot in the 2013 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), advancing to the second round thanks to a 59-57 victory over Kentucky (3/19/13) in front of 3,444 fans at the Charles L. Sewall Center, the largest crowd in school history. In the second round, the Colonials dropped a 77-68 decision at Providence (3/25/13).

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole guided RMU to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of 12-6 (.667) in the NEC. The Colonials advanced to the championship game of the NEC Tournament, falling three minutes shy of earning its third straight title before falling in overtime at LIU Brooklyn, 85-82.

The following season in 2011-12, Robert Morris posted an overall record of 26-11 (.703), including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC. RMU tied a school record for victories, advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game and earned its inaugural berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). In the 2012 CIT, the Colonials advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road wins at Indiana State and Toledo, marking the program’s first victories in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Overall, Toole has been at Robert Morris six seasons. He spent the 2007-08 campaign as an assistant under former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10) before being elevated to Associate Head Coach for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. He is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last six years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 141-67 (.678), with the 141 victories both a school and NEC record for a six-year span. RMU’s 141 wins over the last six years is tied with Davidson for eighth among mid-major programs over that span, and the Colonials also own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

While RMU's overall success is apparent, the program's accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last six years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 85-23 (.787) against league opposition, having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008, 2009 and 2013 and shared the title in 2010 with Quinnipiac.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the NIT, dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning its sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J., serving as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic and Rebounds, a 28,000-square foot facility where high school players focus on development.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, and the couple resides in the Pittsburgh, Pa., suburb of Mt. Lebanon with their son, Ryan.

Big Mac - There may not be another member of the 2013-14 Robert Morris roster playing with more confidence right now than senior forward Mike McFadden. In an 86-66 win over Savannah State (11/9/13), McFadden supplied 12 points and nine rebounds, missing his second career double-double by just a carom. McFadden, who hit a pair of free throws with 8.7 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to arguably their biggest win in school history in the first round of the 2013 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) with a 59-57 win over Kentucky, enters Tuesday’s game @ Lafayette with career totals of 655 points and 309 rebounds. He also owns a career shooting percentage of .523 (258-for-493), which ranks sixth all-time at RMU. In 61 career games with the Colonials, however, McFadden’s career field goal percentage is 55 percent (202-for-367).

Chicks Dig The Long Ball - Robert Morris enters the 2013-14 campaign coming off a recordbreaking season in its shooting from beyond the arc. The Colonials finished the 2012-13 campaign having established new single-season records in both three-point field goals (300) and three-point field goals attempted (788). RMU also led the Northeast Conference in both three-point field goals made (8.57 per game) and three-point field goal percentage (.381). The Colonials picked up right where they left off in the 2013-14 season opener against Savannah State, finishing 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) from deep against the Tigers.

Chuck Norris - While senior guard Karvel Anderson supplied the Colonials with five threepointers in their 2013-14 season opener against Savannah State (11/9/13), junior guard Charles Oliver provided a spark off the bench in RMU’s 86-66 victory. Oliver finished with 12 points in 13 minutes of action, hitting three of his five shots from the floor, including 2-of4 from deep, and also going 4-for-6 at the free-throw line. Also known as “Chuck”, Oliver will supply Robert Morris with depth in regard to its three-point shooting this season. Last year at Lakeland Community College, Oliver shot 44.9 percent (62-for-138) from international waters and 51.8 percent (172-for-332) overall.

Hawkeye - Entering the 2013-14 season, the Colonial that owns the longest streak of consecutive games played is sophomore forward Stephan Hawkins. One of just two players to appear in all 35 games in 2012-13, Hawkins supplied Robert Morris with averages 2.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 45.7 percent (32-for-70) from the field.

Hawkins led RMU in blocks last season with 25, an average of 0.71 per game that ranked 12th in the Northeast Conference. He will appear in his 37th consecutive game Tuesday at Lafayette.

On The Offensive - Robert Morris enters the 2013-14 campaign with an impressive streak intact, as the Colonials have won 35 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the field dating back to the 2008-09 season. The last loss for RMU when hitting at least half its shots came in a 92-72 setback @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47). Under fourth-year head coach Andrew Toole, RMU is a perfect 20-0 when turning the trick. Broken down, Robert Morris was 7-0 in both 2011-12 and 2012-13 when converting at least 50 percent of its shots from the floor and 6-0 in Toole’s first season as head coach in 2010-11.

Ant Marching - Senior guard Anthony Myers-Pate takes the reigns as the facilitator of RMU’s offense in his final season of eligibility in 2013-14. Over the last four seasons, Myers-Pate has appeared in 102 career games, including 23 starting assignments. In 32 contests in 2012-13, Myers-Pate dished out 88 assists, an average of 2.75 per game that ranked second for the Colonials. Myers-Pate, who established an RMU freshman record for assists with 116 in 2010-11, is the program’s active leader in assists (321) and steals (110), ranking 12th all-time at Robert Morris in career dimes. He needs just 17 assists to crack the top 10 all-time and also owns a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.84.

The Clibanoff Special - What did forward Lucky Jones have in common in 2012-13 with Otto Porter of Georgetown, Doug McDermott of Creighton and Christian Watford of Indiana?

The quartet were the only four players in NCAA Division I on the year to connect for at least 40 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc (minimum 40 attempts), grab a rebound every five minutes and get to the free-throw line an average of once every seven minutes.

In 2012-13, Jones converted 42.7 percent (44-for-103) of his attempts from deep and grabbed 203 rebounds in 955 minutes, an average of one every 4.7 minutes. Jones was also RMU’s top free-throw shooter, converting 82.2 percent (125-for-152) of his attempts at the chalk while averaging a free-throw attempt every 6.3 minutes. THE GREATEST COMEBACK ...

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (2007-09) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

WE’RE STREAKING Thanks to an 83-79 overtime victory over Wagner (2/9/13), RMU stretched its run of consecutive winning seasons to eight, the longest streak in school history. Since the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials own an overall record of 172-92 (.651), including a mark of 104-40 (.722) in the Northeast Conference.

It marks the fourth time in the last six seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2011-12. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. On the 2011-12 season, RMU averaged 8.32 steals per contest to pace the NEC.

Scouting the Leopards - Lafayette opened its 2013-14 season with a 75-59 setback @ Villanova (11/8/13), and Tuesday’s game against Robert Morris marks the home opener for the Leopards. Lafayette enters the contest having won five straight at the Kirby Sports Center dating back to the 2012-13 season and was picked to finish second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, trailing only new member Boston University. Against the Wildcats, junior guard Seth Hinrichs led the Leopards with 15 points, while junior guard Joey Ptasinski contributed 13 points off the bench. Lafayette owns an all-time record of 27-18 (.600) against members of the Northeast Conference, and in addition to the Colonials the Leopards will also square off with Wagner, Sacred Heart and St. Francis Brooklyn of the NEC in 2013-14.

Lafayette Head Coach - The all-time winningest coach in Lafayette and Patriot League history, Fran O’Hanlon (Villanova ’70) in his 19th season as the head coach of the Leopards. He owns an overall record of 258-276 (.483). O’Hanlon is also the longest-tenured coach in Patriot League history and has led the Leopards to a pair of NCAA Tournaments (1999, 2000).

RMU’s Last Game - Senior guard Karvel Anderson scored 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as Robert Morris opened its 2013-14 season Saturday with an 86-66 victory over Savannah State at the Charles L. Sewall Center. RMU improved to 20-18 (.526) all-time in season openers thanks to the win, including 16-2 (.889) in season lidlifters at home. Leading by three, 34-31, at halftime, the Colonials took control with a 14-6 run midway through the second half that turned a 47-45 RMU edge into a 63-51 advantage with 9:39 to play. Anderson scored 10 straight points during the surge to bolster Robert Morris. Senior forward Mike McFadden gave the Colonials a 70-59 advantage with 5:33 to play, and the Tigers were never able to trim their deficit into double digits the rest of the contest. Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, combining to shoot just 35.6 percent (21-for-59) from the field.

The opening stanza featured five ties and six lead changes, with neither team owning an advantage larger than six points. Patrick Hendley gave Savannah State a 24-20 lead with 6:47 to go before intermission, but an 8-0 surge that featured five points from junior guard Charles Oliver and a three-pointer by junior guard Desjuan Newton helped Robert Morris grab a 2824 advantage. Deven Williams would hit a three-pointer to pull SSU within 28-27, but a 5-0 spurt that featured four points from sophomore forward Aaron Tate, including a dunk, gave the Colonials a 33-27 edge. The Colonials eventually entered the break on top, 34-31, and junior forward Lucky Jones opened the scoring in the second half by converting a pair of free throws to push RMU's cushion to 36-31. On three occasions in the first six and-a-half minutes of the second half Savannah State closed to within two until Robert Morris used its run fueled

by Anderson to take charge. Anderson converted seven of his 12 shots from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, and was also 2-for-2 at the free-throw line, to lead all scorers with 21 points. He also added six rebounds. McFadden added 12 points and nine rebounds for RMU, while Oliver contributed 12 points and four rebounds off the bench. The Tigers were led by Joshua Montgomery, who finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. RMU's 86 points were the most its scored in a season opener since posting a 96-72 victory over Florida International at the Sewall Center Nov. 13, 2006.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Since the beginning of the 200708 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 109-21 (.838) when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 58-14 (.806) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the program in 2013-14. In Toole’s 105 games on the sidelines, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 72 contests, an amazing 68.6 percent of the time. Included in those 72 contests are 32 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with Robert Morris owning an astounding mark of 31-1 (.969) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 58-53 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 30 straight when turning the trick.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 28 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris has become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2003-04 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.23 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn (7.06). Guard Karvel Anderson paced Robert Morris by draining 82 three-pointers in 2012-13, a total that ranks sixth in the RMU single-season record book.
