Penn Tidbits - Robert Morris slipped to 20-21 (.488) all-time in season openers with its setback to the Quakers, including 3-4 (.429) under seventh-year head coach Andrew Toole ... RMU shot just 25 percent (8-for-32) in the first half and 29.3 percent (17-for-58) overall ... Senior guard Kavon Stewart tied a career high with seven rebounds ... RMU’s frontcourt of forwards Aaron Tate, Billy Giles and Roberto Mantovani and freshman center Braden Burke combined to shoot an even 50 percent (8-for-16) from the floor ... The rest of RMU’s lineup converted just 21.4 (9-for-42) of its shots. The Floor General - Senior guard Kavon Stewart dished out four assists in RMU’s 2016-17 season opener against Penn (11/11/16) and in the process took over sole possession of 10th place in the RMU career record book for dimes. Stewart owns 389 career assists and needs 46 to move into ninth place. Stewart would need to average 5.6 assists per game over RMU’s final 30 games of the 2016-17 regular season to become the program’s alltime leader in dimes. The RMU career school record of 555 assists was established by former guard Forest Grant from 1980 to 1984. Still Of The Night - Sophomore guard Isaiah Still was a consistent presence on offense for Robert Morris during the stretch run of the 2015-16 campaign and continued that trend against Penn (11/11/16) in the 2016-17 season opener. Thanks to a team-high 15 points, Still has now reached double figures in each of his last nine games dating back to last season. During that span, Still has produced averages of 16.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest. Where Still really has excelled is at the free-throw line. Over his last eight games, Still has converted 75.4 percent (46-for-61) of his attempts at the stripe, averaging 6.8 trips to the line per game. Good Point - Senior guard Kavon Stewart entered the 2016-17 season as RMU’s active leading scorer and enters Sunday’s game @ DePaul with 645 points. The total is the lowest career total by a student-athlete entering a season since 2005-06, when former point guard Derek Coleman (2003-07) was the program’s active career leader in points with 339. Stewart has a shot at joining the RMU 1,000-Point Club in his final season of eligibility in 201617. Stewart needs to average 11.8 points per game over RMU’s final 30 games of the season to become the 25th member of the club. Did You Know? In six seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris has compiled a record of 71-26 (.732) when scoring at least 70 points in a game. Included in that record is a mark of 28-3 (.903) when eclipsing the 80-point plateau. Billy The Kid - Billy Giles became just the fourth student-athlete in program history to shoot at least 60 percent from the field in a season in 2015-16, as the forward led the Northeast Conference in field goal percentage at 60.6 percent (120-for-198). Giles was able to top the league in field goal percentage on the strength of a great final month, as he averaged 13.9 points and 5.9 rebounds in eight games during the month of February while shooting a white hot 71.4 percent (50-for-70) from the field. Giles’ field goal percentage in 201516 ranks third in the RMU single-season record book and is the highest mark since former forward Steve Napper (1993-98) shot 66.2 percent (96-for-145) from the floor in 199798, a mark that stands as the school record. Thievery - In his rookie campaign in 2015-16, guard Matty McConnell led the Colonials in steals with 57, the second highest total by a freshman in program history. McConnell finished the year averaging 1.97 steals per contest, a mark that led the Northeast Conference. He became the sixth player from Robert Morris to pace the circuit in steals in league history and was bolstered by averaging 2.39 thefts per contest in 18 games against NEC foes, which also led the conference. McConnell also supplied the Colonials with averages of 6.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game in 2015-16. Jersey Strong - Kavon Stewart entered his final season of eligibility in 2016-17 as RMU’s active leader in assists and steals and owns career totals of 389 dimes and 145 thefts. In 2015-16, Stewart ranked fourth in the Northeast Conference in both assists (4.68 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.46) while tying for third in the circuit in steals (1.77 per contest) with Martin Hermannsson of LIU Brooklyn. Stewart will have a chance to finish in the top 10 at Robert Morris in career steals, as he is 16 thefts shy of moving into a tie for 10th with former guard Brandon Jackson, who concluded his career with 161 steals from 1977 to 1981. Firestarter - For the third consecutive year head coach Andrew Toole started a true freshman in the first game of a season, as forward/center Braden Burke got the call against Penn (11/11/16). Burke is the eighth true freshman to earn a start in his collegiate debut in the program’s 41-year Division I history. Burke joins Yann Charles (2010), Elijah Minnie (2014) and Matty McConnell (2015) to earn starts in their first collegiate game under Toole. Also earning starts in their first collegiate games were Forest Grant (1980), Keith Jones (1995), Jeremy Chappell (2005) and Jonathan Clark (2005). Start Me Up - Head coach Andrew Toole, who is in his seventh year at the helm of the Colonials in 2016-17, employed 10 different starting lineups in 2015-16. Toole, who has won 120 games in his first six seasons as head coach at Robert Morris, has used 53 different starting lineups during his tenure. That equates to an average of 2.26 victories per starting five. In his seven seasons on the sideline, Toole has used an average of 8.7 starting lineups per year. Surf Board - The Colonials should be bolstered by the return of forward Aaron Tate in 2016-17, especially on the glass. Tate appeared in RMU’s first three games of the 2015-16 campaign before being shut down with a season-ending injury and is the program’s active career leader in rebounds with 319. He has an outside chance to join the 500-Rebound Club in his final season of eligibility. Tate led the Colonials with eight rebounds in RMU’s 2016-17 season opener against Penn and needs to average 6.0 caroms per contest over RMU’s final 30 games of the regular season to become the 18th member of the club. Steal City - Robert Morris has consistently been at the top of the Northeast Conference leaderboard in steals throughout head coach Andrew Toole’s tenure, as the Colonials have topped the circuit four times (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016) under Toole and six times in the last nine years. In 2015-16, RMU averaged 8.28 thefts per contest to pace the circuit. Each of RMU’s top two pick pockets return in 2016-17, as guard Matty McConnell paced the NEC last season with an average of 1.97 per game, while guard Kavon Stewart tied for third at 1.77 thefts per contest. Protect This House - Robert Morris is playing its 32nd season at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2016-17, and overall the Colonials own a record of 273-143 (.656) in the building. Since 2005-06, RMU has posted a record of 120-41 (.745) at the Sewall Center and in six seasons at “The Chuck” under head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris has compiled a record of 61-26 (.701). A Legend Is Born - Forward Conrad Stephens, a walk-on who earned a scholarship in his final year of eligibility in 2016-17, gave the Colonials a spark in a 64-58 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (1/16/16) in the most significant playing time of his career. Across six career games entering RMU’s tilt against FDU, Stephens had seen time on the court for all of 14 minutes. In 21 minutes against the Knights, Stephens supplied 13 points and six rebounds, converting each of his six attempts from the field while going 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. Stephens became the fifth player in school history to produce a perfect shooting night at the Charles L. Sewall Center, including the third under sixth-year head coach Andrew Toole. A closer look ... Comeback Kids - Robert Morris has made a habit of climbing out of double-digit deficits under Andrew Toole, and that bore fruit in a 64-58 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (1/16/16). The Colonials trailed the Knights, 26-13, with 6:13 to go in the first half before trimming their deficit to three at the break, 29-26. FDU stretched its lead to seven early in the second half, 36-29, before RMU surged back to grab the win. It marked the 22nd time under Toole the Colonials have erased a double-digit deficit in his six seasons as head. On 20 of those occasions Robert Morris has earned a victory.

Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last nine seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top four totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while LIU Brooklyn defeated Wagner, 127-77, Feb. 11, 1998. In 18 games as a freshman, McConnell finished with 43 thefts, an average of 2.39 per game. McConnell follows in the footsteps of guard Kavon Stewart, who recorded 33 steals in 18 league games in 2014-15, tying for league-high honors against league opposition with an average of 1.83 steals per contest. In 17 league games against the NEC in 2015-16, Stewart finished with 38 steals, an average of 2.24 per contest that ranked second in the NEC. As a team, Robert Morris paced the circuit in steals with an average of 8.94 per game.

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the Robert Morris basketball program since 2007-08 is defense. Despite a 67-50 loss to Penn (11/11/16) in the 2016-17 season opener at the Charles L. Sewall Center, the Colonials own a record of 146-38 (.793) over the last nine seasons when holding their opponent to under 70 points. Under Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a mark of 93-30 (.756) when turning the trick. Overall in the last nine years, RMU has held its opponent to under 70 points 59 percent (184-of-312) of the time. Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for RMU over the last nine seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of 2007-08, Robert Morris owns a record of 135-24 (.849) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 129-20 (.866) mark when outrebounding their opponent. Free Is For Me - Robert Morris went to the free-throw line a season-high 35 times in a 73-63 victory @ Sacred Heart (2/25/16), converting a season-high 24 (68.6 percent). Getting to the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game is a good sign for the Colonials. RMU owns a record of 20-9 (.690) under head coach Andrew Toole when visiting the chalk at least 30 times in a contest. On The Offensive - Robert Morris snapped a three-game losing streak with an 89-71 victory over Bryant (2/6/16) and in the process shot a season-high 55 percent (33-for60) from the field, including 64 percent (16-for-25) in the first half. In six seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, RMU owns a mark of 34-5 (.872) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field, including a mark of 26-1 (.963) against NEC opponents. Broken down against league foes, Robert Morris is 23-1 (.958) in the regular season and 3-0 in the NEC Tournament when converting at least half of its shots. Against non-conference opponents under Toole, RMU is 8-4 (.667) when turning the trick. The Anatomy Of Overtime - Robert Morris went to overtime for the ninth time under head coach Andrew Toole in an 81-71 setback @ New Mexico State (11/24/15). The loss snapped a five-game winning streak under Toole when heading to the extra frame, as RMU’s last overtime loss came in an 85-82 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11) in the 2011 NEC Tournament final. Under Toole, Robert Morris is 6-3 (.667) in overtime, including 3-3 (.500) on the road. Onions - Isaiah Still wasted no time coming through in the clutch for Robert Morris in his rookie season, as the freshman guard drilled a three-pointer from the wing with 8.6 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, 67-67, and send the Colonials to overtime @ New Mexico State (11/24/15). RMU eventually fell to the Aggies in the extra frame, 81-71, but it marks the second straight year a true freshman sent a game to overtime with a clutch three-pointer. In 2014-15, former guard Marcquise Reed (2014-15) hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation @ Mount St. Mary’s (1/22/15) in an eventual 63-59 victory. In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 53-52 victory over Central Connecticut (2/14/15) at the Charles L. Sewall Center that wrapped up a two-game homestand, forward Aaron Tate became the latest member of the Colonials to hit a buzzer beater for RMU. Tate scored on a tip-in as time expired to help lift Robert Morris to the win. The RMU Ring of Honor Devised in the summer of 2013, the Robert Morris Ring of Honor was created to honor the very best of the program in its Division I history. In order to be eligible for the Robert Morris Ring of Honor, a former student-athlete who played basketball with the Colonials must meet at least four of the following five criteria … • RMU Athletic Hall of Fame member • RMU career statistical leader in any category (minimum 5 years) • Named conference player of the year at least once • Earned all-conference first team honors at least once • Member of conference regular season or tournament championship team that advanced to a national postseason tournament The first member to join the Robert Morris Ring of Honor is Chipper Harris, who played guard for the Colonials from 1980 to 1984 and had his banner raised in the rafters at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014. A 1995 inductee into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame and a native of New Kensington, Pa., Harris served as the program’s all-time leading scorer from the conclusion of his career in 1984 until 1994 with 1,940 points and currently ranks second all-time behind former guard Myron Walker (1990-94). Harris averaged 16.4 points per game over his four-year career, shooting 51.4 percent (821-for-1,598) from the field and 78.9 percent (300-for-380) at the free-throw line. RMU’s all-time leader in career steals with 450, he also compiled career totals of 405 rebounds, 436 assists and 21 blocks. Harris helped guide the Colonials to their first two NCAA Tournament trips in 1982 and 1983 as Robert Morris claimed the first two ECAC Metro Conference Tournament championships. In 1984, he was named the ECAC Metro Conference Player of the Year, sharing the honor with Robert Jackson of St. Francis Brooklyn and Carey Scurry of LIU Brooklyn.

The Charles L. Sewall Center aka “The Chuck” The 2016-17 campaign marks the 32nd season Robert Morris will play its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of six times in the last 30 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009. The 2009 NEC Tournament men’s basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. Robert Morris Historical Tidbits In The Beginning - Robert Morris was the first institution to jump directly from the junior college ranks to NCAA Division I. RMU played basketball at the junior college level for 13 seasons from 1963 to 1976, posting a record of 287-58 (.832) under head coach Gus Krop. Krop led the Colonials to a record of 30-1 (.968) in 1968-69 in its sixth season as a junior college program, with its only loss a 79-76 setback to Paducah (Ky.) in the national title game. In his time leading Robert Morris, Krop coached nine All-Americans and also recruited Earl Cureton, a native of Detroit, Mich., who played one season with the Colonials when it was a junior college program (1975-76) as well as the first season of Division I basketball in 1976-77. Half A Century - The 2016-17 campaign marks the 54th season of intercollegiate basketball at Robert Morris. The Colonials compiled an overall record of 287-58 (.832) in 13 years as a junior college program from 1963 to 1976 and since moving to Division I with the 1976-77 campaign have posted an overall record of 581-603 (.491). Combined, Robert Morris posted a record of 816-610 (.572) over its first 50 years as an intercollegiate program from 1963 to 2013. In honor of 50 years of intercollegiate basketball, Robert Morris enshrined the 1981-82 Colonials, the first squad to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 15, 2014.

Charter Member - Robert Morris played independently as a Division I program for five seasons before becoming a charter member of the ECAC Metro Conference in 1981, which changed its name to the Northeast Conference in 1988. The Colonials have won eight NEC Tournament titles, the most in league history, and have also appeared in the NCAA Tournament eight times. Robert Morris has won back-to-back NEC Tournament titles on three occasions, including the first two championships in 1981 and 1982. RMU also claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament titles in 1989 and 1990 and again in 2009 and 2010. Dynamic Duo - Led by guards Chipper Harris (1980-84) and Forest “Bay” Grant (1980-84), Robert Morris claimed the first two ECAC Metro Conference Tournament championships in 1981 and 1982. In four seasons, Harris and Grant combined for career totals of 3,434 points, 869 rebounds, 991 assists and 782 steals. Harris served as RMU’s all-time leading scorer with 1,940 points from the conclusion of his career until 1994 and still owns the Robert Morris career record for steals (450), while Grant is the program’s all-time leader in assists (555). The pair helped the ECAC Metro Conference garner its first victory in the NCAA Tournament, as the Colonials upended Georgia Southern, 64-54, in a play-in game at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1983 NCAA Tournament. Harris was enshrined in the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, followed by Grant in 1996.

The First Superstar - Don Mackey (1963-65) was the only player in junior college history to score over 1,000 points in his two seasons with the program. A native of Homestead, Pa., Mackey finished his two years with the Colonials by scoring 1,034 points, and his 43 points in a 125-111 win over Walsh Jan. 30, 1965, still stands as the most points scored in a game by a player in a Robert Morris uniform. He went on to finish his collegiate career at Gannon University and was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 9, 2010. Mackey is one of nine members of the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame from the junior college ranks, which also includes former All-Americans Perry Johnson (1969), Cleveland Edwards (1969) and Ron Hightower (1971 and 1972).

Walk On The Ocean - Former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) continued RMU’s lineage of stellar guards when he arrived on the scene in the fall of 1990 and was a key part of a 1991-92 squad that claimed the program’s fifth NEC Tournament championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament. In his second year with the program, Walker scored 614 points en route to being named the 1992 NEC Player of the Year, the first sophomore in league history to earn the honor. Walker went on to become the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,965 points and also owns the single-season record for scoring average (20.1 ppg as a senior in 1993-94) and career marks for 20-point scoring games (47) and scoring average (18.7 ppg).

The Twirl - Arguably the best basketball player in school history, in his one season at the Division I level in a Robert Morris uniform Earl “The Twirl” Cureton (1975-77) averaged 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in 1976-77. Cureton still owns Robert Morris single-season records for rebounds (274) and rebounding average and is the only player in the program’s Division I history to average a double-double. He transferred to the University of Detroit to continue his Division I career and was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the third round of the 1979 NBA Draft. He went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA, earning a pair of championship rings, one with the 76ers in 1983 and the other with the Houston Rockets in 1994.

Keep On Rockin ... As part of the Air Force Classic, Robert Morris traveled to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on New Mexico State. The home of the Aggies, the Pan American Center, became the 10th arena that the Colonials have played in that has also featured a concert by Pearl Jam since the band’s formation in 1990. Also included is Time Warner Cable Arena (Charlotte, N.C.), the Verizon Center (Washington, D.C.), Rupp Arena (Lexington, Ky.), the Palace at Auburn Hills (Detroit, Mich.), the Prudential Center (Newark, N.J.), Savage Arena (Toledo, Ohio), the Wolstein Center (Cleveland, Ohio), the Bryce Jordan Center (State College, Pa.) and the A.J. Palumbo Center (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Who Was Robert Morris? Robert Morris, Jr. (January 20, 1734 – May 8, 1806) was a Liverpool-born American merchant and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly, became the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety and was chosen as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, where he served as chairman of the “Secret Committee of Trade” and as a member of the Committee of Correspondence. From 1781 to 1784, he served as the powerful Superintendent of Finance, managing the economy of the fledgling United States. As the central civilian in the government, Morris was, next to General George Washington, “the most powerful man in America.” His successful administration led to the sobriquet, “Financier of the Revolution.” He was one of Pennsylvania’s original pair of U.S. senators, serving from 1789 to 1795. A look at his legacy: - A portrait of Morris appeared on U.S. $1000 notes from 1862 to 1863 - Morris and Roger Sherman were the only two people to sign all three significant founding documents of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. - The dollar sign ("$") was in common use among private merchants during the middle of the 18th century. It referred to the two columns draped with scrolls on the Spanish milled dollar, which predated the U.S. Dollar. Morris was the first to use that symbol in official documents.
