• The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team continues an eight-game road trip to open its 2017-18 season by opening play in the Grand Canyon Classic Monday with a 10:00 p.m. tip against the host Antelopes at GCU Arena in Phoenix, Ariz.

• The Colonials tipped off their 42nd season of Division I basketball with a 95-64 loss @ Ohio State (11/10/17). Junior guard Matty McConnell scored a career-high 22 points, while freshman forward Koby Thomas also scored 22 points.

• Led by eighth-year head coach Andrew Toole, RMU returns two starters and three letterwinners from a 2016-17 squad that finished with an overall record of 14-19 (.424), including a mark of 9-9 (.500) in the Northeast Conference (NEC).

• Robert Morris was tabbed seventh in the 2017 NEC Preseason Coaches Poll, the program’s lowest projection since being picked to finish 10th in 2005. Robert Morris has never been the preseason favorite in the poll despite owning a league-high eight NEC Tournament titles, the last of which came in 2015.

• Junior guard Matty McConnell appeared in all 33 games in 2016-17 as a sophomore, earning 27 starts, and posted averages of 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest while ranking third in the NEC in steals (1.64 per game).

• Sophomore guard Dachon Burke played in all 33 games in 2016-17 as a rookie, finishing third for the Colonials in scoring at 7.6 points per game while grabbing an average of 3.9 rebounds per contest. He ranked sixth in the NEC in steals per game (1.55).

• The Colonials advanced to the semifinals of the NEC Tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 years in 2017. In two games of the 2017 NEC Tournament, Matty McConnell averaged 19.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 52 percent (13-for25) from the floor, including 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from beyond the arc.

• RMU’s contest @ Grand Canyon is part of an eight-game road trip to open the year.

It marks the longest road trip to open a season since the 1993-94 campaign, when the Colonials also opened the year with eight consecutive games away from home. The longest season-opening road trip in school history is nine, which came in 1990-91.

• In eight seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris has posted an overall record of 134-107 (.556), including a mark of 82-42 (.661) against NEC foes. Toole has guided the Colonials to a pair of NEC regular-season crowns (2013, 2014) as well as the 2015 NEC Tournament championship.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Eighth Season • Penn, 2003 • @AndyToole Presiding over the golden age of Robert Morris University men’s basketball is Andrew Toole, who is in his eighth season as the head coach of the Colonials in 2017-18.

Introduced as the eighth head coach in the program’s 42-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, Toole signed a one-year contract extension at RMU January 19, 2017, and will lead the Colonials through the 2020-21 campaign.

In eight seasons under Toole’s tutelage, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 134-107 (.556), including a mark of 82-42 (.661) against Northeast Conference opponents.

Toole has overseen the most successful stretch in school history during his 10-year tenure at Robert Morris. Named an assistant coach under former head coach Mike Rice in 2007, Toole was elevated to associate head coach the following season before taking over the reigns as head coach in 2010.

During Toole's seven seasons as head coach at RMU, the Colonials have claimed two NEC regular-season championships (2013, 2014), appeared in four NEC Tournament championship games (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015) and have made four national postseason appearances. Robert Morris played in its first CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) in 2012, earned automatic bids to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in both 2013 and 2014 and appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

Four of RMU's five victories in a national postseason tournament have come under Toole. In 2011The Toole File 12, his second year as head coach, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703).

Robert Morris tied a school record for victories by advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2012 CIT Birthdate: Sept. 11, 1980 Hometown: Red Bank, N.J. thanks to road wins over Indiana State and Toledo.

Age: 37 In 2012-13, RMU claimed its 10th NEC regular-season championship with a ledger of 14-4 (.778) in conference action and overall finished 24-11 (.686). Robert Morris earned a spot in the Alma Mater / Year: Penn / 2003 Degree: Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) 2013 NIT, advancing to the second round thanks to a landmark 59-57 victory over Kentucky in front High School: Christian Brothers Academy of 3,444 fans at the Charles L. RMU earned its second straight NEC regular-season crown in 2013-14 with a record of 14-2 (.875) in league play and finished 22-14 (.611) overall. For his efforts, Toole was named the 2014 COLLEGIATE COACHING EXPERIENCE: NEC Jim Phelan Coach of the Year. Led by a career-high 38 points from 2014 NEC Player of the Robert Morris University; Moon Township, Pa. - Head Coach (2010- ) Year Karvel Anderson (2012-14), the Colonials notched a win in the first round of the NIT for the Robert Morris University; Moon Township, Pa. second consecutive year with an 89-78 victory at St. John's.

- Associate Head Coach (2008-10) In the history of the NIT, a No. 8 seed has knocked off a No. 1 seed just four times, with Robert Robert Morris University; Moon Township, Pa. Morris owning two of those victories thanks to its wins over Kentucky and St. John's.

- Assistant Coach (2007-08) Toole guided Robert Morris to an overall record of 20-15 (.571) in 2014-15, including a mark Lafayette College; Easton, Pa. of 12-6 (.667) in the NEC. The Colonials finished in a tie for second place with Bryant in the league - Assistant Coach (2006-07) standings and as the No. 2 seed claimed the 2015 NEC Tournament title with a 66-63 win at No. 1 seed St. Francis Brooklyn. The win over the Terriers helped RMU secure its league-high eighth NEC PLAYING EXPERIENCE: Tournament title and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament.

University of Pennsylvania; Philadelphia, Pa. Robert Morris earned its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1983 and second overall in pro- Guard (2000-03) gram history by posting an 81-77 victory over North Florida as part of the 2015 NCAA First Four Elon University; Elon, N.C. at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. Two days later the Colonials fell to eventual 2015 national champion - Guard (1998-2000) Christian Brothers Academy; Lincroft, N.J. Duke, 85-56, in Charlotte, N.C. - Guard (1994-98) In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole guided RMU to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of 12-6 (.667) in the NEC. The Colonials advanced to the championship game of the NEC Tournament, falling three minutes shy of earning their third straight title before falling in overtime at LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Prior to joining the Robert Morris staff in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games.

Toole and his wife, Brooke, were married June 3, 2011, and the couple resides in Pittsburgh, Pa., with their two sons, Ryan and Colin.

It marks just the second time in program history a pair of Colonials eclipsed the 20-point plateau in the first game of the season. In an 85-61 victory over Marshall (12/2/91) to open the 1991-92 campaign, former Colonials Ricky Cannon (24), Myron Walker (20) and Joe Falletta (20) each scored at least 20 points. Combined, McConnell and Thomas shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the field, including 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from beyond the arc. The duo also knocked down five of their six attempts (83.3%) of their attempts at the free-throw line while combining for 11 rebounds and four steals.

Dynamic Debut - Freshman forward Koby Thomas, who tied for game-high honors in scoring with 22 points while also pacing the Colonials in rebounds (6) and steals (2) in RMU’s 2017-18 season opener @ Ohio State (11/10/17), put himself in rarified air in the Robert Morris record book with his performance. The 22 points scored by Thomas are the most points scored by a member of the Colonials in their debut game. The old record was established by former guard Velton Jones (2008-13), who paced Robert Morris with 15 points @ Syracuse (11/11/09). Even more impressive for Thomas was his work on the glass, as five of his six rebounds were of the offensive variety.

Three’s Company - Robert Morris led the Northeast Conference (NEC) in 2016-17 in threepoint field goal defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 29.8 percent (162-for-543) from beyond the arc. That percentage also ranked sixth in NCAA Division I. The Colonials opened the 2017-18 season on a positive note in the same department, holding Ohio State to just 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from deep. Dating back to last season, RMU has held over half (18-of-34) of its opponents to under 30 percent in three-point shooting.

Settling In - Junior guard Matty McConnell established a career high with 22 points in RMU’s 2017-18 opener @ Ohio State (11/10/17) and has reached double figures in each of his last three games dating back to last season. Over that span, McConnell is averaging 20.3 points per contest and is 13-for-21 (61.9%) from beyond the arc. To put that in perspective, McConnell had 11 triples in RMU’s first 17 games of last season.

So, What’s New? Plenty, to be precise. The 2017-18 version of Robert Morris basketball features 11 newcomers, including six freshman, two junior college transfers, two graduate transfers and a transfer. Among RMU’s 11 newcomers is 10 on scholarship, which is tied for second in the NCAA with Little Rock entering the 2017-18 season. The only program with more scholarship newcomers is Pittsburgh, which has 11. The Colonials and Trojans will square off this season in the final game of the Grand Canyon Classic Saturday, Nov. 25.

The Veteran - Junior guard Matty McConnell is the elder statesman for RMU in 2017-18, as he is the program’s active leader in points (459), rebounds (220), assists (116) and steals (113). McConnell also owns the longest streak for consecutive games by a student-athlete at Robert Morris, as he has played in 61 straight contests for the Colonials dating back to his freshman season. A consistent presence on the defensive end, McConnell has averaged 1.79 steals per game in 63 career contests.

Plenty Of Playing Time - Given the number of new faces on the RMU roster in 2017-18, the latest batch of Colonials will have plenty of opportunities to work their way into the rotation. Robert Morris returns a total of 1,611 minutes from last season in junior guard Matty McConnell (854), sophomore guard Dachon Burke (755) and junior forward Seth Rouse (2). Only six programs enter the year with fewer minutes returning from last year, led by Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils return just 386 minutes from last season. RMU is also one of just five programs to feature no seniors on its roster in 2017-18, joining Chattanooga, The Citadel, Holy Cross and Kentucky.

Fit & Fresh - In the history of Robert Morris basketball, a total of 10 true freshman have earned a start in their collegiate debut. Head coach Andrew Toole has added to that list by starting six true freshman in his eight years on the sideline, including Yann Charles (2010), Elijah Minnie (2014), Matty McConnell (2015), Braden Burke (2016), Jon Williams (2017) and Koby Thomas (2017). Also earning starts in their first collegiate games in the history of Robert Morris basketball were Forest Grant (1980), Keith Jones (1995), Jeremy Chappell (2005) and Jonathan Clark (2005). Only twice in program history has two rookies been in the same starting lineup in a season opener.

Williams and Thomas joined Chappell and Clark Friday @ Ohio State (11/10/17).

Good Point - Jon Williams become just the second point guard in program history to earn a start as a true freshman in his Robert Morris debut Friday @ Ohio State (11/10/17). Williams joined Forest Grant (1980-84) as the only point guards in program history to start their first game as a true freshman. Grant concluded his career with 1,494 points and still owns the career record for assists (555). Williams finished with two assists and a rebound in 27 minutes of action in his collegiate debut.

Close Out - Robert Morris, which is one of 19 mid-major programs to average at least 20 wins a year (20.7) over the last 10 years, has used defense as its calling card in the last decade. Six of the top 10 marks for scoring defense in the Robert Morris record book have come since Andrew Toole joined the staff, including three as an assistant coach (2007-10) and the last seven as head coach. The school record for scoring defense came in Toole’s second season as head coach in 2011-12, when the Colonials yielded just 63.5 points per game. Last season, RMU allowed an average of 67.8 points per contest, which ranked second in the Northeast Conference and is tied for 10th alltime in program history.

Defense Wins Championships - Speaking of defense, the numbers bear out that following in the footsteps of defending is victories. Over the last 10 seasons, the Colonials own an overall record of 157-44 (.781) when holding their opponent to under 70 points.

Under Andrew Toole, RMU owns a mark of 104-36 (.743) when turning the trick. Overall in the last 10 years, the Colonials have held their opponent to under 70 points 58.3 percent (201-of-345) of the time.

Close and Late - A common theme in the seven years that head coach Andrew Toole has been at the helm at Robert Morris has been playing close games late. During Toole’s tenure, the Colonials have posted a record of 52-31 (.627) in games decided by five points or less, including a mark of 7-6 (.538) in games decided by a single point.

On The Offensive - Thanks to shooting 51 percent (25-for-49) from the floor in a 7972 win over Sacred Heart (2/25/17) in RMU’s final game at the Charles L. Sewall Center, RMU improved to 37-5 (.881) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field in seven seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, including a mark of 29-1 (.967) against NEC opponents. Broken down against league foes, Robert Morris is 26-1 (.963) in the regular season and 3-0 in the NEC Tournament when converting at least half of its shots.

Steal City - Robert Morris has consistently been at the top of the Northeast Conference leaderboard in steals throughout head coach Andrew Toole’s tenure, as the Colonials have topped the circuit five times (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017) under Toole and seven times in the last 10 years. In 2016-17, RMU posted a league-high average of 7.91 steals per contest. Robert Morris returns two of the top six pick pockets from a year ago, as guard Matty McConnell ranked third in the circuit in steals per game (1.64), while guard Dachon Burke ranked sixth (1.55).

Start Me Up - Head coach Andrew Toole, who is in his eighth year at the helm of the Colonials in 2017-18, employed 10 different starting lineups last season. Toole, who has won 134 games in eight seasons as head coach at Robert Morris, has used 63 different starting lineups during his tenure. That equates to an average of 2.13 victories per starting five. In his eight seasons on the sideline, Toole has used an average of 8.9 starting lineups per year.

Did You Know? In seven seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris has compiled a record of 78-32 (.709) when scoring at least 70 points in a game. Included in that record is a mark of 28-4 (.875) when eclipsing the 80-point plateau.

Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last 11 seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top four totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Series Notes - Monday’s contest featuring Robert Morris and Grand Canyon is the first in the all-time series between the two programs.

- The Antelopes are one of four opponents on RMU’s 2017-18 slate that the Colonials will be facing for the first time in program history this season. Included are all four opponents in the Grand Canyon Classic, which also includes San Diego (11/15), Norfolk State (11/24) and Little Rock (11/25).

- Grand Canyon opened its 2017-18 campaign with a 67-51 victory over Florida A&M (11/10/17) at GCU Arena. The Antelopes were bolstered by a big first half, grabbing a 35-17 lead over the Rattlers at halftime.

- RMU and GCU are on the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to the first month of its 2017-18 schedule. The Colonials open the year with an eight-game road trip, including seven road contests and one neutral-game tilt (Norfolk State). The Antelopes, meanwhile, open the season with seven of their first eight games at home. The other contest is a neutral-site tilt against St. John’s at Talking Stick Resort Arena, which is also in Phoenx, Ariz. The first true road game for Grand Canyon doesn’t come until Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Boise State.

- The Antelopes are under the direction of former NBA All-Star Dan Majerle (Central Michigan ’88), who is in his fifth season as the head coach at Grand Canyon in 2017-18. He owns an overall record of 82-46 (.641). GCU was selected as the 2017 preseason favorite in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), while redshirt senior guard Joshua Braun was tabbed the WAC Preseason Player of the Year.

For the second consecutive year as well as the eighth time in the last 10 seasons, Robert Morris paced the Northeast Conference in steals against league foes, posting an average of 8.44 per contest in 2016-17. In seven years under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials have paced the circuit five times. RMU had three players rank in the top seven in steals per game against league foes, led by guard Matty McConnell, who finished second by posting an average of 2.11 per game. Guard Dachon Burke tied for fourth with Quincy McKnight of Sacred Heart with an average of 1.78 thefts per game, while guard Kavon Stewart ranked seventh at 1.53 steals per contest.

30 Rock - Freshman guard Jon Williams has a familiar teammate in his rookie season at Robert Morris, as his older brother, Josh, is also on the 2017-18 roster. Josh Williams transferred to RMU from Akron in April of 2017 and will sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. The brothers will have the chance to play two seasons together once Josh Williams is eligible for the 2018-19 campaign. In two seasons with the Zips, Josh Williams appeared in 69 games, producing averages of 7.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for RMU over the last 10 seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 140-32 (.814) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 132-27 (.830) mark when outrebounding their opponent.

Free Is For Me - Robert Morris earned a 79-72 victory over Sacred Heart (2/25/17) in the program’s final game at the Charles L. Sewall Center by visiting the free-throw line 32 times, converting 19 (59.4 percent). Getting to the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game is a good sign for the Colonials. RMU owns a record of 26-10 (.722) under head coach Andrew Toole when visiting the chalk at least 30 times in a contest.

Comeback Kids - Robert Morris has made a habit of climbing out of double-digit deficits under Andrew Toole, and that bore fruit in a 79-72 victory over Sacred Heart (2/25/17) in the program’s final game at the Charles L. The RMU Ring of Honor Devised in the summer of 2013, the Robert Morris Ring of Honor was created to honor the very best of the program in its Division I history.

In order to be eligible for the Robert Morris Ring of Honor, a former student-athlete who played basketball with the Colonials must meet at least four of the following five criteria …

• RMU Athletic Hall of Fame member • RMU career statistical leader in any category (minimum 5 years) • Named conference player of the year at least once • Earned all-conference first team honors at least once • Member of conference regular season or tournament championship team that advanced to a national postseason tournament The first member to join the Robert Morris Ring of Honor is Chipper Harris, who played guard for the Colonials from 1980 to 1984 and had his banner raised in the rafters at the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014.

A 1995 inductee into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame and a native of New Kensington, Pa., Harris served as the program’s all-time leading scorer from the conclusion of his career in 1984 until 1994 with 1,940 points and currently ranks second all-time. Harris averaged 16.4 points per game over his career, shooting 51.4 percent (821-for1,598) from the field and 78.9 percent (300-for-380) at the freethrow line. RMU’s all-time leader in career steals with 450, he also compiled career totals of 405 rebounds, 436 assists and 21 blocks.

In a surprise ceremony Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at the Sewall Center, former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) joined the RMU Ring of Honor. The program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,965 points, Walker concluded his career by averaging 18.7 points per game, also a school mark. A 1999 inductee into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame and a native of Aliquippa, Pa., Walker scored at least 20 points in a game 47 times, the most in school history.

Robert Morris Historical Tidbits In The Beginning - Robert Morris was the first institution to jump directly from the junior college ranks to NCAA Division I. RMU played basketball at the junior college level for 13 seasons from 1963 to 1976, posting a record of 287-58 (.832) under head coach Gus Krop. Krop led the Colonials to a record of 30-1 (.968) in 1968-69 in its sixth season as a junior college program, with its only loss a 79-76 setback to Paducah (Ky.) in the national title game. In his time leading Robert Morris, Krop coached nine All-Americans and also recruited Earl Cureton, a native of Detroit, Mich., who played one season with the Colonials when it was a junior college program (197576) as well as the first season of Division I basketball in 1976-77.

I Can’t Drive 55 - The 2017-18 campaign marks the 55th season of intercollegiate basketball at Robert Morris. The Colonials compiled an overall record of 287-58 (.832) in 13 years as a junior college program from 1963 to 1976 and since moving to Division I with the 1976-77 campaign have posted an overall record of 595-622 (.489). Combined, Robert Morris posted a record of 816-610 (.572) over its first 50 years as an intercollegiate program from 1963 to 2013. In honor of 50 years of intercollegiate basketball, Robert Morris enshrined the 1981-82 Colonials, the first squad to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 15, 2014.

The First Superstar - Don Mackey (1963-65) was the only player in junior college history to score over 1,000 points in his two seasons with the program. A native of Homestead, Pa., Mackey finished his two years with the Colonials by scoring 1,034 points, and his 43 points in a 125-111 win over Walsh Jan. 30, 1965, still stands as the most points scored in a game by a player in a Robert Morris uniform. He went on to finish his collegiate career at Gannon University and was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 9, 2010. Mackey is one of nine members of the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame from the junior college ranks, which also includes former All-Americans Perry Johnson (1969), Cleveland Edwards (1969) and Ron Hightower (1971 and 1972).

The Twirl - Arguably the best basketball player in school history, in his one season at the Division I level in a Robert Morris uniform Earl “The Twirl” Cureton (1975-77) averaged 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in 1976-77. Cureton still owns Robert Morris single-season records for rebounds (274) and rebounding average and is the only player in the program’s Division I history to average a double-double. He transferred to the University of Detroit to continue his Division I career and was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the third round of the 1979 NBA Draft. He went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA, earning a pair of championship rings, one with the 76ers in 1983 and the other with the Houston Rockets in 1994.

Charter Member - Robert Morris played independently as a Division I program for five seasons before becoming a charter member of the ECAC Metro Conference in 1981, which changed its name to the Northeast Conference in 1988. The Colonials have won eight NEC Tournament titles, the most in league history, and have also appeared in the NCAA Tournament eight times. Robert Morris has won back-to-back NEC Tournament titles on three occasions, including the first two championships in 1981 and 1982.

RMU also claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament titles in 1989 and 1990 and again in 2009 and 2010.

Dynamic Duo - Led by guards Chipper Harris (1980-84) and Forest “Bay” Grant (1980-84), Robert Morris claimed the first two ECAC Metro Conference Tournament championships in 1981 and 1982. In four seasons, Harris and Grant combined for career totals of 3,434 points, 869 rebounds, 991 assists and 782 steals. Harris served as RMU’s all-time leading scorer with 1,940 points from the conclusion of his career until 1994 and still owns the Robert Morris career record for steals (450), while Grant is the program’s all-time leader in assists (555). The pair helped the ECAC Metro Conference garner its first victory in the NCAA Tournament, as the Colonials upended Georgia Southern, 64-54, in a play-in game at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1983 NCAA Tournament.

Walk On The Ocean - Former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) continued RMU’s lineage of stellar guards when he arrived on the scene in the fall of 1990 and was a key part of a 1991-92 squad that claimed the program’s fifth NEC Tournament championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament. In his second year with the program, Walker scored 614 points en route to being named the 1992 NEC Player of the Year, the first sophomore in league history to earn the honor. Walker went on to become the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,965 points and also owns the single-season record for scoring average (20.1 ppg as a senior in 1993-94) and career marks for 20-point scoring games (47) and scoring average (18.7 ppg).

Keep On Rockin ... RMU wrapped up the road portion of its 2016-17 nonconference slate @ Virginia (12/17/16), and John Paul Jones Arena became the 14th arena that the Colonials have played in that has also featured a concert by Pearl Jam since the band’s formation in 1990. Who Was Robert Morris?

Robert Morris, Jr. (January 20, 1734 – May 8, 1806) was a Liverpool-born American merchant and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly, became the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety and was chosen as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, where he served as chairman of the “Secret Committee of Trade” and as a member of the Committee of Correspondence. From 1781 to 1784, he served as the powerful Superintendent of Finance, managing the economy of the fledgling United States. As the central civilian in the government, Morris was, next to General George Washington, “the most powerful man in America.” His successful administration led to the sobriquet, “Financier of the Revolution.” He was one of Pennsylvania’s original pair of U.S. senators, serving from 1789 to 1795. A look at his legacy: - A portrait of Morris appeared on U.S. $1000 notes from 1862 to 1863 - Morris and Roger Sherman were the only two people to sign all three significant founding documents of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution.

- The dollar sign ("$") was in common use among private merchants during the middle of the 18th century. It referred to the two columns draped with scrolls on the Spanish milled dollar, which predated the U.S. Dollar. Morris was the first to use that symbol in official documents.

The UPMC Events Center

Robert Morris University announced Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, the construction of the UPMC Events Center, a 140,000-square foot complex for the Colonials NCAA Division I basketball and volleyball teams, which will play in Peoples Court. The UPMC Events Center is the main part of a $50 million project that also includes a student recreation and fitness center on RMU's Moon Township campus.

The UPMC Events Center will bring the Airport Corridor an attractive new venue for public speakers, conventions, expos, concerts, graduation ceremonies and other family entertainment options. It also will host the university's annual convocation and commencement ceremonies, which have outgrown their current location.

RMU has constructed a two-story student recreation and fitness center at the North Athletic Complex, which opened in the fall of 2017. The centerfeatures two indoor intramural basketball courts, a fully-equipped weight room and cardio room, two additional rooms for Pilates and other exercise training, plus men's and women's locker rooms, all for general student use.

As part of a broader strategic collaboration with RMU, UPMC became the exclusive provider of sports medicine to the university's 16 NCAA Division I sports programs, and the UPMC Health Plan will administer the university's employees' health insurance benefits. UPMC already provides health care to RMU students at UPMC MyHealth@School, an on-campus health and wellness center that opened in the fall of 2016.
