A NEW, BUT FAMILIAR VOICE After spending 13 seasons under his father, Charlie Buscaglia enters his first season as head coach of the Colonials. Coach B, as he is respectfully called, has served as the associate head coach for eight seasons under Sal Buscaglia and was an assistant for the five seasons before that. A 2003 graduate of Manhattan College, Coach B has excelled on the recruiting trail during his career, bringing to Moon Township some of the program’s all-time greats, such as Artemis Spanou, Angela Pace, and Sade Logan, among many others.

SENIOR START Senior guard Janee Brown kicked off her final season in a Colonial uniform with a bang, establishing a new careerhigh for points with 19. Brown, who added a team-leading seven assists to her resume, went 4-of-8 from the floor, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 8-of-10 from the stripe. KNOW YOUR ENEMY Robert Morris’ 60-47 victory at Monmouth was the first time since 2013 that the two teams have met. Anna Niki Stamolamprou posted a double-double in the win with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Rebeca Navarro also was in double-figures with 10 points. HIGH EXPECTATIONS Robert Morris was selected to finish second in the NEC this season, according to a poll of the league’s head coaches. The Colonials earned three first place votes and saw senior guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou be named to her second consecutive Preseason All-NEC Team. ON THE ROAD AGAIN RMU’s non-conference schedule features just three home contests and eight games away from The Chuck. Additionally, the road slate takes place in seven different states (Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee) and has a stretch from Nov. 16 to Dec. 1 where the Colonials will play six games outside of Moon Township. CAN I GET AN ENCORE? The Robert Morris senior class of Janee Brown, Rebeca Navarro, and Anna Niki Stamolamprou has helped lead the program to a significant amount of success over their careers. Coming into 2016-17, the Colonials have gone 5840 overall and 38-16 in NEC play during their time in Moon Township, claiming two league tournament crowns, a regular-season championship, and three trips to the NEC Championship Game.
at 45.2 percent last season. She finished 48-106 from behind the arc in 2015-16 and is fifth all-time at Robert Morris shooting .381 on three-point attempts for her career. RECORD-SETTING OPENER RMU set a slew of team records in its 124-59 blowout victory against West Virginia Wesleyan last season. Here’s a look: Previous Record Points 124 106 vs. FDU 2.23.02 Field Goals 49 39 vs Marist 1.13.97 Margin + 65 + 50 vs. Mercyhurst 1985 Rebounds 67 62 vs. Davis & Elkins 12.4.99 Assists 37 27 Three times DECADE OF DOMINANCE From 2005-06 through 2015-16, Robert Morris posted a record of 139-59 (.702) in Northeast Conference play and won four regular season and four tournament titles. The Colonials have gone 202-144 (.584) over that span, reaching the 20-win barrier in six seasons. NATIONALLY KNOWN Robert Morris has played in a national tournament in seven of the last 10 seasons. In 2007 and 2008, the Colonials took part in the NCAA Tournament. A Preseason WNIT berth followed in 2008-09 and a Postseason WNIT in 2009-10. The 2011-12 season ended with the top seed in the Women’s Basketball Invitational before RMU returned to the Big Dance in 2014 and 2016. INSURMOUNTABLE LEAD Robert Morris has never lost a game in which it has held the lead at the end of the second half. The Colonials were 20-0 in such situations last season and 1-0 in the 2016-17 campaign. All-time, RMU is 516-0 when leading at the final whistle.
NEW FACES The Colonials welcome four new freshmen into the fold for 2016-17, Ja’lynn Burton-Jones and Lucia Striešová will play guard for RMU, while Nneka Ezeigbo and Nadège Pluviose both play in the post. The quartet are represented from New Jersey, Quebec, Pennsylvania, and Slovakia. INTERNATIONAL LOVE Five of the 12 players on this season’s team hail from outside the United States. These student-athletes represent three different countries (Greece, Slovakia, Spain) and two Canadian provinces (Ontario, Quebec). PERENNIAL PLAYOFF POTENTIAL Robert Morris has been to the NEC Tournament 11 times over the last 12 seasons. RMU had eight consecutive playoff appearances from 2004-05 through 2011-12, finishing first in three of those seasons, earning the top seed in 2010. BUFFALO’S BEST On Oct. 6, recently retired head coach Sal Buscaglia was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, became the winningest coach in RMU history on Jan. 2, 2016 when the Colonials defeated Sacred Heart, 78-63, in the team’s NEC 2015-16 opener. THE RAIN FROM SPAIN Senior guard Rebeca Navarro, a native of Galicia, Spain, led the Northeast Conference in three-point shooting
WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS?
The “Financier of the American Revolution,” he isn’t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies’ bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded. Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

2016-17 NEC PRESEASON
The Robert Morris University women’s basketball team was selected second in the 2016-17 Northeast Conference (NEC) Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the league at its annual Social Media Day held in Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Barclays Center. This is the fifth time in six seasons that the Colonials have been picked to finish in the top two of the conference. Robert Morris, who received three of the 10 first-place votes, has enjoyed a historic run over the past three seasons, capturing two NEC crowns (2013-14, 2015-16) while appearing in the league’s championship game in all three years. The Colonials finished the 2015-16 campaign with a 20-13 overall record and an 11-7 mark in conference, clinching its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance with a 56-51 victory at top-seeded Sacred Heart in the NEC Championship Game. Senior guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou, a Preseason All-NEC Team selection, is one of four starters returning for RMU. The 2016 NEC Tournament MVP averaged 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a junior, and finished in the league’s top 10 for scoring, assists (110), threepoint field goal percentage (.337), three-point field goals (67), and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.05). Stamolamprou is the program’s all-time leader in three-point field goals (210) and sits seventh on the career scoring list with 1,301 points to her name. Paired with her in the backcourt is fellow fourth-year Rebeca Navarro, who paced the conference in threepoint field goal percentage (.452) last season. Navarro started 18 of the 33 contests, averaging 7.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, and tallied double-figures on 10 different occasions. The Galicia, Spain native also ranked second on the team in three-point makes (48) and free throw percentage (.842). The frontcourt returns a pair of juniors in Megan Smith and Mikalah Mulrain. Smith ranked eighth in the NEC in field goal percentage (.432) and paced the Colonials in rebounding (187, 5.7), while Mulrain finished third in the league in blocked shots (47) and second on the team cleaning the glass (185, 5.6). RMU also brings back four returnees (Nia Adams, Janee Brown, Shakema Dashiell, Jocelynne Jones) that played in over 75 percent of last year’s games and welcomes a quartet of freshmen (Ja’lynn Burton-Jones, Nneka Ezeigbo, Nadège Pluviose, Lucia Striešová) into the fold. 2016-17 NEC Preseason Coaches Poll 1. CHARLIE BUSCAGLIA
Head Coach 14th season at Robert Morris 1st season as head coach Manhattan ‘03 Charlie Buscaglia enters his first season as head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s basketball team at Robert Morris University. Coach B, as he is respectfully called, is no stranger to the Colonials basketball program, however. Last season, the long-time assistant completed his 13th season on the Colonials coaching staff, acting as the associate head coach for the last eight seasons. “Charlie has long been an integral part of the success of our program with increasing responsibilities over the years,” said RMU Director of Athletics Craig Coleman. “We are grateful that we will be able to maintain continuity in the program under Charlie’s leadership to ensure that we will have great success in years to come.” Buscaglia has always believed recruiting is the lifeline of a program. After taking over as recruiting coordinator in 2003, he went in search of the best talent both near and far, connecting with athletes from not only all over the country, but all over the world. “Most people assume you are a great recruiter when you sign great talent. What I have learned over my years as a coach, however, is that recruiting talent – along with a strong work ethic – is what separates one from the others. My mission will always be for my staff to bring in student-athletes that work hard on the court and in the classroom,” said Buscaglia. Coach B’s rundown of All-Northeast Conference players is an impressive list of who’s-who among NEC stars. The all-star cavalcade began with the signing of Sugeiry Monsac in 2004. Monsac was the 2004-05 NEC Player of the Year who went on to play in the Israeli Division I League and was recently inducted into the RMU Athletics Hall of Fame. She was followed by a pair of 2006 All-NEC selections in Psyché Butler and Natasha Summerville. His strong recruiting record received national recognition when his 2006-07 recruiting class was ranked as one of the top50 classes by the Adidas All-Star Report. Buscaglia pulled off another recruiting coup when he signed University of Kentucky recruit Sade Logan in the 2006 recruiting class. Logan, who was a top-20 player coming out of high school, earned NEC Player of the Year honors in 2009 and tied the NCAA Division I record for three-pointers with 126. She finished third in the nation in scoring at 24.7 points per game. Another class of 2006 recruit, Chinata Nesbit, was a two-time All-NEC First Team pick and was twice the NEC Tournament most valuable player. Nesbit is also responsible for the only two triple-doubles in team history. Not as well known when she was recruited out of Monroe College, Angela Pace was a diamond in the rough, using her athleticism to become the only player in NEC history to earn both NEC Player of the Year and NEC Defensive Player of the Year honors. The 5’10” guard is the shortest player in team history to record 500 career rebounds and is now playing professionally in Germany. More recently, Coach B’s recruiting tendrils have gone international with impressive results. Artemis Spanou, a native of Greece, was a two-time NEC Player of the Year and is the team’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. The first rookie of the year winner in team history, she was quickly joined by Italian-native Ashley Ravelli who earned NEC Rookie of the Year honors in 2013. The list doesn’t end there. Anna Niki Stamolamprou was an All-Rookie team selection in 2014 and an All-NEC team selection in 2015 and 2016. Stamolamprou was named the 2016 NEC Tournament MVP after helping RMU to Northeast Conference title in March. Megan Smith and Mikalah Mulrain continued the tradition of freshmen making an immediate impact, joining the growing list of RMU’s all-rookie team selections when they both earned spots on the league’s 2015 squad. Buscaglia came to Robert Morris from Manhattan College, the 2003 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champions and NCAA tournament participant, where he was an assistant from 1998 until 2003. While at Manhattan, Buscaglia focused mainly on recruiting and developing the perimeter players. He signed Rosalee Mason, who averaged a double-double for the Lady Jaspers and finished her career as Manhattan’s all-time leading rebounder and the leading scorer. She is one of the many players Coach B has signed over his career that is still playing professionally in Europe. “The entire Robert Morris community continually strives to fulfill all the needs of its students and student-athletes, which is beneficial to building a winning tradition,” stated Buscaglia. “The University has given me tremendous support in my quest to recruit top student-athletes, which has helped Robert Morris to build a tradition of not only being a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program.” Aside from recruiting, Buscaglia has helped run summer basketball camps and clinics at the University at Buffalo from 1994 until 1998 and was a camp coordinator at Manhattan during his tenure there. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Buscaglia graduated from Manhattan in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in general studies. Buscaglia and his wife, Roseline, currently reside in Moon Township, Pa.
