Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team opens the home portion of its 2012-13 schedule Monday night when it welcomes Bowling Green to the Charles L. Sewall Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip as part of the consolation round of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off. The Colonials are coming off a 61-59 setback @ Xavier (11/17/12), as a pair of free throws from Brad Redford with 37 seconds to play helped lift the Musketeers to the victory. Junior guard Karvel Anderson led RMU with a career-high 17 points, converting seven of his 13 shots from the field, while redshirt senior guard Velton Jones added 15 points, five rebounds and six assists. Monday’s game against the Falcons is part of a doubleheader at the Sewall Center, as Cleveland State will take on Alabama-Huntsville in a 5:00 p.m. tip before RMU hosts BGSU. A doubleheader is also on tap for Tuesday, Nov. 20, as Alabama-Huntsville will face Bowling Green at 5:00 p.m. before Robert Morris hosts Cleveland State at 7:30 p.m.

Quick Stat of the Night - Despite a 61-59 setback @ Xavier (11/17/12), the play of RMU’s two point guards was the best it’s been in the early portion of the 2012-13 season. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones and junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate combined for nine assists against just two turnovers, with Jones finishing with six dimes and two turnovers and Myers-Pate three assists.

So far this season, the duo have combined for an assist-to-turonver ratio of 3.75, as Jones and Myers-Pate have combined for 30 assists against 15 turnovers. Jones is RMU’s active leader in assists with 414, which ranks eighth all-time at Robert Morris, while Myers-Pate owns 236 career dimes. Thanks to his three assists @ Xavier, Myers-Pate moved into a tie for 16th place all-time at Robert Morris in career assists with former Colonial Samba Johnson (1992-94).

Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 45-28 (.616).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 132 team or individual records, with 52 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Head of the Class - Considered by many to be the heart and soul of the Colonials, redshirt senior guard Velton Jones put forth arguably one of the best seasons in school history in 2011-12. In addition to setting both single-season (207) and career records for free throws, Jones broke seven other junior class records. Included in that list are games started (36), points (591), field goals attempted (457), assists (167), free-throws attempted (270) and minutes played (1,096). Jones became the 20th member of the RMU 1,000-point club in 2011-12 when he exploded for 35 points in an 81-73 victory @ Monmouth (1/21/12) and finished the season with 1,259 career points. He enters Monday’s game against Bowling Green ranked 10th all-time at Robert Morris in scoring (1,312 points), just 17 points shy of moving into ninth place.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones finished with 12 assists in RMU’s first two games of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off against Lehigh and Fordham at the Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh last week, helping the redshirt senior guard become the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career dimes. Jones enters Monday’s game against Bowling Green with 414 career assists and needs 142 to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84). On the 2012-13 campaign, Jones owns 21 assists through RMU’s first four games, an average of 5.3 per game.

Velton Jones a Lou Henson Award Candidate - Thanks to one of the best seasons in school history in 2011-12, redshirt senior guard Velton Jones was one of 31 student-athletes named to the CollegeInsider.com 2012-13 Mid-Major Preseason All-America Team as well as a candidate for the Lou Henson Award. Given annually to the top student-athlete from the midmajor ranks, the Lou Henson Award watch features three players from the Northeast Conference. In addition to Jones, LIU Brooklyn’s Julian Boyd and Sacred Heart’s Shane Gibson also made the cut. Jones ranks second among active players in the NEC in assists (414) and fourth in points (1,312).

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Monday’s game against Bowling Green having shot 79.1 percent (68-for-86) at the chalk in its first four games of 2012-13, which ranks third in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way in the early going is an unlikely candidate in Mike McFadden. Last season, the junior forward shot just 52.2 percent (48-for-92) at the stripe, but an increased attention to detail in the offseason has allowed McFadden to flourish this year. Through the first four games of 201213, McFadden has converted 10 of his 12 attempts, a success rate of 83.3 percent. Meanwhile, sophomore forward Lucky Jones has shot 81.3 percent (13-for-16) from the chalk.

A Run At the Record? Despite missing the first three games of the 2012-13 campaign due to a high ankle sprain, redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson entered his final season of eligibility with a chance to become the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Johnson became the 16th member of the Robert Morris 500-rebound club in 2011-12 thanks to eight boards in a 70-56 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.) (2/11/12). He finished second for the Colonials in 2011-12 with 177 rebounds in 31 games, an average of 5.7 per contest. Johnson owns 569 career caroms and is 183 rebounds shy of becoming the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Johnson needs to average 6.8 rebounds in RMU’s remaining 27 regular-season contests to eclispe the mark. Currently, former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08) share the career record of 751 rebounds.

The Race to 1,000 - In addition to Russell Johnson having an opportunity in his final season of eligibility to make a run at becoming the program’s all-time leading rebounder, the redshirt senior forward is also just 123 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000-point club.

Johnson owns 877 career points and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. While Johnson has a good shot of eclipsing 1,000 career points in 2012-13, Coron Williams also has a shot. The redshirt junior guard enters Monday’s game against Bowling Green with 666 career points and would need to average 12.4 points over the course of RMU’s remaining 27 games to join the exclusive fraternity. If the duo accomplish the feat, they would be the 21st and 22nd members, respectively, of the Robert Morris 1,000-point club in school history.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 36-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. Scouting the Falcons - Bowling Green enters Monday’s game against Robert Morris in the consolation round of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off with a record of 1-2 and is coming off an 80-66 setback to IUPUI (11/13/12). The Falcons are led seniors A’uston Calhoun and Jordon Crawford, who have combined to supply 36.7 points per game. Calhoun is averaging 18.7 points per contest and also leads BGSU in rebounding (6.7 rpg), while Crawford has averaged 18.0 points in three games. Against IUPUI, Crawford led Bowling Green with 24 points, while Calhoun added 19 points and six boards. Calhoun scored 30 points in a 79-73 overtime setback to Cleveland State (11/12/12) in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, marking the first BGSU player to score at least 30 points in a game since Martin Samarco went for 43 against Buffalo in 2007.

Bowling Green Head Coach - The 2012-13 campaign marks the sixth season for head coach Louis Orr (Syracuse ’80) at Bowling Green and his 11th season overall. He owns a career record of 177-164 (.519), including a mark of 77-84 (.478) as head coach of the Falcons. Orr led BGSU to an overall record of 16-16 (.500) in 2011-12 and a spot in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. He also led Bowling Green to the NIT and named Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year in 2009.

RMU’s Last Game - Brad Redford's pair of free throws with 37 seconds remaining helped lift Xavier to a 61-59 victory over Robert Morris, Nov. 17, at the Cintas Center. The Colonials had three opportunities in the final 15 seconds for either the game-winning or game-tying shot but came up short each time. Junior Karvel Anderson's three-pointer with 12 seconds left fell short, and after a scramble for the rebound, RMU retained possession thanks to a jump ball. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones followed by missing a jumper in the lane, and a desperation threepoint attempt at the buzzer from redshirt junior guard Coron Williams fell short as time expired. Robert Morris trailed, 43-35, early in the second half after a dunk from Jeff Robinson of Xavier, but the Colonials never went away, closing it to a one-possession game seven times in the final 14:36 of action, including a pair of ties. Robinson would give the Musketeers a 53-47 edge at the 8:19 mark of the second half by hitting the front end of a pair of free-throw attempts, but five straight points from Anderson, including a three-pointer, helped close the Colonials to within one, 53-52, with 7:34 to go. Semaj Christon would follow with four straight points to give Xavier a 57-52 cushion, but a three-pointer from Jones and a jumper by Anderson knotted the game, 57-57, with 3:49 remaining. Again the Musketeers would jump in front, 5957, as Dee Davis fed Robinson for a jumper, but Jones answered with his own jumper to tie the score for the sixth time on the game, 59-59, with just 1:51 to play. Each team had opportunities to take the lead before Redford drew contact by sophomore forward Lucky Jones to send him to the charity stripe for the game-winning free throws. The points proved to be the only contribution on the evening from the Xavier bench. In a game that featured eight lead changes, both teams started off hot shooting, trading the advantage seven times in the opening seven and-a-half minutes. The Musketeers hit eight of their first 10 shots from the field, while RMU connected on five three-pointers, including a trio from Williams.

Mr. Clean - One area that Robert Morris has gotten off to a great start on the 2012-13 season is rebounding the basketball. Through the first four games of the year, the Colonials are averaging 38.3 rebounds per contest, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. RMU has been extremely efficient on the offensive glass, pulling down an average of 13.8 boards per contest. Leading the way has been junior forward Mike McFadden, who is averaging 5.8 rebounds per contest. The Colonials have also received a spark from freshman forward Stephan Hawkins, who despite averaging just 16.3 minutes per game is pulling down an average of 5.3 boards per contest.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 74-58 victory over Fordham (11/13/12) in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 18 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (418) and free-throw attempts (586), it marked the 17th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Monday’s game against Bowling Green leading the Colonials in both free throws (21) and free-throw attempts (26), a success rate of 80.8 percent.

Welcome To Robert Morris - Junior guard Karvel Anderson saw his first action as a Division I student-athlete in RMU’s 2012-13 season opener @ Rider (11/9/12), and in 26 minutes off the bench supplied the Colonials with a game-high 11 points. Anderson is the second active Colonial on the roster to lead Robert Morris scoring in his first Division I game. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones scored a team-high 15 points for RMU in his Division I debut @ Syracuse (11/11/09). Through the first four games of the 2012-13 campaign, Anderson is supplying the Colonials with a 12.3 points per game average after a career-high 17 points @ Xavier (11/17/12).

Double Your Pleasure - Junior forward Mike McFadden registered his first career double-double against Lehigh (11/12/12) in the opening round of the 2012 NIT Season TipOff, leading the Colonials with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. McFadden is the fourth active player on the Robert Morris roster to post a double-double. The current active leader in double-doubles for RMU is redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson, who enters Monday’s game against Bowling Green with five career double-doubles.

Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 37-year history as a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU’s ability to convert from beyond the arc. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams posted a team-high 87 three-pointers in 2011-12, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book. Former Colonial Scott Shepard (1988-91) owns the single-season mark with 93 during his first year with RMU in 1988-89. In 2011-12, Williams became the third player in the last four years to hit at least 80 three-pointers in a season and is also the eighth different Colonial in the last 11 years to post one of the top 10 single-season marks in three-point field goals. Williams enters Monday’s game against Bowling Green with 145 career three-pointers, which currently ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris.

The Comeback Kids - Facing a double-digit deficit under head coach Andrew Toole doesn’t seem to be a problem for Robert Morris. In seven of their last 11 road tilts of the 2011-12 season the Colonials fell behind by double digits but came back to win four of them. In a 67-60 win @ Indiana State (3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CIT, RMU fell behind by 12 in the first half, 21-9, and faced double-digit deficits seven times in the first eight minutes of the second half before roaring back for the victory. The win @ Indiana State marked the ninth time RMU has climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. Included in that stretch is a 15-point deficit in the second half of an 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).

Jones averaged 2.39 thefts per contest, recording at least three steals in eight of RMU’s 16 tilts against league opponents. Jones joins former Colonials Tony Lee (2004-08) and Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) to turn the trick. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in 2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg), while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2 spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). 10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his first double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign in a 74-58 win over Fordham (11/13/12) in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, finishing with 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-7 performance from beyond the arc, and a 1-for-2 showing at the free-throw line. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Monday’s game against Bowling Green with a record of 23-7 (.767) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the RMU roster. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 108 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 102 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and he needs 19 starting assignments to break the school record of 120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 74-58 victory over Fordham (11/13/12) in the NIT Season Tip-Off, Robert Morris owns a record to 90-18 (.833) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 39-11 (.780) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his seocnd season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 73 games on the sidelines over the last two seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 50 contests, an amazing 68.5 percent of the time.

In a 74-58 victory over Fordham (11/13/12) in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Petersen Events Center, Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 18 points. Joining Jones was junior guards Karvel Anderson (16) and Coron Williams (13) and sophomore forward Lucky Jones (15). RMU has had four players reach double figures in scoring a total of 23 times in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, withthe Colonials owning a record of 16-7 (.696) in those contests. Included in that stretch was 13 times in 2011-12, with Robert Morris posting a mark of 9-4 (.692) in those contests.

Long Distance Dialing - Thanks to tying an RMU single-game record for three-pointers with 16 in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament, the Colonials eclipsed 200 three-pointers in 2011-12 and finished the season with 240.

It marks the eighth time in the last nine years that Robert Morris has eclipsed 200 three-pointers in a season. The top two sharpshooters from long range for RMU in 2011-12 were redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who combined for 147 three-pointers. That total is the second highest by an RMU tandem in school history.

Streaker - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones owns the longest double-figure scoring streak by a Colonial on the active roster at 19 games. Jones turned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first 13 games in 2011-12. Over that span, Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest.

The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still near the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.06 threepointers per contest, which ranks second behind St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.09 three-pointers a game. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book.
