Sewall Center Thursday night to continue play in the Keightley Classic by hosting UT Arlington in a 7:00 p.m. tip. The Colonials are coming off an 87-49 loss @ No. 1 Kentucky (11/17/13) to conclude a 1-2 (.333) road trip as senior guard Karvel Anderson paced RMU with 16 points while grabbing five rebounds. Junior guard Desjuan Newton was the only other player to reach double figures for Robert Morris against the Wildcats, scoring all of his career-high 11 points in the second half. The Colonials converted just 23.2 percent (16-for-69) of their shots from the field @ Kentucky, tying a mark for their lowest field goal percentage in the Andrew Toole era. RMU also shot 23.2 percent (16-for-69) in a 64-47 loss @ Memphis (12/29/11). Robert Morris returns to the road after hosting the Mavericks Thursday, opening a four-game road swing and concluding play in the Keightley Classic Saturday, Dec. 23, with a 3:00 p.m. tip @ Cleveland State. The Colonials will also visit Buffalo (Nov. 26), Delaware (Nov. 30) and Youngstown State (Dec. 4) during their road trip before returning home to the Sewall Center to take on Toledo Saturday, Dec. 7.

Quick Stat of the Night - Robert Morris concluded its first road trip of the 2013-14 season with a 1-2 (.333) record, and a return to the friendly confines of the Charles L. Sewall Center should bolster the Colonials. Under fourth-year head coach Andrew Toole, RMU carries a record of 11-1 (.917) in non-conference tilts at “The Chuck” during the regular season. The only loss for Robert Morris in that span is a 62-58 setback to Cleveland State (12/8/11), meaning the Colonials carry a seven-game winning streak into its game Thursday against UT Arlington. A big reason Robert Morris owns that seven-game winning streak has been the play of senior guard Karvel Anderson. In his two years in an RMU uniform, Anderson is averaging 13.2 points in five regularseason non-conference tilts while shooting a staggering 65.7 percent (23-for-35) from the field, including 68 percent (17-for-25) from beyond the arc.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Fourth Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 38-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2013-14 campaign marks his fourth season as head coach of the Colonials.

Toole signed a three-year contract extension at Robert Morris May 3, 2013, meaning he will lead the Colonials through the 2017-18 campaign. In four seasons under Toole’s tutelage, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 70-38 (.648), including a mark of 39-15 (.722) against Northeast Conference opponents.

In 2012-13, Toole led RMU to an overall record of 24-11 (.686). The Colonials claimed their 10th NEC regular-season championship with a ledger of 14-4 (.778), helping Robert Morris earn its fifth postseason appearance in the last six years. RMU earned a spot in the 2013 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), advancing to the second round thanks to a 59-57 victory over Kentucky (3/19/13) in front of 3,444 fans at the Charles L. Sewall Center, the largest crowd in school history. In the second round, the Colonials dropped a 77-68 decision at Providence (3/25/13).

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole guided RMU to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of 12-6 (.667) in the NEC. The Colonials advanced to the championship game of the NEC Tournament, falling three minutes shy of earning its third straight title before falling in overtime at LIU Brooklyn, 85-82.

The following season in 2011-12, Robert Morris posted an overall record of 26-11 (.703), including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC. RMU tied a school record for victories, advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game and earned its inaugural berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). In the 2012 CIT, the Colonials advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road wins at Indiana State and Toledo, marking the program’s first victories in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Overall, Toole has been at Robert Morris six seasons. He spent the 2007-08 campaign as an assistant under former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10) before being elevated to Associate Head Coach for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. He is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last six years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 141-67 (.678), with the 141 victories both a school and NEC record for a six-year span. RMU’s 141 wins over the last six years is tied with Davidson for eighth among mid-major programs over that span, and the Colonials also own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

While RMU's overall success is apparent, the program's accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last six years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 85-23 (.787) against league opposition, having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008, 2009 and 2013 and shared the title in 2010 with Quinnipiac.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the NIT, dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning its sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J., serving as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic and Rebounds, a 28,000-square foot facility where high school players focus on development.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, and the couple resides in the Pittsburgh, Pa., suburb of Mt. Lebanon with their son, Ryan.

A Good Start - Two key areas in which Robert Morris has excelled in the early portion of the 2013-14 campaign in regard to its offense has been on the glass and protecting the basketball. The Colonials enter Thursday’s game against UT Arlington averaging 15.75 offensvie rebounds per game, tops in the Northeast Conference, while also posting a +3.00 turnover margin, which ranks second in the league. So far this season, RMU is averaging 12.2 second-chance points per contest while also averaging 15.5 points off turnovers. The Colonials finished with 18 offensive rebounds @ Kentucky (11/17/13), a season high.

Second Half Surge - Senior guard Karvel Anderson enters Thursday’s game against UT Arlington as part of the Keightley Classic leading RMU in scoring, producing a scoring average of 17.8 points per game. Anderson has scored 71 points in his first four games this season, 57 of which have come in the second half. So far this season after halftime, Anderson is averaging 14.3 points while shooting 48.7 percent (19-for-39) from the field, including 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from deep, and 90 percent (9-for-10) at the free-throw line. In the first half so far this season, Anderson has produced just 3.5 points while shooting 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from the field, including 50 percent (4-for-8) from beyond the arc.

International Waters - Robert Morris is coming off a record-breaking season in shooting from beyond the arc in 2012-13, and the Colonials have picked up right where they left off from a season ago. Through the first four games of the 2013-14 season, RMU has converted 35 of its 93 attempts (37.6 percent) from beyond the arc. While it’s been a balanced attack, senior senior guard Karvel Anderson leads the Colonials with a team-high 14 field goals from beyond the arc. Robert Morris drilled 11 three-pointers in each of its first two games of the 2013-14 campaign, wins over Savannah State (11/9/13) and @ Lafayette (11/12/13), helping the Colonials improve to 25-3 (.893) in four seasons under head coach Andrew Toole when converting at least 10 three-pointers in a contest.

Big Mac - There may not be another member of the 2013-14 Robert Morris roster playing with more confidence right now than senior forward Mike McFadden. In RMU’s first four games of the 2013-14 season, McFadden has averaged 9.5 points and a team-high 4.8 rebounds while shooting 42.9 percent (15-for-35) from the field. McFadden enters Thursday’s tilt against UT Arlington with career totals of 681 points and 319 rebounds. He also owns a career shooting percentage of .518 (270-for-521), which ranks seventh all-time at RMU. In 64 career games with the Colonials after transferring from Iona, however, McFadden’s career field goal percentage is 54.2 percent (214-for-395).

Ant Marching - Senior guard Anthony Myers-Pate may have struggled with his shot in the early going of the 2013-14 season, but it hasn’t curbed his ability to facilitate the offense.

Myers-Pate has dished out 16 assists (4.0 per game) through four contests against just eight turnovers, pushing his career total in dimes to 331. That total is good enough to rank 11th all-time at RMU, and he needs just seven assists to crack the top 10 all-time while also owning a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.84.

Comeback Kids - Robert Morris earned a 90-81 victory @ Lafayette (11/12/13) in its first road game of the 2013-14 campaign by climbing out of an 11-point deficit in the second half. The Colonials fell behind the Leopards, 59-48, with 14:01 remaining before coming back to tie the score, 70-70, and closing the game 15-6 run to earn the win. It marks the 10th time RMU has climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in four seasons under head coach Andrew Toole.

There’s An App For That - Junior guard David Appolon played arguably his best game in an RMU uniform in a 90-81 victory @ Lafayette (11/12/13), contributing a career-high 10 points off the bench while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists.

Appolon hit four of his five shots from the field against the Leopards, including both of his attempts from deep, and ignited RMU’s comeback from an 11-point deficit in the second half. Trailing, 59-48, with 14:01 to play, Appolon scored five consecutive points to help start a 22-11 surge that tied the game, 70-70, with 5:35 to go.

On The Offensive - Robert Morris entered the 2013-14 campaign with an impressive streak intact, as the Colonials have won 35 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the field dating back to the 2008-09 season. The last loss for RMU when hitting at least half its shots came in a 92-72 setback @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47). Under fourth-year head coach Andrew Toole, RMU is a perfect 20-0 when turning the trick.

THE GREATEST COMEBACK ...

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (2007-09) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

WE’RE STREAKING Thanks to an 83-79 overtime victory over Wagner (2/9/13), RMU stretched its run of consecutive winning seasons to eight, the longest streak in school history. Since the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials own an overall record of 172-92 (.651), including a mark of 104-40 (.722) in the Northeast Conference.

It marks the fourth time in the last six seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2011-12. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. On the 2011-12 season, RMU averaged 8.32 steals per contest to pace the NEC.

Scouting the Mavericks - UT Arlington carries an overall record of 2-3 (.400) into its game with Robert Morris Thursday and is coming off a 105-76 loss @ No. 4 Kentucky (11/19/13) in its second game of the Keigthley Classic. Against the Wildcats, senior forward Brandon Edwards led the Mavericks with 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor and also grabbed a teamhigh 10 rebounds, while senior guard Reger Dowell added 20 points and redshirt junior forward Vincent Dillard chipped in with 13 points. Edwards enters Thursday’s game against the Colonials averaging a double-double at 18.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game while shooting 55.6 percent (30-for-54) from the field, while Dowell is UT Arlington’s leading scorer at 24.8 points per contest.

UT Arlington Head Coach - Scott Cross (UT Arlington ’98) has presided over the most successful era of UT Arlington basketball since taking over the program in 2006. In his eighth season at the helm, Cross has posted a record of 124-99 (.556). Three times under Cross UT Arlington has advanced to the postseason, including the 2008 NCAA Tournament, the 2012 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

RMU’s Last Game (AP) - Aaron Harrison scored 19 of his 28 points in the first half and No. 1 Kentucky started all freshmen for the first time in posting an 87-49 victory over Robert Morris, Nov. 17. After three games of starting four freshmen around sophomore 7-footer Willie Cauley-Stein, coach John Calipari rolled out a rookie lineup of Harrison and twin brother Andrew, James Young, Marcus Lee and Julius Randle. That look lasted just 51 seconds as CauleyStein replaced Lee, but the Wildcats (3-1) used other combinations of highly touted recruits.

Harrison ended up grabbing the spotlight instead of leading scorer Randle, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and making all 10 free throws. He also had four rebounds and three assists.

Randle added 10 points and 15 rebounds and Young had 10 points in the rematch of last spring's NIT game won by Robert Morris. The game quickly turned into a mismatch as the bigger, faster, Wildcats jumped out to a 17-2 lead and led by as 40 points. Kentucky shot 28of-57 from the field (49 percent), outrebounded the Colonials 56-33 and dominated the inside 36-16. Cauley-Stein finished with a career-high 13 rebounds, and Andrew Harrison had eight points. Karvel Anderson's 16 points led Robert Morris (2-2), which shot just 16-of-69 (23 percent). The game itself was intriguing with the Wildcats facing the team that ousted them from the NIT with a 59-57 NIT loss outside Pittsburgh in March, sparking Colonials fans to storm the small home court in celebration. In many ways that contest typified Kentucky's disappointing and inconsistent season with a four-man group including big man Nerlens Noel -- whose season-ending knee injury hastened the downfall -- and guard Archie Noel. Both are now gone to the NBA. Calipari hasn't watched the tape of that game, but the lingering memory of the loss stayed with veterans such as Jon Hood up until practice. As for this year's eight-man crop of talented newcomers, they were trying to get over Tuesday's 78-74 loss to No. 2 Michigan State in Chicago. On both counts, the Wildcats succeeded quite easily. Kentucky faced a Robert Morris lineup featuring three returning starters from that game plus leading scorer Anderson, but the Colonials played nothing like last spring's upset-minded squad. They started 1-of-10 from the field, and that first basket came on Aaron Tate's jumper at the 11:36 mark.

A Special Night - Senior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history last season in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Since the beginning of the 200708 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 109-22 (.832) when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In four seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 58-15 (.795) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the program in 2013-14. In Toole’s 108 games on the sidelines, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 73 contests, an amazing 67.6 percent of the time. Included in those 73 contests are 32 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with Robert Morris owning an astounding mark of 31-1 (.969) in those games. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 28 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris has become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2003-04 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.23 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn (7.06). Guard Karvel Anderson paced Robert Morris by draining 82 three-pointers in 2012-13, a total that ranks sixth in the RMU single-season record book.
