Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team concludes play in the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic with a pair of games after the Thanksgiving holiday, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. tip against La Salle in a neutral site contest at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa., Friday afternoon. RMU will close out the tournament with a 5:00 p.m. tip @ Pittsburgh Sunday, Nov. 27. The Colonials own a record of 1-1 through two games of the tourney thanks to an 82-77 victory in their last contest @ James Madison (11/22/11). Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones led Robert Morris against the Dukes with a career-high 38 points, converting on 10 of his 15 shots from the floor, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and a 15-for-19 showing at the free-throw line. Jackson (2003-08) dropped 39 in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Jones also became the 21st different student-athlete in school history to eclipse the 30-point plateau in a game at Robert Morris.

# The Philly Hoop Group Classic (Philadelphia, Pa.) (La Salle game played at the Palestra) * Northeast Conference game
Quick Stat of the Night - For Robert Morris to be successful, an ability to crash the glass is one reason why the Colonials could produce victories on a regular basis. Through four games of the 2011-12 season, RMU has done exactly that, outrebounding three of its first four opponents and averaging 34.8 caroms per contest. Robert Morris is coming off an 82-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11) in which it finished with a margin of +10 in rebounding, finishing with 37 boards compared to 27 for the Dukes. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson paced RMU with a seasonhigh nine rebounds. Through their first four games of the season, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +4.7, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference and trails only Quinnipiac. Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 21-15 (.583). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

At the heart of the resurgence for Robert Morris since the beginning of the 200708 campaign been one aspect: Defense. Over the last four years, the Colonials have held eight opponents to 45 points or less. Robert Morris opened its 201011 campaign and christened the Andrew Toole era with a virtuoso defensive performance, holding Saint Peter’s to a shooting percentage of just 16.7 percent (6-for-36) and 30 points in a 55-30 victory at the Charles L. Sewall Center (11/13/10). It marks the fewest points RMU has allowed in its 35-year Division I history. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, Robert Morris has posted eight of its top 12 best defensive performances against Division I opponents in regard to points allowed. Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last four seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Preseason Poll Notes: It marks the sixth straight year the Colonials have been picked to finish in the top three in the league ... Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... RMU has never been the preseason favorite to win an NEC title

RMU’s Last Game - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones scored a career-high 38 points to help propel Robert Morris to an 82-77 victory over James Madison, Nov. 22, as part of the Philly Hoop Group Classic at the JMU Convocation Center. Jones scored 14 of RMU’s 20 points in the final 5:36 of action as the Colonials climbed out of a six-point deficit to pull out the win. Leading, 59-51, with 12:54 remaining after a jumper from redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams, James Madison used a 15-3 run to take a 66-62 lead with 6:09 to play. The Dukes made their charge thanks to the long ball, as A.J. Davis hit a trio from beyond d the arc, while Andrey Semenov’s three-pointer gave JMU a four-point advantage. Jones started RMU’s final surge by hitting a pair at the free-throw line to pull the Colonials to within a basket, 66-64, and after a steal on JMU’s next possession Jones raced down the floor for a fastbreak layup that knotted the score for the fourth time, 66-66, with 5:09 to go. Enoch Hood would push James Madison back in front, 67-66, by hitting the front end of a one-one-one situation, but the Colonials took the lead for good when Jones buried a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3:58 to play. Jones converted four straight from the charity stripe to help keep Robert Morris in front, and after Humpty Hitchens hit a pair from the free-throw line to pull the Dukes within 73-71, Williams buried a jumper off a screen with 1:04 to play to keep it a two possession game. Jones added three free throws in the final minute of action, while senior forward Lawrence Bridges scored on a fastbreak dunk and Williams hit a pair of free throws with under a second to play. Ro bert Morris and James Madison traded leads four times in the first half, with the biggest advantage for the Dukes coming at the 10:35 mark, when a jumper by Julius Wells helped JMU open up a 22-15 lead. The Colonials responded with a 12-1 run that featured seven points from Velton Jones and a 5-for-6 performance at the free-throw line by freshman guard/forward Lucky Jones. RMU eventually entered the break with a 45-37 lead and stretched its advantage to 49-37 in the opening minutes of the second half. Leading Scorers: Jones, V. James Madison Notes - Robert Morris took a 2-1 (.667) edge in an all-time series that had been inactive since the 1978-79 campaign ... The 38 points for redshirt junior guard Velton Jones is tied for the fifth highest single-game total by a James Madison opponent ... The record for most points scored by an opposing player agains JMU is 45 points by former Navy All-American David Robinson ... Coincidentally, the most points scored by an RMU opponent is Steve Stielper, who finished with 51 points in a 92-78 win over the Colonials Jan. 27, 1979 ... Of JMU’s 10 field goals in the second half, nine came from beyond the arc ... Robert Morris held a commanding 26-8 edge in points in the paint and also outscored James Madison, 15-12, in points off turnovers. Mr. Jones - Notes on Velton Jones’ 38-point performance in an 83-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11) ... The 38 points is tied for the fourth highest single-game total in school history with former guard Gene Nabors (1995-2000), who finished with 38 in a 72-52 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) (3/3/00) in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Northeast Conference Tournament ... Four of RMU’s top five scoring games in school history have come away from the Charles L. Sewall Center ... Jones scored 20 points in the first half against the Dukes, becoming the first Colonial to score at least 20 points in a half since former Colonial A.J. Jackson (2003-08) finished with 21 in the first half en route to a 39point performance in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06) ... Jones converted 15 free throws against the Dukes, a career high and tied for the second highest single-game total in school history. The Race Heats Up - Thanks to a career-high 38 points in an 82-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11), redshirt junior guard Velton Jones has a chance to become the first student-athlete in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau in 2011-12 since former Colonial guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2007-08 campaign. Jones enters Friday’s game against La Salle as the program’s active leading scorer with 751 career points and would need to average 9.2 points over RMU’s final 27 regular-season contests to become the 20th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career points. Streaker - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters Friday’s game against La Salle with having reached double figures in scoring in each of his last 10 games dating back to last season, the longest active streak by a Colonial. Over that span Jones is averaging Jones is averaging 18.3 points per contest. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Friday’s game against La Salle owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 71 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 56 straight starts. Jones owns 66 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 31. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 71 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, having appeared in 48 consecutive games. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 71-11 (.865) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 68-9 (.883) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 16-5 (.762) when outrebounding its opponent. A Fresh Start - Robert Morris certainly wouldn’t be off to a 3-1 start without the contributions its received on the glass from its 2011-12 freshman class. Through the first four games, RMU’s four active freshman have combined for 52 of the squad’s 139 rebounds (37.4%). Freshman guard/forward Lucky Jones owns a team-high 27 rebounds so far this season, an average of 6.8 per contest. In an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11) in the 2011-12 season opener, Jones grabbed 13 rebounds. He fell two caroms shy of the RMU freshman record for caroms in a game, as former Colonial Anthony Dickens (1985-90) grabbed 15 boards in a game twice during the 1985-86 season.

Williams, who shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from long range in 2010-11 against the NEC, joins former Colonials Aaron Thomas, Derek Coleman and Jimmy Langhurst. Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04 against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent (51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurst paced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).
2010-11 RMU Basketball
Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Robert Morris improved to 68-13 (.840) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to 70 points or less thanks to a 69-52 victory @ Saint Peter’s (11/15/11), including a mark of 17-7 ( .708) under Toole. Three Is For Me - Robert Morris has hit at least one three-pointer in 532 straight games dating back to Feb. 25, 1993, an 84-82 victory over Marist at the Charles L. Sewall Center. In the previous contest, the Colonials finished 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in an 84-66 win over Long Island, also at the Sewall Center. Steal City - The defensive pressure Robert Morris has turned up in its 3-1 start to the 2011-12 campaign shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Colonials have forced 68 turnovers in their first four games, recording 33 steals. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones led RMU by tying a career high with five steals in an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11), and as a team RMU posted 15. RMU’s 15 thefts against Rider are the most by the Colonials under second-year head coach Andrew Toole as well as the program’s highest total since also finishing with 15 in the 2009-10 season opener @ Syracuse (11/11/09) . In The Clutch - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones came through with one of the biggest shots of his career in a 64-62 victory @ No. 2 seed Quinnipiac (3/6/11) in the semifinals of the 2011 NEC Tournament, hitting a jumper with 4.3 seconds to play to give the Colonials the victory. Jones, who finished with 13 points, eight assists and three steals in the win over the Bobcats, added his name to a pantheon of greats at RMU that has sank a game-winning shot in final 15 seconds of a game. The Dish Network - Sophomore guard Anthony Myers provides the Colonials with depth at the point guard position and is coming off a record-breaking freshman campaign. Myers finished the 2010-11 with 116 assists, establishing an RMU freshman record in the category. He broke the old mark of 106 that was set by former guard Samba Johnson (1992-94) in 1992-93. Myers has picked up where he left off from last season, posting 11 assists through the first four games of the 2011-12 campaign. Two Pair - Guards Velton Jones and Anthony Myers joined a select group of players in school history last season thanks to the ability of the duo to create for their teammates. Jones and Myers became the fourth pair of teammates to each eclipse 100 assists on the year and the first since former Colonials Derek Coleman (2003-07) and Tony Lee (200408) combined for 275 dimes during the 2006-07 campaign. Jones recorded a team-high 127 assists in 2010-11, while Myers finished with 116, an RMU freshman record. Jones enters the 2011-12 campaign with 226 career assists, which ranks third among active players in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.14 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.01 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
