Quick Stat of the Night - If anything, Robert Morris has proven to be extremely efficient on the glass in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign. The Colonials enter their tilt Sunday @ Pittsburgh having posted a margin of +25 on the glass in their last two games, victories @ James Madison (11/22/11) and against La Salle (11/25/11) at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa. So far it’s been a balanced attack on the glass for Robert Morris, as six Colonials average between 3.0 and 6.4 caroms per contest. In addition, RMU ranks second in the Northeast Conference thus far with a rebounding margin of +6.8.

Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 22-15 (.595). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Economical Margins The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last four seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Preseason Poll Notes: It marks the sixth straight year the Colonials have been picked to finish in the top three in the league ... Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... RMU has never been the preseason favorite to win an NEC title

Scouting the Panthers - Pittsburgh enters Sunday’s game ranked 16th in the country and owns an overall record of 4-1 after posting a 78-58 victory @ Penn (11/25/11) as part of the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic. Freshman Khem Birch, making the first start of his career, finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds against the Quakers, while senior guard Ashton Gibbs finished with 13 of his team-high 16 points in the second half. Gibbs leads the Panthers in scoring with a 19.0 points per game average and is shooting 45 percent (18-for-40) from beyond the arc, while senior forward Nasir Robinson adds averages of 16.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest. Redshirt junior guard Tray Woodall adds 15.6 points per game and owns a 41-to-16 assist-toturnover ratio. Pittsburgh Head Coach - Jamie Dixon (Texas Christian ’87) is in his ninth season as head coach at Pittsburgh and 13th season overall with the program. He has guided the Panthers to an overall record 220-61 (.783). Dixon entered the 2011-12 campaign with the third highest winning percentage among active Division I head coaches, trailing only Roy Williams of North Carolina and Mark Few of Gonzaga. RMU’s Last Game - In a game that featured five ties and 13 lead changes, Robert Morris used a 16-8 run over the final 6:27 to pull out a 51-44 victory over La Salle, Nov. 25, as part of the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic at the Palestra. Tyreek Duren had given La Salle a 36-35 edge with 6:27 to play by hitting the back end of a pair of free throws, but the Colonials got the lead right back on their next possession when redshirt junior guard Velton Jones converted a pair from the chalk after being fouled by Duren. Earl Pettis followed with a missed jumper for the Explorers, and junior center Lijah Thompson’s baseline jumper on a feed from Jones helped Robert Morris open up a 39-36 lead. Jones would add another pair of free throws with 4:46 to go that gave RMU a 41-36 advantage, and after Jerrell Wright hit a pair of his own at the charity stripe redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson picked the pocket of Pettis and raced the length of the court for an uncontested layup to give RMU a 43-38 lead with 3:48 to play. The score remained that way until the 2:07 mark of the second half, when Sam Mills buried a three-pointer to pull the Explorers with 43-41. Out of a 30-second timeout Robert Morris timeout, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams helped keep La Salle at bay with a jumper just inside the free-throw line. RMU sealed the win at the free-throw line, as Johnson hit four free throws and Williams added a pair in the final 1:17 of action. Neither team led by more than five the entire game until the final score as both teams played solid defense in the first half in what was an eventual 19-19 deadlock at the break. La Salle converted just 33.3 percent (7-for-21) of its attempts from the field before intermission, while Robert Morris hit just six of its 25 (24 percent) shots in the first half. Overall the Explorers were successful on just 31.9 percent (15-for-47) of their attempts from the floor, while the Colonials shot a meager 28 percent (14-for-50). RMU held the advantage at the free-throw line, finishing 23-for-34 (67.6 percent) compared to 11of-18 (61.1 percent) for La Salle. Jones paced RMU with 14 points, while Johnson tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, a block and a steal. Leading Scorers: Jones, V. La Salle Notes - RMU’s 51-44 victory over La Salle marked the first meeting between the two programs in school history ... The Colonials held a 45-30 edge in rebounding, including a 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass ... The Explorers finished with a 20-18 advantage over the Colonials in points in the paint ... The two teams combined for 30 turnovers, including 17 by La Salle ... Robert Morris improved to 2-2 (.500) all-time at the Palestra ... RMU’s shooting percentage of 28 percent (14-for-50) is the lowest in the Andrew Toole era and the program’s lowest since converting just 26.1 percent (18-for69) of its shots in a home loss to Appalachian State (12/19/09) ... The Robert Morris bench outscored the La Salle reserves, 9-6. 30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. The Colonials are coming off a 51-44 victory over La Salle (11/25/11) in which they visited the charity stripe 34 times, converting 23 (67.6 percent). RMU has now won 32 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 Northeast Conference Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first five games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 25.8 free-throw attempts per contest. A Gamer - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson seems to be settling in for Robert Morris at just the right time. Despite battling foul trouble in the 2011-12 season opener against Rider (11/11/11), Johnson has picked up his game, averaging 10.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game over his last four contests. He’s also shown an adept shooting touch over that span, converting 45.5 percent (15-for-33) of his shots from the floor, including a 5-for-10 performance (50 percent) from beyond the arc. The program’s active leading rebounder with 416 career caroms, Johnson needs to average just 3.2 rebounds in RMU’s final 26 regular-season games to become the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club. Mr. Jones - Notes on Velton Jones’ 38-point performance in an 82-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11) ... The 38 points is tied for the fourth highest single-game total in school history with former guard Gene Nabors (1995-2000), who finished with 38 in a 72-52 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) (3/3/00) in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Northeast Conference Tournament ... Four of RMU’s top five scoring games in school history have come away from the Charles L. Sewall Center ... Jones scored 20 points in the first half against the Dukes, becoming the first Colonial to score at least 20 points in a half since former Colonial A.J. Jackson (2003-08) finished with 21 in the first half en route to a 39point performance in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06) ... Jones converted 15 free throws against the Dukes, a career high and tied for the second highest single-game total in school history. The Race Heats Up - Thanks to a career-high 38 points in an 82-77 victory @ James Madison (11/22/11), redshirt junior guard Velton Jones has a chance to become the first player at Robert Morris to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau since former Colonial guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2007-08 campaign. Jones enters Sunday’s game @ Pittsburgh as the program’s active leading scorer with 765 career points and would need to average 9.0 points over RMU’s final 26 regular-season contests to become the 20th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. Streaker - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters Sunday’s game @ Pittsburgh having reached double figures in scoring in each of his last 11 games dating back to last season, the longest active streak by a Colonial. Over that span Jones is averaging 17.9 points per contest. It’s the longest streak since former guard Tony Lee (2004-08) closed out his career with 12 straight double-figure scoring games. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 72-11 (.867) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 69-9 (.885) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 17-5 (.773) when outrebounding its opponent.

Did You Know? Redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams is the fourth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the Northeast Conference in three-point field goal percentage against league foes. Williams, who shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from long range in 2010-11 against the NEC, joins former Colonials Aaron Thomas, Derek Coleman and Jimmy Langhurst. Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04 against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent (51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurst paced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).

2010-11 RMU Basketball

The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Sunday’s game @ Pittsburgh owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 72 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 57 straight starts. Jones owns 67 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 32. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 72 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while junior forward Lijah Thompson is next, having appeared in 49 consecutive games. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Robert Morris improved to 69-13 (.841) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to 70 points or less thanks to a 51-44 win over La Salle (11/25/11), including a mark of 18-7 ( .720) under Toole. Streak Snapped - One of the longest streaks in school history at Robert Morris was snapped in a 51-44 win over La Salle (11/25/11) as part of the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Colonials finished 0-for-6 from beyond the arc against the Explorers, snapping a streak of 532 consecutive games in which RMU hit at least one three-pointer in a game. Coincidentally, RMU also finished 0-for-6 from downtown the last time it failed to hit a three-pointer but also won, posting an 84-66 victory over Long Island (2/20/93) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Steal City - The defensive pressure Robert Morris has turned up in its 4-1 start to the 2011-12 campaign shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Colonials have forced 85 turnovers in their first five games, recording 45 steals. RMU is coming off a 51-44 victory over La Salle (11/25/11) in which it recorded 12 thefts, including a career-high three from senior forward Lawrence Bridges as well as three from redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams. So far this season the Colonials are averaging 9.0 steals per contest, which tops the Northeast Conference. In two seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, RMU owns a record 7-3 (.700) when finishing with at least 10 steals in a game. A Fresh Start - Robert Morris certainly wouldn’t be off to a 4-1 start without the contributions its received on the glass from its 2011-12 freshman class. Through the first five games, RMU’s four active freshmen have combined for 63 of the squad’s 184 rebounds (34.2%). Freshman guard/forward Lucky Jones owns a team-high 32 rebounds so far this season, an average of 6.4 per contest. In an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11) in the 2011-12 season opener, Jones grabbed 13 rebounds. He fell two caroms shy of the RMU freshman record for caroms in a game, as former Colonial Anthony Dickens (1985-90) grabbed 15 boards in a game twice during the 1985-86 season. In The Clutch - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones came through with one of the biggest shots of his career in a 64-62 victory @ No. 2 seed Quinnipiac (3/6/11) in the semifinals of the 2011 NEC Tournament, hitting a jumper with 4.3 seconds to play to give the Colonials the victory. Jones, who finished with 13 points, eight assists and three steals in the win over the Bobcats, added his name to a pantheon of greats at RMU that has sank a game-winning shot in final 15 seconds of a game. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.12 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.01 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
