Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team returns home to the Charles L. Sewall Center Saturday when it welcomes Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. tip. The Colonials are coming off a 61-52 setback @ Savannah State (11/26/12) to close out the month of November, as sophomore forward Lucky Jones paced RMU with a career-high 18 points while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Junior guard Karvel Anderson added 10 points and four rebounds off the bench against the Tigers.

Robert Morris shot just 28.6 percent (16-for-56) from the field @ Savannah State, the second time this season and just the fifth time in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole the Colonials have failed to convert at least 30 percent of their shots from the field in a game. RMU returns to the road after hosting the Bobcats Saturday, opening a two-game road swing Tuesday, Dec. 4, with a 7:00 p.m. tip @ Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. The Colonials will also visit Hampton Saturday, Dec. 8, in a 2:00 p.m. matchup before returning home to host Duquesne Saturday, Dec. 15.

Quick Stat of the Night - Despite a poor shooting performance in their last game @ Savannah State (11/26/12), the Colonials are hoping a return to the friendly confines of the Charles L. Sewall Center can help cure their woes. In its first two home games of the 2012-13, RMU shot 47.4 percent (46-for-97) from the field in victories over Bowling Green (11/19/12) and Cleveland State (11/20/12) as part of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off, far above its overall shooting percentage of the season at 37.1 percent (139-for-375). No Colonial likes playing at the Sewall Center more than redshirt junior guard Coron Williams. Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 47-29 (.618).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 132 team or individual records, with 52 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Sewall Center Saturday to host Ohio having posted a pair of victories in its first two home games of the 2012-13 season, including wins over Bowling Green (11/19/12) and Cleveland State (11/20/12) as part of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off. The Colonials, who have won at least 11 home games in each of their last seven seasons, enter Saturday’s game against Ohio having posted a record of 32-7 (.821) in non-conference home games at the Chuck over that span. Broken down, RMU is 24-5 (.828) in non-conference regular-season games at the Sewall Center and 8-2 (.800) in Northeast Conference Tournament home games. In three seasons under the direction of head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris owns a record of 10-1 (.909) in non-conference home games, with its only setback a 62-58 loss to Cleveland State (12/8/11). Overall, since the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials own a record of 83-20 (.806) at the Sewall Center, including a mark of 24-5 (.828) under Toole.

Lucky Charms - Lucky Jones is coming off one of the best games of his young career @ Savannah State (11/26/12), as the sophomore forward paced the Colonials with a career-high 18 points and also added seven rebounds. Jones seems to be coming into his own after struggling in the first two games of the 2012-13 campaign, as he enters Saturday’s game against Ohio having averaged 11.6 points and 7.0 rebounds over his last five contests. During that stretch, Jones has converted 47.1 percent (16-for-34) of his shots from the field and is also converting 87.5 percent (21-of-24) of his attempts at the free-throw line.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones finished with 22 assists in four games of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off and on the 2012-13 campaign owns 38 dimes through seven games, an average of 5.4 per contest. Jones became just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists earlier this season and enters Saturday’s game against Ohio with 431 career dimes.

Jones needs 125 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84) and would need to average 5.2 assists per game over RMU’s final 24 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Saturday’s game against Ohio having shot 78.7 percent (107-for-133) at the chalk in its first seven games of 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way in the early going is sophomore forward Lucky Jones, who ranks sixth in the NEC in free-throw percentage at 86.7 percent (26-for-30) after a perfect 6-for-6 performance @ Savannah State (11/26/12).

Right behind Jones is redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who ranks 10th in the NEC in freethrow percentage at 83.7 percent (41-for-49).

A Run At the Record? Despite missing the first three games of the 2012-13 campaign due to a high ankle sprain, redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson entered his final season of eligibility with a chance to become the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Johnson became the 16th member of the Robert Morris 500-rebound club in 2011-12 thanks to eight boards in a 70-56 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.) (2/11/12). He finished second for the Colonials in 2011-12 with 177 rebounds in 31 games, an average of 5.7 per contest. Johnson owns 585 career caroms and is 167 rebounds shy of becoming the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Johnson needs to average 6.9 rebounds in RMU’s remaining 24 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark. Currently, former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08) share the career record of 751 rebounds.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. It marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game to pace the NEC, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. Scouting the Bobcats - Ohio enters Saturday’s game against the Colonials with a perfect 6-0 record and is coming off a 69-64 victory over St. Bonaventure (11/28/12) that closed out a sixgame homestand to open the 2012-13 season. The Bobcats, who went to the Sweet 16 of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, enter Saturday’s game shooting 50.2 percent (161-for-321) from the field, including 39.8 percent (49-for-123) from beyond the arc. Ohio is led by senior guard D.J. Cooper, who is averaging 14.0 points and 6.8 assists per game. Cooper is one of four Bobcats scoring in double figures, as he is joined by senior guard Walter Offutt (12.0 ppg), senior forward Ivo Baltic (11.3 ppg) and junior guard Nick Kellogg (11.0 ppg). Junior forward Jon Smith, meanwhile, pulls down a team-high 5.3 rebounds per contest.

Ohio Head Coach - In his first season as head coach of the Bobcats is Jim Christian (Rhode Island ’88), who was named the 17th head coach in the history of Ohio basketball in April of 2012.

Christian spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Texas Christian, compiling a 56-73 (.434) overall record. Prior to TCU, Christian led Kent State to a record of 137-59 (.699) and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances from 2002 to 2008. He enters Saturday’s game against Robert Morris with an overall record of 199-132 (.601).

RMU’s Last Game - Trailing, 43-24, with just eight minutes remaining, Robert Morris used a an 18-5 run to make it a two-possession game, 48-42, with 2:26 to play, but Savannah State held off the Colonials, 61-52, Nov. 26, at Tiger Arena. Robert Morris shot just 28.6 percent (16for-56) on the game but rallied late, as five points from junior guard Karvel Anderson and a combined five points at the stripe from redshirt senior guard Velton Jones and sophomore forward Lucky Jones helped the Colonials close to within 44-34 with 4:34 to go. RMU had an opportunity to cut its deficit even further, but junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate was whistled for an intentional foul on Savannah State’s Stephen Wilson. Wilson hit both free throws, then buried a jumper to give the Tigers a 48-34 advantage, but five straight points from Lucky Jones, including a three-point play, made it a two-possession game, 48-42 in favor of SSU, with 2:26 to play. Robert Morris would get no closer, as Savannah State shot 13-for-16 at the free-throw line in the final 2:11 of action to seal the win. A defensive first half saw the Tigers take a 23-17 lead at intermission behind Preston Blackman, who shot 6-for-10 from the field for 12 points.

RMU converted just 25 percent (6-for-24) of its shots before the break but were within striking distance thanks to forcing 11 turnovers. The shooting woes continued for Robert Morris into the second half, as Anderson snapped an 11-minute drought without a field goal dating back to the first half with a three-pointer at the 15:14 mark that pulled the Colonials to within 2920. Savannah State answered Anderson's three-pointer with a 10-2 surge that opened up a 3922 lead with 9:56 left, and the Tigers kept their cushion in double figures until RMU’s late spurt.

Blackman led all scorers in the contest with 20 points and also added a pair of assists for SSU, while Cedric Smith finished with 10 points. Robert Morris was led by Lucky Jones, who finished with a career-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free-throw line. He also added a team-high seven rebounds.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that Robert Morris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Through the first seven games of the season, Morgan has recorded 14 blocks, an average of 2.0 per contest that ranks second in the Northeast Conference.

Based on his current average, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years.

Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish the regular season with 62 blocks.

Settling In - After a pair of uncharacteristic performances on the defensive end in the first two games of the 2012-13 campaign, RMU is settling in. The Colonials enter Saturday’s game against Ohio having allowed an average of just 60.4 points per game over their last five contests. However, Robert Morris is 3-2 (.600) in that stretch. RMU is coming off a 2011-12 campaign in which it set a school record for scoring defense, allowing just 63.5 points per game, which led the Northeast Conference. The Colonials enter Saturday’s tilt against the Bobcats ranked third in the NEC in scoring defense, allowing 67.1 points per contest.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (438) and free-throw attempts (609), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Saturday’s game against Ohio leading the Colonials in both free throws (41) and free-throw attempts (49), a success rate of 83.7 percent that ranks 10th in the Northeast Conference.

Double Your Pleasure - Junior forward Mike McFadden registered his first career double-double against Lehigh (11/12/12) in the opening round of the 2012 NIT Season TipOff, leading the Colonials with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. McFadden is the fourth active player on the Robert Morris roster to post a double-double. The current active leader in double-doubles for RMU is redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson, who enters Saturday’s game vs. Ohio with five career double-doubles.

Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 37-year history as a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU’s ability to convert from beyond the arc. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams posted a team-high 87 three-pointers in 2011-12, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book. Former Colonial Scott Shepard (1988-91) owns the single-season mark with 93 during his first year with RMU in 1988-89. In 2011-12, Williams became the third player in the last four years to hit at least 80 three-pointers in a season and is also the eighth different Colonial in the last 11 years to post one of the top 10 single-season marks in three-point field goals. Williams enters Saturday’s game against Ohio with 150 career three-pointers, which currently ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris.

The Comeback Kids - Facing a double-digit deficit under head coach Andrew Toole doesn’t seem to be a problem for Robert Morris. In seven of their last 11 road tilts of the 2011-12 season the Colonials fell behind by double digits but came back to win four of them. In a 67-60 win @ Indiana State (3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CIT, RMU fell behind by 12 in the first half, 21-9, and faced double-digit deficits seven times in the first eight minutes of the second half before roaring back for the victory. The win @ Indiana State marked the ninth time RMU has climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. Included in that stretch is a 15-point deficit in the second half of an 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting assignments. Williams has started 49 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season.

10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his second double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign in a 71-60 win over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, finishing with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-4 performance from beyond the arc, and a 2-for-2 showing at the free-throw line. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Saturday’s tilt against Ohio with a record of 24-7 (.774) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the RMU roster. Right behind Williams is Lucky Jones, as Robert Morris owns a record of 11-5 (.688) when the sophomore forward reaches double figures.

The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 111 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 105 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and he needs 16 starting assignments to break the school record of 120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 71-62 win over Cleveland State (11/20/12) in the NIT Season Tip-Off, Robert Morris owns a record to 92-19 (.829) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 41-12 (.774) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 76 games on the sidelines over the last two seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 53 contests, an amazing 69.7 percent of the time. Included in those 50 contests are 23 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMU owning an astounding mark of 22-1 (.957) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 58-53 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 21 straight when turning the trick.

Joining Jones was junior guards Coron Williams (12) and Anthony Myers-Pate (11) and junior forward Mike McFadden (12). RMU has had four players reach double figures in scoring a total of 24 times in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, with the Colonials owning a record of 17-7 (.708) in those contests. Included in that stretch was 13 times in 2011-12, with Robert Morris posting a mark of 9-4 (.692) in those contests.

Long Distance Dialing - Thanks to tying an RMU single-game record for three-pointers with 16 in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament, the Colonials eclipsed 200 three-pointers in 2011-12 and finished the season with 240.

It marks the eighth time in the last nine years that Robert Morris has eclipsed 200 three-pointers in a season. The top two sharpshooters from long range for RMU in 2011-12 were redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who combined for 147 three-pointers. That total is the second highest by an RMU tandem in school history.

Streaker - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones owns the longest double-figure scoring streak by a Colonial on the active roster at 19 games. Jones turned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first 13 games in 2011-12. Over that span, Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest.

The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still near the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.04 threepointers per contest, which ranks second behind St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.11 three-pointers a game. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book.
