Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team opens a two-game road swing in search of its first road victory of the 2012-13 campaign Tuesday night by traveling to Buies Creek, N.C., for a 7:00 p.m. tip against Campbell at Gore Arena. The Colonials are coming off an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center as junior guard Karvel Anderson scored a career-high 28 points on perfect 10-for-10 shooting from the floor, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson added 14 points and four rebounds off the bench in the victory, while redshirt senior guard Velton Jones contributed 12 points and seven assists. Thanks to his performance against the Bobcats, Anderson was tabbed the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week (12/3/12) along with LIU Brooklyn’s Jason Brickman. RMU continues its road trip after taking on the Camels with a 2:00 p.m. tip against Hampton Saturday, Dec. 8, in Hampton, Va.

Quick Stat of the Night - Led by the shooting exploits of junior guard Karvel Anderson, Robert Morris produced its best shooting night of the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 victory over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials finished the game with a season-high shooting percentage of 56.4 percent (22-for-39), including a mark of 66.7 percent (12-for-18) from beyond the arc. RMU has now won 29 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor dating back to the 2008-09 season. The last loss for Robert Morris when hitting over half its shots came in a 92-72 setback @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the field in the second half en route to an overall shooting percentage of 57.4 percent (27-for-47).

Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 48-29 (.623).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or individual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. There’s An App For That - While Robert Morris posted an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) largely on the offensive prowess of junior guard Karvel Anderson, the Colonials wouldn’t have been able to come out with the victory without the contributions of sophomore guard David Appolon. Playing in just his second game of the 2012-13 season due to an injury to junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate, Appolon tied a career high in points (7) while grabbing a career-high four rebounds in 17 minutes of action. He also produced solid defensive play, helping hold Ohio’s D.J. Cooper to just 6-of-17 shooting on the evening.

Lucky Charms - Sophomore forward Lucky Jones seems to be coming into his own after struggling in the first two games of the 2012-13 campaign, as he enters Tuesday’s game @ Campbell having averaged 11.0 points and 7.2 rebounds over his last six contests. During that stretch, Jones has converted 47.2 percent (17-for-36) of his shots from the field and is also converting 90 percent (27-of-30) of his attempts at the free-throw line. Included in that stretch is one of the best games of his young career @ Savannah State (11/26/12), as Jones paced RMU with a career-high 18 points and also added seven rebounds.

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones finished with 22 assists in four games of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off and on the 2012-13 campaign owns 45 dimes through eight games, an average of 5.6 per contest. Jones became just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists earlier this season and enters Tuesday’s game @ Campbell with 438 career dimes. Jones needs 118 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84) and would need to average 5.1 assists per game over RMU’s final 23 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Tuesday’s game @ Campbell having shot 78.9 percent (150-for-190) at the chalk in its first eight games of 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way in the early going is sophomore forward Lucky Jones, who is tied for second in the NEC in free-throw percentage at 88.9 percent (32-for-36) after a perfect 6-for-6 performance in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12). Jones enters Tuesday’s game against the Camels having converted each of his last 18 attempts at the chalk.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. It marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game to pace the NEC, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. Leading the Colonials in 2011-12 was redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who ranked third in the NEC with an average of 1.84 thefts per game, while junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate ranked 11th (1.24 spg).

Scouting the Camels - Campbell owns an overall record of 3-5 (.375) entering Tuesday’s contest with Robert Morris after posting a 91-78 victory over Newberry (11/29/12) at Gore Arena in Buies Creek, N.C. Sophomore guard Trey Freeman led four Camels in double figures scoring against Newberry with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and a 7-for-8 performance at the free-throw line. He also added a game-high seven assists. Freeman averages 13.9 points and 6.4 assists per game and is also shooting 50.6 percent (43-for-85) from the field so far this season. The leading scorer for Campbell is senior guard Darren White, who ranks 16th in NCAA Division I in scoring (21.9 ppg) but missed the Newberry game due to injury. White is also grabbing a team-high 7.0 rebounds per contest.

Campbell Head Coach - The 2012-13 season marks the 10th year for head coach Robbie Laing (Troy State ’82) as head coach of the Camels. He owns an overall record of 104-170 (.380). Over the past four seasons since moving into the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center / Gilbert Craig Gore Arena, Laing’s teams have amassed a 62-61 overall record (.504), a 42-36 conference mark (.538), stand 40-16 at home (.714) and won a league regular-season title.

RMU’s Last Game - Junior guard Karvel Anderson tied a Charles L. Sewall Center record with eight three-pointers and produced a perfect night shooting to help propel Robert Morris to an 84-76 victory over Ohio, Dec 1. Making his first career start, Anderson finished 10-for-10 shooting from the floor, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc, for a career-high 28 points in the win. The Colonials never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 5-0 lead thanks to three-points from redshirt senior guard Velton Jones and a jumper from Anderson. Ohio came back to knot the score, 5-5, after a three-pointer from Walter Offutt and a layup from Reggie Keely, which marked the only tie of the contest. Nursing a 12-10 advantage at the 13:09 mark of the first half, Robert Morris used a 19-2 surge to open up its biggest lead of the contest, 31-12, with 7:09 left before the break. Anderson was the main offensive catalyst, drilling four consecutive threepointers, while Jones scored the final five points of the run. The Bobcats didn't wilt, trimming their deficit to 37-31 at intermission by closing the half on a 19-6 run. Stevie Taylor put on his own show from beyond the arc, converting a trio, including one with 42 seconds left in the half that cut Ohio's deficit to six. In the second half, Robert Morris was able stretch its lead back to double digits, 51-41, after a pair of free throws from redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson, and another two shots from the stripe from Johnson with 7:31 remaining gave the Colonials a 66-57 edge. However, the Bobcats used a 6-1 spurt to close within 67-63. Johnson responded with his first field goal of the contest by connecting from deep to push RMU's lead to 70-63, but a three-pointer from D.J. Cooper of Ohio capped a 6-2 run to make it a one-possession game, 72-69, with just 3:08 to play. Jones would give the Colonials some breathing room with a pair of free throws, but Cooper again made it a one-possession contest with 2:17 to go after a driving layup. However, with the shot clock winding down, redshirt junior guard Coron Williams buried a three-pointer from the corner to give Robert Morris a 77-71 advantage. Anderson helped seal the win with his eighth trifecta of the contest, at the 1:08 mark of the second half.

The Race to 1,000 - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson reached double-figures in scoring for the first time on the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center with 14 points. Johnson reached double figures on the strength of an 11-for-12 performance at the free-throw line, establishing career highs in both categories. Johnson is now just 95 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that Robert Morris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Through the first eight games of the season, Morgan has recorded 16 blocks, an average of 2.0 per contest that is tied atop the Northeast Conference leaderboard with Wagner’s Naofall Folahan. Based on his current average, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish the regular season with 62 blocks.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (445) and free-throw attempts (618), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Tuesday’s game @ Campbell leading the Colonials in both free throws (48) and free-throw attempts (58), a success rate of 82.8 percent that ranks ninth in the Northeast Conference.

Double Your Pleasure - Junior forward Mike McFadden registered his first career double-double against Lehigh (11/12/12) in the opening round of the 2012 NIT Season TipOff, leading the Colonials with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. McFadden is the fourth active player on the Robert Morris roster to post a double-double. The current active leader in double-doubles for RMU is redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson, who enters Tuesday’s game @ Campbell with five career double-doubles.

Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 37-year history as a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU’s ability to convert from beyond the arc. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams posted a team-high 87 three-pointers in 2011-12, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book. Former Colonial Scott Shepard (1988-91) owns the single-season mark with 93 during his first year with RMU in 1988-89. In 2011-12, Williams became the third player in the last four years to hit at least 80 three-pointers in a season and is also the eighth different Colonial in the last 11 years to post one of the top 10 single-season marks in three-point field goals. Williams enters Tuesday’s game @ Campbell with 151 career three-pointers, which currently ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris.

The Comeback Kids - Facing a double-digit deficit under head coach Andrew Toole doesn’t seem to be a problem for Robert Morris. In seven of their last 11 road tilts of the 2011-12 season the Colonials fell behind by double digits but came back to win four of them. In a 67-60 win @ Indiana State (3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CIT, RMU fell behind by 12 in the first half, 21-9, and faced double-digit deficits seven times in the first eight minutes of the second half before roaring back for the victory. The win @ Indiana State marked the ninth time RMU has climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. Included in that stretch is a 15-point deficit in the second half of an 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).

Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones became the sixth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the NEC in steals against league foes in 2011-12. Jones averaged 2.39 thefts per contest, recording at least three steals in eight of RMU’s 16 tilts against league opponents. Jones joins former Colonials Tony Lee (2004-08) and Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) to turn the trick. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in 2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg), while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2 spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). Jones is the fourth Colonial overall to lead the NEC in steals against league foes, joining former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000).

10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his second double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign in a 71-60 win over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, finishing with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-4 performance from beyond the arc, and a 2-for-2 showing at the free-throw line. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Tuesday’s tilt @ Campbell with a record of 24-7 (.774) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the RMU roster. Right behind Williams is Lucky Jones, as Robert Morris owns a record of 11-5 (.688) when the sophomore forward reaches double figures.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic.

In a 55-53 win @ Sacred Heart (2/23/12), redshirt senior guard Velton Jones buried a three-pointer with 0.1 seconds to play that helped give the Colonials the victory. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 112 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 106 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and he needs 15 starting assignments to break the school record of 120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 71-62 win over Cleveland State (11/20/12) in the NIT Season Tip-Off, Robert Morris owns a record to 92-19 (.829) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 41-12 (.774) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 77 games on the sidelines over the last two seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 53 contests, an amazing 68.8 percent of the time.

Included in those 50 contests are 23 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMU owning an astounding mark of 22-1 (.957) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 5853 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 21 straight when turning the trick.

Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for Robert Morris over the last six seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 94-17 (.847) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including an 90-15 (.857) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s three seasons as head coach, Robert Morris has posted a record of 38-11 (.776) when outrebounding its opponent, including a mark of 4-2 (.667) in 2012-13.

Four Score and ... In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt senior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 16 points. Joining Jones was junior guards Coron Williams (12) and Anthony Myers-Pate (11) and junior forward Mike McFadden (12). RMU has had four players reach double figures in scoring a total of 24 times in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, with the Colonials owning a record of 17-7 (.708) in those contests. Included in that stretch was 13 times in 2011-12, with Robert Morris posting a mark of 9-4 (.692) in those contests.

Long Distance Dialing - Thanks to tying an RMU single-game record for three-pointers with 16 in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament, the Colonials eclipsed 200 three-pointers in 2011-12 and finished the season with 240.

It marks the eighth time in the last nine years that Robert Morris has eclipsed 200 three-pointers in a season. The top two sharpshooters from long range for RMU in 2011-12 were redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who combined for 147 three-pointers. That total is the second highest by an RMU tandem in school history.

Streaker - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones owns the longest double-figure scoring streak by a Colonial on the active roster at 19 games. Jones turned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first 13 games in 2011-12. Over that span, Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest.

The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. The longest double-figure scoring streak of the 2012-13 campaign also belongs to Jones, who reached the plateau in five straight games before finishing with just seven points @ Savannah State (11/26/12). Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still near the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.06 threepointers per contest, which ranks second behind St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.11 three-pointers a game. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book.
