Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team, winners of two straight and four of its last five contests, closes out a two-game road trip Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. tip against Hampton at the Convocation Center. The Colonials are coming off a 61-58 victory @ Campbell (12/4/12), their first road win of the 2012-13 campaign. Junior guard Karvel Anderson buried a three-pointer with 4.5 seconds remaining to help lift RMU to the win and finished the contest with 13 points. He converted four of his 10 shots from the field, including a 4-for-7 performance from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Lucky Jones paced Robert Morris against the Camels with 15 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals, while junior forward Mike McFadden contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. The Colonials return home to the Charles L. Sewall Center after taking on the Pirates Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. tip against crosstown rival Duquesne Saturday, Dec. 15.

Quick Stat of the Night - The mark of a good point guard can be be quantified in how many assists a student-athlete has, but Ken Pomeroy (kenpom.com) has taken it a step further. Pomery developed the assist rate, which helps reveal how much a point guard has control of his offense while he’s on the court. Entering this week’s action, only four players in the nation had an assist rate of better than 50 percent, with redshirt senior guard Velton Jones (51.3% assist rate) leading the Northeast Conference and ranking third overall in NCAA Division I. Jones dipped to 48.2% after tying for team-high honors in assists with four in a 61-58 victory @ Campbell (12/4/12), trailing only Rarlensee Nelson of New Orleans (53.6%), Anthony Collins of South Florida (52.6%) and Michael Carter-Williams of Syracuse (50.2%).

Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 49-29 (.628).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or individual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Lucky Charms - Sophomore forward Lucky Jones seems to be coming into his own after struggling in the first two games of the 2012-13 campaign, as he enters Saturday’s game @ Hampton having averaged 11.6 points and 6.9 rebounds over his last seven contests. During that stretch, Jones has converted 44.2 percent (19-for-43) of his shots from the field and is also converting 86.4 percent (38-of-44) of his attempts at the free-throw line. Included in that stretch is one of the best games of his young career in a 61-58 win @ Campbell (12/4/12) with a team-high 15 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals.

There’s An App For That - With junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate having missed the last two games due to injury, it’s given an opportunity for sophomore guard David Appolon to step up and show his skills. Playing in just his second game of the 2012-13 season in an 8476 win over Ohio (12/1/12), Appolon scored seven points while grabbing a career-high four rebounds in 17 minutes of action. He followed that up with a career-high eight points on 3of-8 shooting from the field in a 61-58 win @ Campbell (12/4/12). Thanks to his production Appolon is averaging 6.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest this season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a 110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. Dishing It Out - Velton Jones finished with 22 assists in four games of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off and on the 2012-13 campaign owns 49 dimes through nine games, an average of 5.4 per contest. Jones became just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists earlier this season and enters Saturday’s game @ Hampton with 442 career dimes.

Jones needs 114 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84) and would need to average 5.2 assists per game over RMU’s final 22 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Saturday’s game @ Hampton having shot 79.2 percent (171-for-216) at the chalk in its first nine games of 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way is sophomore forward Lucky Jones, who is ranks fifth in the NEC in free-throw percentage at 86 percent (43-for-50) after establishing career highs in free throws (11) and free-throw attempts (14) in an 61-58 win @ Campbell (12/4/12). Jones had converted 23 consecutive shots at the stripe before missing one against the Camels.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. Scouting the Pirates - Hampton owns an overall record of 1-6 (.167) entering Saturday’s game against Robert Morris after posting a 58-50 win over Howard (12/1/12) in its 2012-13 home opener at the Convocation Center. The Pirates were led against the Bison by freshman guard Deron Powers, who scored 22 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, and a 6-for-7 performance at the free-throw line. Powers, the reigning MidEastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, leads the Pirates in scoring (12.1 ppg) and assists (23) and has converted 95.8 percent (23-of-24) of his attempts at the charity stripe.

The top rebounders for the Pirates are redshirt freshman guard Dwight Meikle and junior center David Bruce, who are each pulling down an average of 6.6 caroms per contest.

Hampton Head Coach - The 2012-13 campaign is the fourth season for head coach Edward Joyner (Johnson C. Smith ’95) at the helm of the Pirates. He enters Saturday’s game sporting an overall record of 51-54 (.486). In 2010-11, Joyner led the Pirates to an overall record of 24-9 (.727), marking the first time Hampton eclipsed 20 victories since the 2001-02 campaign. The Pirates defeated Morgan State, 60-55, in the 2011 MEAC Tournament championship game, earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

RMU’s Last Game - Junior guard Karvel Anderson’s three-pointer with 4.5 seconds to play helped lift Robert Morris to a 61-58 victory over Campbell, Dec. 4, at Gore Arena. The Camels had one last gasp, but Trey Freeman’s three-pointer as time expired was off the mark, helping give the Colonials their first road win of the season. In a game that featured 14 ties and 13 lead changes, the Camels owned a 56-55 advantage with 1:19 to play after a dunk by Marvelle Harris.

Sophomore forward Lucky Jones missed a jumper on RMU’s next possession, but Anderson began the final flurry by stepping in front of a Freeman pass for a steal, setting up a fastbreak opportunity. Robert Morris would convert to grab the lead back, 58-56, when Anderson hit a three-pointer from the wing with 41.9 seconds to play off a feed from redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. Harris came back to tie the game for the final time, 58-58, with a layup with 26.1 seconds remaining, setting up Anderson’s game winner. On the game-winning possession, Velton Jones drove the lane before kicking out to sophomore forward Lucky Jones. Lucky Jones dumped the ball off and set a screen, giving Anderson a clear look at the basket for his gamewinning three-pointer. A defensive battle all contest, RMU owned a 25-21 lead at halftime on the strength of a 10-for-12 performance at the free-throw line before intermission, including a 4-for-4 performance from Lucky Jones. Junior forward Mike McFadden would give the Colonials a 30-25 edge with 16:39 to go after a pair of free throws, but Campbell used a 9-0 run to open up a 34-30 advantage at the 13:29 mark of the second half. Harris and Darian Hooker each scored four points during the spurt for the Camels. RMU came back to tie the score, 36-36, after a layup from Lucky Jones with 11:32 left in the contest, setting up a sequence in the final eight minutes in which there were six ties and five lead changes. Anderson finished with 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field for Robert Morris, including a 4-for-7 performance from beyond the arc.

Getting Comfortable - Robert Morris enters Saturday’s game @ Hampton with an overall record of 5-4 (.556) but are 5-2 (.714) since opening the 2012-13 campaign with back-toback losses @ Rider (11/9/12) and against Lehigh (11/13/12) in the opening round of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off. Over the course of the last seven games, no Colonial has been hotter than junior guard Karvel Anderson. During that span, Anderson leads RMU in scoring at 13.3 points per game and is shooting 50.8 percent (33-for-65) from the field, including 47.7 percent (21-for-44) from beyond the arc. In two games as a starter, Anderson is averaging 20.5 points while shooting 70 percent (14-for-20) from the field.

The Race to 1,000 - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson reached double-figures in scoring for the first time on the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center with 14 points. Johnson reached double figures on the strength of an 11-for-12 performance at the free-throw line, establishing career highs in both categories. Johnson is now just 95 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that Robert Morris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Through the first nine games of the season, Morgan has recorded 16 blocks, an average of 1.8 per contest that ranks second in the Northeast Conference behind Wagner’s Naofall Folahan. Based on his current average, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (200810) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish the regular season with 55 blocks.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (449) and free-throw attempts (622), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Hampton leading the Colonials in both free throws (52) and free-throw attempts (62), a success rate of 83.9 percent that ranks ninth in the Northeast Conference.

Double Your Pleasure - Junior forward Mike McFadden registered his first career double-double against Lehigh (11/12/12) in the opening round of the 2012 NIT Season TipOff, leading the Colonials with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. McFadden is the fourth active player on the Robert Morris roster to post a double-double. The current active leader in double-doubles for RMU is redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson, who enters Saturday’s game @ Hampton with five career double-doubles.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting assignments. Williams has started 51 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season.

Jones averaged 2.39 thefts per contest, recording at least three steals in eight of RMU’s 16 tilts against league opponents. Jones joins former Colonials Tony Lee (2004-08) and Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) to turn the trick. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in 2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg), while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2 spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). Jones is the fourth Colonial overall to lead the NEC in steals against league foes, joining former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000).

10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his second double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign in a 71-60 win over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, finishing with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-4 performance from beyond the arc, and a 2-for-2 showing at the free-throw line. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Saturday’s tilt @ Hampton with a record of 24-7 (.774) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the RMU roster. Right behind Williams is Lucky Jones, as Robert Morris owns a record of 12-5 (.706) when the sophomore forward reaches double figures.

In a 61-58 victory @ Campbell (12/4/12), junior guard Karvel Anderson buried a threepointer with 4.5 seconds left to help lift the Colonials to the win. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 113 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 107 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and he needs 14 starting assignments to break the school record of 120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 61-58 victory @ Campbell, Robert Morris owns a record to 93-19 (.830) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 42-12 (.778) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 78 games on the sidelines over the last three seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 54 contests, an amazing 69.2 percent of the time.

Included in those 50 contests are 24 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMU owning an astounding mark of 23-1 (.958) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 5853 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 22 straight when turning the trick.

On The Offensive - Led by the shooting exploits of junior guard Karvel Anderson, Robert Morris produced its best shooting night of the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 victory over Ohio (12/1/12). The Colonials finished the game with a season-high shooting percentage of 56.4 percent (22-for-39), including a mark of 66.7 percent (12-for-18) from beyond the arc. RMU has now won 29 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor dating back to the 2008-09 season. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still near the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.06 threepointers per contest, which ranks second behind St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.11 three-pointers a game. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book.
