2014-15 RMU Basketball

Reserve Clause - The Robert Morris bench has been the spot of instant offense for the Colonials in the early portion of the 2014-15 campaign. RMU enters Saturday’s game against Duquesne receiving an average of 32.1 points per game from its reserves. Robert Morris received a season-high 44 points from its bench against Youngstown State (12/2/14) as reserves Lucky Jones and Rodney Pryor combined for 35 points. Jones paced the Colonials with 21 points, while Pryor contributed 14 points. The leading scorer for RMU has come from the bench in six of eight games this season, and the reserves for the Colonials have outscored their opponents by a margin of +15.0. The group is shooting 43.9 percent (86for-196) from the field, including 39 percent (30-for-77) from beyond the arc, and 73.3 percent (55-for-75) at the free-throw line. A Bright Spot - Freshman forward Elijah Minnie put forth the most consistent game of his young career against Buffalo (12/7/14), registering his first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Minnie finished 4-for-5 shooting from the field against the Bulls and grabbed seven defensive boards among his 10 caroms. It was a stark contrast from RMU’s first seven games, as Minnie had tallied just five defensive rebounds in his first 114 minutes. Hot Rod - Rodney Pryor has settled into a groove offensively for Robert Morris, as the junior guard enters Saturday’s game against Duquesne leading the Colonials in scoring at 13.9 points per game while shooting 50.7 percent (36-for-71) from the field, including 47.7 percent (21-for-44) from deep, and 85.7 percent (18-for-21) at the free-throw line. Pryor ranks in the top six in the Northeast Conference in five different categories, including third in three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made per game, fifth in freethrow percentage and sixth in field goal percentage. Climbing The Charts - Senior forward Lucky Jones paced RMU against Youngstown State (12/2/14) with a season-high 21 points and also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points against Buffalo (12/7/14). The pair of performances have helped Jones push his career total for double-figure scoring to 69, which ranks 10th all-time in program history. Jones is five double-figure scoring games away from ninth place, a spot that is currently held by former guard Forest Grant (1980-84) with 74. Surf Board - Thanks to five rebounds against Youngstown State (12/2/14), senior forward Lucky Jones became just the fourth player in program history to eclipse 700 career boards. Jones owns 706 career caroms and is 46 shy of breaking the all-time record of 751 that is currently held by a pair of former Colonials. Former forward Anthony Dickens grabbed 751 rebounds from 1985 to 1990, while former guard Tony Lee tied that mark with 751 boards from 2004 to 2008. International Waters - RMU has consistently been at the top of the Northeast Conference much of the previous decade in regard to its three-point shooting, and the Colonials seemed to find their touch from deep in a 68-61 victory @ Bradley (11/19/14). Robert Morris finished 9-for-18 (50%) from beyond the arc against the Braves as forward Lucky Jones and guard Rodney Pryor combined to go 9-for-13 (69.2%). In five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a record of 30-5 (.857) when converting at least 10 threepointers in a game. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the Robert Morris basketball program since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign is defense. Thanks to a 74-51 victory over ULM (11/27/14), the Colonials improved to 125-25 (.833) over the last eight seasons when holding their opponent to less than 70 points. In five years under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a mark of 74-18 (.804) when turning the trick. Home On The Road - Freshman guard Marcquise Reed etched his name in the Robert Morris record book by scoring a game-high 24 points @ No. 6 North Carolina (11/16/14) as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Reed established a record for most points scored by a freshman playing his first road game, eclipsing the 22 points former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) scored in a 99-94 victory @ Dayton (12/19/90). Walker, the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,965 points, was playing in his first Division I game at Robert Morris when he posted his performance against the Flyers. Reed, who is averaging 11.3 points through RMU’s first eight games of the season, was tabbed the first Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week of the 2014-15 campaign when he garnered the honor Nov. 17, 2014.

The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while LIU Brooklyn defeated Wagner, 127-77, Feb. 11, 1998. RMU’s Last Game - Justin Moss finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds to help lead Buffalo to a 74-59 victory over Robert Morris, Dec. 7, at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Buffalo jumped out to a lead of 7-2 in the opening minutes thanks to a jumper from Lamonte Bearden, a three-pointer from Jarryn Skeete and a layup by Moss. The Bulls never trailed in the contest, opening up their first double-digit advantage, 20-10, at the 8:07 mark of the first half when Will Regan connected from beyond the arc. Regan would give UB its biggest lead before the break, 27-12, with a layup, and the Bulls eventually owned a 33-23 advantage at halftime. Regan supplied nine points in the first stanza for Buffalo. Robert Morris trimmed its deficit to 36-29 in the first three minutes of the second half thanks to six points from freshman guard Marcquise Reed, who paced the Colonials with 18 points. Moss, however, helped keep the Bulls ahead in the second half, compiling 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds after intermission. He finished 3-for-4 at the free-throw line after Reed's flurry to get the lead back to double digits for UB, 41-29, with 14:09 remaining. The Bulls took control with a 14-3 surge that allowed Buffalo to open up a 55-34 advantage with 9:25 to go. Skeet buried a pair of threepointers during the run, while Shannon Evans capped it with a dunk off a steal by Rodell Wigginton. "We just make so many mistakes that it's hard to win," head coach Andrew Toole said. "What's alarming is we've seen this before. Game after game after game. It's been seven games that we've seen the same thing. Everything is worth what you're willing to pay for it. Right now we're not willing to pay the price to win a game yet." 2014-15 RMU Basketball

Steal City - Robert Morris finished the 2013-14 campaign tops in the Northeast Conference in steals, averaging 7.08 per game. It marked the fifth time in the last seven years that the Colonials have paced the league in steals. RMU is right back at it again this season, as the Colonials enter Saturday’s game against Duquesne tops in the NEC in steals per game (9.00). In a 71-54 win over ULM (11/27/14) that wrapped up play in the Battle 4 Atlantis, Robert Morris posted a season-high 12 steals. Senior forward Lucky Jones is pacing RMU so far this seaosn with 15 thefts. There’s An App For That - Senior guard David Appolon has been one of the most consistent members of the Colonials to crash the glass in the early portion of the 2014-15 campaign. In a 68-61 victory @ Bradley (11/19/14), Appolon tied a career high in caroms by grabbing a game-high nine rebounds while also contributing seven points and a pair of steals. Appolon also chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and two steals in a 71-54 victory over ULM (11/27/14), marking the first time he’s reached double figures in scoring in 2014-15. Over the last two years, RMU is 4-1 (.800) when Appolon scores at least 10 points in a game. Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for Robert Morris over the last eight seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of 2007-08, Robert Morris owns a record of 119-19 (.862) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 114-17 (.870) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s five seasons as head coach, Robert Morris has posted a record of 62-13 (.827) when outrebounding its opponent. Comeback Kids - Robert Morris proved throughout the 2013-14 campaign that no lead was safe for an opponent, and it didn’t take long this year for the Colonials to show it wasn’t a fluke. In a 68-61 victory @ Bradley (11/19/14), RMU fell behind in the first half, 27-12. RMU climbed out of the 15-point deficit to earn the victory, marking the 16th time the Colonials have climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. Protect The Rim - It’s early in the 2014-15 campaign, but if there is one thing that freshman forward Elijah Minnie has proven, it’s that he can be a force in the paint on the defensive end. In helping the Colonials post six blocks @ North Carolina (11/16/14) in RMU’s first game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, Minnie rejected a career-high three shots. Through eight games, Minnie owns 10 blocks, an average of 1.25 per contest that ranks fourth in the Northeast Conference. On The Offensive - En route to earning its second consecutive Northeast Conference regular-season title in 2014 thanks to a record of 14-2 (.875), RMU posted a mark of 4-0 last season against league opponents when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor. In four seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a mark of 24-4 (.857) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field, including a perfect mark of 18-0 against NEC opponents. Broken down against league foes, Robert Morris is 16-0 in the regular season and 2-0 in the NEC Tournament when converting at least half of its shots from the floor. Moving On Up - RMU’s 66-60 victory @ Saint Francis U. (2/13/14) helped head coach Andrew Toole move into second place all-time in program history for career victories. In his fifth season at Robert Morris in 2014-15, Toole has compiled a career record of 92-56 (.622) and in 2013-14 moved from fourth to second all-time in program history for career victories by a head coach. He surpassed former RMU head coach Mike Rice, who posted a 73-31 (.702) mark in three seasons guiding the Colonials from 2007 to 2010, as well as former head coach Mark Schmidt (2001-07), who in six seasons posted a record of 82-90 (.477). RMU’s all-time leader in victories is former head coach Jarrett Durham, who went 157-183 (.462) in 12 seasons from 1984 to 1996. Did You Know? Forwards Lucky Jones (246) and Aaron Tate (158) were RMU’s top two rebounders in 2013-14, combining to finish with 404 caroms on the year. Jones and Tate are just the sixth duo in school history to combine for at least 400 rebounds in a season and the first since former Colonials Jeremy Chappell and Rob Robinson combined for exactly 400 caroms during the 2008-09 campaign. So far in 2014-15, Jones and Tate have combined for 58 rebounds, with Jones posting a team-high 5.5 caroms per contest and Tate owning 14 rebounds through six games.

Did You Know? Robert Morris enters the 2014-15 campaign having paced the Northeast Conference against league foes in steals for six of the last seven seasons, including a league-high 8.06 per game in 2013-14. The Colonials have also led the circuit three straight seasons under fifth-year head caoch Andrew Toole entering the 2014-15 season. In 16 games against league foes last year, a trio of players recorded at least 20 steals. Guard Karvel Anderson led the way with 26 thefts, an average of 1.63 per game that ranked sixth individually in the NEC. Forward Lucky Jones ranked one spot behind Anderson in seventh place in the NEC against league opponents with an average of 1.44 steals per game, while guard Anthony Myers-Pate ranked ninth (1.31).

Block Party - Forward Stephan Bennett is RMU’s active leader in blocked shots, as he enters Saturday’s game against Duquesne with 54 rejections. Bennett is 25 blocks shy of moving into the top five all-time in career rejections and has a shot at breaking the career record of 101 that is held by former center Magdi Billal (1987-92). Put Me In, Coach - Forward Lucky Jones enters Saturday’s tilt against Duquesne as RMU’s active leader for consecutive games played at 63. Jones had earned 18 consecutive starting assignments before coming off the bench in a 71-54 victory over ULM (11/27/14). Overall, Jones has appeared in 113 career games, including 81 starts. Barring injury, Jones could establish a new Robert Morris career record for games played in his final season of eligiblity in 2014-15. Currently owning the record is former point guard Anthony Myers-Pate, who appeared in 137 games from 2010 to 2014. Jones also has an opportunity to become just the sixth player in school history to start at least 100 games should he earn 19 more starting assignements in 2014-15. In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 71-70 overtime win over St. Francis Brooklyn (2/22/14) that helped the Colonials clinch the 2014 Northeast Conference regular-season championship, forward Lucky Jones became the latest member of the Colonials to hit a buzzer beater for RMU. Jones hit a layup off an offensive rebounds with 3.1 seconds left in the extra frame to lift Robert Morris to the win. Rare Air - Forward Lucky Jones has an opportunity to join select company in his final season of eligibility in 2014-15. Jones enters Saturday’s game vs. Duquesne with career totals of 1,292 points, 706 rebounds and 150 three-pointers and has an opportunity to join former guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) as the only players in school history to eclipse career totals of 1,500 points, 600 rebounds and 200 three-pointers. Chappell, who was named the 2006 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year in addition to earning 2009 NEC Player of the Year accolades, ranks third in school history in points (1,875) and sixth in rebounds (681) while owning the RMU career school record for three-pointers with 243. Jones currently ranks fourth at Robert Morris in career boards and is also on pace to conclude his career ranked in the top five all-time in scoring. Freebies - A big reason forward Lucky Jones has an opportunity to finish as one of the top five scorers in program history is due to his ability to get to the charity stripe. Through the first eight games of the 2014-15 campaign, Jones has converted 24 of his 34 attempts at the free-throw line, a success rate of 70.6 percent that is tied for 13th in the Northeast Conference. Jones owns a career percentage of 79.3 percent (360-for-454), which ranks just outside the top 10 all-time at Robert Morris. Jones has an outside shot of breaking the career record for free throws in his final season, as the mark of 495 is held by former point guard Velton Jones (2008-13). Lucky Jones owns the RMU singlegame record for most free throws without a miss when he went 13-for-13 in a 60-48 win over Saint Francis U. (2/6/13). Protect This House - Thanks to a 72-61 victory over Campbell (12/18/13), Robert Morris notched victory No. 250 at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Protecting its home court at “The Chuck” has become a key part to RMU’s success over the last decade. Since the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials have posted a record of 106-29 (.785) at home, including a mark of 64-16 (.800) against Northeast Conference opponents.

Robert Morris celebrates its 30th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2014-15. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of six times in the last 29 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009. The 2009 NEC Tournament men’s basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris at the Sewall Center:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris has become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.24 three-pointers per contest, ahead of LIU Brooklyn (7.20). Leading Robert Morris so far in 2014-15 is junior guard Rodney Pryor, who has drained 21 three-pointers, an average of 2.63 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign ... Team 1. Robert Morris 2. LIU Brooklyn 3. St. Francis Brooklyn 4. Wagner 5. Central Conn. NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010

Robert Morris Historical Tidbits In The Beginning - Robert Morris was the first institution to jump directly from the junior college ranks to NCAA Division I. RMU played basketball at the junior college level for 13 seasons from 1963 to 1976, posting a record of 287-58 (.832) under head coach Gus Krop. Krop led the Colonials to a record of 30-1 (.968) in 1968-69 in its sixth season as a junior college program, with its only loss a 79-76 setback to Paducah (Ky.) in the national title game. In his time leading Robert Morris, Krop coached nine All-Americans and also recruited Earl Cureton, a native of Detroit, Mich., who played one season with the Colonials when it was a junior college program (1975-76) as well as the first season of Division I basketball in 1976-77. Half A Century - The 2014-15 campaign marks the 52nd season of intercollegiate basketball at Robert Morris. The Colonials compiled an overall record of 287-58 (.832) in 13 years as a junior college program from 1963 to 1976 and since moving to Division I with the 1976-77 campaign has posted an overall record of 553-571 (.492). Combined, Robert Morris posted a record of 816-610 (.572) over its first 50 years as an intercollegiate program from 1963 to 2013. In honor of 50 years of intercollegiate basketball, Robert Morris enshrined the 1981-82 Colonials, the first squad to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 15, 2014. The First Superstar - Don Mackey (1963-65) was the only player in junior college history to score over 1,000 points in his two seasons with the program. A native of Homestead, Pa., Mackey finished his two years with the Colonials by scoring 1,034 points, and his 43 points in a 125-111 win over Walsh Jan. 30, 1965, still stands as the most points scored in a game by a player in a Robert Morris uniform. He went on to finish his collegiate career at Gannon University and was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 9, 2010. Mackey is one of nine members of the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame from the junior college ranks, which also includes former All-Americans Perry Johnson (1969), Cleveland Edwards (1969) and Ron Hightower (1971 and 1972). The Twirl - Arguably the best basketball player in school history, in his one season at the Division I level in a Robert Morris uniform Earl “The Twirl” Cureton (1975-77) averaged 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in 1976-77. Cureton still owns Robert Morris single-season records for rebounds (274) and rebounding average and is the only player in the program’s Division I history to average a double-double. He transferred to the University of Detroit to continue his Division I career and was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the third round of the 1979 NBA Draft. He went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA, earning a pair of championship rings, one with the 76ers in 1983 and the other with the Houston Rockets in 1994.

Charter Member - Robert Morris played independently as a Division I program for five seasons before becoming a charter member of the ECAC Metro Conference in 1981, which changed its name to the Northeast Conference in 1988. The Colonials have won seven NEC Tournament titles, the most in league history, and have also appeared in the NCAA Tournament seven times. Robert Morris has won back-to-back NEC Tournament titles on three occasions, including the first two championships in 1981 and 1982. RMU also claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament titles in 1989 and 1990 and again in 2009 and 2010. Dynamic Duo - Led by guards Chipper Harris (1980-84) and Forest “Bay” Grant (1980-84), Robert Morris claimed the first two ECAC Metro Conference Tournament championships in 1981 and 1982. In four seasons, Harris and Grant combined for career totals of 3,434 points, 869 rebounds, 991 assists and 782 steals. Harris served as RMU’s all-time leading scorer with 1,940 points from the conclusion of his career until 1994 and still owns the Robert Morris career record for steals (450), while Grant is the program’s all-time leader in assists (555). The pair helped the ECAC Metro Conference garner its first victory in the NCAA Tournament, as the Colonials upended Georgia Southern, 64-54, in a play-in game at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1983 NCAA Tournament. Harris was enshrined in the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, followed by Grant in 1996. Walk On The Ocean - Former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) continued RMU’s lineage of stellar guards when he arrived on the scene in the fall of 1990 and was a key part of a 1991-92 squad that claimed the program’s fifth NEC Tournament championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament. In his second year with the program, Walker scored at the time an RMU singleseason school record 614 points en route to being named the 1992 NEC Player of the Year, the only sophomore in league history to earn the honor. Walker, a native of Aliquippa, Pa., went on to become the program’s alltime leading scorer with 1,965 points and also owns the single-season record for scoring average (20.1 ppg as a senior in 1993-94) and career marks for 20-point scoring games (47) and scoring average (18.7 ppg). Keep On Rockin ... As part of the 2014 Battle 4 Atlantis, Robert Morris traveled to Washington, D.C., and dropped an 80-66 decision to Georgetown (11/22/14) at the Verizon Center. The home of the Hoyas became the eighth arena that the Colonials have played in that has also featured a concert by Pearl Jam since the band’s formation in 1990. Also included in the list is Rupp Arena (Lexington, Ky.), the Palace at Auburn Hills (Detroit, Mich.), the Prudential Center (Newark, N.J.), Savage Arena (Toledo, Ohio), the Wolstein Center (Cleveland, Ohio), the Bryce Jordan Center (State College, Pa.) and the A.J. Palumbo Center (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Who Was Robert Morris? Robert Morris, Jr. (January 20, 1734 – May 8, 1806) was a Liverpool-born American merchant and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly, became the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety and was chosen as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, where he served as chairman of the “Secret Committee of Trade” and as a member of the Committee of Correspondence. From 1781 to 1784, he served as the powerful Superintendent of Finance, managing the economy of the fledgling United States. As the central civilian in the government, Morris was, next to General George Washington, “the most powerful man in America.” His successful administration led to the sobriquet, “Financier of the Revolution.” He was one of Pennsylvania’s original pair of U.S. senators, serving from 1789 to 1795. A look at his legacy: - A portrait of Morris appeared on U.S. $1000 notes from 1862 to 1863 - Morris and Roger Sherman were the only two people to sign all three significant founding documents of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. - The dollar sign ("$") was in common use among private merchants during the middle of the 18th century. It referred to the two columns draped with scrolls on the Spanish milled dollar, which predated the U.S. Dollar. Morris was the first to use that symbol in official documents.
