2014-15 RMU Basketball
Directing Traffic - Sophomore guard Kavon Stewart put forth arguably his best game in a Robert Morris uniform in a 75-59 victory over Duquesne (12/13/14), as he established career highs in points (12), assists (11) and rebounds (7) while tying a career high in steals (4) in registering his first collegiate double-double. Stewart is the 13th different player in program history to finish with at least 11 assists in a game and the first since former guard Velton Jones (2008-13) posted 11 dimes in an 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13). Stewart enters Wednesday’s game @ Toledo ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assists (4.56 per game) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.86). Hot Rod - Junior guard Rodney Pryor returned to the starting lineup in a 75-59 victory over Duquesne (12/13/14) and led the Colonials to victory with a game-high 25 points, converting nine of his 12 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, and going 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. For his efforts, Pryor earned his second Northeast Conference Player of the Week (12/15/14) accolade of the young 2014-15 campaign. Pryor, who leads RMU in scoring at 15.1 points per game, ranks in the top five in the Northeast Conference in five different categories entering Wednesday’s game @ Toledo. He leads the circuit in three-point field goal percentage (.510) while ranking third in field goal percentage (.542) and three-point field goals made per game (2.78) and fifth in scoring and freethrow percentage (.840). The Smooth Southpaw - Rodney Pryor has settled in offensively for the Colonials, as the lefthanded junior guard enters Wednesday’s game @ Toledo averaging 17.4 points and 4.0 rebounds over his last seven games. Over that span, Pryor is shooting 62.5 percent (40-for64) from the field, including 59.5 percent (22-for-37) from beyond the arc, and 87 percent (20-for-23) at the free-throw line. Six times over the last seven games Pryor has scored in double figures, including three games where he’s eclipsed the 20-point plateau. Drop The Leash - Marcquise Reed has quietly settled in as a starter for Robert Morris, as the freshman guard is coming off a three-game homestand in which he averaged 12.3 points and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the field. Reed contributed 10 points in a 75-59 win over Duquesne (12/13/14) and also led the Colonials against Buffalo with 18 points. In four games overall as a member of the starting lineup, Reed is averaging 11.3 points per contest and is shooting an even 50 percent (19-for-38) from the floor. Marching Forward - Freshman forward Elijah Minnie is coming off a successful three-game homestand in which the rookie produced averages of 9.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 68.8 percent (11-for-16) from the field. Minnie posted back-to-back double-doubles in the final two games of the homestand, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Buffalo (12/7/14) and in a 75-59 victory over Duquesne (12/13/14). Over his last seven games, Minnie is averaging 6.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest while shooting 58.6 percent (17-for-29) from the floor. Double Your Pleasure - Freshman forward Elijah Minnie is just the second freshman in school history to record double-doubles in consecutive games. Minnie, who posted 10 points and 10 rebounds against both Buffalo (12/7/14) and Duquesne (12/13/14), joins former forward Keith Jones (1995-99) to turn the trick. Jones finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds in his first two collegiate games, turning the trick in a 75-73 victory over Vermont (11/25/95) and again in a 94-60 win over Carnegie Mellon (11/30/95). Minnie has a legitimate shot at establishing a new freshman record for double-doubles this season, as the current record is held by former guard Tony Lee (2004-08), who posted four in his rookie campaign in 2004-05. Double Your Pleasure Part Deux - In a 75-59 win over Duquesne (12/13/14), sophomore guard Kavon Stewart and freshman forward Elijah Minnie became RMU’s first duo to record a double-double in the same game since Dec. 30, 2009, when former forwards Russell Johnson (2008-13) and Dallas Green (2006-10) accomplished the feat in a 72-67 win @ Youngstown State, a span of 171 games. Stewart finished with career highs in both points (12) and assists (11), while Minnie recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. It also marks the first time a pair of Colonials have recorded a double-double in the same game at the Charles L. Sewall Center since former Colonials A.J. Jackson (2003-08) and Tony Lee (200408) turned the trick in an 89-77 win over Quinnipiac (2/12/06), a span of 122 contests. Jackson finished with 39 points and 11 rebounds against the Bobcats, while Lee recorded 11 points and 14 caroms.

Reserve Clause - The Robert Morris bench has been the spot of instant offense for the Colonials in the early portion of the 2014-15 campaign. Despite just 10 points, a season low, from its reserves in a 75-59 win over Duquesne (12/13/14), RMU enters Wednesday’s game @ Toledo receiving an average of 29.7 points per game from the bench. The leading scorer for Robert Morris has come from the bench in six of nine games this season, and the reserves have outscored their opponents by a margin of +10.8. The group is shooting 43.1 percent (90-for-209) from the field, including 38.5 percent (30for-78) from beyond the arc, and 74 percent (57-for-77) at the free-throw line. Protect The Rim - It’s early in the 2014-15 campaign, but if there is one thing that freshman forward Elijah Minnie has proven, it’s that he can be a force in the paint on the defensive end. In helping the Colonials post six blocks @ North Carolina (11/16/14) in RMU’s first game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, Minnie rejected a career-high three shots. Through nine games, Minnie owns 12 rejections, an average of 1.33 per contest that is tied for fourth in the Northeast Conference. Steal City - Robert Morris finished the 2013-14 campaign tops in the Northeast Conference in steals, averaging 7.08 per game. It marked the fifth time in the last seven years that the Colonials have paced the league in steals. RMU is right back at it again this season, as the Colonials enter Wednesday’s game @ Toledo tops in the NEC in steals per game (8.89). In a 71-54 win over ULM (11/27/14) that wrapped up play in the Battle 4 Atlantis, Robert Morris posted a season-high 12 steals. There’s An App For That - Senior guard David Appolon has been one of the most consistent members of the Colonials to crash the glass in the early portion of the 2014-15 campaign. In a 68-61 victory @ Bradley (11/19/14), Appolon tied a career high in caroms by grabbing a game-high nine rebounds while also contributing seven points and a pair of steals. Appolon also chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and two steals in a 71-54 victory over ULM (11/27/14), marking the first time he’s reached double figures in scoring in 2014-15. Over the last two years, RMU is 4-1 (.800) when Appolon scores at least 10 points in a game. Home On The Road - Freshman guard Marcquise Reed etched his name in the Robert Morris record book by scoring a game-high 24 points @ No. 6 North Carolina (11/16/14) as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Reed established a record for most points scored by a freshman playing his first road game, eclipsing the 22 points former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) scored in a 99-94 victory @ Dayton (12/19/90). Walker, the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,965 points, was playing in his first Division I game at Robert Morris when he posted his performance against the Flyers. Reed, who is averaging 11.1 points through RMU’s first nine games of the season, was tabbed the first Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week of the 2014-15 campaign when he garnered the honor Nov. 17, 2014. Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for Robert Morris over the last eight seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of 2007-08, Robert Morris owns a record of 120-19 (.863) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 115-17 (.871) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s five seasons as head coach, Robert Morris has posted a record of 63-13 (.829) when outrebounding its opponent. Comeback Kids - Robert Morris proved throughout the 2013-14 campaign that no lead was safe for an opponent, and it didn’t take long this year for the Colonials to show it wasn’t a fluke. In a 68-61 victory @ Bradley (11/19/14), RMU fell behind in the first half, 27-12. RMU climbed out of the 15-point deficit to earn the victory, marking the 16th time the Colonials have climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole. International Waters - RMU has consistently been at the top of the Northeast Conference much of the previous decade in regard to its three-point shooting, and the Colonials seemed to find their touch from deep in a 68-61 victory @ Bradley (11/19/14). Robert Morris finished 9-for-18 (50%) from beyond the arc against the Braves as forward Lucky Jones and guard Rodney Pryor combined to go 9-for-13 (69.2%). In five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a record of 30-5 (.857) when converting at least 10 three-pointers in a game.

The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last eight seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top four totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while LIU Brooklyn defeated Wagner, 127-77, Feb. 11, 1998. RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris picked up its first home victory of the 2014-15 campaign and snapped a two-game slide with a 75-59 victory over Duquesne, Dec. 13, at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials avoided dropping their first four games at home to start a season and improved to 3-6 with the victory, while the Dukes slipped to 3-4. Derrick Colter opened the scoring with a three-pointer off a feed from TySean Powell, but RMU scored the next 10 points of the game and never trailed again. Robert Morris received balanced scoring during its opening salvo, as five different players scored. The Dukes responded with a 9-5 spurt to trim their deficit to 15-12 as Eric James provided the spark with six consecutive points. Freshman forward Elijah Minnie stemmed the tide with a dunk off a feed from senior guard David Appolon at the 11:59 mark of the first half, which ignited a 14-3 run that gave Robert Morris a 29-15 advantage. Junior guard Rodney Pryor provided the Colonials with six points, while freshman guard Marcquise Reed hit a three-pointer. Jordan Stevens would hit a triple of his own with 1:13 left before halftime to pull the Dukes within 37-30 and settled for a ninepoint deficit at the break, 39-30, after a layup from junior forward Aaron Tate with just under a minute left in the first half. Pryor, who scored 14 points in the first stanza, scored the first five points after intermission to give the Colonials a 44-30 cushion, but Colter sparked the Dukes by scoring 10 points during a 12-2 run that trimmed RMU's lead to 46-42 with 15:47 remaining. RMU called timeout and responded by scoring the game's next 14 points to take control, 60-42, with 9:52 to play. Five different Colonials scored, led by Pryor and sophomore guard Kavon Stewart, who each scored four points. Did You Know? Robert Morris enters the 2014-15 campaign having paced the Northeast Conference against league foes in steals for six of the last seven seasons, including a league-high 8.06 per game in 2013-14. The Colonials have also led the circuit three straight seasons under fifth-year head caoch Andrew Toole entering the 2014-15 season. In 16 games against league foes last year, a trio of players recorded at least 20 steals. Guard Karvel Anderson led the way with 26 thefts, an average of 1.63 per game that ranked sixth individually in the NEC. Forward Lucky Jones ranked one spot behind Anderson in seventh place in the NEC against league opponents with an average of 1.44 steals per game, while guard Anthony Myers-Pate ranked ninth (1.31).
Climbing The Charts - Senior forward Lucky Jones paced RMU against Youngstown State (12/2/14) with a season-high 21 points and also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points against Buffalo (12/7/14). The pair of performances helped Jones push his career total for double-figure scoring to 69, which ranks 10th all-time in program history. Jones enters Wednesday’s game @ Toledo five double-figure scoring games away from ninth place, a spot that is currently held by former guard Forest Grant (1980-84) with 74. On The Offensive - En route to earning its second consecutive Northeast Conference regular-season title in 2014 thanks to a record of 14-2 (.875), RMU posted a mark of 4-0 last season against league opponents when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor. In five seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials own a mark of 24-4 (.857) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field, including a perfect mark of 18-0 against NEC opponents. Broken down against league foes, Robert Morris is 16-0 in the regular season and 2-0 in the NEC Tournament when converting at least half of its shots from the floor. Rare Air - Forward Lucky Jones has an opportunity to join select company in his final season of eligibility in 2014-15. Jones enters Wednesday’s game @ Toledo with career totals of 1,292 points, 706 rebounds and 150 three-pointers and has an opportunity to join former guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) as the only players in school history to eclipse career totals of 1,500 points, 600 rebounds and 200 three-pointers. Chappell, who was named the 2006 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year in addition to earning 2009 NEC Player of the Year accolades, ranks third in school history in points (1,875) and sixth in rebounds (681) while owning the RMU career school record for three-pointers with 243. Jones currently ranks fourth at Robert Morris in career boards and is also on pace to conclude his career ranked in the top five all-time in scoring. Freebies - A big reason forward Lucky Jones has an opportunity to finish as one of the top five scorers in program history is due to his ability to get to the charity stripe. In eight games this season, Jones has converted 24 of his 34 attempts at the free-throw line, a success rate of 70.6 percent that ranks 13th in the Northeast Conference. Jones owns a career percentage of 79.3 percent (360-for-454), which ranks just outside the top 10 all-time at Robert Morris. Jones has an outside shot of breaking the career record for free throws in his final season, as the mark of 495 is held by former point guard Velton Jones (2008-13). In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 71-70 overtime win over St. Francis Brooklyn (2/22/14) that helped the Colonials clinch the 2014 Northeast Conference regular-season championship, forward Lucky Jones became the latest member of the Colonials to hit a buzzer beater for RMU. Jones scored on a layup off an offensive rebounds with 3.1 seconds left in the extra frame to lift Robert Morris to the win. Robert Morris celebrates its 30th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2014-15. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of six times in the last 29 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009. The 2009 NEC Tournament men’s basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris at the Sewall Center:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris has become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2005-06 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.24 three-pointers per contest, ahead of LIU Brooklyn (7.20). Leading Robert Morris so far in 2014-15 is junior guard Rodney Pryor, who has drained 25 three-pointers, an average of 2.78 per game. 2014-15 RMU Basketball
NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010
Robert Morris Historical Tidbits In The Beginning - Robert Morris was the first institution to jump directly from the junior college ranks to NCAA Division I. RMU played basketball at the junior college level for 13 seasons from 1963 to 1976, posting a record of 287-58 (.832) under head coach Gus Krop. Krop led the Colonials to a record of 30-1 (.968) in 1968-69 in its sixth season as a junior college program, with its only loss a 79-76 setback to Paducah (Ky.) in the national title game. In his time leading Robert Morris, Krop coached nine All-Americans and also recruited Earl Cureton, a native of Detroit, Mich., who played one season with the Colonials when it was a junior college program (1975-76) as well as the first season of Division I basketball in 1976-77. Half A Century - The 2014-15 campaign marks the 52nd season of intercollegiate basketball at Robert Morris. The Colonials compiled an overall record of 287-58 (.832) in 13 years as a junior college program from 1963 to 1976 and since moving to Division I with the 1976-77 campaign has posted an overall record of 554-571 (.492). Combined, Robert Morris posted a record of 816-610 (.572) over its first 50 years as an intercollegiate program from 1963 to 2013. In honor of 50 years of intercollegiate basketball, Robert Morris enshrined the 1981-82 Colonials, the first squad to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Feb. 15, 2014. The First Superstar - Don Mackey (1963-65) was the only player in junior college history to score over 1,000 points in his two seasons with the program. A native of Homestead, Pa., Mackey finished his two years with the Colonials by scoring 1,034 points, and his 43 points in a 125-111 win over Walsh Jan. 30, 1965, still stands as the most points scored in a game by a player in a Robert Morris uniform. He went on to finish his collegiate career at Gannon University and was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 9, 2010. Mackey is one of nine members of the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame from the junior college ranks, which also includes former All-Americans Perry Johnson (1969), Cleveland Edwards (1969) and Ron Hightower (1971 and 1972). The Twirl - Arguably the best basketball player in school history, in his one season at the Division I level in a Robert Morris uniform Earl “The Twirl” Cureton (1975-77) averaged 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in 1976-77. Cureton still owns Robert Morris single-season records for rebounds (274) and rebounding average and is the only player in the program’s Division I history to average a double-double. He transferred to the University of Detroit to continue his Division I career and was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the third round of the 1979 NBA Draft. He went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA, earning a pair of championship rings, one with the 76ers in 1983 and the other with the Houston Rockets in 1994.
Charter Member - Robert Morris played independently as a Division I program for five seasons before becoming a charter member of the ECAC Metro Conference in 1981, which changed its name to the Northeast Conference in 1988. The Colonials have won seven NEC Tournament titles, the most in league history, and have also appeared in the NCAA Tournament seven times. Robert Morris has won back-to-back NEC Tournament titles on three occasions, including the first two championships in 1981 and 1982. RMU also claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament titles in 1989 and 1990 and again in 2009 and 2010. Dynamic Duo - Led by guards Chipper Harris (1980-84) and Forest “Bay” Grant (1980-84), Robert Morris claimed the first two ECAC Metro Conference Tournament championships in 1981 and 1982. In four seasons, Harris and Grant combined for career totals of 3,434 points, 869 rebounds, 991 assists and 782 steals. Harris served as RMU’s all-time leading scorer with 1,940 points from the conclusion of his career until 1994 and still owns the Robert Morris career record for steals (450), while Grant is the program’s all-time leader in assists (555). The pair helped the ECAC Metro Conference garner its first victory in the NCAA Tournament, as the Colonials upended Georgia Southern, 64-54, in a play-in game at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, in the 1983 NCAA Tournament. Harris was enshrined in the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995, followed by Grant in 1996. Walk On The Ocean - Former guard Myron Walker (1990-94) continued RMU’s lineage of stellar guards when he arrived on the scene in the fall of 1990 and was a key part of a 1991-92 squad that claimed the program’s fifth NEC Tournament championship and berth in the NCAA Tournament. In his second year with the program, Walker scored at the time an RMU singleseason school record 614 points en route to being named the 1992 NEC Player of the Year, the only sophomore in league history to earn the honor. Walker, a native of Aliquippa, Pa., went on to become the program’s alltime leading scorer with 1,965 points and also owns the single-season record for scoring average (20.1 ppg as a senior in 1993-94) and career marks for 20-point scoring games (47) and scoring average (18.7 ppg). Keep On Rockin ... As part of the 2014 Battle 4 Atlantis, Robert Morris traveled to Washington, D.C., and dropped an 80-66 decision to Georgetown (11/22/14) at the Verizon Center. The home of the Hoyas became the eighth arena that the Colonials have played in that has also featured a concert by Pearl Jam since the band’s formation in 1990. Also included in the list is Rupp Arena (Lexington, Ky.), the Palace at Auburn Hills (Detroit, Mich.), the Prudential Center (Newark, N.J.), Savage Arena (Toledo, Ohio), the Wolstein Center (Cleveland, Ohio), the Bryce Jordan Center (State College, Pa.) and the A.J. Palumbo Center (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Who Was Robert Morris? Robert Morris, Jr. (January 20, 1734 – May 8, 1806) was a Liverpool-born American merchant and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly, became the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety and was chosen as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, where he served as chairman of the “Secret Committee of Trade” and as a member of the Committee of Correspondence. From 1781 to 1784, he served as the powerful Superintendent of Finance, managing the economy of the fledgling United States. As the central civilian in the government, Morris was, next to General George Washington, “the most powerful man in America.” His successful administration led to the sobriquet, “Financier of the Revolution.” He was one of Pennsylvania’s original pair of U.S. senators, serving from 1789 to 1795. A look at his legacy: - A portrait of Morris appeared on U.S. $1000 notes from 1862 to 1863 - Morris and Roger Sherman were the only two people to sign all three significant founding documents of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. - The dollar sign ("$") was in common use among private merchants during the middle of the 18th century. It referred to the two columns draped with scrolls on the Spanish milled dollar, which predated the U.S. Dollar. Morris was the first to use that symbol in official documents.
