Quick Stat of the Night - Despite Robert Morris having posted a record of 4-1 (.800) in home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center so far this season, one Colonial who has really struggled to find his offensive groove is redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson. Each of Johnson’s five double figure scoring games so far this season have come away from home, as he is averaging 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds on the road while shooting 53.5 percent (23-for-43) from the field. At home? Johnson has produced averages of 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest while converting just 27.3 percent (9-for-33) of his attempts from the floor. Johnson’s eight points in a 7264 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11) are a season high at the Sewall Center. Head Coach Andrew Toole Second Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 26-17 (.605). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a program in 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has been accomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournament crowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said. “Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the right direction.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659), with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in 2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league opposition and enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Above all, he is a man of strong character. He possesses all the necessary qualities to be a successful college head coach, and I am very happy for the Robert Morris community to have a person of Andrew’s caliber lead its men’s basketball program.” Fran Dunphy, Head Coach, Temple University “I certainly want to congratulate Robert Morris University and Andrew Toole as they embark on a new era of Colonial basketball. I’ve known Andy as a player and now a coach and his leadership skills are unquestioned. He has great knowledge of the game and has shown great skill in imparting that knowledge to his players.”

The defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last five seasons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest margin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have been decided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posted a 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while Long Island defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Robert Morris was tabbed second in 2006, 2007 and 2010 and third in 2008 and 2009 ... Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary’s to win it all in 1998-99, and have proven inaccurate in 22 of the last 24 years ... RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris used a 20-5 run to turn an eight-point deficit into a sevenpoint lead in the second half of a 74-62 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, Dec. 17, at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Louisiana grabbed as big as a nine-point lead in the first half and led, 50-42, when Josh Brown scored a layup with 12:26 to play, but the Colonials put together the deciding run behind solid free-throw shooting and inspired play by the Robert Morris frontcourt. Sophomore forward Mike McFadden, making his debut in an RMU uniform, scored a fastbreak layup with 11:40 to go that pulled the Colonials within four, 50-46. Bryant Mbamalu converted a layup that pushed Louisiana's lead to 52-46, but a layup from freshman forward Lucky Jones and a three-pointer from redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams knotted the game, 52-52, with 8:40 to play. Jones would gave the Colonials their first lead since early in the game with a layup off a steal, and after Brown answered for the Ragin' Cajuns with his own bucket in the paint, redshirt junior guard Velton Jones would hit the back end of a pair of free throws to push Robert Morris back in front, 55-54. The score remained that way until the 5:04 mark of the second half, when Kadeem Coleby fouled sophomore guard Anthony Myers on the way to the basket. The Louisiana bench was assessed a technical foul, with Lucky Jones hitting both ends, while Myers hit his lone opportunity to give Robert Morris a 58-54 advantage. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson would cap the deciding run with a layup with 3:51 to go that gave the Colonials a 60-54 lead. RMU held on in the final minutes despite the Ragin’ Cajuns closing to within 63-60 on a pair of free throws from Brown with 2:11 to go, but Johnson's three-pointer with just 1:39 left in regulation helped seal the victory. Louisiana, which shot 56.5 percent (13for-23) from the field in the first half, converted just four of its final 19 shots (21.1 percent) from the field in the final 12:26 of regulation. In the first half, senior forward Lawrence Bridges gave Robert Morris an early 12-8 lead with a dunk, but the Ragin’ Cajuns used a 17-6 surge to open up a 25-18 advantage with 6:53 left before intermission. Surf Board - Robert Morris has been absolutely stellar on the glass in recent weeks, as the Colonials enter Tuesday’s game against Hampton leading the Northeast Conference in rebounding defense, yielding an average of 29.9 rebounds per contest. RMU has been extremely efficient in the last four games, posting a rebounding margin of +10.0 per game. The Colonials are coming off a 72-64 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11) in which they posted a margin of +18 on the glass, RMU’s largest margin against a nonconference opponent since outrebounding Navy (11/14/07), 50-28 (+22), in a 93-77 victory as part of the 2007 Philly Hoop Group Classic in Annapolis, Md. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four seasons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 75-12 (.862) when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 71-10 (.877) mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMU has posted a record of 19-6 (.760) when outrebounding its opponent, including a mark of 5-2 (.714) in 2011-12. Streaker - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones enters Tuesday’s game against Hampton having reached double figures in scoring in each of his last 17 games dating back to last season, the longest active streak by a Colonial. Over that span Jones is averaging 16.6 points per contest. The streak stands as the fourth longest in school history, just one game shy of tying former Colonial Gene Nabors (1995-2000) for third all-time at Robert Morris. Four Score and ... In a 72-64 win over Louisiana-Lafeyette (12/17/11), Robert Morris had four players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt junior guard Velton Jones paced the Colonials with 16 points. Joining Jones was sophomore forward Mike McFadden (13), freshman forward Lucky Jones (12) and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams (10). In seven of RMU’s 11 games so far this season, four Colonials have scored in double figures, with Robert Morris owning a record of 5-2 (.714) in those contests. In the two seasons Andrew Toole has been the head coach at Robert Morris, the Colonials are 11-5 (.688) when at least four players score in double figures in a game. The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most consistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in 2011-12. Through the first 11 games of the year, Johnson has grabbed a team-high 65 boards, an average of 5.9 per game. The program’s active leading rebounder with 453 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player in school history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. Based on his current rebounding average, Johnson is on pace to become the 21st player in school history to accumulate 500 career rebounds Thursday, Jan. 19, @ Fairleigh Dickinson. 30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over LouisianaLafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35 times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 11 games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 26 free-throw attempts per contest.

Williams, who shot 48.4 percent (30for-62) from long range against the NEC, joined former Colonials Aaron Thomas, Derek Coleman and Jimmy Langhurst. Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04 against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent (51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurst paced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).

2010-11 RMU Basketball

Luck of the Draw - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence on the glass for Robert Morrs in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, as he enters Tuesday’s game against Hampton ranked second for RMU in rebounding with an average of 5.4 per contest. Jones was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week (12/5/11) after averaging 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in victories over Fairleigh Dickinson (12/1/11) and Monmouth (12/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Jones produced a season-high 15 points to pace the Colonials in the win over the Hawks and owns a career high of 13 rebounds, which he set in RMU’s season-opening victory over Rider (11/11/11) at the Sewall Center. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three seasons, as the redshirt junior enters Tuesday’s game against Hampton owning the longest active streak for both games played and games started. Jones has played in 78 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and has earned 63 straight starts. Jones owns 73 career starts overall, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career starts with 38. Jones and Johnson have each appeared in 78 consecutive games for RMU, the longest active streak, while sophomore guard Anthony Myers is next, having appeared in 43 consecutive games. Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coach Andrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Thanks to a 72-64 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), Robert Morris improved to 73-14 (.839) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points, including a mark of 22-8 ( .733) under Toole. Streak Snapped - One of the longest streaks in school history at Robert Morris was snapped in a 51-44 win over La Salle (11/25/11) as part of the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Colonials finished 0-for-6 from beyond the arc against the Explorers, snapping a streak of 532 consecutive games in which RMU hit at least one three-pointer in a game. Coincidentally, RMU also finished 0-for-6 from downtown the last time it failed to hit a three-pointer but also won, posting an 84-66 victory over Long Island (2/20/93) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Steal City - The defensive pressure Robert Morris has turned up in its 8-3 start to the 2011-12 campaign shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Colonials have forced 180 turnovers in their first 11 games, recording 87 steals. In a 66-54 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (12/1/11) in its 2011-12 Northeast Conference opener, RMU recorded 12 thefts, including a career-high four steals from freshman forward Lucky Jones. So far this season the Colonials are averaging 7.91 steals per contest, which ranks third in the Northeast Conference. In two seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, RMU owns a record 8-4 (.667) when finishing with at least 10 steals in a game. In The Clutch - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones came through with one of the biggest shots of his career in a 64-62 victory @ No. 2 seed Quinnipiac (3/6/11) in the semifinals of the 2011 NEC Tournament, hitting a jumper with 4.3 seconds to play to give the Colonials the victory. Jones, who finished with 13 points, eight assists and three steals in the win over the Bobcats, added his name to a pantheon of greats at RMU that has sank a game-winning shot in final 15 seconds of a game. 2010-11 RMU Basketball

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. A look at the year-by-year record for Robert Morris playing at home since the opening of the Sewall Center in 1985:

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still tops in the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.08 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.01 three-pointers a game. In 201011, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A breakdown of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ... Team 1.
