Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team closes out a two-game road trip and in the process concludes its 2012-13 non-conference schedule Thursday with an 8:00 p.m. tip against Arkansas at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. The Colonials, winners of five straight and seven of their last eight contests, are coming off a 66-61 victory @ LouisianaLafayette (12/18/12) to open the road swing. Junior guard Karvel Anderson paced RMU in the win over the Ragin’ Cajuns with 17 points, while redshirt junior guard Coron Williams scored 16 points on the strength of a 5-for-9 showing from beyond the arc. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones contributed 11 points and five assists. During its five-game winning streak, Robert Morris is outscoring its opponents, 73.6 ppg to 63.6 ppg, and is converting 43.9 percent (54-for-123) of its attempts from beyond the arc. Upon completion of its tilt with the Razorbacks, the Colonials will have two weeks off before opening Northeast Conference action with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Bryant at the Charles L. Quick Stat of the Night - Robert Morris carries a five-game winning streak into Thursday’s game @ Arkansas due in large part to its ability to convert from long range, and the top two shooters for the Colonials have been junior guards Karvel Anderson and Coron Williams. Combined, the duo have shot 54.8 percent (32-for-64) from beyond the arc over the last five games. Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 52-29 (.642).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.

Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris.

In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82.

Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12).

The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983.

Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span.

While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear.

Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or individual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole.

Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff.

RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn.

In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively.

In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh.

Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp.

Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03).

Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.

Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Straight Shooter - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams is heating up at the right time for Robert Morris. During RMU’s five-game winning streak, Williams has scored at an 11.6 points per game clip with shooting 44.8 percent (13-for-29) from beyond the arc. Williams enters Thursday’s tilt @ Arkansas coming off back-to-back 16-point performances in victories over Duquesne (12/15/12) and @ Louisiana-Lafayette (12/18/12). Against the Ragin’ Cajuns, Williams drilled five three-pointers, the sixth time in his career he’s connected for at least five three-pointers in a game. In those contests, the Colonials are a perfect 6-0.

Thanks to his performance @ Louisiana-Lafayette, Williams pushed his career total in threepointers to 163, moving him into seventh place all-time at Robert Morris.

Tattoo You - While RMU’s outside shooting has been key for the Colonials during their fivegame winning streak, the offensive exploits of junior forward Mike McFadden has also given Robert Morris a boost. Over the last five games, McFadden is supplying the Colonials with averages of 8.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 75 percent (18-for-24) from the field. McFadden enters Thursday’s game @ Arkansas ranked second in the Northeast Conference in field goal percentage at 62.5 percent (40-for-64). While it may be early in the 2012-13 campaign, McFadden is looking to become just the fourth player in school history to shoot at least 60 percent from the field during a season as well as the first since former Colonial Steve Napper (1993-98) set a single-season school record by converting 66.2 percent (96-for-145) of his shots in 1997-98.

Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones produced his best shooting night of the 2012-13 campaign in a 91-69 victory over Duquesne (12/15/12), hitting six of his 10 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 from long range, and going a perfect 6-for-6 at the freethrow line for a season-high 22 points. For Jones, it marked the 14th time in his career he’s eclipsed 20 points in a game, which is tied for ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones is tied with former Colonials Gabe Jackson (1991-95) and Keith Jones (1995-99). RMU’s all-time leader in career 20+ point games is all-time leading scorer Myron Walker, who turned the trick 47 times from 1990 to 1994.

There’s An App For That - David Appolon has had the opportunity to see more action during RMU’s five-game winning streak due to injuries, and the sophomore guard has responded.

After not playing for six straight games, Appolon has averaged 5.4 points and 2.2 rebounds over the last five games while shooting 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the field and 75 percent (6-for-8) at the free-throw line. Included in that stretch are career high totals in points (8), rebounds (4), steals (4) and blocks (1).

Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and the proof is in the numbers. Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Arkansas ranked third in the Northeast Conference in both assists (5.42 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.10).

Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 98 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (198084). He would need to average 5.2 assists per game over RMU’s final 19 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark.

Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Thursday’s game @ Arkansas having shot 76.9 percent (200-for-260) at the chalk in its first 12 games of 201213, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way is redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who has converted 84.9 percent (62-for-73) of his attempts at the chalk, which ranks third in the NEC. Also ranking in the top 10 in the NEC individually for Robert Morris is sophomore forward Lucky Jones, who enters Thursday’s game @ Arkansas having converted 81.8 percent (45-for-55) of his attempts at the stripe to rank eighth.

50 Cent - Third-year head coach Andrew Toole picked up his 50th career victory thanks to RMU’s 66-54 win @ Hampton (12/8/12). The victory came in his 79th game on the sidelines guiding the Colonials. Toole is the second fastest head coach in school history to reach 50 career wins, trailing only former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), who turned the trick in his 72nd game at Robert Morris.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. It marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. Scouting the Razorbacks - Arkansas carries an overall record of 5-4 (.556) into its contest with Robert Morris Thursday night and is coming off a 97-59 win over Alcorn State (12/15/12). The Razorbacks are led by junior forward Marshawn Powell and junior B.J. Young, who have combined to average 33.0 points per game this season. In nine starts, Powell is averaging 16.6 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds per contest while shooting 52.4 percent (54-for-103) from the field, while Young scores at a 16.4 points per game clip while dishing out an average of 3.0 assists per game. Powell led the way in Arkansas’ victory over Alcorn State with 18 points and seven rebounds, hitting seven of his nine shots from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, and finishing 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.

Arkansas Head Coach - The Razorback Nation welcomed home one of its own on March 23, 2011, when Mike Anderson (Tulsa ’82) was named the 12th head men's basketball coach in Arkansas history. A longtime assistant and associate head coach at Arkansas, Anderson spent nine years as a head coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and Missouri before returning to the Razorbacks. He owns an overall record of 223-116 (.658) in 11 seasons, including a mark of 23-18 (.561) in two years at Arkansas.

RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris extended its winning streak to five with a 66-61 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, Dec. 8, at the Cajundome. Holding a 40-34 edge entering the second half, ULL used an 11-5 run to open the stanza to knot the game, 45-45, with 15:23 remaining. Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson helped stem the tide with a layup on feed from sophomore guard David Appolon to give RMU a 47-45 edge. The Ragin' Cajuns responded, scoring seven straight points to open up their biggest lead of the contest, 52-47, with 12:49 to go. Bryant Mbamalu started the spurt with a three-pointer, while Elfrid Payton converted a pair of layups for Louisiana-Lafayette. Robert Morris followed by switching its defense to a 2-3 zone, and it helped slow down the Ragin' Cajuns. ULL went over six minutes without converting a field goal.

In the meantime, the Colonials continued to convert from deep, as three-pointers from redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, Johnson and junior guard Karvel Anderson helped Robert Morris reclaim the lead, 56-52, with 8:02 to play. Payton finally helped ULL snap its field-goal drought with a slashing layup at the 6:35 mark of the second half to pull the Ragin' Cajuns within 5654, but Louisiana-Lafayette was never able to grab the lead back. Williams would give RMU a 62-56 edge with 2:25 to go with his fifth trifecta of the contest, but Mbamalu answered with his own three-pointer to make it 62-59 with just under two minutes left. A pair of failed offensive opportunities by both clubs led Robert Morris to gain possession with 1:15 to play, and out of a timeout Anderson buried a three-pointer with just 48 seconds on the second-half clock to give RMU a 65-56 edge. Williams would hit one of his two free-throw attempts with 32 seconds to play to give the Colonials a 66-59 advantage before Payton closed the scoring with a dunk as time expired. In the opening 20 minutes, four ties and four lead changes highlighted an offensive half, with RMU taking a 40-34 advantage at intermission on the strength of a 7-for-14 (50 percent) showing from international waters.

The Race to 1,000 - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson reached double-figures in scoring for the first time on the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center with 14 points. Johnson reached double figures on the strength of an 11-for-12 performance at the free-throw line, establishing career highs in both categories. Johnson is now just 76 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, meanwhile, is 249 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that Robert Morris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Through the first 12 games of the season, Morgan has recorded 18 blocks, an average of 1.50 per contest that is tied for second in the Northeast Conference with Wagner’s Mario Moody. Based on his current average, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (200810) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish the regular season with 47 blocks.

Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (459) and free-throw attempts (633), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Thursday’s game @ Arkansas leading the Colonials in both free throws (62) and free-throw attempts (73), a success rate of 84.9 percent that ranks third in the Northeast Conference.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting assignments. Williams has started 54 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season.

A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (200810) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. 10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his fifth double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign in a 66-61 victory @ Louisiana-Lafayette (12/18/12), tying a season high with 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field, including a 5-for-9 performance from beyond the arc. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Thursday’s s tilt @ Arkansas with a record of 27-7 (.794) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the RMU roster. Right behind Williams is Lucky Jones, as Robert Morris owns a record of 14-5 (.737) when the sophomore forward reaches double figures.

The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 116 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 110 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and he needs 11 starting assignments to break the school record of 120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell (2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 91-69 win over Duquesne (12/15/12), Robert Morris owns a record to 96-19 (.835) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 45-12 (.789) when turning the trick.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. In Toole’s 81 games on the sidelines over the last three seasons, RMU has held its opponents to less than 70 points in 57 contests, an amazing 70.4 percent of the time.

Included in those 57 contests are 25 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, with RMU owning an astounding mark of 24-1 (.960) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 5853 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 23 straight when turning the trick.

RMU has had four players reach double figures in scoring a total of 25 times in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, with the Colonials owning a record of 18-7 (.720) in those contests. Included in that stretch is a perfect 3-0 record so far on the 2012-13 campaign.

On The Offensive - Bolstered by a shooting percentage of 65.6 percent (21for-32) in the second half of a 91-69 win over Duquesne (12/15/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, RMU produced one of its best shooting nights of the 2012-13 campaign. The Colonials finished the game with a shooting percentage of 50.7 percent (34-for-67), including a mark of 46.4 percent (13for-28) from beyond the arc. RMU has now won 30 consecutive games when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor dating back to the 200809 season. The last loss for Robert Morris when hitting at least half its shots came in a 92-72 setback @ Pittsburgh (2/2/09), when the Colonials shot 57.4 percent (27-for-47).

Streaker - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones owns the longest double-figure scoring streak by a Colonial on the active roster at 19 games. Jones turned the trick in the final six contests of the 2010-11 season and the first 13 games in 2011-12. Over that span, Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest.

The streak stands as the third longest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to become only the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 consecutive contests. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.

The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson.

The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still near the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.10 threepointers per contest, which is tied with St. Francis Brooklyn for the most in the NEC. In 201112, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book.
