RMU Athletics Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 23 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 25 league tournament titles among 23 sports, including eight regular-season titles in volleyball, five regular-season championships in football, five NEC Tournament titles in softball and three NEC Tournament championships in men’s soccer. The 2006-07 athletic season could arguably go down as one of the greatest in RMU’s Division I history, as a number of team and individual accomplishments highlight the year. The Colonial women’s basketball team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in Division I history by claiming its third NEC Tournament championship with a 68-66 victory over Sacred Heart. The win garnered the program its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, where the Colonials fell to N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. The turnaround came just three years after finishing with just three wins during the 2003-04 campaign. The Robert Morris men’s ice hockey team pulled off the biggest upset in school history by garnering a 4-2 victory at Notre Dame, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country. The men’s basketball team, meanwhile, got off to its best start in school history with a 4-0 mark en route to its second straight winning season. Individually, senior Stephanie Kuhn of the RMU women’s outdoor track and field team qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Kuhn, the only studentathlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in track and field, turned the trick twice in her four years on the team, also accomplishing the feat as a freshman. Off the field, a total of six student-athletes were named to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Teams, while senior Ray Gensler of the football team was named an Academic All-American for the second straight year, the first student-athlete in school history to earn Academic All-America honors twice. The 2006-07 athletics campaign followed a 2005-06 season in which the men’s soccer team added to its illustrious history by downing No. 1 seed Monmouth, 3-2 in overtime, to claim its third NEC Tournament title and first since 1994. The Robert Morris softball squad, under the guidance of director of athletics Craig Coleman, also captured its fourth regular-season championship, tying Long Island for the top spot with a 17-3 league record. During the 2004-05 athletics campaign, the Colonial softball squad captured its third NEC regular-season title with a 17-3 league record, then swept through the NEC Tournament for its fifth tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history. The success RMU athletics has had in recent years followed the seasons before it, as the Colonial football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA MidMajor National Championship according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and moved into its own oncampus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s crew team claimed two straight national

championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first. Robert Morris has sent 15 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball and volleyball have made an NEC record five appearances, with men’s basketball qualifying in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1992 and volleyball in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. He currently is the starting center for the Cleveland Browns. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. Five other former Colonial men’s soccer players have played professionally, as Steve Bell (1997) and Doug Petras (1994) saw action with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, while Rhian Dodds (2003) plays for the Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. Said Ali (2004) and Jamie Dodds (2004) signed with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Pro Soccer League and the Toronto Lynx of the A-League, respectively, in 2004. Following Ali and Jamie Dodds in 2005 was Joe Di Buono (2005), who was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL coach in Dan Radakovich, who spent 18 years as an NFL assistant and is currently RMU’s assistant head coach. Joining the football coaching staff in the summer of 2003 was John Banaszak, who became the third member of the staff with a background in the NFL. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

John Kowalski Head Coach

John Kowalski enters his seventh year as head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team, and it is safe to say that Kowalski has come full circle. Within the local, national and international soccer communities, Kowalski has been just about everywhere and done just about everything: indoor team coach and player, college head coach at the NCAA Division I and II levels, U.S. National Team interim head coach, and Major League Soccer and A-League head coach. Still, there was one coaching job Kowalski had not encountered until the 2001 collegiate season coaching women. With five years under his belt, his goal is as simple as it was when he served as head coach of the Colonial men’s squad from 1989-96: win the Northeast Conference and make a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his second coaching job at Robert Morris, Kowalski was the head coach of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, where he compiled a 26-26-4 record in two seasons as the first head coach in franchise history. In 1999, Kowalski led the Riverhounds to a second-round playoff appearance and the A-League “Franchise of the Year” award. From 1997-98, Kowalski coached the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer, leading the team to the playoffs in 1997. In his first stint as head coach of RMU, Kowalski guided the men’s soccer team from 1989-96, helping the Colonials become the first squad

other than men’s basketball to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 1993-94. During his tenure, Robert Morris was ranked as high as No. 16 nationally (1995), and Kowalski earned NEC Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1995. While serving as head coach of the men’s soccer team, Kowalski spent 10 years (1986-96) as head coach of the U.S. National Indoor men’s team, bringing home a second-place medal in the 1992 FIFA World Championships. He also coached the U.S. Under-20 team in 1993-94 and

served as interim head coach of the U.S. National Team in 1991. Between 1979-85, Kowalski coached in the Major Indoor Soccer League, spending two seasons with the Cincinnati Kids, two with the Hartford Hellions and four years with the Pittsburgh Spirit, compiling a 106-82 record. Kowalski is a 1973 graduate of the University of New Haven, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the men’s soccer team and earned an undergraduate degree in commercial art and advertising. Kowalski began his coaching career in 1973 as an assistant coach at New Haven while playing professionally for the New Britain Falcons of the Connecticut Soccer League. He helped guide New Haven to five NCAA Division II NCAA Tournaments. Kowalski also played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League for both the Kids (1978-79) and the Spirit (1979-80). On September 28th of this 2004, Kowalski was inducted into the New England Soccer Hall of Fame, which will be his third such honor. In January of 2002, Kowalski was inducted into the Connecticut Hall of Fame and in October 2002 he was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as head coach of the Colonial men’s soccer team. Kowalski, wife Pat and daughter Kaylene currently reside in Sewickley, Pa.

Stephanie Kuhn enters her first season as a student assistant coach on the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team. A 2007 graduate of the Colonials program, Kuhn’s four years playing experience under Coach Kowalski’s guidance will allow her to quickly become a useful resource for the team. Kuhn started 43 times and is first in career games played with 74. As a senior, she tied for the team lead with three goals and finished with six points. During her career, Kuhn found the net eight times, 11th all-time in school history. She also had three assists, finishing just outside the top-10 in scoring with 19 career points. A two-sport athlete at Robert Morris, Kuhn twice qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Championships in the javelin. As a senior, she finished 14th in the nation with a heave of 149’00”. She holds the school record with a mark of 165’11”. Kuhn also went to the ECAC Championships and the NCAA East Regionals all four years.

2007 Colonial Women’s Soccer

Jason Daley is entering his second season as a member of the Robert Morris University athletic training staff. Daley provides comprehensive coverage for the Colonials women’s soccer, indoor track and field and softball squads. Prior to joining the staff at Robert Morris, Daley worked for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, covering athletics at Sto-Rox High School in nearby McKees Rocks, Pa. He was the only athletic trainer for the Vikings program handling all of the sport offerings. His first position was as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Crooksville High School in Crooksville, Ohio, while working toward his graduate degree. Daley earned his Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Waynesburg College in 2005. Following that, he earned a graduate athletic training education degree from Ohio University in 2006. As an undergraduate at Wayneseburg, Daley served as a student athletic trainer. He assisted the Yellow Jackets athletic training staff while working with the football, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, men’s basketball and softball teams. Daley also served as the athletic trainer for the club hockey program at Washington & Jefferson University in Washington, Pa. Daley is a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society.

2007 Outlook The 2007 Robert Morris University women’s soccer team will take on a new look from the past four seasons. Gone are eleven letterwinners from last season, including a group of five seniors who had been the nucleus of the team for the last four years. In their place is an eager group that looks to put their own mark on the Colonials program. In addition to four seniors, all of whom have been starters, is a recruiting class that seventh-year head coach John Kowalski calls his best yet. Included among the newcomers are a pair regional all-Americans in Christy Baldesberger and Kathleen Caggiano. Both are local products and both have played on championship squads. Baldesberger won four section titles and a WPIAL championship at South Park. Caggiano won a state championship, a WPIAL title and two section crowns with Moon. It is yet to be seen how the blend of returnees and newcomers wild meld, but with eight starters coming back and an in-surge of talent, expectations are high. The Colonials will have to find some offense after losing five of their top eight scorers. However, sophomore Daneen Stevenato, the team’s leading scorer a season ago, does return at forward. Stevenato tallied three goals and three assists last season, team highs in both

categories, for a total of nine points. Joining her on the attack will be sophomore Kelly Hilderbrand along with Caggiano. Hilderbrand, who switched between forward and defense last season, had two assists while playing in every game. Freshman Jessica Stubbs, an all-section player from nearby Avonworth, will likely earn playing time up top as well. The midfield is packed with available talent. Senior Kathryn Kirkpatrick returns to her outside midfield slot and will likely be joined by junior Brenda Sasu at the other outside position. Stevenato may move from forward to the central midfield making room for Caggiano in the lineup. Kirkpatrick finished last season with a goal and an assist and

Sasu was the team’s leading scorer in 2005 before being moved to defense last season. Sophomore Chelsea Miazgowicz will like take one of the central midfield roles with senior Ashley Balics, sophomore Katie Castner and freshmen Jaimie Morra, Jennifer Tobar and Lauren Hess vying for time as well. Defensively, senior Taryn Reichard and junior Jessica Weary will anchor the central back positions. Reichard has been a fouryear starter while Weary took over a starting role last season. Senior Heather Niznik is a lock-down defender on the outside while junior Emily Schock can play both defense and midfield. Baldesberger will likely push for playing time and a starting role as will Hess. The Colonials are set in goal with a pair of solid seniors returning between the posts. Jessica Onufer and Elizabeth Moss have split time throughout their first three seasons in goal together. Both are among RMU’s all-time leaders in save percentage, goals against average and shutouts. Onufer saw the majority of time last season, putting together a 1.54 goals against average and a .803 save percentage, both single season records. Moss is second all-time in career goals against average (2.14) and shutouts (4.5).

Robert Morris University, founded in 1921, is one of the leading universities in the Pittsburgh region and among the largest private institutions of higher learning in Pennsylvania. Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005. “I have followed the success of Robert Morris University from afar, but now I look forward to leading this excellent university,” said Dell’Omo upon his appointment by the Board of Trustees. “Robert Morris has a strong foundation and rich heritage. Now, it is my job to lead in a way that builds upon this history. I am thrilled to have this opportunity.” “Dr. Dell’Omo is the right person to continue the growth and academic excellence Robert Morris University has experienced during the last 16 years,” said Joseph W. Nocito, chairman of RMU’s Board of Trustees. “He is a proven leader in academia. His background in fund raising, academics and university image building will be used to further strengthen Robert Morris University.” Dell’Omo came to RMU after 14 years at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he most recently served as vice president for external affairs from 2002 to 2005. In that capacity, he was responsible for government and community relations, university communications and the development of joint academic programs in China. Under his leadership, Saint Joseph’s was awarded $22 million in federal and state appropriations and contracts and greatly expanded its affiliate programs in China. Additionally, Dell’Omo was instrumental in directing Saint Joseph’s ongoing efforts to enhance its academic profile via a more integrated marketing communications program. Dell’Omo served as Saint Joseph’s associate vice president for academic affairs from 2000 to 2002, directing all academic research centers and institutes, international programs and sponsored research services. He was dean of the University’s Erivan K. Haub School of Business from 1996 to 2000, guiding the school and the accounting department to accreditation by AACSB, The International Association for Management Education, and overseeing the opening of a state-of-the-art $30 million business school building. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 1991 as an assistant professor of management, moving up the faculty ranks to department chair of management and information systems (1993-1994), associate professor of management (19942000) and professor of management (2000-2005). Before joining SJU, he served on the faculty at Canisius College and the Cornell University Extension Program. Prior to beginning his career in academia, Dell’Omo spent six years working in human resources in the New York City retail industry and four years conducting research on various employment issues such as labor law, collective bargaining, arbitration and discrimination. Dell’Omo earned a Ph.D. in industrial relations/human resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Montclair State University. He also holds a certificate from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. He has contributed to numerous academic journals and publications and lectured at many conferences throughout the world. Dell’Omo has remained an active consultant to universities throughout the nation, primarily on academic and management issues. Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly, have three children: Lara, an interior designer in San Francisco; Nicholas, a junior at the University of Pittsburgh; and Vincent, a senior in high school.

Robert Morris University stayed in house to hire its latest director of athletics, naming Craig Coleman, M.D., to the position Feb. 15, 2005. Coleman, a native of Philadelphia who coaches RMU’s softball team, began his new responsibilities May 1, 2005, and enters his third academic year in 2007-08. He replaced the late Susan K. Hofacre, Ph.D, who passed away in January 2005. Under Coleman’s watch, the Department of Athletics has continued to expand and gain national attention. During the 2005-06 academic year, Robert Morris placed a total of nine studentathletes covering six sports on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District II teams, the most in school history. He has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris athletics logo and mascot as well as the launching of the new official website for Colonial athletics at www. rmucolonials.com. Coleman also hired Mike Rice as the seventh basketball coach in RMU Division I history and the addition of field hockey head coach Olivia Netzler. All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 17 years. During that period, RMU has won three Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a league record of 17-3 to claim the regular-season championship, then swept through the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and advance to its first NCAA Tournament. “As the longest-tenured coach at Robert Morris University, Craig has proven with his softball teams what it means to have a consistent and successful program both on the field and in the classroom,” said former Robert Morris University President Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. “His successful record will be an asset as he takes over as our new athletic director.” Likewise, Coleman believes the timing was perfect for him to lead the athletic program at Robert Morris University. “The time was right for me to make this professional change,” Coleman said at the time of his hiring. “I have always had a passion for athletics and for 15 years I held management positions in health care. As the athletic director, I can now merge these two positions into one that really excites me.” From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School Medicine. From 1983 to 1989, he was the attending psychiatrist at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. Coleman earned his medical degree from the The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted a record of 19-45 in the previous three seasons. During his 17 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 408-368-4 (.526), including a record of 171-69-1 (.712) in conference play. In 2007, he garnered his 400th career victory in game one of a doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. He guided the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships in his first four years, and in 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom. His players include nine District II Academic All-Americans, two NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes for softball (Stephani Ehrenfeld in 2000 and Nicole Aloi in 2001) and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. During the 1999-2000 academic year, RMU achieved the second-highest cumulative team grade point average among all NCAA Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.409 grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571). Prior to his appointment as head coach at Robert Morris, Coleman compiled a record of 359-158 (.694) in 16 seasons coaching summer softball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Patriots 18-and-under traveling fast-pitch team from 1986-91. He guided the Patriots of the Amateur Softball Association to three national tournaments in his final four years at the helm.
