ROB THOMAS Head Coach Rob Thomas enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Robert Morris University women’s volleyball team. Since Thomas’ arrival at RMU, he has had winning seasons every year, boasting an average of just under 20 victories a season and seven league wins each season. In the past five years, he has compiled an impressive 42-6 league record and a 11671 overall record, which makes him the alltime win leader at Robert Morris. Under Thomas’ guidance, the Colonials finished last season with a flawless 8-0 Northeast Conference record and a 19-10 overall record. The perfect NEC record gave the Colonials their first regular-season league title since 2004 and earned Thomas his second NEC Coach of the Year honor. With Thomas at the helm over the past six seasons, the RMU women’s volleyball team has earned one NEC Tournament title and three NEC regular-season titles. The team also made an NCAA appearance in 2003 and has competed in the Northeast Conference championship match in five out of the six years Thomas has coached the Colonials. He has coached one NEC Player of the Year, three NEC Rookies of the Year, two NEC Setters of the Year, one NEC Libero of the Year and one NEC Tournament MVP. In addition, he has produced 13 All-NEC First Team honorees, 11 All-NEC Second Team members and has been named NEC Coach of the Year both in 2004 and 2008. Thomas’ expertise and guidance brought success to the Robert Morris volleyball program from his very first season as head coach. In 2003, Thomas led the Colonials to their fifth straight Northeast Conference championship and fifth consecutive NCAA appearance, where the team faced off against Penn State.
Thomas’ team ended the 2003 season with an unblemished 8-0 mark in league action and a 23-12 overall record. In his second season, Thomas directed the Colonials to another undefeated conference record and a 23-9 overall record to earn their fifth overall regular-season title, while also earning his first NEC Coach of the Year award. Despite the team’s tremendous regular season, Long Island dethroned the Colonials five-year reign as NEC champions in the title game of the 2004 NEC Tournament. In 2005, Thomas steered his team to a 71 conference record, marking his first NEC regular season loss. RMU ended the season with a 16-13 overall record, falling to Long Island in the NEC Tournament championship match. In 2006 and 2007, Thomas saw almost identical results. In 2006, his team finished with a 1716 overall record, a 5-3 NEC record and a loss in the conference championship match against Long Island and in 2007 the Colonials ended
the season with an 18-11 overall record, a 62 NEC record and ended the season with its fourth consecutive loss to Long Island in the NEC championship match. Thomas’ success in volleyball began long before arriving at Robert Morris in 2003. His career started out west at Division III University of California-San Diego, where he acted as the top women’s and men’s assistant coach from 1996-98. During this time, he helped lead the Triton women to a Division III National Championship in 1997 and guided the men’s squad to the Division III Men’s Volleyball Final Four, also in 1997. Following his time at the University of California-San Diego, Thomas worked as an assistant at the University of Memphis from 1998-2000. One of his primary responsibilities was to act as the volleyball recruiting coordinator. His biggest success at Memphis was in 1998, when the Tigers appeared in the Conference USA Tournament quarterfinals after defeating regionally-ranked University of Houston. His final stint before making his way to Robert Morris was working as the top assistant for the University of South Alabama’s women’s volleyball team. His duties at South Alabama included serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator and developing the outside hitters and middle blockers. In 2002, Thomas helped cultivate five Jaguars who were named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List and two who were named to the Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll. Thomas received his Bachelor of Arts degree in environmental social science in 1994 from San Diego State University. He resides in Sewickley, Pa. Thomas YeAR-by-Year

Kellen Petrone enters his first season as the Robert Morris women’s volleyball assistant coach. Prior to arriving at RMU, Petrone worked as an assistant coach for the Duquesne women’s volleyball team from 2007-2008. In 2004, he founded the Duquesne men’s volleyball club team and served as its president from 2004-2008. In 2006, his squad finished tied for fifth out of 32 teams in the Penn-Ohio Volleyball League and matched that finish in 2007. That same year, he was named to the Penn-Ohio Volleyball League All-Star team. During the past several years, Petrone has been an assistant coach for several high caliber high school squads, while also coaching for United Volleyball Club. In the spring of 2005, Petrone began working as the assistant coach for the Fox Chapel High School boys’ volleyball team. During his first year with the Foxes, the team was ranked third in the WPIAL and 16th in the state. In 2006, Fox Chapel captured a WPIAL Championship and was also a Pennsylvania state finalist, and this past season the Foxes made it to a consecutive WPIAL final. In the fall of 2006, Petrone began his duties as assistant coach for the Moon Area High School girls’ team. That year, the Tigers won the WPIAL Championship and finished the season tied for eighth in the state. Petrone began his playing career at Central Catholic High School and in 2004 led his team to a number-two state ranking throughout a majority of the season. That same year, he was named All-WPIAL First Team and all-section first team. In addition, he was a member of the alltournament team after Central Catholic took home the championship at the 2004 Montour Volleyball Tournament. He was named an all-section all star in 2003. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Petrone graduated from Duquesne University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and entrepreneurship. In addition to assisting with the RMU volleyball team, he is currently working as the Director of Development for The Magic Woods Imagination Company.
Thomas Blystone embarks on his first season as a student assistant for the women’s volleyball program and is a graduate of Derry Area High School. Blystone was a three-year starter at Derry and during his senior year was named second team all-section. When he was 16, he played club volleyball for Pittsburgh Elite and he is now the libero for the RMU men’s club volleyball team. Blystone is entering his junior year at Robert Morris and is currently pursuing a degree in finance.

Tyler Warden Student Assistant Tyler Warden enters his third season as the women’s volleyball student assistant. He is a graduate of Norwin High School, where he was a three-year letterwinner in volleyball. While at Norwin, Warden garnered all-section honors in 2006 and 2007, picked up All-WPIAL accolades in 2006 and 2007 and was named to the Finest-40 All-State team in 2007. With the help of Warden, his team won four section titles and owned a 24-2 overall record in 2005, including a 19-1 section mark. In addition to playing volleyball at Norwin, Warden also participated in club baseball. Warden begins his junior year at Robert Morris and is pursuing a degree in sport management.

2009 OUTLOOK Seventh-year head coach Rob Thomas has bright hopes for his 2009 squad, returning the majority of his best talent, while also adding a group of promising freshmen. “We had a lot of success in 2008 and earned a lot of big wins for our program,” said Thomas. “But I have greater aspirations in mind. We started something special last year, but weren’t able to finish. I am hopeful that the 2009 squad will be able to finish what we started last season.” The Colonials will face one of their toughest schedules to date, which includes taking on two-time defending national champion Penn State. This stiff competition will be what helps Robert Morris reach its goal as the best team in the NEC.

In 2008, Robert Morris University women’s volleyball reclaimed its status as the best team in the Northeast Conference by winning its first regular-season NEC Conference Championship since 2004 with an undefeated 8-0 league record, while also capturing a 19-10 overall record. Unfortunately, the top-ranked Colonials were stunned in the semifinals of the NEC Tournament, falling to Saint Francis (Pa.) by a score of 3-2. However, the disappointing 2008 ending left a bitter taste for the Colonials and has given them even more drive and determination to win a consecutive regular-season championship, an NEC Tournament Championship and a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2009.

Outside Hitter and Right Side Robert Morris has always relied on strong athletes at the outside hitter position that can turn broken plays into points and also capitalize on in-system plays. The Colonials return junior Charla Drabant, who was one of those players. She made an immediate impact on the squad in 2008 after transferring from DePaul and is an all-around player that is relied on both defensively and offensively. Last year she finished the season third on the team with 199 kills and fourth in digs with 184. “Charla is the type of player that pays attention to every detail regarding her technique,” said Thomas. “This has helped her develop into a more consistent passer. She will need to take on a larger leadership role with ball control and defense.” Also returning at the outside hitter position is senior Jessica Nelko. Nelko has been a key

reserve for the Colonials over the past four years and is always able to enter the game and quickly change the momentum when the team is struggling. Freshman Lindsey Monger will join the Colonials this season and will be looked upon to contribute right away. “Lindsey is a competitive athlete with a very strong arm,” said Thomas. “This combination will be a great addition to our team.” At the right-side position, RMU returns junior Addie Jennings and adds rookie Amanda Craig to the roster. “Amanda will be the first left-handed right-side I have had at RMU,” said Thomas. “I am eager to introduce this to our offense.”

in all areas of the game,” said Thomas. “She fulfilled all of my expectations as a rookie and I have no doubt she will continue to challenge opponents even more this year.” Joining Bennett at the setter position will be freshman Andrea Catucci, who will also take on the role as a defensive specialist for the Colonials.
Middle Blocker The Colonials’ middle blocker position will be one of the strongest on the team, as juniors Amanda Graham and Jaye Hellmich and sophomore Hannah Veith return to continue their role as three of the NEC’s most consistent attackers and most experienced players on the team. “The middle blocker position is the only one that remains fully intact after the graduation of several key players,” said Thomas. “I am going to expect this group to take on a more active leadership role because of their level of experience. Graham earned All-NEC second team honors for her performance last season and was second on the team with 214 kills, second in the NEC with a .312 hitting percentage and tied for first on the team with 45 service aces. She also made giant leaps with her blocking skills and led the team with 95 blocks, which included a new RMU season record 84 block assists. Veith made rapid improvements throughout the season to take on a larger role offensively and will look to improve on blocking this year. She led the team and league with a .367 hitting percentage and contributed 142 kills. In the process, she was named NEC Rookie of the Week twice. Hellmich was also a key contributor, starting in 13 matches and recording 80 kills with the third-highest hitting percentage on the team at .274. “Amanda, Jaye and Hannah are also three of the hardest workers on the team, which was made evident in their performance last season,” said Thomas. “They are always striving to get better and I will not be surprised if all of them are even better this year.”
Setter Robert Morris returns one of the most decorated players in the NEC last season in sophomore Alyssa Bennett. As a rookie, Bennett quickly made a name for herself in the league by racking up five NEC Rookie of the Week honors and two NEC Player of the Week honors. At the end of the season, she was named NEC Setter of the Year, NEC Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-NEC First Team. While also being the quarterback for the Colonials on the court, she also has a great all-around game in regards to serving, defense and attacking, which sets her apart from other setters in the league. Bennett wrapped up last season second in the NEC with 1015 assists, while also tallying 137 kills. She was tied for first on the team with 45 service aces, third on the team with 218 digs and she tied for second on the team with 57 blocks. “At 6-1, Alyssa has great size for a setter, which gives her the ability to contribute

Defensive Specialist Probably the Colonials biggest loss is with the graduation of four-year starting libero Alaina Gibson, who currently holds the RMU career record for digs. However, junior Corinne Moser returns to the squad and has shown exceptional development over the past two years. Her improvement will most likely earn her the job as the Colonials’ libero this season. In addition, the squad returns its strongest server from last season in Mackenzie Tonn. She will no doubt have an impact against opponents with that skill and will also be able to make contributions with her aggressive defensive play. In addition, she will also compete as a reserve outside hitter. Freshman Nicole Wiechecki will be added to the 2009 roster as a defensive specialist and will also have the opportunity to compete for the libero spot. Summary The Robert Morris women’s volleyball team has a great résumé with six NEC regularseason championships, seven NEC Tournament championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances. With the talent and drive of this young team there is no reason why the Colonials cannot add another title to their collection in 2009.

Fairleigh Dickinson won the first three Northeast Conference titles (1987-89) before the sport took a two-year hiatus from league competition. Robert Morris claimed the 1992 and 1993 titles when volleyball returned, but Rider ended the Colonials’ dominance with its “threepeat.” Saint Francis (Pa.) won the first regular-season title in the post-Rider era with a perfect 10-0 mark in 1997, while Wagner won the tournament title. UMBC, in its first year in the NEC, capped off a perfect regular season by capturing the 1998 NEC title and earned the NEC’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. After failing to qualify for the tournament in 1998, Robert Morris captured its third NEC championship in 1999, and then went on an amazing run by winning five straight league titles before Long Island halted the streak in 2004 with its first tourney crown. For the next three years, Long Island added three more NEC titles to its collection. In 2008, the Colonials returned to the top of the league by earning an 80 NEC record and winning the NEC Regular-Season Championship, but RMU was not able to succeed in the NEC Tournament and Long Island captured its fifth NEC Tournament Title and fifth bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials own an overall record of 97-26 against NEC foes since 1994 when the conference began to have a regular-season champion, including a 76-8 mark over the last 10 years. Since 1992, Robert Morris is 32-14 in NEC Tournament action.

Noble, a native of Mentor, Ohio and a graduate of Mentor High School, was a member of four consecutive NEC Tournament championship teams and subsequent appearances in the NCAA Tournament as a middle blocker. She was the only player in RMU history to garner two NEC Player of the Year honors (2001, 2002). She was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Sept. 27, 2008. Throughout her career she compiled 1,418 kills, which was an RMU career record until it was eclipsed in 2005. In the Colonial record books she ranks third in attack percentage (.280) and block assists (203), fourth in games played (463) and fifth in solo blocks (133). She also helped guide RMU to a school record 30 victories in 2001. She also ranks second in the single season RMU record books with a .367 attack percentage, which she tallied in 2002. Noble was named to the All-NEC First Team all four years at Robert Morris, was named NEC Rookie of the Week twice in 1999 and accumulated seven NEC Player of the Week honors during her career.
McCann was part of two Northeast Conference titlewinning squads for the RMU volleyball team as an outside hitter and was inducted into the Robert Morris Athletic Hall of Fame Sept. 7, 2002. A native of Richfield, Ohio, and a graduate of Revere High School, McCann helped guide Robert Morris to NEC Tournament championships in both 1992 and 1993. She was named to the All-NEC team in both 1993 and 1994 and was also a member of the NEC AllTournament team in 1992. In the RMU volleyball record book, she ranks third in games played (478), fifth in digs (1,539) seventh in kills (967) and 10th in hitting percentage (.171). McCann also ranks fourth in single-season digs with 526, which she tallied in 1992.
Kristie Tuxford originally hails from Midlothian, Va., and was inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame Nov. 3, 2001. A graduate of Midlothian High School, during her fouryear playing career on the Colonial volleyball squad she compiled career totals of 161 service aces, 269 solo blocks and 191 block assists. Her service aces and solo blocks currently rank first in the RMU volleyball record book, and her block assists rank fourth. She is also tied for first in the single season record book with 60 service aces from 1995, while ranking second in solo blocks with 83 in 1992, fourth with 78 solo blocks in 1993 and sixth with 56 in 1995. She is also 10th in block assists with 61 during the 1992 season. Tuxford helped guide Robert Morris to NEC Tournament championships in both 1992 and 1993. In 1993 she was named the NEC Co-Player of the Year after leading the team with 244 kills and 237 assists. Tuxford was also named the NEC Tournament MVP in 1993 after compiling 47 kills, 35 digs and 13 blocks over four matches. Also a member of the ALL-NEC Tournament Team in 1992, Tuxford was a recipient of the ECAC Merit Medal Award in 1996.

About Robert Morris University Robert Morris University, founded in 1921, is a private institution located in the Pittsburgh region offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. Approximately 5,000 fulland part-time undergraduate and graduate students from nearly every state and 40 countries are enrolled at RMU. Academic Programs Other programs open to qualified undergraduate students include: the Patriot Scholars University Honors Program, in which students follow an advanced curriculum including an honors seminar and thesis project; the Cooperative Education Program, in which students alternate semesters of academic study with up to four semesters of paid employment in their career field to gain extensive work experience and earn up to $35,000; and Study Abroad, which offers opportunities for international study in Australia, China, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Tuition, Room, Board and Fees Robert Morris University has one of the lowest tuition rates of any private university in Pennsylvania. Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005. Taking the reins of the university during a period of unparalleled growth, Dell’Omo quickly developed a clear vision for RMU as a place that provides transformational experiences for students through engaged learning. He assembled a committee of faculty, staff, students and trustees, and charged them with turning his vision into a roadmap for the future. By the end of Dell’Omo’s second year, the university had unveiled a refined mission statement, six core values, and a comprehensive five-year strategic plan to guide RMU into the year 2012. In addition, a new 10-year campus master plan was set in motion to guide RMU’s evolution to a more residential campus with a strong living-learning environment. Dell’Omo’s tenure has been marked by a greater emphasis on internationalism in student experiences, faculty research and exchanges, and academic programs and partnerships, to better prepare students for success in today’s global society. Key achievements include accreditation of the School of Business by AACSB International – The Association to Advance College Schools of Business; accreditation of the School of Education and Social Sciences by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council; creation of the Student Engagement Transcript; increases in the number of RMU students studying abroad and the number of international students studying at RMU, and the establishment of academic partnerships with schools in Chile, China, Germany, Nicaragua, Turkey and Israel. In his first four years, Dell’Omo has overseen the construction or renovation of numerous buildings, the addition of several degree programs, and the launch of a new alumni magazine, athletic logo and mascot. Known as a “people’s president,” Dell’Omo places a high level of importance on staying connected with the campus community. He has expanded the annual new student orientation and attends all freshman seminars to meet new students each fall. He holds regular Town Hall Meetings to keep faculty and staff updated on the latest university happenings, and sometimes sits in on new employee orientation sessions. A strong supporter of RMU athletics, he regularly attends Colonial football, basketball and other sporting events. He has reached out to thousands of RMU alumni by attending alumni events in Pittsburgh as well as New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Dell’Omo came to RMU after 14 years at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he served as vice president for external affairs from 2002 to 2005. In that capacity, he was responsible for government and community relations, university communications and the development of joint academic programs in China. He was Saint Joseph’s associate vice president for academic affairs from 2000 to 2002 and dean of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business from 1996 to 2000, guiding the school to AACSB accreditation. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 1991 as an assistant professor of management. Before SJU, Dell’Omo served on the faculty at Canisius College and the Cornell University Extension Program. Prior to his career in academia, he spent six years working in human resources in the New York City retail industry and four years conducting research on various employment issues. Dell’Omo holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Montclair State University, a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers and a Ph.D. in industrial relations/human resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds certificates from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management and the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents. Dell’Omo sits on the boards of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, National Association of Corporate Directors Three Rivers Chapter, the Rutgers Food Policy Institute, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania. He has contributed to numerous academic journals and publications and lectured at conferences throughout the world. Dell’Omo remains an active consultant to universities throughout the nation on academic and management issues. Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly, have three children – Lara, Nicholas and Vincent.

Robert Morris University stayed in house to hire its latest director of athletics, naming Craig Coleman, M.D., to the position Feb. 15, 2005. Coleman, a native of Philadelphia who coaches RMU’s softball team, began his new responsibilities May 1, 2005, and enters his fifth academic year in 2009-10. He replaced the late Susan K. Hofacre, Ph.D, who passed away in January 2005. Under Coleman’s watch, the department of athletics has continued to expand and gain national attention. During the 2005-06 academic year, Robert Morris placed a total of nine student-athletes covering six sports on ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District II teams, the most in school history. Coleman has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris logo and mascot as well as the launching of the new official website for Colonial athletics at www.rmucolonials.com. Coleman also hired Mike Rice as the seventh basketball coach in RMU Division I history as well as the addition of field hockey head coach Olivia Netzler. All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 19 years. During that period, RMU has won four Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a league record of 17-3 to claim the regular-season championship, then swept through the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and advance to its first NCAA Tournament. “As the longest-tenured coach at Robert Morris University, Craig has proven with his softball teams what it means to have a consistent and successful program both on the field and in the classroom,” said former Robert Morris University President Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. “His successful record will be an asset as he takes over as our new athletic director.” Likewise, Coleman believes the timing was perfect for him to lead the athletic program at Robert Morris University. “The time was right for me to make this professional change,” Coleman said at the time of his hiring. “I have always had a passion for athletics and for 15 years I held management positions in health care. As the athletic director, I can now merge these two positions into one that really excites me.” From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School Medicine. From 1983 to 1989, he was the attending psychiatrist at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. Coleman earned his medical degree from the The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted a record of 19-45 in the previous three seasons. During his 19 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 463-413-4 (.528), including a record of 198-78-2 (.716) in conference play. In 2007, Coleman garnered his 400th career victory in game one of doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. He guided the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships in his first four years, and in 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom. His players include 11 District II Academic All-Americans, two NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes for softball (Stephani Ehrenfeld in 2000 and Nicole Aloi in 2001) and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. During the 1999-2000 academic year, RMU achieved the second-highest cumulative team grade point average among all NCAA Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.409 grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571). Prior to his appointment as head coach at Robert Morris, Coleman compiled a record of 359-158 (.694) in 16 seasons coaching summer softball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Patriots 18-and-under traveling fast-pitch team from 1986-91. He guided the Patriots of the Amateur Softball Association to three national tournaments in his final four years at the helm.

The Robert Morris University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is not all about winning on the field or on the court. Academics is as much a triumph as the athletic competitions themselves. Robert Morris University is committed to the total development of its student-athletes. The 2008-09 academic year followed the trend set before it as 67 Colonials were named to the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, 31 to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll and 95 to the NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. A trio of individuals were also named Student-Athlete of the Year by the NEC in their respective sports, as Alaina Gibson garnered the honor in volleyball, Adam Lawrence in football and Mary Kate Egan in women’s lacrosse. In July of 2009, senior Tara Maxwell of the women’s track and field team became the second Colonial in three years to be named the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Sponsored by the league’s faculty athletic representatives, the award is bestowed annually upon the NEC male and female student-athlete who has exhausted his or her eligibility, graduated and has posted the highest cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the academic year. Maxwell carried a 3.99 grade point average as a manufacturing engineering major throughout her four years at Robert Morris and was one of three NEC female student-athletes to earn the award in 2009, joining Kathleen Henry of the Sacred Heart cross country program and Erin Reifsteck of the Saint Francis (Pa.) field hockey team. Maxwell joins former Colonial volleyball player Lisa Jaszka (2003-06) as a winner of the award, as Jaszka was honored in 2007 for owning a perfect 4.0 GPA as an elementary education major. Additionally in 2008-09, Robert Morris had eight student-athletes named to their respective ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Joining Gibson (volleyball), Lawrence (football) and Egan (at-large for Volleyball Media Guide
both field hockey and women’s lacrosse) were Amanda Graham (volleyball), Mark Szymanski (football), Annie Dubovec (softball), Brooke Panepinto (softball) and Susan Perich (softball). In all, 15 of the University’s 23 squads finished with team GPA’s of 3.0 or higher in the 2008-09 academic year, and nearly 65 percent of all RMU’s 550 student-athletes posted a 3.0 or higher grade point average. Since 1988, a total of 15 Robert Morris student-athletes have been named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports, including former Colonials Jeff Witmyer (2004-08) and Jim Baughman (1996-2000) of the RMU track and field team. Witmyer was a three-time selection, earning the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year after the 2007 indoor season and the honor for both indoor and outdoor track and field in 2008. Baughman was awarded the 1999 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for indoor track and field and was bestowed the honor again in 2000 for outdoor track and field. Robert Morris has also placed 36 studentathletes on ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Teams since 1992, including 13 individuals that were honored in consecutive years. Football has led the way with 10 student-athletes named to the ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Team, followed by softball with eight honorees and volleyball with six. CoSIDA’s District II covers Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The reason for RMU’s success in the classroom is simple. Colonial studentathletes receive the very best support when it comes to their academic curriculum. Evening study halls are monitored by the department’s student services personnel, and academic counseling is available from both the athletic department and the University’s enrollment management office. Graduation is the goal, and Robert Morris University strives to ensure its studentathletes attain that lofty goal.

Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 26 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 30 league tournament titles among 23 sports, including seven NEC tournament titles in volleyball, six NEC Tournament championships in softball, five regular-season titles in football and three NEC Tournament championships each in men’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball. The 2008-09 athletic season saw the Colonial athletic programs continue to rank near the top of their respective conferences, as the men’s basketball team claimed its second straight Northeast Conference regular-season championship and sixth overall. The Colonials went on to win their league-record sixth NEC Tournament championship and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s in the title game at the Charles L. Sewall Center in front 3,227 fans, the first sellout in school history. Also during the 2008-09 season the Robert Morris volleyball team earned its fifth outright NEC regular-season championship and sixth overall in 2008, posting a perfect 8-0 record in league play. The exploits of the RMU athletic program in 2008-09 followed a 2007-08 athletic season that saw the men’s basketball team claim its first Northeast Conference regular38
season title since 1992, while the women’s basketball program claimed its second straight NEC Tournament championship and subsequent appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006-07, Robert Morris had one of its best seasons in Division I history, as a number of team and individual accomplishments highlighted the year. The Colonial women’s basketball team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in Division I history by claiming its third NEC Tournament Championship and its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, while the Robert Morris men’s ice hockey team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history in January of 2007 by garnering a 4-2 victory at Notre Dame, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country. Individually in 2006-07, senior Stephanie Kuhn of the RMU women’s outdoor track

and field team qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin. Kuhn, the only student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in track and field, turned the trick twice in her four years on the team, also accomplishing the feat as a freshman. Off the field, a total of six student-athletes were named to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Teams in 2006-07, while senior Ray Gensler of the football team was named an Academic AllAmerican for the second straight year, the first student-athlete in school history to earn Academic All-America honors twice. The 2006-07 athletics campaign followed a 2005-06 season in which the men’s soccer team added to its illustrious history by downing No. 1 seed Monmouth, 3-2 in overtime, to claim its third NEC Tournament title and first since 1994. The Robert Morris softball squad, under the guidance of director of athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., also captured its fourth regular-season championship, tying Long Island for the top spot with a 17-3 league record. During the 2004-05 athletics campaign, the Colonial softball squad captured its third NEC regular-season title with a 17-3 league record, then swept through the NEC Tournament for its fifth tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history. The success RMU athletics has had in recent years followed the seasons before it, as the Colonial football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect

campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA Mid-Major National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and moved into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s rowing team claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first. Robert Morris has sent 17 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball has made an NEC record six appearances, while volleyball owns an NEC record five appearances. RMU’s men’s basketball program has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while volleyball made five straight appearances from 1999 to 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. He currently is the starting center for the Cleveland Browns. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. 2008. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.
