Robert Morris University Athletics
From its fertile beginning as a men’s basketball junior college powerhouse to one of the most diverse programs in the tri-state area, intercollegiate athletics and success at Robert Morris University go hand-in-hand. Since moving to Division I with its men’s basketball program in 1976-77, Robert Morris has witnessed its intercollegiate athletics program grow to 23 sports, including the only men’s and women’s Division I ice hockey squads and Division I men’s lacrosse team in the Pittsburgh region. Over the last 34 years, the Colonials have claimed 32 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 37 league tournament titles among 23 sports. A total of 11 of RMU’s intercollegiate athletic programs have earned at least one NEC Tournament championship, with men’s basketball and volleyball leading the way with seven each. The RMU men’s basketball program has also claimed nine regular-season championships, while volleyball owns six, football five and softball four. The 2009-10 athletic campaign saw the Colonials continue to rank near the top of their respective conferences, as the men’s basketball team became the first program in the NEC to earn back-to-back NEC Tournament championships in 16 years with a thrilling 52-50 win at Quinnipiac. Robert Morris advanced to its seventh NCAA Tournament with the victory and became a household name after almost pulling off an upset of Big East foe Villanova

in Providence, R.I., before succumbing in overtime. The RMU women’s basketball program earned its third postseason bid in four years in 2010 by making its inaugural appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), while the Colonial men’s lacrosse program, in just its sixth year of existence, earned its first national ranking by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), peaking at No. 19. The Colonial men’s ice hockey program continued to carve out a name for itself in 2009-10, producing a two-game sweep of No. 1 ranked Miami (Ohio) in January of 2010, including a 3-1 victory over the RedHawks in the fourth annual Pittsburgh College Showcase at Mellon Arena. The exploits of the RMU intercollegiate athletic program in 2009-10 has continued a trend that Robert Morris has established since its move to Division I three and-a-half decades ago. In just the last 10 years alone, Robert Morris has claimed 15 NEC regular-season championships and 13 NEC Tournament titles. Included in that stretch are four NEC Tournament championships in volleyball (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003), two in both men’s (2009, 2010) and women’s (2007, 2008) basketball and one each in men’s indoor track & field (2000), women’s indoor track & field (2000), men’s outdoor track & field (2000), men’s soccer (2005) and softball (2005). In addition, former Colonial Stephanie Kuhn of the women’s indoor track & field squad became the first student-athlete in school history to qualify for
the NCAA Championships when she qualified in the javelin in outdoor track & field as both a freshman (2004) and a senior (2007). The success RMU athletics has had in the recent years has followed the seasons before it, as the Robert Morris football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA MidMajor National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program moved into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s rowing team claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football finishing No. 1. Since 1982, Robert Morris has sent 18 teams to the NCAA Tournament. Men’s basketball has made an NEC record seven appearances, while volleyball owns five appearances. The Colonial men’s basketball program qualified for the NCAA

The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several student-athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 National Football League (NFL) Draft as a running back. In 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. Fraley has played nine years in the NFL for the Eagles and the Cleveland Browns and will don his third jersey in 2010 after signing with the St. Louis Rams. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer (MLS) as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. Shannon is one of 21 former Colonials that have played professional soccer after their career at Robert Morris, including Rhian Dodds (2003), who played for Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. In addition to former RMU student-athletes playing in the professional ranks, inaugural women’s ice hockey goaltender Brianne McLaughlin (2009), who finished her career as the NCAA all-time saves leader, earned a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of

Alongside Walton is another former NFL alum in John Banaszak, who was promoted to assistant head coach in the spring of 2008. Banaszak was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Banaszak replaced former assistant head coach Dan Radakovich, who spent 48 years in the coaching
profession in both the college and NFL ranks, including 13 at Robert Morris, before retiring. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also served as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

Bill Denniston Head Coach From the time he took over the men’s soccer program at Robert Morris University, head coach Bill Denniston needed just four years to take the program from three wins to a regularseason Northeast Conference championship. Entering his 14th season in 2010, Denniston is looking to take his team back to the top of the conference standings in even less time. The Colonials struggled again in 2009 ending with a 3-13-3 mark, a blip on an otherwise steady heading for the team under the tutelage of Denniston. Other than the previous season, the last time his team finished with a record under .500 was in 2004. The following season, the Colonials went 11-8-1 and took the Northeast Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Colonials bounced back from a 0-1-2 start to the conference schedule to finish
Joe Di Buono who was drafted by both the Montreal Impact of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL. In 13 years as head coach of the Colonials, Denniston has compiled an overall record of 120-151-35. Prior to his stint with Robert Morris, Denniston served three years as the head coach for Alderson Broaddus (W. Va.) Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D. President of Robert Morris University Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005. Taking the reins of the university during a period of unparalleled growth, Dell’Omo quickly developed a clear vision for RMU as a place that provides transformational experiences for students through engaged learning. He assembled a committee of faculty, staff, students and trustees, and charged them with turning his vision into a roadmap for the future. By the end of Dell’Omo’s second year, the university had unveiled a refined mission statement, six core values, and a comprehensive five-year strategic plan to guide RMU into the year 2012. In addition, a new 10-year campus master plan was set in motion to guide RMU’s evolution to a more residential campus with a strong livinglearning environment. Dell’Omo’s tenure has been marked by a greater emphasis on internationalism in student experiences, faculty research and exchanges, and academic programs and partnerships, to better prepare students for success in today’s global society. Key achievements include accreditation of the School of Business by AACSB International – The Association to Advance College Schools of Business; accreditation of the School of Education and Social Sciences by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council; creation of the Student Engagement Transcript; increases in the number of RMU students studying abroad and the number of international students studying at RMU, and the establishment of academic partnerships with schools in Chile, China, Germany, Nicaragua, Turkey and Israel. Dell’Omo also has committed to building the Institutional Advancement division by providing a greater focus on fundraising, alumni relations and brand building – all of which are key to supporting the university’s continued growth. In his first

four years, Dell’Omo has overseen the construction or renovation of numerous buildings, the addition of several degree programs, and the launch of a new alumni magazine, athletic logo and mascot. Known as a “people’s president,” Dell’Omo places a high level of importance on staying connected with the campus community. He has expanded the annual new student orientation and attends all freshman seminars to meet new students each fall. He holds regular Town Hall Meetings to keep faculty and staff updated on the latest university happenings, and sometimes sits in on new employee orientation sessions. A strong supporter of RMU athletics, he regularly attends Colonial football, basketball and other sporting events. He has reached out to thousands of RMU alumni by attending alumni events in Pittsburgh as well as New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Dell’Omo came to RMU after 14 years at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he served as vice president for external affairs from 2002 to 2005. In that capacity, he was responsible for government and community relations,
university communications and the development of joint academic programs in China. He was Saint Joseph’s associate vice president for academic affairs from 2000 to 2002 and dean of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business from 1996 to 2000, guiding the school to AACSB accreditation. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 1991 as an assistant professor of management. Before SJU, Dell’Omo served on the faculty at Canisius College and the Cornell University Extension Program. Prior to his career in academia, he spent six years working in human resources in the New York City retail industry and four years conducting research on various employment issues. Dell’Omo holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Montclair State University, a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers and a Ph.D. in industrial relations/human resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds certificates from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management and the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents. Dell’Omo sits on the boards of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, National Association of Corporate Directors Three Rivers Chapter, the Rutgers Food Policy Institute, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Campus Compact; and the Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania. He is vice chairman of the President’s Council of the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education. He has contributed to numerous academic journals and publications and lectured at conferences throughout the world. Dell’Omo remains an active consultant to universities throughout the nation on academic and management issues. Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly, have three children – Lara, Nicholas and Vincent.
Robert Morris University
Craig Coleman, M.D. Director of Athletics At the forefront of RMU’s golden age of intercollegiate athletics is Craig Coleman, M.D., who enters his sixth academic year as Director of Athletics at Robert Morris in 2010-11. He was named to the position Feb. 15, 2005. Led by Coleman’s guidance, the RMU department of athletics has continued to expand and gain national attention. In the summer of 2010, Coleman was instrumental in helping to attract the 2013 NCAA Men’s Division I Frozen Four to the city of Pittsburgh, which will be played at the CONSOL Energy Center, the new home of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). The 2013 NCAA Frozen Four will mark the first time in NCAA history a national championship in a major team sport will be decided in Pittsburgh. The winning bid for the NCAA Frozen Four in 2013 came on the heels of a 2010 spring season in which the Robert Morris men’s basketball team made its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, becoming a household name after almost pulling off an upset of Big East foe Villanova in the first round. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball squad earned its third postseason bid in four years in 2010, making its inaugural appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The same month, the RMU men’s lacrosse program, in just its sixth year of existence, earned its first national ranking by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), peaking at No. 19. The success for Robert Morris in 200910 is just part of a period of unparalleled growth for the department of athletics under Coleman’s watch. In his first year as director of athletics in 2005-06, Robert Morris placed a total of nine student-athletes covering six sports on the ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America District II Team, the most in school history.
Coleman has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris athletics logo and mascot as well as the launching of the official website for RMU athletics at www.rmucolonials. Six head coaches have been hired by Coleman, including a pair of men’s basketball head coaches in Mike Rice and Andrew Toole. Also hired by Coleman are Midge McPhail (women’s rowing), Jeff Layman (men’s and women’s tennis), Olivia Netzler (field hockey) and Dale Starr (volleyball). All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 20 years. During that period, RMU has won four Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a record of 17-3 in league play to claim the NEC regularseason championship, followed by a perfect 3-0 record in the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and earn its first bid to the NCAA Tournament. From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He served as the Medical Director of several impatient
units, residential treatment facilities and partial hospital programs at UPMC. Coleman earned his medical degree from The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted just 19 victories in the previous three seasons. During his 20 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 491-433-4 (.531), including a record of 211-84-2 (.717) against NEC foes. In 2007, Coleman garnered his 400th career victory in game one of doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. In his first four years as head coach, Coleman guide the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships. In 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll. Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but in the classroom, as well. His players include 13 ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-Americans, three NEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for softball and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. In 2009, Robert Morris achieved the highest cumulative team grade point average among all Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.610 grade point average. It marked the second time under Coleman’s watch Robert Morris finished in the top five, as in 2000 the Colonials finished second with a 3.409 team grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571).
