Paul Colontino Head Coach Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., announced the hiring of Paul Colontino as head women’s ice hockey coach in June 2011. Colontino, who had served as associate head coach at Mercyhurst since 2006, helped guide teams to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past five years, including earning two Frozen Four berths, and has over a decade of women’s hockey coaching experience at the Division I level. In Colontino’s five seasons with Mercyhurst, the Lakers have posted an overall record of 148-25-9 (.838), advanced to the national championship game once, made two Frozen Four appearances, qualified for the NCAA Tournament five times, were ranked No. 1 nationally in each season and won five College Hockey America (CHA) tournament championships and five regular-season titles. Immediately after Colontino returned to Mercyhurst as associate head coach, the Lakers went 32-2-3 in 2006-07, claiming the program record for victories, as they registered a ninewin improvement from the previous season and were ranked No. 1 nationally for 13 weeks. After a one-goal loss in the NCAA Tournament to the

eventual national champions ended the Lakers’ 2007-08 season, the 2008-09 squad reached new heights. Entering the NCAA Tournament on a 15-game winning streak, Mercyhurst advanced to its first-ever Frozen Four with a

victory over St. Lawrence and proceeded to top Minnesota in a thrilling semifinal contest to move into the national championship game against Wisconsin. The Lakers were ranked No. 1 for 23 weeks the following season, went 30-3-3 and advanced to the Frozen Four for the second straight season before succumbing in overtime to Cornell. While Colontino had a hand in leading and assisting in all aspects of the Lakers’ program, he specifically managed the defensive corps and worked with the penalty killing units, areas that have thrived recently for Mercyhurst. Under Colontino, the Lakers ranked among the top 10 nationally in scoring defense in each of his five seasons while allowing two goals per game or fewer on four of those occasions. Mercyhurst has also ranked among the top four programs nationally in killing off opponents’ power plays in each of the last two seasons. Colontino also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Lakers and was able to attract numerous top-tier talents to Mercyhurst. He helped recruit the 2009-10 Patty Kazmaier Award winner, Vicki Bendus, one of four Kazmaier Award finalists Mercyhurst has earned under Colontino. The Lakers have

received 28 All-CHA selections, including 17 First Team honors, since Colontino rejoined the staff, and he has helped his Laker defensemen earn eight All-CHA First Team awards in the past five years alone with Mercyhurst’s Cassea Schols grabbing CHA Defenseman of the Year honors for 2010-11. Colontino had numerous other responsibilities away from the ice for the Lakers including scheduling, monitoring academic affairs of student-athletes, preparing scouting reports of opponents, developing and conducting practices and organizing program fundraising events. Prior to his most recent stretch at Mercyhurst, Colontino was an assistant coach with the women’s team at the University of North Dakota for four years. He helped launch the women’s program with the Fighting Sioux in 2002 and was part of the coaching staff the following season when North Dakota won 11 of its final 12 games to post a winning record in just its second season of existence. Some of Colontino’s responsibilities with North Dakota included training the Fighting Sioux defensive units, aiding with video analysis and recruiting prospective student-athletes along with organizing the staff’s recruiting efforts. He also

developed, scheduled and organized an annual international hockey tournament at North Dakota. During his time on staff, the Fighting Sioux transitioned into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in their third season as a program and upset fourth-ranked Minnesota Duluth on the road in February 2006, the highest-ranked opponent the Sioux had defeated in program history to that point. Colontino, who has also been an instructor at numerous hockey camps and clinics throughout

the country, began his coaching career as an assistant with Mercyhurst in 2000. He planned and instructed the strength and conditioning efforts for the program, coordinated individual video sessions with student-athletes, helped oversee the program’s travel and equipment budgets and organized team community service efforts. In the second season of his first stint with Mercyhurst, the Lakers won a then school-record 24 games, including posting a perfect 8-0-0 mark in conference play. Before moving to the coaching side, Colontino played for four years at Mercyhurst and earned multiple notable awards in the process. While serving as a team captain in his senior season, he was named both Mercyhurst Student-Athlete of the Year and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Co-Defensive Player of the Year while leading the Lakers to a then school-record tying 23 wins. Colontino, who was also an All-MAAC First Team selection, helped Mercyhurst to a winning record in each of his seasons on the ice with the Lakers. Colontino earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mercyhurst in anthropology/ archaeology in 2000 and proceeded to earn a Master of Science degree from Mercyhurst in organizational leadership in 2002.

Logan Bittle ASSISTANT Coach Bittle ranked sixth in all-time games played (126) for the Colonials, sat tenth in career points (52) and was tied for eighth in career goals (20). He played a part in the development of the men’s hockey program at Robert Morris, helping it progress from its earliest stages – the school’s first team won eight games his freshman year, but nearly doubled that total by collecting 15 victories during Bittle’s senior season. He has the distinction of assisting on the first-ever game-winning goal in Colonial men’s hockey history, notching a third period helper to push RMU past Canisius Oct. 22, 2004, in its initial game in NCAA competition. Bittle graduated from Robert Morris in the spring of 2008 with a degree in sport management. After graduation, Bittle continued his hockey career in the professional ranks. He played for both the Dayton Bombers of the ECHL and the New Jersey Rockhoppers of the Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL).

Logan Bittle enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Robert Morris University women’s ice hockey team. In his first year on the bench for the Colonials, Bittle helped the squad advance to the College Hockey America Semifinals for the second-consecutive season and establish a new program-record unbeaten streak all while navigating a highly-demanding schedule--RMU played 15 games against teams that finished the year ranked or receiving votes nationally. Bittle also helped guide Thea Imbrogno to a recordsetting freshman campaign and CHA Rookie of the Year honors. Imbrogno ranked sixth nationally in points per game among rookies, produced a school record 10-game point streak and became just the second student-athlete in program history to earn all-conference accolades as a freshman. Bittle was a member of the RMU men’s inaugural team in 2004-05 and played four years for the Colonials. At the time of his hire,

Allison Rutledge ASSISTANT Coach Robert Morris University women’s hockey head coach Paul Colontino announced the hiring of Allison Rutledge as an assistant coach in September 2011. Rutledge, who previously served as an assistant coach at Wayne State since 2007, has earned national recognition and demonstrated success as both a Division I player and coach and also boasts eight years of experience in College Hockey America (CHA) competition. In her first season at Wayne State, Rutledge and her fellow Warrior coaches were named the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) after finishing the season with the first national ranking in program history and securing a school-record 22 wins. Rutledge helped Wayne State to a share of its first CHA regularseason championship along with breaking the school records for longest winning streak (nine games) and longest unbeaten streak (11 games). The Warriors advanced to the CHA Championship, and despite winning the regular-season series with nationally-ranked Mercyhurst, Wayne State lost in overtime to the Lakers in the tournament final. Rutledge helped Wayne State claim its second straight 20-win season the following year as the Warriors went 21-9-2 to rank seventh nationally in winning percentage and once again advanced to the CHA Tournament Championship. In addition to overseeing numerous off-ice duties for the Warriors, Rutledge supervised the team’s goaltenders and defensive skaters. She coordinated all goalie development and also managed Wayne State’s defensive corps during games, determining pairings and ice time. Rutledge guided her goaltenders and defensemen to seven all-conference honors during her time at Wayne State in addition to three all-rookie selections. In the 2008-09 season, the Warriors had a freshman goalie start 21 games and post a .898 save percentage, a mark which Rutledge worked with the

netminder to improve. In that goalie’s junior season, she finished second nationally among qualifying players with a single-season school record 978 saves and led the league with a .921 save percentage. Away from the ice, Rutledge acted as Wayne State’s academic coordinator, advising and guiding students for academic success while also monitoring their academic eligibility. She also ran the team’s video operations, analyzing game and practice tapes for studentathletes and fellow staff members. Rutledge also led the staff’s efforts for scheduling, travel and community service and assisted with the program’s recruiting and compliance responsibilities. Rutledge had a strong pedigree for working with Wayne State’s goalies as she was an All-American goaltender during her playing days at Niagara. She started 110 games in her collegiate career and ranks third all-time in NCAA history with 3,405 saves.

After Rutledge earned CHA All-Rookie honors in her freshman campaign and recorded 38 saves as the starting goalie in the CHA Championship, she posted a .929 save percentage in her sophomore season, ranking fifth nationally, and allowed a mere 2.21 goals per game. The following season she led the nation with 1,103 saves, a mark that still stands fifth in single-season Division I history, and claimed All-CHA First Team honors. Rutledge, who was invited to Hockey Canada’s U-22 Selection Camp in 2006, again surpassed the 1,000-save mark in her final season and was selected as a Reebok Hockey All-American after her senior year. Rutledge also garnered her second-consecutive first team all-conference honor in 2007 after starting each one of her team’s 35 games that season. Rutledge helped Niagara advance to the CHA Championship in three of her four seasons with the Purple Eagles and currently ranks 15th in career save percentage among Division I netminders who completed their careers with at least 1,000 saves. While her on-ice accomplishments were significant, Rutledge collected hardware for her work in the classroom as well. She was named the CHA Student-Athlete of the Year in the 2006-07 season and was awarded CHA All-Academic accolades in all three of her eligible seasons. The two-time captain also earned American Women’s Hockey Coaches Association (AWHCA) National Scholar Athlete honors after her senior season. Rutledge has instructed at multiple hockey camps across the United States and Canada and also served as an alumni panelist for a Niagara University ‘Life After Sport’ program. Rutledge graduated from Niagara magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education in 2007. She is currently writing her master’s thesis and intends on earning a Master’s of Education in special education from Wayne State this fall with a concentration in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Brianne McLaughlin VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT Coach Former Colonial goaltender Brianne McLaughlin joined the Robert Morris University women’s hockey staff in July 2011 as a volunteer assistant coach. McLaughlin had a storied collegiate career for Robert Morris before competing for her country in both Olympic and World Championship events. McLaughlin, who graduated from Robert Morris in the spring of 2011 with a degree in nursing, will assist with numerous aspects of the RMU program including day-to-day operations, individual player development, video analysis and practice planning. In 120 career games for Robert Morris, McLaughlin stopped a NCAA-record 3,809 shots, a figure that is more than 200 clear of the closest netminder. McLaughlin was a fourtime All-College Hockey America award winner and also earned national defensive player of the week honors on three occasions in her career. She led RMU to one of the biggest wins in school history Oct. 3, 2008 when she made a single-game school record 63 saves to lead the Colonials to a stunning road upset of No.

3 Minnesota. McLaughlin recorded at least 40 saves in 27 contests in her RMU career and stopped at least 50 shots on eight occasions. Less than one year after she completed

her collegiate career, McLaughlin traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia for the 2010 Olympic Games as a member of the U.S. National Team. She appeared in the team’s first game of the tournament, becoming the first Colonial student-athlete to compete in the Olympics, and went on to help the U.S. earn a silver medal. McLaughlin recently added another item to her award collection as she won a gold medal in April with the Red, White & Blue at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship in Switzerland. McLaughlin got the start between the pipes in the opening tournament game for the U.S. against Slovakia and certainly rose to the occasion in her first-career world championship appearance. She stopped every shot she faced to record her first-career shutout in a U.S. uniform despite having to face the Slovakian powerplay unit on five occasions. McLaughlin’s effort would prove to be America’s only shutout of the tournament as the U.S. squad would go on to win its third-consecutive world championship with a thrilling, 3-2, overtime victory over Canada.
