Bill Denniston Head Coach From the time he took over the men’s soccer program at Robert Morris University, head coach Bill Denniston needed just four years to take the program from three wins to a regularseason Northeast Conference championship. Entering his 15th season in 2011, Denniston is looking to build on an impressive 2010 season that featured the most points ever by a NEC team that did not make the playoffs.   Tooting a talented young roster, the 2010 squad finished with a 9-7-3 record and went 5-3-2 in conference play. Robert Morris featured seven underclassmen in the starting lineup while four of the team’s top scorers were freshmen. Even with the young lineup, the Colonials, who were selected 10th in the coaches’ preseason poll, lost a tie-breaker for a spot in the NEC playoffs and posted the team’s most wins since 2006 going 9-7-2 and 5-3-2 in conference games.   Any one of four RMU rookies had a shot at the NEC Rookie of the Year Award in 2010, but it was Daniel Calabretta who won it after tallying four goals and nine points. Miro Cabrilo matched those numbers in his rookie campaign while Prince Samuels and Luca Campos also were big parts of the turnaround.   After leading the team with 15 points as a senior, Neil Shaffer signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, becoming the fifth RMU player since 2004 to earn a spot on a pro squad. Shaffer was named to the All-NEC Second Team where he was joined by goalkeeper Toba Bolaji. Bolaji also earned ESPN / CoSIDA Academic All-District II First Team accolades while recording six shutouts.   The Colonials struggled in 2009 ending with a 3-13-3 mark, a blip on an otherwise steady heading for the team under the tutelage of Denniston. Other than the previous season, the last time his team finished with a record under .500 was in 2004. The following season, the Colonials went 11-8-1 and took the Northeast Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

In 2006, the Colonials bounced back from a 0-1-2 start to the conference schedule to finish 4-1-1 over the final six regular season games and earn the fourth seed in the conference postseason. Robert Morris lost to eventual NEC Champion Monmouth in the semifinals, ending what was a remarkable last season surge into the playoffs.   The 2005 Colonials claimed their third NEC Championship and second under the guidance of Denniston. That team finished 118-4, the most wins for the program during the Denniston era.   In 2001, Denniston earned NEC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Colonials to their first NEC regular-season championships since 1996. He followed that up by taking RMU to the NEC tournament once again in 2002. Yet a regular season championship is not the final goal for Denniston. His ultimate goal is the NCAA Tournament.   In addition to returning the Colonials to prominence in the NEC, Denniston has helped

his players move on to the professional ranks. Under his tutelage, 13 players have made their way into the professional ranks, including 2005 graduate and current assistant coach for the Colonials, Joe Di Buono who was drafted by both the Montreal Impact of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL.   In 14 years as head coach of the Colonials, Denniston has compiled an overall record of 129-158-37.   Prior to his stint with Robert Morris, Denniston served three years as the head coach for Alderson Broaddus (W. Va.) College, guiding the Battlers to a record of 37-17-4 and national rankings in each of his three years. His 1995 squad finished with a national ranking of No. 11, the first year the school participated in Division II athletics, and for those efforts he was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. While with Alderson Broaddus, Denniston also served as assistant athletic director.   Before becoming head coach of the Battlers, Denniston spent four seasons as assistant men’s soccer coach at Bethany (W.Va.) College. In each of his four years there, Bethany finished with a national ranking of No. 14 or higher in Division III, including a No. 2 ranking in 1993. In his 12 years as an assistant and head coach, Denniston has helped to develop 51 all-conference selections, five Academic AllAmericans, four conference MVPs and four AllAmericans.   A 1983 graduate of Bethany with a degree in physical education, Denniston was a four-year All-Presidents Athletic Conference selection and a three-year All-American. He was also named the PAC’s most valuable player in 1980, was captain of the 1982 Bison squad that was a national finalist and was a Senior Bowl nominee in 1982.   A father of three, Denniston and his wife, Kathy, reside in Moon Township. Troy Fabiano (1990-93)

Induction Year: 1996

Induction Year: 2001

Tony Bunbury was the first men’s soccer player inducted into the RMU Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 14, 1996. A native of Montreal, Canada, Bunbury owns the RMU single-season records for goals (23) and points (58), both of which came during the 1986 season. His 14 goals and 35 points the following year rank fourth in the single-season record book. In the career record book, Bunbury ranks second in goals (40) and points (104). While at Robert Morris University was also a member of the track and field team.

Fabiano, a native of Kenosha, Wis., and a graduate of Bradford High School, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Nov. 3, 2001. He ranks third in the Colonial record book for career goals (39) and points (95). In 1993, he was named the NEC Player of the Year, leading RMU to its first NCAA Tournament with a conference-best 19 goals and 43 points. Both those totals currently rank second in the single-season record book. Fabiano led RMU in scoring in both 1992 and 1993 and was named to the All-NEC Second Team in 1991 and First Team in 1992. Fabiano currently is in his sixth season as head coach of the women’s soccer team at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in his hometown of Kenosha.

John Kowalski (1989-96) Induction Year: 2000

Musa Shannon (1993-96)

John Kowalski served as the head coach of the RMU men’s soccer team from 1989-96 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Oct. 21, 2000. He compiled an overall record of 88-66-9 (.567), leading the Colonials to the NCAA Tournament in 1993. He also served as head coach when the Colonials won a school-record 15 games (under acting coach Peter Smith) and made the NCAA Tournament in 1994. Kowalski was named NEC Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1995, and his ’95 team was ranked as high as 16th nationally. He also worked as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He is now head coach of the Colonial women’s soccer team, a program that began in 1994.

Induction Year: 2002 Shannon, a native of Liberia, was an All-NEC selection in 1995 and 1996 and was part of the only two men’s soccer NCAA Tournament appearances (1993-94) in RMU history. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sept. 8, 2002. Shannon’s career totals of 44 goals and 106 points are both school records, and he also ranks tied for third on RMU’s career record list in assists with 18. His 16 goals and 37 points from the 1996 campaign currently rank third in the single-season record book. Shannon played professionally for the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer and also played for the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS in 1998-99.
