Karvel Anderson produced arguably the greatest offensive season in school history in 2013-14, establishing single-season school records for points (710), field goals (248), field goal attempts (486), threepoint field goals (119), threepoint field goal attempts (257), three-point field goals made per game (3.31), double-figure scoring games (33), 20-point scoring games (19) and 30-point scoring games (4).

Anthony Myers-Pate concluded his four-year career with RMU by scoring 805 career points while ranking sixth all-time in career assists with 449.

In 2013-14, Karvel Anderson (710) and Lucky Jones (499) combined for 1,209 points, the most points scored by an RMU duo in school history and just the second tandem to combine for at least 1,000 points in a season. Anderson and Jones also established a single-season school record for three-pointers by a duo with 189.

Since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, RMU has compiled an overall record of 163-81 (.668), with the 163 victories both a school and NEC record for a seven-year span. Against NEC foes over that span, the Colonials have posted a mark of 99-25 (.798).

NIT Highlights … ★

In the 2014 NIT, Robert Morris upset a No. 1 seed for the second consecutive year as senior guard Karvel Anderson scored a career-high 38 points in leading the Colonials to an 89-78 victory @ St. John’s (3/18/14), the program’s first victory over a Big East squad.

RMU never trailed against the Red Storm, jumping out to leads of 8-0 and 19-2 in the first five minutes of the contest.

Anderson and junior forward Lucky Jones combined for 38 points in the first half on 12-of-17 shooting from the field, including 9-of-12 from beyond the arc. Jones led the way with 20 points.

Robert Morris held a 74-51 cushion with 6:45 to play before St. John’s used a 15-0 run to close to within 74-66 at the 3:35 mark of the second half.

RMU called timeout to stem the tide, and Anderson tied an RMU single-game school record by connecting for his ninth threepointer of the contest with 2:45 left to push the Robert Morris advantage back to double digits, 77-66.

Lucky Jones added 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Colonials against the Red Storm, while senior guard Anthony Myers-Pate compiled 11 points and a game-high eight assists.

Men’s Basketball

★ In the second round, RMU suffered an 82-71 setback @ Belmont, with Anderson pacing the Colonials with 23 points. Jones and Anthony Myers-Pate contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Fittingly, the final basket of Anderson’s illustrious two-year career at Robert Morris was a three-pointer with eight seconds to play.

Anderson averaged 30.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games of the 2014 NIT while shooting 55.9 percent (19-for34) from the field, including 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from deep, and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) at the freethrow line. Jones added averages of

20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds, and Myers-Pate scored at a 12.5 points per game clip while averaging 5.5 assists in the two contests.

In the history of the NIT, four No. 8 seeds have knocked off a No. 1, with the Colonials owning two of those victories. Robert Morris defeated Kentucky in 2013 and St. John’s in 2014.

Karvel Anderson

2014 Northeast Conference Player of the Year Senior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the greatest offensive season in school history in 2013-14 en route to being named the 2014 Northeast Conference Player of the Year, establishing a number of RMU singleseason records. One of the most dangerous shooters in school history and despite playing just two seasons in a Robert Morris uniform, Anderson will go down as one of the purest scorers in program history. A look at some of his accomplishments …

Just the second player in school history to eclipse the 30-point plateau in back-to-back games when he turned the trick in RMU’s swing through New England to open Northeast Conference play. Anderson finished with 36 points in a 79-70 win @ Sacred Heart (1/9/14), followed by 32 points in a 71-67 victory @ Bryant (1/11/14).

Joined the Robert Morris 1,000-point club in RMU’s 2013-14 regular-season finale @

Wagner (3/1/14), as his threepointer at the 18:07 mark of the first half helped him become the 23rd member of the fraternity. In 69 career games with the Colonials, Anderson scored 1,123 points and is just the third player in school history to eclipse 1,000 points while playing just two seasons at Robert Morris.

The only player in NCAA Division I in 2013-14 to rank in the top 10 in the country in both three-point field goals made per game (3.31) and three-point field goal percentage (.463). Anderson ranked ninth in the country in three-point field goals made per game and seventh in three-point field goal percentage.

Men’s Basketball ★

Put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history during his junior campaign in 2012-13 in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals.

Anderson saved one of his best performances for last, leading Robert Morris to an 89-78 victory @ St. John’s (3/18/14) in the first round of the 2014 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) with a careerhigh 38 points. In that contest he tied the RMU single-game record for three-pointers thanks to nine against the Red Storm, joining former guards Scott Shepherd (1988-91) and Gene Nabors (1995-2000) to turn the trick.

Anderson had a flair for the dramatic in his final season at Robert Morris in 2013-14, as on four separate occasions he scored at least 20 points in a half. Anderson’s biggest outburst came in a 73-64 victory over LIU Brooklyn (2/20/14) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, when he scored all of his gamehigh 26 points in the second half, including 20 in the final 6:43 of the contest to help lift the Colonials out of a 16-point deficit. Anderson’s outburst against the Blackbirds marks the most points scored in a half in school history, eclipsing the 25 points former guard Gene Nabors (1995-2000) scored in the second half of an 80-61 win over Mount St. Mary’s (3/4/00) in the semifinals of the 2000 Northeast Conference Tournament in Trenton, N.J., at Sovereign Bank Arena.

Late in the 2013-14 season, Anderson had a stretch where he converted 31 consecutive attempts at the free-throw line, the longest streak on record in program history. Anderson’s streak began in a 73-64 victory over LIU Brooklyn (2/20/14) when he converted his final five shots from the charity stripe and ended when he missed his third attempt at the stripe in an 89-78 victory @ St. John’s (3/18/14) in the first round of the 2014 NIT. Included during that stretch was a 12-for-12 performance against Saint Francis U. (3/8/14) in the NEC Tournament semifinals.

Anderson concluded his senior season at Robert Morris in 2013-14 by being selected to participate in the 2014 Reese’s Division I College All-Star Game (4/4/14) as part of festivities for the 2014 NCAA Final Four in Arlington, Texas. Anderson earned the start at guard for the East squad at AT&T Stadium and finished with 12 points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal in 21 minutes of action in an 87-75 victory over the West All-Stars.

Colonials In The Community The Robert Morris Department of Athletics continues to be an active member of the community, both on a local and regional level. Some highlights of the 2013-14 academic year …

The RMU women’s ice hockey squad volunteered at the West Hills Health & Rehabilitation Center in Coraopolis, Pa., in October of 2013, visiting with elderly patients and making caramel apples. Robert Morris assistant coach Jinelle Siergiej brought her two dogs with her as part of the visit.

In September of 2013, the RMU women’s ice hockey squad participated in the Pittsburgh 2013 Walk to Cure Diabates at Schenley Park in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The Colonials raised a total $3,868.54 to support the cause. Over 200 teams registered for the two-mile walk, raising close to $500,000.

The RMU women’s rowing team took part in the Pittsburgh Walk to Cure Diabetes, which took place in Schenley Park September 21, 2013. A member of the team, as well as head coach Midge McPhailBurks’ daughter, has juvenile diabetes.

The Robert Morris SAAC, in conjunction with the Duquesne SAAC, sponsored its third annual food drive when the Colonials and Dukes squared off on the gridiron October 19, 2013, at Joe Walton Stadium. Items collected by both groups were turned over to the West Hills Food Pantry in

Moon Township, Pa., a non-profit charitable organization that serves between 150 and 200 families in the community and has never closed in its 23 years of operation. Combined, the SAAC’s between RMU and Duquesne donated over 2,000 items to the West Hills Food Pantry.

The Robert Morris University men’s and women’s basketball teams again took part in the Battle for the Books throughout the course of the 2013-14 season. Made possible by a grant from the Northeast Conference, the two programs provided over 10,000 local youth in our eight immediate public school districts the opportunity to experience NCAA Division I basketball while assisting their schools. As part of the Battle for the Books, students in 20 area schools were provided with “Admit 2” vouchers to every home regular season men’s and women’s

basketball game for the 2013-2014 season. The school with the highest number of vouchers redeemed received $1,000 for its school library. The school with the second highest percentage of vouchers redeemed received $500 for its library. Elementary schools in the Moon Area District took home the top two prizes, Bon Meade (first) and Allard (second). Over 500 vouchers were redeemed.

The Robert Morris women’s basketball team hosted its third “Elementary School Game”, a 67-48 victory over Marshall at the Charles L. Sewall Center Nov. 12, 2013. More than 600 students from the Moon Area School District attended the game.

Members of the RMU women’s ice hockey squad held a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh during its game against Maine, Nov. 29, 2013. Fans made a donation instead of paying a normal admission fee, and those funds were used to go shopping for toys and games for the holiday season. Robert Morris raised over $700 to purchase items for Children’s Hospital.

The RMU men’s hockey team announced the addition of Alex Zimmerman through the Team IMPACT Foundation. Team IMPACT, a non-profit chartered to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening diseases, help children get drafted into local college athletic programs and become an official member of the team for the duration of their treatment and beyond. The child

gains strength, camaraderie and support and the student-athletes are taught lessons about courage, resiliency and life perspective that they can’t learn in the classroom. Through a structured relationship management methodology, they establish and cultivate these relationships to ensure a successful experience for the families and teams involved. In addition to its involvement with Team IMPACT, members of the RMU men’s ice hockey team do individual coaching and help out with practices with the Artic Foxes, a youth hockey organization.

In December of 2013, the RMU women’s ice hockey squad teamed up with the Chatham University women’s hockey team

for a fundraiser that benefits the people of North Hills Community Outreach. Members of both squads put together “move-in” baskets containing such items as toilet paper, shampoo and soap to help the organization, which places people off the streets into a rapid re-housing program.

The RMU men’s ice hockey squad hosted Men’s Cancer Awareness weekend when it hosted Holy Cross at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday, Nov. 15, and Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013. The weekend featured a silent auction, 50/50 raffle tickets and post-game autograph sessions as well ceremonial puck drops prior to both games. Former Robert Morris captain Chris Kushneriuk and Beth

For the past seven years, members of the Robert Morris men’s basketball team have taken part in after-school activities at the Mooncrest Community Center in Moon Township, Pa. Studentathletes take part in activities like dodge ball, kickball and other activities to help kids become active while also assisting in tutoring with homework.

Joining the men’s basketball squad in assisting in after-school activities at the Mooncrest Community Center in 2013-14 was the RMU men’s lacrosse squad. As part of their community service, the Colonials held a Halloween party and purchased over $300 of Christmas gifts for the kids.

Over the holiday season the RMU women’s ice hockey team visited both the Ronald McDonald House of Pittsburgh and the Caring Heights Nursing Center in Coraopolis, Pa. The squad also took part in the Beaver County Polar Plunge in January of 2014, which took place at the Landing Marina in Beaver, Pa., and raised money for the Special Olympics.

RMU’s eighth annual Skate for the Cure weekend was held at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday, Feb. 7, and Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, when the Colonials hosted Syracuse. Founded by College Hockey America (CHA) during the 2006-07 season, Skate for the Cure is a league-wide initiative that involves member institutions dedicating one or two games toward raising funds and awareness for an organization of their choice. The RMU women’s ice hockey squad dedicated its weekend to breast cancer.

The Robert Morris men’s ice hockey team held its first Military Appreciation Night when it hosted Niagara at the RMU Island Sports Center Feb. 15, 2014. All military personnel, active or veteran, received free admission and a five-dollar concession stand voucher. The Colonials wore camouflage jerseys, which were auctioned off in partnership with Hockey Saves, a non-profit organization that supports military personnel and their families by providing them with ice time, hockey equipment, care packages and tickets to live events. Proceeds went to the RMU Veterans’ Emergency Fund.

Junior Becky Jay of the RMU volleyball squad and juniors Marissa Polk and Alexandra Zielinski of the women’s cross country and track & field squads, each of whom are nursing majors, helped run a clinic in Nicaragua. As part of their trip, the trio joined other nursing majors in helping with medical and community needs.

The RMU Adopt a Highway litter cleanup project is in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Robert Morris has been part of the program since 1996, and every year, Colonial student-athletes on two occasions clean a two-mile stretch on I-376 in Moon Township.

Members of the RMU Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) presented a donation to representatives of the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania in December of 2013. Senior Leah Prentice of the women’s soccer team and senior Luke Sweeney of the football team presented the check to Anthony Canzonieri and Ben Stahl of the VLP. The SAAC raised money for the VLP in conjunction with RMU’s Veterans Education and Training Services (VETS) Center as part of a Military Appreciation Day event at the Colonials’ home football Nov. 2 against Bryant.

Robert Morris continued its popular youth soccer clinics, which are held each spring in Joe Walton Stadium and annually draw over 100 participants.

As part of her student teaching, junior Erica Robb of the volleyball team spent two weeks at a catholic elementary school in Belmopan, Belize. Robb’s class featured 31 students.

Student-athletes with the RMU women’s track & field team took part in various community service activities throughout the year. Freshman Samantha Black volunteered at Saint Mary’s nursing home in Erie, Pa., while freshman Marlee Zubek participated with the RMU Lead Program to clear paths and create new ones at the Hollow Oak Land Trust. Sophomore Michelle Watson was a counselor at Royal Family Kids Camp for abused and neglected kids, while freshman Jayme Rutkowski volunteered at Girls Hope of Pittsburgh, talking to girls about eating disorders and body image.

Members of the RMU volleyball team took part in a special community service project by participating as volunteers at the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Special Olympics Bowling

Sectional at AMF Lanes in Mt. Lebanon, Pa. Student-athletes interacted with the Special Olympics bowlers in addition to serving as lane monitors and scorekeepers during the competition.

Free youth basketball clinics, which are sponsored by Coldwell Banker Real Estate Services Airport Office in the fall and Heritage Valley Health System in the spring, continue to be one of the highlights of RMU’s community service program. The clinics teach approximately 200 youths annually the game of basketball, and the 2013 fall clinic included a canned food drive that donated over 100 non-perishables to the West Hills Food Pantry.

Throughout the course of the 2013-14 season, both the RMU men’s and women’s ice hockey teams held various community programs. Included this year were four “Skate with the Colonials”

Robert Morris University nights, which were free to fans that brought their own skates. Robert Morris also hosted Boy and Girl Scout Nights, giving free admission to scouts.

Also participating in community service activities from the RMU women’s track & field squad were junior Melissa Luther, sophomore Dounia Zinbi and freshmen April Krivoniak. Luther volunteered at the Heitz of Heaven 5K Run in September of 2013, which took place on Neville Island. Zinbi, also a member of the RMU women’s tennis team, helped build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Krivoniak, who also plays volleyball for the Colonials, volunteered at World Vision, which helps sort boxes of school supplies that are shipped to underprivileged nations.

The Robert Morris University Department of Athletics teamed up with the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots initiative for the

sixth consecutive year, collecting over 200 toys. Colonial fans that donated a toy were given free admission to five different RMU

home intercollegiate athletic events, including football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s ice hockey.

Dalton Signs FreeAgent Deal With Detroit Lions Robert Morris offensive lineman A.J. Dalton (2010-13) signed a free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL) in May of 2014. Dalton made 37 starts in his four years for the Colonials on the offensive line, beginning his career at guard before shifting to left tackle for the majority of his tenure. Dalton was named to the 2014 The Sports Network All-America Second Team and made each of his final 31 starts at left tackle.

Robert Morris and Bowling Green, in conjunction with the Toledo Walleye, will play an outdoor hockey game Jan. 3, 2015. The programs will play as part of the Walleye’s Winterfest at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio. The Walleye will hold a 10-day community winter celebration at both Huntington Center Arena and Fifth Third Field from Dec. 26, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015. The Falcons and Colonials will play Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at noon as part of the event.  “It’s an honor and a privilege to be invited to participate in a great outdoor hockey event as part of Winterfest,” Robert Morris Athletics

Director Craig Coleman, M.D., said. “I know that our players and coaching staff are extremely excited to take on a great opponent in a great venue.”  Fifth Third Field, the home of the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, will be converted from a baseball field into an outdoor hockey rink. The full-size 200’ x 85’ rink will stretch across the infield with the two goals near first and third base. The Toledo Walleye will play two games on the rink, including a 5:30 pm game on Jan. 3 following the Bowling Green/Robert Morris contest. There will also be youth, high school and adult hockey at the outdoor rink. Kids and adults alike will enjoy a Rockefeller Centerlike experience during community skates.

Team Effort Campaign A new initiative in cooperation with the RMU football team and the multicultural student services department on campus was created in the spring of 2014, called the Team Effort Campaign. The campaign was created to enhance the programs that student-athletes are attending, to offer SET credit toward the Ambassador of Equality Award and create a space where young men can talk about difficult subjects. On average, the program has had an attendance of 23 student-athletes, including 14 minorities. The program will be fully implemented in the 2014-15 academic school year and will be called “Guy Talk.” Of the 23 current student-athletes that participate, seven are halfway through the campaign.
