Dear Member of the RMU Athletics family, As has become an annual custom, we are pleased to present the 2015-16 Department of Athletics Annual Report. In the pages that follow, you will find a very long list of impressive accomplishments by our excellent student-athletes and coaches, supported by our superb staff and University faculty. This marks the culmination of so much hard work by so many people, and we are proud of each and every accomplishment noted. Of particular significance is that our student-athletes have proven once again that success in athletic competition can be accomplished without sacrificing excellent achievement in the classroom and while maintaining a commitment to community service. Sending two teams to the NCAA Tournament in volleyball and women’s basketball, the third consecutive year a pair of programs have accomplished the feat, are examples of a University and Athletic Department that continue to thrive. Finally, while this report outlines all of the tangible results attained by our studentathletes, coaches, and staff, the long-term benefit to our student-athletes of their athletic experience can best be measured by their success in their careers and/or postgraduate studies. Combined with the outstanding education and student life opportunities that Robert Morris University affords, the 450+ student-athletes at RMU are all winners! Sincerely,

Craig S. Coleman, M.D. Director of Athletics

RMU Inks Deal With Under Armour

Robert Morris University announced May 2, 2016, a multiyear partnership with Under Armour, the global leader in performance footwear, apparel, and equipment, as the exclusive outfitter and supplier for the university’s 16 NCAA Division I athletics programs.   “Our partnership with Under Armour demonstrates the reputation for excellence the Colonials have earned in competition as well as in the classroom,” said RMU President Chris Howard. “Robert Morris is grateful to Under Armour and we proudly welcome them to the Colonial Nation.”   The partnership between RMU and Under Armour commences Sept. 1, 2016. Under the terms

of the agreement, the brand will provide uniforms, footwear, accessories, equipment, and other apparel to all the university’s Division I teams. Under Armour also will have the exclusive right to sell all authentic and replica RMU Athletics products.   “We endeavor to provide the best possible experience for our student athletes, and this partnership is proof of that. Our athletes and coaches are thrilled to be able to compete in Under Armour gear,” said Craig Coleman, M.D., RMU director of athletics and head softball coach.   More than 450 student athletes compete for RMU, and over the past 40 years,

the Colonials have claimed 43 regular-season championships and 44 league tournament titles. Since 1992, Robert Morris has placed 56 student-athletes on Capital One District II Academic All-America Teams. Included in that group are 23 studentathletes that were honored in consecutive years. Nine of those student-athletes went on to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. Since 1988, RMU student-athletes have been named the Northeast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sport 38 times.   Thirteen of RMU’s intercollegiate athletics programs have earned at least one conference championship.

In 2016, the women’s basketball team earned its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and the men’s basketball team has made eight appearances in the Big Dance, a Northeast Conference record. The softball team has eight regular-season conference championships, and football and volleyball have six each. The men’s and women’s ice hockey teams each have won a conference tournament championship, and the men’s team has an NCAA Tournament appearance under its belt. This year, the men’s ice hockey team earned a perfect Academic Progress Rate score from the NCAA.

In Memoriam

Midge McPhail

The Robert Morris University Department of Athletics mourned the loss of rowing head coach Midge McPhail, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, after a battle with lung disease caused by complications from Sjögren’s Syndrome. She was 50 years old.   “Midge McPhail was an unbelievable role model for the female student-athletes that she coached during her time at Robert Morris,” Craig Coleman, M.D., said. “Midge placed a high priority on teaching her student-athletes to be strong, independent women who would succeed in life. She had a tremendous impact on many

of our rowing alumni as well as our current student-athletes. It serves to remind us about what is truly important about what we do, and Midge certainly needed no such reminder.”   McPhail was in her 10th season as head coach of the RMU rowing team and during her tenure helped oversaw the program’s transition into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) as an associate member. Her programs not only competed annually for MAAC Championships but also finished as one of the top programs in the conference in the classroom.

Prior to Robert Morris, McPhail spent five seasons at Ohio State University as both the head women’s novice coach and an assistant varsity coach. In 2006, she helped an OSU squad that claimed both the Big Ten and Central Regional championships. As head novice coach, McPhail led the Buckeyes to both regional and Big Ten championships in 2002, while Ohio State also claimed Central Regional championships under her watch in 2002 and 2004.   McPhail is survived by her husband, Jimmie, daughter Jada and sons James, Sam and Jordan.
