In the pages that follow, you will find a very long list of impressive accomplishments by our excellent student-athletes and coaches, supported by our superb staff and University faculty. Colonials In The Community The Robert Morris Department of Athletics continues to be an active member of the community, both on a local and regional level. Some highlights of the 2016-17 academic year … • The Robert Morris Department of Athletics was present at the Moon Area High School Career Day on Oct. 28, 2016. A trade show that features various employers throughout the region, prospective students could learn what it is like having a career in athletics.

• The RMU Adopt a Highway litter cleanup project is in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Robert Morris has been part of the program since 1996, and every year, Robert Morris student-athletes on two occasions clean a two-mile stretch on I-376 in Moon Township.

• Members of the RMU rowing team participated in the JDRF One Walk September 24, 2016, in Pittsburgh, Pa., at Schenley Park. The event helps raise money to support life-changing breakthroughs that give hope to everyone impacted by type 1 diabetes (T1D).

• Student-athletes from the RMU men’s ice hockey squad volunteered at the 26th annual Sewickley Harvest Festival Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016. The festival, which is held at Broad and Thorn Streets in Sewickley, Pa., features over 125 vendors and live music.

• The RMU women’s lacrosse team hosted its 11th annual Colonial Classic Hope for the Cure Tournament Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016. The annual youth and high school 7 vs. 7 clinic and tournament helps raise money and awareness for Huntington’s Disease.

• For the second consecutive year in 2016-17, the Robert Morris women’s ice hockey team created the Big Sister/Little Sister program, which was founded by assistant coach Chelsea Walkland with the help of the Pitt Pens Elite youth program. At the start of the season, the Colonials hosted a pairing ceremony, during which each RMU student-athlete was assigned a “little sister” from the Pitt Pens Elite program for the course of the year. The Colonials attended the Pitt Pens Elite end of the year tournament in December, and the youth players got the opportunity to skate to the blue line with their “big sister” at each home game at 84 Lumber Arena. • For the past 10 years, members of the RMU men’s basketball team have taken part in afterschool activities at the Mooncrest Community Center in Moon Township, Pa. Student-athletes take part in activities like dodge ball, kickball and other activities to help kids become active while also assisting in tutoring with homework.

• The women’s basketball team hosted its sixth “Career and Education Day” in its 2016-17 season opener, a 69-52 victory over Point Park Nov. 11, 2017. More than 250 students from various elementary schools out of the Moon Area, Cornell and Quaker Valley school districts attended the game.

• On three occasions throughout the course of the 2016-17 season, student-athletes from the Robert Morris women’s ice hockey program visited patients at the West Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center in Moon Township.

• Women’s ice hockey hosted its 11th annual Skate for the Cure weekend at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday, Jan. 13, and Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, during a two-game set with Lindenwood. Founded by College Hockey America (CHA) during the 2006-07 season, Skate for the Cure is a league-wide initiative that involves member institutions dedicating one or two games toward raising funds and awareness a particular cause.

• As part of its Skate for the Cure weekend, RMU held a “Teddy Bear Toss” Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, that was spearheaded by seniors Maeve Garvey and Rikki Meilleur. Over $1,600 dollars and 425 teddy bears were donated to the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The game also set a new attendance single-game record with 874 fans attending the game.

• Student-athletes from the RMU women’s basketball team wore pink uniforms at every home game throughout the month of February for breast cancer awareness. • The Robert Morris rowing team spent Martin Luther King Day at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Pittsburgh, Pa., Jan. 16, 2017, taking part in different activities with residents and assisting in organizing the pantry, cleaning and taking down Christmas decorations. Student-athletes also helped with preschool and resident music class. • The Colonials celebrated National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on Jan. 21, 2017, at the RMU women’s basketball game against Bryant and Feb. 11, 2017, at the RMU women’s ice hockey tilt against RIT. A mini-sport clinic was held prior to the contests with student-athletes from volleyball, soccer, rowing, softball and track & field, and student-athletes from women’s basketball and women’s ice hockey provided autographs after their respective games.

• At the RMU men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader Saturday, Jan. 11, 2017, the Colonials held their second Hoops for Troops event, which is presented by Shale Land Services and benefits Legacies Alive, a non-profit organization located in Washington, Pa., that supports families of our nation’s fallen heroes. Legacies Alive is designed to bring awareness to the lives and character of all service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Throughout the course of the doubleheader, game jerseys were auctioned off to raise money.

• The Robert Morris University Department of Athletics teamed up with the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots initiative for the ninth consecutive year, collecting over 200 toys. RMU fans that donated a toy were given free admission to five different RMU home intercollegiate athletic events, including football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s ice hockey. • Throughout the course of the 2016-17 season, both the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams held various community programs. Included were four “Skate with the Colonials” nights, which were free to fans that brought their own skates.

• Student-athletes from the RMU men’s ice hockey program rotated on a weekly basis, volunteering their time with the Artic Foxes, a youth hockey program based out of the RMU Island Sports Center. • Robert Morris continued its popular youth soccer clinics, which are held each spring in Joe Walton Stadium and annually draws over 100 participants. In addition, a pair of youth basketball clinics were also held at the Charles L. Sewall Center, one in the fall in 2016 and another in the spring of 2017. Over 150 participants are at each clinic, and in 2016-17 canned food drives were held. Over 250 canned goods were donated to the West Hills Food Pantry from the basketball clinics.

UPMC EVEN

Coming Jan

Robert Morris University announced Jan. 10, 2017, the addition of the UPMC Events Center, a 140,000-square foot complex for the Colonials NCAA Division I basketball and volleyball teams, which will play in Peoples Court. The UPMC Events Center is the main part of a $50 million project that also includes a student recreation and fitness center on RMU’s Moon Township campus.   The project will be funded largely through individual donations and corporate sponsorships, including sponsorships from UPMC, Peoples, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group, PJ Dick, and PNC. The project also has received a grant through the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.

NTS CENTER

nuary 2019

In addition to the 4,000-plus-seat Peoples Court, a practice court, locker rooms, a strength and conditioning center, offices for athletics, concessions and a souvenir shop, the UPMC Events Center will feature 11,000 square feet of conference and meeting space for campus events and outside organizations. Plans call for the center to open in January 2019.   “With a new venue of this quality and size, RMU cements its status as a university on the rise,” said RMU President Chris Howard. “Not only is it a significant regional asset, it’s a facility worthy of the success for our athletics programs and reflective of our status as a nationally ranked university. This is a great day for the Colonial Nation.” Continued ➞

“UPMC is thrilled to be a leading partner with Robert Morris University in this exciting endeavor that will provide long-lasting health and wellness benefits to not only the RMU community but also to people and businesses in this entire region. We applaud and share RMU’s commitment to provide our communities with nothing less than world-class care and facilities,” said Jeffrey Romoff, president and CEO of UPMC.   As part of a broader strategic collaboration with RMU, UPMC will become the exclusive provider of sports medicine to the university’s 16 NCAA Division I sports programs, and the UPMC Health Plan will administer the university’s employees’ health insurance benefits. UPMC already provides health care to RMU students at UPMC MyHealth@School, an on-campus health and wellness center that opened in the fall.   The UPMC Events Center will bring the Airport Corridor an attractive new venue for public speakers, conventions, expos, concerts, graduation ceremonies and other family entertainment options. It also will host the university’s annual convocation and commencement ceremonies, which have outgrown their current location.   All three teams that will play at Peoples Court — men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball — have won the Northeast Conference title and advanced to the NCAA tournament in the last three years.

The McPhail Boathouse The Robert Morris University Department of Athletics debuted its latest facility Oct. 22, 2016, as the McPhail Boathouse received its grand opening at the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island.   The boathouse is named in honor of former head coach Midge McPhail, who passed away in September of 2015 after a battle with lung disease caused by complications of Sjögren’s Syndrome. She served as RMU’s head rowing coach from 2006 to 2015.   “Today is an exciting day for our program,” head coach Nelle Stahura said. “Not only do we honor Midge and all she did for this program with the opening of this boathouse, but we have a place to call home for our student-athletes. The future for RMU rowing is extremely bright.”   McPhail’s daughter, Jada, officially opened the boathouse by cutting the ribbon as part of the ceremony. She was also joined by her father,

Jimmie Burks, members of the McPhail family, RMU Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., RMU Senior Associate Athletic Director Marty Galosi, RMU Associate Athletic Director Don Smith, RMU rowing alumni and current studentathletes.

RMU worked with Neville Township, Pa., to develop an attractive building design that compliments the entrance to the township coming across the Coraopolis Bridge and provides an added feature to the RMU Island Sports Center. RBA Architects provided the design of the facility, HF Lenze served as the civil engineer responsible for site development and landscape design and Tedco built the complex.   The McPhail Boathouse provides improvements and enhancements for RMU rowing, produces a sustainable home for the program and its student-athletes as well as enhancing recruiting capabilities. Included in the boathouse is an improved access path and dock that allows student-athletes to effectively transport boats to the water and back. The access path runs through the Paradise Lanes property, with the Saunier family providing a model partner.

A Bright Future Rookies of the Year

In the Northeast Conference (NEC), Lilly Harnish (outdoor track & field), Max Palmer (golf), Annie Sachs (women’s lacrosse) and Ryan Smith (men’s lacrosse) took home the accolade. In addition, Jaycee Gebhard was selected as the College Hockey America (CHA) Rookie of the Year for women’s ice hockey. It marks the most rookie honors in a single season in school history.

NCAA Frozen Four To Return To Pittsburgh In 2021 Colonials will host event for the second time The NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee has chosen the city of Pittsburgh as the site of the 2021 NCAA Frozen Four, it was announced April 18, 2017.   Robert Morris University, in conjunction with VisitPittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL), will serve as the host of the event at PPG Paints Arena.   “It’s extremely exciting to be able to bring the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four back to Pittsburgh in 2021,” RMU Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., said. “Given the success we had with the event in 2013 and the positive response we got from the NCAA and the local and regional communities, our expectation is to put on another first-class event that everyone can be proud of. Our strong partnerships with both VisitPittsburgh and PPG Paints Arena continue to help make the city an attractive site to host the NCAA Frozen Four.”   The 2021 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four at PPG Paints Arena will take place April 8 and 10, 2021.   “We’re very excited to have the Frozen Four

return to Pittsburgh,” RMU head men’s ice hockey coach Derek Schooley said. “This is the premier event of college hockey and will bring fans from across the country to the city of Pittsburgh. Along with numerous exciting wins, hosting the Frozen Four is another feather in the cap of Robert Morris hockey.”

The 2021 NCAA Frozen Four will mark the second time RMU has hosted the event in Pittsburgh. The first occasion came in 2013, when Yale claimed its first national championship as the No. 4 seed out of the West with a 4-0 victory over Quinnipiac at CONSOL Energy Center April 13, 2013. Yale’s first national title in men’s ice

hockey marked the first time a major national championship in NCAA history was decided in Pittsburgh. A total of 35,612 fans attended the three games.   In addition to Yale and Quinnipiac, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four also featured St. Cloud State and UMass Lowell. Quinnipiac, the No. 1 seed in the East, defeated St. Cloud State, 4-1, April 11, to advance to the national championship game, while Yale defeated UMass Lowell, 3-2, in overtime.   Each of the four teams that made up the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four were seeking their first national championship, just the second time in tournament history and first since 1958. Andrew Miller of Yale was named the 2013 Most Outstanding Player as he helped guide the Bulldogs to the first national championship for a member of ECAC Hockey since 1989.   In addition, the NCAA Frozen Four features a number of activities surrounding the event, including Frozen Fest and autograph sessions.
