Head Coach Nate Handrahan

Entering into his first full season as head coach of the Colonials, Nate Handrahan is looking to build upon the success of the inaugural season and point the women’s ice hockey program in the right direction. An experienced veteran as a player and as a coach, Handrahan brings a great sense of leadership and serves as a mentor to this young squad. The Colonials concluded their 2005-06 season with a 5-24-2 mark, with a 2-10-1 record in the College Hockey America women’s conference. No stranger to Robert Morris, Handrahan has been involved in the Colonials hockey system since the start of Division I play in 2004. Serving as an assistant to head men’s coach Derek Schooley, Nate was involved in all of the aspects of the men’s hockey program. He helped guide the men’s team to a 8-21-4 record in their first season of play, and then to a 12-20-3 record in 2005-06. Prior to the Colonials, the 2000 graduate of Niagara University returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2001 under Dave Burkholder. Handrahan’s duties included off-ice training, scouting, game film review and coaching the team’s defensemen. Niagara earned an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament in 2004 8

after winning the College Hockey America Tournament, marking Handrahan’s second trip to the NCAA postseason. During his collegiate career, Handrahan played in every game for the Niagara Purple Eagles through four years, leading them to a No. 6 seed in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. The former defenseman who played under current UMass-Lowell head coach Blaise MacDonald was a two time All-ECAC West selection and holds the Niagara record for most consecutive games played (129). Handrahan earned the team’s PAW Award in 1997-98 and the Unsung Hero Award in the Purple Eagles playoff season of 1999-2000. He finished his career with 13 goals and 66 assists for 79 points. Following the 1999-2000 season, Handrahan was signed by the Roanoke Express of the East Coast Hockey League, where he played the remainder of the 2000 season and 2000-01 season. Handrahan and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Haylee and Mara. He and his family reside in Aliquippa, Pa.

Assistant Coaches

Scott Spencer Scott Spencer is in his first season as an assistant coach for Robert Morris in 2006-07. Spencer, who joins the Colonials after serving three years at Bemidji State, is no stranger to winning. Serving as an assistant coach primarily for the men’s

program and a strength and conditioning coach for the women’s side, he has accumulated an impressive record. From 2003 to 2006 he helped guide the men’s program to two regular season titles, two conference tournament championships and two appearances in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament for the Beavers. “I’m very excited to join Coach Handrahan and the rest of the Robert Morris staff,” said Spencer. “It’s always exciting when you start a new program, and I hope to use my past coaching experiences to help with the growth and development of this young program.” During his time with Bemidji State, Spencer had a hand in starting the Junior A squad North Iowa Outlaws of the National American Hockey League during the 200506 season. In his duties with the team, he acted as an assistant coach, working directly with the defense and goaltenders, as well as heading the recruiting, overseeing the strength and conditioning of the team and serving as an academic adviser.

Raffi Wolf Joining the Colonials coaching staff for the 2006-07 season, Wolf brings not only an impressive résumé but also experience playing against some of the toughest competition in the world. “Raffi’s experience playing at the Division I and world level’s will bring a new kind of attitude to the team that the girls can feed off of,” said Handrahan. “Her dedication to the sport and desire to succeed are a great addition to our young team.” Wolf has spent the past 13 years playing hockey for her homeland of Germany with the National Team. In that short amount of time Wolf has helped her team compete twice in the European Championships and five times between 2000

2006-07 Colonial Women’s Ice Hockey

“We are excited to add a coach of Scott’s ability and character. He is the right person for this program and will contribute to the growth of RMU women’s ice hockey. He has been around winning programs for many years and will bring that attitude to our culture.”

-Head Coach Nate Handrahan

Prior to his career in coaching, Spencer played four year of collegiate hockey with the ACHA Division I Minot State. In his four seasons of play, the team earned bids to the national tournament three times, was ranked in the Top 10 three times and finished third in the division in 2001-02. Spencer’s accolades include winning the Player’s Player Award in the 2000-01 season, being named captain for the 2001-02 season and receiving honorable mention honors in the ACHA Tournament in 2002.

and 2005 in the world championships. In 2002 and 2006 Wolf was a leader of the German National Team that competed in the Winter Olympic Games, taking sixth place in ’02 and fifth in ’06. During her career with the German team, Wolf earned a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology from the University of Maine in 2003. While at Maine, Wolf rewrote the record books as a defenseman for the Black Bears women’s ice hockey team. In four years she became the schools all-time leading scorer for goals and points in a career. She garnered the honors of First Team All-Ivy league, First Team All-ECAC and was named defensive MVP for the Bears. On the national level in 1999 Morey was selected to represent her native country Canada as a member of the U-22 National Team. A dual sport athlete at Brown, Morey also participated in field hockey as a defensive specialist. She was named to the First Team All-Ivy league and North Eastern All-American teams. Cara resides in Pittsburgh with her husband, Sean Morey of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and their two kids, Devan and Kate.

Blaine Buterbaugh

Buterbaugh was a defenseman for the Colonials club hockey team, which played in the ACHA Division I level. Upon graduating Buterbaugh didn’t look far for employment, finding a spot at the RMU Island Sports Center as the ice hockey coordinator. A native of North East, Pa., Buterbaugh resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Darcie, and their son Landon.

Administrative Assistant

Blaine Buterbaugh is in his first year as an assistant coach with the women’s ice hockey program at Robert Morris University. Buterbaugh, a Robert Morris University alumnus, graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. While attending RMU

Dave Brown Athletic Trainer

David Brown is in his first year with the Colonials training staff. As the assistant athletic trainer Brown is responsible for the health and well-being of the women’s ice hockey team as well as women’s lacrosse teams. He also assisted with the football team. Brown, a 2004 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford earned a Bachelor of Science in athletic training. 10

While pursuing his degree, Brown was a member of the Panther baseball team as an all-conference catcher. He was a three-year starter and two-year captain. After graduating, Brown attended Bowling Green State University, where he worked as the graduate assistant athletic trainer for men’s soccer and women’s track and field and helped with football. In 2006 he earned a Master of Education in sports administration. Brown, a native of Coudersport, Pa., resides in Coraopolis. Robert Morris University

2006-07 Outlook Entering only its second season of play, the Robert Morris University women’s ice hockey program is looking to take the next step to become one of the premier up-and-coming teams in 2006-07. “Our staff is very optimistic about our upcoming season,” said Nate Handrahan, who is entering his first full season as head coach. “We are going to continue to lay a foundation of success for future years to be built upon.” In their inaugural season, the Colonials accomplished many feats in their 5-24-2 record. Stemming from their first series, the team grew as a whole from picking up its first victory for the program, a 2-1 win against Vermont on the road, to attaining several weekly honors from College Hockey America, a national honor from USCHO. com for the outstanding play of their rookie goaltender, to landing two players on the all-conference squad. These milestones and the taste of victory leave Robert Morris only hungry for more in 2006-07.

Morgan Beikirch 12

By returning 14 players from the inaugural campaign and the addition of the 10 highly talented players, the Colonials will have a solid core to grow with and bring success to the program for years to come.

Forwards

(Eight returning, one lost)

Kathryn Traynor

“Our non-conference schedule is very challenging and the CHA is as good as it has ever been,” said Handrahan. This season will resemble more of a heavyweight fight than RMU’s inaugural schedule in 2005-06. Robert Morris will go toe-to-toe with some of the top teams in collegiate hockey in 2006-07, including non-conference foes St. Cloud State, Clarkson, Providence and the 2006 national champions, Wisconsin. After the first round, the Colonials will take on their three rivals of the CHA, including perennial powerhouse Mercyhurst, Wayne State and Niagara. After spending the previous season learning the ropes of Division I hockey, the Colonials will be armed with the best weapon the team could have to take on a grueling schedule: experience. The team will include 24 players: 15 sophomores, eight freshmen and one junior, giving Handrahan some much-needed depth at his disposal. The sophomores will provide a great sense of onthe-ice leadership to this group of freshman.

Robert Morris returns eight of its forwards from the previous season, including the team’s top two scorers in sophomores Morgan Beikirch and Kathryn Traynor. Kristen Miles, a returning captain will provide leadership to the team on and off the ice. Joining the Colonials scoring threat are five new players to add quality and quantity to the bench. Beikirch returns this season after leading the team in points in 2005-06. A creative player who shows dynamic abilities on the ice, she had a balanced stat sheet, scoring eight times and assisting in eight goals.

Nicole Zynda Robert Morris University

Picinic and Angela Kost. Dorman displayed great vision on the ice and the potential to be a break-out goal scorer after posting five points in 2005-06. Picinic is an athletic player who has great offensive skills and Kost is a tough player with a great work ethic. Jessica Riley, Jordan Riley and Chelsea Walkland join the Colonials as freshmen this season. The Riley sister’s and Walkland bring a strong work ethic and motivation to the ice after playing on the junior circuit. Transfer Megan Dovell brings experience of playing at the collegiate level to RMU while Maria Olausson adds a new level of offense to the young squad coming from the Danish National Team.

Defenseman (Five returning)

Laura White

Beikirch became the first RMU women’s ice hockey player to pick up CHA Rookie of the Week honors in the first weekend of competition against Maine. Complimenting her will be Traynor who proved to be a formidable foe on the ice. In her first season Traynor racked up three multi-point games, including two goals in a tie against Union College. She led the team with 10 goals, four of which came on the power-play, and finished with 15 points on the season. Miles is an intelligent player who has great finishing skills to provide the Colonials with an extra scoring threat. She appeared in 23 games in 2005-06, but she made every moment count, racking up three multi-point games, including a goal and an assist in the home-opening series against RPI, helping her earn CHA Rookie of the Week. She tallied eight goals and three assists with 11 points. Sophomore Ali Proodian is a face-off specialist who adds an extra offensive punch. As a freshman, she tallied eight points, including a two-point performance against Wayne State with a goal and an assist. Players to watch this season at forward are sophomores Alissa Dorman, Megan 2006-07 Colonial Women’s Ice Hockey

Like the forwards, the defense is returning its core from the inaugural season. All five players are back, and they are joined by three newcomers to give the Colonials some much-needed depth. Sophomore Samantha Ullrich will lead the defense again this year as a returning captain and a CHA All-Rookie Team pick. Alongside Ullrich are sophomores Laura White and Jenny Monteleone who bolster the Colonials defensive corps. Ullrich proved to be a key component on the Colonials transition game. Her playmaking ability was evident on the ice as the team’s leading defensive scorer, giving her nine points on the year. Right behind her in points was White who picked up four assists. Three of her assists came in two victories against Sacred Heart. Monteleone returns after playing in every game in 2005-06, a season in which she picked up two points and made herself a physical presence on the ice. Playing in all but one game, sophomore Nicole Zynda showed that she is an intelligent player, while Ashley Barnett played in 27 games and scored two points. Adding to defense this season, Handrahan brought in three new faces that will bring size and experience to the team. Freshmen Jacki Gibson, Mallory Giambra and Amanda Cianculli are three players with

Brianne McLaughlin

lots of energy and great stick skills. All three will have a shot at seeing time this season.

Goalies

(One returning) Sophomore Brianne McLaughlin is entering her second season as the key to the Colonials. In her freshman year, she posted a .902 save percentage while making 1,088 saves. McLaughlin had nine games in which she posted 40-plus saves including a game against Mercyhurst where she had a 57-save performance. McLaughlin picked up several awards and accomplishments, including two-time CHA Defensive Player of the Week, CHA Rookie of the Week, USCHO.com National Defensive Player of the Week, 2005-06 CHA All-Rookie Team and a 2005-06 CHA All-Conference Second Team pick. Freshman Heather Rossi comes in to add depth at the goalie position. Rossi is a driven competitor who should make a run at seeing some time between the pipes.

Hockey at Robert Morris University

Although 2004-05 was the start of NCAA Division I hockey at Robert Morris University, the Colonials are not new to success on the ice. RMU hockey teams have had a home on Neville Island since the mid-1990s playing on the club hockey level in the Western Pennsylvania College Hockey Association and the American College Hockey Association. These teams didn’t just compete — they won. The club team ruled College Hockey East from 1998 to 2000, with championships in 1998 and 2000 and second place finishes in 1999 and 2001. ACHA membership began for the Colonials in 2001. Again, it didn’t take long for RMU to find room at the top of the standings. The Colonials claimed the 2002 ACHA Division III National Championship, prompting the RMU administration to take a closer look

2006-07 Colonial Women’s Ice Hockey

at the success of the hockey program. On Oct. 1, 2003, late RMU Director of Athletics Susan Hofacre, Ph.D., announced that the University was going to add men’s ice hockey as a varsity sport to start in the 2004-05 school year. On the ice, the success continued for the Colonials with another appearance in the ACHA Division III National Tournament in 2003.

In the summer of 2003, RMU purchased the Island Sports Center on Neville Island from the Neville Land Company, a subsidiary of the Hillman Company. For the 2003-04 season, the popularity of hockey on campus prompted two on-campus club teams, one to play in the ACHA’s Division I level and one on the Division III level. With the sudden growth of popularity in hockey at RMU, Hofacre announced on March 31, 2004, that women’s ice hockey would be the newest addition to Robert Morris University and would take stage in the 2005-06 school year. With the addition of women’s ice hockey, RMU would become only the second school in Pennsylvania to offer a Division I men’s or women’s ice hockey program, second only to Mercyhurst College of Erie, Pa.

Hockey In Pittsburgh NCAA Division I hockey at Robert Morris University is the latest addition to a long tradition of hockey in Pittsburgh. Hockey in the Golden Triangle has a tradition of success, and the Colonials only hope to add to that tradition. Pittsburgh had the first amateur hockey team in the United States in 1897 and was a charter member of the International Professional Hockey League, the world’s first pro league, which began in 1904. The Pittsburgh club was one of five cities – Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; Calumet, Mich.; and Hougton, Mich. – to form the IPHL. The IPHL disbanded after the 1907 season and the city would not see another pro team until 1925, when the Pittsburgh Pirates joined the National Hockey League in 1925. The stock market crash in 1929 left the Pirates cash-strapped, and the team moved to Philadelphia

56

where it would fold just one year later. In between the professional teams of the IPHL and NHL, the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets and the Pittsburgh Hornets dominated the United States Amateur Hockey Association. The Yellow Jackets ruled the Western Division while the Hornets became the top team in the Eastern Division, and the teams met for the league championship in the 1924-25 season. After the Yellow Jackets defeated the Hornets in that 1925 championship tilt, the team entered the NHL and changed its name to the Pirates. Another Yellow Jackets team appeared in the city in 1931-32 as a member of the International-American Hockey League, but it folded after the 1932-33 season. After a one-year hiatus, the Shamrocks appeared for one season to be followed by another team with the name Hornets in 1936-37. The Hornets enjoyed a 20-year run in Pittsburgh, winning three Calder Cup

Trophies – the championship trophy of the American Hockey League – in the 1950s. The Hornets folded after the 1955-56 season only to reappear in 1961, winning a division title in 1964 and their fourth Calder Cup in 1967, before disappearing once again from the world of hockey. That was the first season of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL, a team that came into the national spotlight in 1984 when it drafted Mario Lemieux. The Penguins improved in the league, eventually winning back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1991 and 1992. The surge in popularity of the Penguins carried into the junior ranks with the formation of the Pittsburgh Hornets and Pittsburgh Forge. In addition, high school programs began to pop up all around the area in addition to club programs at local colleges and universities. RMU became the first school in the region to offer NCAA Division I hockey in 2004-05.

Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D. Gregory G. Dell’Omo, Ph.D., president of Robert Morris University, presides over one of Pennsylvania’s most innovative independent institutions of higher learning. He began his tenure as president on Aug. 1, 2005. “I have followed the success of Robert Morris University from afar, but now I look forward to leading this excellent university,” said Dell’Omo upon his appointment by the Board of Trustees. “Robert Morris has a strong foundation and rich heritage. Now, it is my job to lead in a way that builds upon this history. I am thrilled to have this opportunity.” “Dr. Dell’Omo is the right person to continue the growth and academic excellence Robert Morris University has experienced during the last 16 years,” said Joseph W. Nocito, chairman of RMU’s Board of Trustees. “He is a proven leader in academia. His background in fund raising, academics and university image building will be used to further strengthen Robert Morris University.” Dell’Omo came to RMU after 14 years at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, where he most recently served as vice president for external affairs from 2002 to 2005. In that capacity, he was responsible for government and community relations, university communications and the development of joint academic programs in China. Under his leadership, Saint Joseph’s was awarded $22 million in federal and state appropriations and contracts, and greatly expanded its affiliate programs

60

in China. Additionally, Dell’Omo was instrumental in directing Saint Joseph’s ongoing efforts to enhance its academic profile via a more integrated marketing communications program. Dell’Omo served as Saint Joseph’s associate vice president for academic affairs from 2000 to 2002, directing all academic research centers and institutes, international programs and sponsored research services. He was dean of the University’s Erivan K. Haub School of Business from 1996 to 2000, guiding the school and the accounting department to accreditation by AACSB, The International Association for Management Education, and overseeing the opening of a state-ofthe-art $30 million business school building. He joined Saint Joseph’s in 1991 as an assistant professor of management, moving up the

President faculty ranks to department chair of management and information systems (1993-94), associate professor of management (1994-2000) and professor of management (2000-05). Prior to joining SJU, he served on the faculty at Canisius College and the Cornell University Extension Program. Prior to beginning his career in academia, Dell’Omo spent six years working in human resources in the New York City retail industry and four years conducting research on employment issues such as labor law, collective bargaining, arbitration and discrimination. Dell’Omo earned a Ph.D. in industrial relations/human resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a master’s degree in industrial relations from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Montclair State University. He also holds a certificate from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. He has contributed to numerous academic journals and publications and lectured at many conferences throughout the world. Dell’Omo has remained an active consultant to universities throughout the nation, primarily on academic and management issues. Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly, have three children: Lara, an interior designer in San Francisco; Nicholas, a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh; and Vincent, a junior in high school.

Robert Morris University

Robert Morris University Academics The Robert Morris University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is not only about winning on the field or on the court. Academics is as much a triumph as the athletic competitions themselves. Robert Morris University is committed to the total development of its student-athletes. The 2005-06 academic year followed the trend set before, as 45 Colonials were named to the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, 22 to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll and 51 to the NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, Robert Morris placed the most student-athletes on ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Teams in 2005-06 than it has in school history, as a total of nine individuals covering six sports garnered

the honor. In 2005-06, Ray Gensler and Devin Wilson of the Colonial football team joined Lisa Jaska, Janette Schneider and Megan Bell (volleyball), Angela Story (women’s soccer), Jace Buzek (men’s ice hockey), Jill Dorsch (softball) and Jeff Witmyer (men’s track and field) in garnering District II accolades. Gensler went on to become the third Colonial in the last three years to earn Academic All-American honors, being named to

the 2005 second team for football. In all, 13 of the University’s 23 squads finished with team GPAs of 3.0 or higher in the fall 2005 semester, while 14 teams accomplished the feat in the spring of 2006. In addition, nearly 60 percent of all RMU’s 550 student-athletes posted a 3.0 or higher grade point average. The reason for RMU’s success in the classroom is simple. Colonial student-athletes receive the very best support when it comes to their academic curriculum. Evening study halls are monitored by the department’s student services personnel, and academic counseling is available from both the athletic department and the University’s enrollment management office. Graduation is the goal, and Robert Morris University strives to ensure its student-athletes attain it.

STARS

(Student-Athletes Reaching for Success) The Department of of Athletics at RMU, in coordination with the offices of Residence Life and Student Affairs and the Career Center, has established the STARS program. The goal of the program is to coordinate and provide University services and programs in order to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience at RMU. The STARS program includes: Academic Development

Services are in place to support student-athletes in their academic pursuit with the goal of having each student-athlete graduate. Tutoring is provided free to student-athletes, and the Athletic Department monitors academic progress throughout each term. Each studentathlete is assigned a faculty adviser and counselor, and advising is also available through the Athletic Department. High academic performance is recognized with a T-shirt award program and the end-of-the-year team and individual academic rewards. Early registration and missed classed policies help student-athletes coordinate the demands of athletics and academics.

Personal Development

Participating in intercollegiate athletics places many demands on student-athletes. At RMU, a variety of programs and services exist to make student-athletes more aware of, and capable of dealing with, issues such as time management, health and nutrition, stress management, fiscal responsibility and interpersonal relationships. The goal is to provide student-athletes with information that helps them make informed choices.

Career Development

One of the expected outcomes of a college education is the successful movement of a graduate into a career. Career guidance at RMU is provided through academic departments. At the Career Center, student-athletes can receive career counseling and participate in seminars related to job searches, resume writing and mock interviews. A job fair brings over 140 employers to the RMU campus each fall.

Service

Individuals live within a larger community. RMU studentathletes, coaches and administrators participate in activities that contribute to the community. Past activities have included reading to elementary school students, visiting retirement homes, participating in youth sports clinics and cleaning of highways.

Coleman, a native of Philadelphia who coached RMU’s softball team, began his new responsibilities May 1, 2005, and enters his second academic year in 2006-07. He replaced Susan K. Hofacre, Ph.D., who passed away in January 2005. For the past 15 years, Coleman has built a winning softball program with the Colonials. During that period, RMU has won three Northeast Conference regularseason championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a league record of 17-3 to claim the regularseason championship, then swept through the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and advance to its first NCAA Tournament. “As the longest-tenured coach at Robert Morris University, Craig has proven with his softball teams what it means to have a consistent and successful program both on the field and in the classroom,” said former Robert Morris University President Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. “His successful record will be an asset as he takes over as our new athletic director.” Likewise, Coleman believes the timing was perfect for him to lead the athletic program at Robert Morris University. “The time was right for me to make this professional change,” Coleman said at the time of his hiring. “I have always had a passion for athletics and for 15

64

years I held management positions in health care. As the athletic director, I can now merge these two positions into one that really excites me.” From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. From 1983 to 1989, he was the attending psychiatrist at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. Coleman earned his medical degree from the The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted a record of 19-45 in the previous three seasons. During his 16 years as head coach, the Colonials have

Director of Athletics posted an overall record of 390-346-4 (.530), including a record of 162-60-1 (.729) in conference play. He guided the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championships in his first four years, and in 1994, his team received the first national ranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Coleman’s success as head softball coach has come not only on the field, but also in the classroom. His players include nine District II Academic All-Americans, two NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes for softball (Stephani Ehrenfeld in 2000 and Nicole Aloi in 2001) and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. During the 1999-2000 academic year, RMU achieved the second highest cumulative team grade point average among all NCAA Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishing with a 3.409 grade point average, behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571). Prior to his appointment as head coach at Robert Morris, Coleman compiled a record of 359-158 (.694) in 16 seasons coaching summer softball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Patriots 18-and-under traveling fast-pitch team from 1986 to 1991. He guided the Patriots of the Amateur Softball Association to three national tournaments in his final four years at the helm.

Robert Morris University Athletics Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 23 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 24 league tournament titles among 23 sports, including eight regular-season titles in volleyball, five regular-season championships in football, five NEC Tournament titles in softball and three NEC Tournament championships in men’s soccer. In 2005, the Colonial men’s soccer team added to its illustrious history by downing No. 1 seed Monmouth, 3-2 in overtime, to claim its third NEC Tournament title and first since 1994. Forward Jacek Przednowek recorded a hat trick, including the golden goal with 1:25 to play in the first overtime, en route to tournament MVP honors. The Robert Morris softball squad, under the guidance of director of athletics Craig Coleman, also captured its fourth regular-season championship, tying Long Island for the top spot with a 17-3 league record. The 2005-06 athletics campaign followed a 2004-05 season in which the women’s volleyball team claimed its sixth straight NEC regular-season championship but fell short in making its sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Over the course of the last seven years, the Colonial women’s volleyball team has posted an overall record of 15984, including a school record 30 victories in 2001. Even more astounding is RMU’s record against NEC foes during that same span. The Colonials have won exactly 95 percent of their matches against league opponents in the last seven years with a 57-3 mark. Also during the 2004-05 athletics campaign, the Colonial softball squad captured its third NEC regular-season title with a 17-3 league record, then swept through the NEC Tournament for its fifth tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in school history. The success RMU athletics has had in recent years followed the seasons before it, as the Colonial RMU’S REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS SINCE 1990 Men’s Basketball – 1991, 1992 Football – 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 Men’s Soccer – 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2001 Softball – 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006 Women’s Volleyball – 1992, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004

football team finished its 2000 season a perfect 10-0, the first perfect campaign for any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA Mid-Major National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and moved into its own oncampus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s crew team, under the guidance of head coach Liz Jones, claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peaking at No. 16, the 1996 football squad finishing second in the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football team placing third and the 1999 football team placing first. Robert Morris has sent 14 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball and volleyball have made an NEC record five appearances, with men’s basketball qualifying in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990 and 1992 and volleyball in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. Following Ali and Jamie Dodds in 2005 was Joe Di Buono (2005), who was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL coach in Dan Radakovich, who spent 18 years as an NFL assistant and is currently RMU’s assistant head coach. Joining the football coaching staff in the summer of 2003 was John Banaszak, who became the third member of the staff with a background in the NFL. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

Joe Walton Stadium

Built over the course of 13 months, Joe Walton Stadium is the latest addition to the Robert Morris University Moon Township campus. The Colonials played their inaugural season at Joe Walton Stadium in 2005 and defeated Butler, 49-13, Saturday, Sept. 17, in the inaugural game. Built at a cost of $10 million by Mosites Construction Company with a capacity of 3,000, Joe Walton Stadium features a 36,000-square-foot athletic administration building that holds office space for the football coaching staff, athletic administration and Olympic sport coaches. Also included in the building is a state-of-the-art weight room, equipment room, two locker rooms, three classrooms, lobby, press box and University box. A special feature with the offices located in Joe Walton Stadium is the use of Landro Play Analyzer, a presentation device used 68

to study game videos. Up to 50,000 plays or 115 games can be instantly accessed without ever having to use video tapes or DVDs. Designed especially for coaches, it allows them to instantly jump to plays

without having to use video tape. The Joe Walton Stadium field covers 97,000 square feet, with the surface field turf. The turf consists of sand, rubber and film polyethylene grass-like fabric with secondary backing of high polyurethane. The field is lined for both football and soccer and also hosts field hockey and lacrosse games. The scoreboard for the stadium was provided by Institutional Specialties, a distributor of Daktronics, located in Pittsburgh, Pa. The music and public address system was provided by Hollowood Music and Sound in McKees Rocks, Pa., and Joe Walton Stadium also includes a portal and plaza. The portal includes 160 pavers to recognize donors to the campaign to raise funds for Joe Walton Stadium, while the plaza includes four kiosks, one each for tickets, concessions, the Barnes & Noble bookstore and alumni and special events. The Charles L. Sewall Center for Leadership The Charles L. Sewall Center for Leadership, dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris University as president from 1967 until 1989, is located on the Moon Township campus. With a capacity of 3,056, the Sewall Center is home to Colonial volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and indoor track and field programs and also houses office space for men’s and women’s soccer. The Sewall Center is also a regional and national conference center for the training and development of business executives, serving as a focal point for providing educational services to adult learners. It also furnishes the community with a conveniently located center for seminars. The facility also houses a 200-meter track, a full-service training room, four locker rooms, office space, an equipment room and a media room. After the Colonial basketball seasons end, the Sewall Center serves as

home to Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) high school basketball playoff games as well as the annual summer Five-Star Basketball Camp. Excitement at the Sewall Center came to a head in the springs of 1989, 1990 and 1992 when the Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament was held there, and the Colonials won the title each time. The facility also housed the same event in 1986. The dedication of the Sewall Center was the culmination of a $6 million campaign launched by the University in June of

1984. Seventeen months later, the inaugural game drew 2,880 fans as the Colonials fell to Duquesne University, 80-65. Nov. 30, 1985. Nevertheless, the enthusiastic response by the community facilitated the successful completion of the campaign. The idea for a multi-purpose facility was conceived in a series of meetings between the University and community leaders. Business and industry representatives indicated the critical need for a center for executive training and development. At the same time, Moon Township business and civic leaders spoke of their need for a conveniently located center for community events. The partnership continues through the Charles L. Sewall Center Advisory Committee, comprised of community leaders, and confirms the University's fruitful relationship with the community it serves.

North Athletic Complex Built at a cost of $2.5 million and opened in the fall of 1998, the North Athletic Complex on RMU’s Moon Township campus serves as the home of the Robert Morris men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and softball teams. The North Athletic Complex was built after clearing a 24-acre parcel of land that was nothing more than a heavily wooded hilltop. it now consists of two natural grass soccer fields (one for games and the other for practices), nine tennis / basketball courts that are fenced and lighted, a softball field and a pavilion that features a covered area for

2006-07 Colonial Women’s Ice Hockey

picnics, restrooms and storage areas. As well as hosting various Division I athletic events, the North Athletic Complex is used for intramurals and group functions. Five-Star Basketball Camp, which has hosted its annual summer camp at Robert Morris University for 28 years, uses the North Athletic Complex each summer to showcase some of the nation’s top high school talent to college coaches. The North Athletic Complex hosted its first Northeast Conference Championship in the fall of 2003, when Central Connecticut State

claimed the women’s soccer title. In the spring of 2005, Robert Morris hosted the NEC championship for softball, and the host Colonials went on to claim their sixth league title thanks to a 6-4 victory over Wagner.
