- These are heady times for the Nittany Lions, who are nationally ranked for the first time in their three seasons of Division I hockey. Penn State is also in first place in the Big 10 - Penn State won’t be out of its element in a high-scoring game, as the Lions have buried the seventh-most goals in D-I at 3.47 per contest. They also launch the most shots on goal at 39.6 per game (RMU is second at 37.6) - A special-teams game may lead to big offense, with PSU’s power play ranked fifth in D-I (26.7%) and RMU’s at No. 9 (22.4%) - A pair of upperclassmen pace Penn State in scoring, as senior Taylor Holstrom (4g, 14a) and junior Casey Bailey (8g, 10a) have 18 points apiece. Sophomore David Goodwin (6g, 8a) is the Lions’ only other double-digit scorer - Senior defenseman Patrick Koudys (Washington, 2011) is one of four NHL draft picks on the Penn State roster. The Ontario native, who is the only Lions blueliner to have played all 15 games, leads the team in blocked shots with 28 and has a plus-5 rating - Junior goalie Matt Skoff - from nearby McKees Rocks - continues to hold the top spot in the Penn State crease. He has a .919 save percentage and has presided over six of the Lions’ nine victories, plus both ties - This is Guy Gadowski’s fourth year coaching Penn State. He previously led D-I programs at Princeton (7 seasons) and Alaska (5)

WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

The calendar year 2014 has seen the Colonials rise from the bottom of the Atlantic Hockey Conference to a league title and NCAA Tournament appearance, followed by a historic start to the 2014-15 season. Since beating Sacred Heart 2-1 on Jan. 3, RMU is 28-8-6 for a .738 points percentage. The Colonials have also been the highest-scoring program in the nation over that span, netting 167 goals in 42 games for a potent 3.98 goals-per-game average.

BOR ROWIN G T HE PE NGU IN S’ ICE

Since 2007, RMU has been a willing and welcoming host to some of the NCAA’s premier programs, whether it be at Mellon Arena or CONSOL Energy Center. The Colonials are 4-6-1 on the Penguins’ home ice, including a pair of wins over nationally-ranked Miami. The latter of those two came in the first Three Rivers Classic championship game Dec. 29, 2012. RMU has also defeated Penn State and Air Force on the Pens’ sheet, in addition to a tie against Ohio State.

TOP T RIO STAYS HO T

The Colonials’ No. 1 forward line of Cody Wydo, Scott Jacklin and Zac Lynch were spectacular in the second half of 2013-14, and they’ve continued that collaborative magic so far this season. The trio has combined for 24 goals and 55 points through the fall semester, good for 36 percent of RMU’s goal output and 31 percent of the team’s total points.

CODY KE E PS CLIMBING

After a program-record 31-goal, 54-point junior year, Cody Wydo has paced RMU’s attack once again. The Michigan native, who entered his senior season as the active Division I leader in goals with 65, has 25 points (11g, 14a) in his first 16 games, the third-highest total in the nation. His 132 points have him just six shy of Nathan Longpre’s program record for career offense.

A NOT HE R S CO RIN G LINE

The 2014-15 Colonials boast impressive scoring depth, exemplified by the success of could be considered the third line - David Friedmann, Brady Ferguson and Daniel Leavens. Since being united on Nov. 1 against RIT, the trio has combined for 35 points (14g, 21a) in nine games. They were especially prolific from Nov. 21 to Dec. 13, accumulating 11 goals and 16 assists during RMU’s five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1). Friedmann was named Offensive Player of the Week twice over that span.

T H E R ACE IS O N

Zac Lynch and Cody Wydo continue to duel for the program’s all-time lead in shorthanded goals. Lynch took the solo lead in that category by netting the fifth 4-on-5 goal of his Colonials career on Nov. 22 at American International. However, Wydo caught up with a shorthanded tally in the third period of RMU’s overtime win over Sacred Heart on Dec. 5.

W H AT A START

By winning their first five games of the 2014-15 season, the Colonials not only established the best start in program history, they also matched their longest win streak in 11 years of Division I hockey. In addition, RMU nine-game unbeaten streak to start (7-0-2) matched its longest ever.

NEW H EIGH T S IN T HE PO LLS

The Colonials broke into the USCHO.com top 20 on Nov. 3, taking the No. 18 ranking. It was the first time RMU had a number next to its name since 2012-13. RMU bumped up to No. 17 after their off week, which matches an all-time high for the program in any national survey. As of Dec. 15, the Colonials have been ranked in six of the past seven USCHO polls.

COM I NG T HRO U GH L AT E

Robert Morris scored 57 goals in the third period or overtime last season, the third-highest total in the NCAA. The Colonials have continued that trend through the first 16 games of 2014-15, outscoring opponents 25-15 in the final regulation frame or later.

AVOI DIN G T HE GO O S E E GG

Robert Morris was not shut out in 2013-14 and, prior to the final game of the fall semester, the Colonials had gone 73 games since last getting blanked. That streak, which dated back to Jan. 25, 2013, ended with a 3-0 loss to Mercyhurst on Dec. 14 - although the Colonials fired 41 shots on goal.

W I NNI NG T HE PO S S E S S IO N BAT T LE

Thus far this season, RMU has launched 51 percent of the shot attempts in its games, a measurement known as Corsi. The Colonials fare even better in Fenwick, which factors out blocked shots, at 53 percent. In terms of shots on goal, RMU has owned 55 percent of those.

The Colonials accumulated three first-place votes as well, helping them to their highest preseason ranking in five Atlantic Hockey campaigns.

HEAD COACH DEREK SCHOOLEY

SCHOOLEY FILE

Head coach Derek Schooley has his Colonials primed to take the next step after a major breakthrough in 2013-14. Now in his 11th year in charge of RMU men’s hockey, Schooley enters the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 143-175-45. Last season, he led the Colonials to their first conference title and inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance. Following the banner year, Schooley signed a four-year contract extension that will keep him in Moon Township through the 2019-20 season. “I feel very fortunate to have started something very special from the ground up,” Schooley said. “Making the NCAA Tournament was very exciting for not only me personally, but for everyone who has been involved in the first decade of RMU hockey.” Schooley has been a college hockey coach for 17 seasons, starting with stints as an assistant at Cornell University and the Air Force Academy. In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first head varsity hockey coach in Robert Morris history. Since taking over the program, Schooley has coached 45 players who have signed pro contracts, five players that have taken part in NHL training camps and numerous others that have participated in NHL developmental camps. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley is married to the former Alicia Batson from Middleville, Mich. They are the proud parents of Kaitlyn, Brendan and Taylor. Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent five years at the Air Force Academy. He was an assistant coach for four years before spending one season as an associate head coach with Air Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season. Schooley started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he an assistant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup. Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. He tallied 23 assists and 27 total points as a senior, when he led Western Michigan with a plus-minus rating of plus-22 and won the team’s Grinder of the Year award.
