SCO UTING NIAG ARA

- The Purple Eagles had a difficult opening weekend at home, falling to Clarkson 3-1 on Friday before dropping a surprising 10-2 decision to St. Lawrence on Saturday - Niagara went 15-20-5 last season, including an 11-11-5 mark in Atlantic Hockey. Much like RMU, the Purple Eagles played their best hockey late, beating American International and Air Force in the AHA playoffs to make the league’s final four - Niagara returns its top two scorers from last season in junior Hugo Turcotte (13g, 16a in 2013-14) and senior Isaac Kohls (12g, 12a). Sophomore defenseman Vince Muto will look to follow up a 19-point freshman effort - Despite that veteran firepower, youngsters handled Niagara’s scoring on opening weekend, with freshmen Robert Angiolella and Derian Plouffe netting their first NCAA goals - Although sophomore goalie Jackson Teichroeb handled the majority of the action last year, fellow second-year netminder Adrian Ignagni earned the first two starts - Niagara is coached by Dave Burkholder, now in his 14th season in western New York. The RIT graduate has a 229-196-55 record in his current role

WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS? Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.

RMU’s sophomore class, comprised of nine skaters, produced 72 goals and 123 assists in 2013-14. The 195 points and 123 assists were the highest totals in the NCAA last season, while the group’s 72 goals were second in the country. Zac Lynch led the group in each of the three scoring categories with 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points.

RMU served as the host institution for the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, which was held at CONSOL Energy Center. Yale defeated UMass Lowell in the semifinals and Quinnipiac in the championship game to claim its first men’s hockey national title. St. Cloud State also participated.

SEEKIN G A BREAKTHRO UG H Three non-freshmen are in search of their first career goals: senior forward David Rigatti, sophomore defensemen John Rey and sophomore blueliner Rob Mann. Rigatti (81 games) has gone the longest without an NCAA red light, while Rey (39 games) and Mann (11 games) didn’t record a goal in their first years.

JAC KLIN LO VES A G O O D SET- UP Scott Jacklin is one of just 16 Colonials in the history of the program to record three or more assists in a single game. Jacklin accomplished this feat twice last year - Oct. 19 vs. Niagara and Feb. 1 vs. Army - to give him three such games in his career. Jacklin is the 10th Colonial to have multiple games with three or more assists.

Y IN Z PLAYIN’ HO CKEY N’AT? As has often been the case in the history of the program, mutliple Colonials hail from the greater Pittsburgh area. Zac Lynch (Shaler) and David Rigatti (Peters Township) will carry the black and gold flag on this year’s team.

BAT T LE F O R THE BO RDER RMU’s 26-man roster is split down the middle when it comes to country of origin: 13 Americans and 13 Canadians. Ten Colonials hail from Ontario, by far the most among any state/province. Among the guys from the USA, Michigan is the most popular home state, with four natives on the team.

EM PIR E STATE O F MIND Of the three goaltenders on the Robert Morris roster, a pair of them are from New York. Sophomore Dalton Izyk and junior Terry Shafer are both Empire State natives and will battle each other for playing time between the pipes for RMU this season.

HEAD COACH DEREK SCHOOLEY

SCHOOLEY FILE

Head coach Derek Schooley has his Colonials primed to take the next step after a major breakthrough in 2013-14. Now in his 11th year in charge of RMU men’s hockey, Schooley enters the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 143-175-45. Last season, he led the Colonials to their first conference title and inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance. Following the banner year, Schooley signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Moon Township through the 2019-20 season. “I feel very fortunate to have started something very special from the ground up,” Schooley said. “Making the NCAA Tournament was very exciting for not only me personally, but for everyone who has been involved in the first decade of RMU hockey.” Schooley has been a college hockey coach for 17 seasons, starting with stints as an assistant at Cornell University and the Air Force Academy. In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first head varsity hockey coach in Robert Morris history. Since taking over the program, Schooley has coached 45 players who have signed pro contracts, five players that have taken part in NHL training camps and numerous others that have participated in NHL developmental camps. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley is married to the former Alicia Batson from Middleville, Mich. They are the proud parents of Kaitlyn, Brendan and Taylor. Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley spent five years at the Air Force Academy. He was an assistant coach for four years before spending one season as an associate head coach with Air Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during the 1997-98 season. Schooley started his coaching career with the Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director of scouting. Schooley has been a head coach at the USA Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002, Schooley gained international coaching experience as he an assistant coach of the United States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in the Junior World Cup. Following his graduation from Western Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) during the 1994-95 season. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley spent part of the season with the Blizzard before joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL) regular season and playoff championship. A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, Schooley was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos.
